Cheney’s baby shows how politics is personal

Vice President Dick Cheney and his wife, Lynne, proudly posed Wednesday with their new grandson, Samuel David Cheney. Their lesbian daughter, Mary Cheney, gave birth to the baby and will raise him with her longtime partner, Heather Poe.
To his credit, Cheney has always been consistent in his support for gay relationships, saying during the 2004 campaign that "freedom means freedom for everyone." But the baby is a potent reminder of the extent to which politics is personal.
When those involved are family, you tend to want the best for them, and a chance for dignity and a full life, whether they’re straight or gay.

I saw that picture yesterday, and my immediate thought was this:

    WHERE ARE THE MOMS????

Why did Dick Cheney find it necessary to pose for a picture with his grandson that *EXCLUDES* that child’s parents?

    What is he ashamed of?

Apparantly that’s not true for values boy and his new child. I remember some discussion about how he would react if his child were gay.

Or perhaps you could ask the gay teens who are disowned by their parents and forced out of the home?

I’m glad the cheneys actually walk their talk about family values. Too bad so many others dont.

I have quite a few pictures of me or my wife or both of us with our grandkids. Few WITH the grandkids AND thier parents. It has nothing to do with shame. I am not ashamed of my kids or their spouses. It’s the Grandkid that is the focus. I understand your point, but I think it could vey well be no more than what I have described

I guess that depends on your definition of “probably rarely happens”.

“Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender youth: An epidemic of homelessness” from the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force in collaboration with the National Coalition for the Homeless.

Of the estimated 1.6 million homeless American youth, up to 42 percent identify as lesbian or gay, and a disproportionate number identify as bisexual or transgender.

Why do LGBT youth become homeless? In one study, 26 percent of gay teens who came out to their parents/guardians were told they must leave home.

LGBT youth also leave home due to physical, sexual and emotional abuse. LGBT youth report they are threatened, belittled and abused at shelters by staff as well as other residents.

Why must you comment on subjects that you know nothing about GS? Is your sole purpose in life to stalk Farmie and question anything that she says? You cannot possibly know what gay youths go through. But you feel compelled to comment on their struggles. And I for one do not doubt that they get kicked out of theri homes after coming out to their parents. If half of republicans are as small minded as those that post here I guarantee it is happening. So do us all a favor and hold your comments to subjects that you are familiar with.

    Get a life.

Damn straight Dick Cheney is happy. That baby can provide blood and organs to keep that a-hole alive for a few more years. Mary Cheney helped Dick dodge the draft and now her kid will help him out again.

  18. Posted May 24, 2007 at 1:09 pm | Permalink

I wouldn’t have given that picture a second thought if it weren’t for the fact that this isn’t the first time Mary Cheney and/or her partner has been excluded from “family photos” intended for public release.

In 2000, at the Republican National Convention, Mary appeared onstage with her parents, her sister, and her sister’s husband and children. Heather Poe, Mary’s partner, was not permitted to join them.

In 2004, Mary and Heather were both missing from the “family moment” on stage.

There are other examples like this – these are not isolated examples. This is just the latest.

But NONE exist for dick and lynn and Mary and Heather in the same frame.

Mary was like the liason to the LGBT community for Coors. Hardly a low profile job for someone who needs protection.

And Heather attends political events. She can be photographed in the seats, just cant be photographed with the in-laws.

At best providing data to the likes of some folks here is not a good idea. They can get more vicious if that have that hurting in their head that is associated with thinking. To create such pain for those folks is cruel and unusual punishment — I would contend.

My gay nephew and his partner raised his son who turned out to be a very well adjusted, kind, and educated young man..he’s an engineer and now has a beautiful family of his own and my nephew and his partner are the best grandpas any kid can hope for. What it takes to be a good parent is providing a loving, accepting, and secure home and environment, plus the right amount of discipline and guidence.Being a good parent has nothing to do with one’s sexual preference.

Leave, ’tis best to follow such a post with a (wink!!!) or sarcasm/ notation, lest you be taken seriously.

Even though your sarcastic post was way over the top, it is not that inconsistent with some of the stuff from our more right wing posters.

Gee Republican, aren’t you the one who won’t go fight the war you support? I think that coward AND hypocrisy are your names.

    hi happy the fister…

Well, you know I’d go in a heartbeat to get active duty pay, about 5900/month for me.

However,I don’t think I’d pass the physical as a disabled vet as old as I am.

But do keep trying happy, maybe you will come up with something worth printing.

If anyone is interested in peer-reviewed studies of gay parents and their children, send me an email. I have the PDFs stored on my computer. As said previously, with all other factors being equal, children of gay parents are just as happy/successful/well-adjusted than children of hetero ones.

Of course, the people who think otherwise don’t give two poops about science, I’m sure :(

    Republican,

The posts on this thread strongly suggest you need to get a life. I am sorry that you are in pain and that you are on the government dole. It is time for you to get a life. Your contribution here is absolutely nothing. You convince anyone who knows anything what a pathetic jerk you are. I do not excuse my like-minded liberals for pointing that out. But, face it man… you are toast here and have been here for too long a time.

I’m sorry your life is so sad. The rest of us are tired of hearing it, okay?

    Good night.

Okay Steven Davis, continue to walk on in Lock-Step with your Lib friends. Here, I’ll do cadence for you…

I know what it is Cosmos, but I have noticed more and more Liberals are walking in lockstep on about any subject.

Perhaps a better analogy would have been Soviet Union Lockstep, the Libs are more Socialistic.

    Republican,

Just because almost everyone on this blog thinks you’re a moron doesn’t mean we’re “Liberals walking in lockstep.” Hell, we all believe the earth isn’t flat, too. Some things are just obvious.

  102. Posted May 25, 2007 at 12:19 am | Permalink

The only reason you label me Tom is because I use the identical tactics that you Libs use and you can’t take your own medicine.

Stop with the personal attacks and I will as well. One slip up and its back to square one.

Is that a threat, big boy? Is this like the threat you imagine you made to the guy you imagine hit on you to cut off his genitals while he was sleeping?

You don’t like being called a moron? Here’s how to stop it: Quit using “Liberal” like it’s a vulgarity. Stop comparing those you disagree with to Soviet communists. Cease your repeated characterizations of other people’s thoughts and motives. End your practice of doing nothing but twisting the words of those you style as your opponents.

You may not have noticed, but there are other conservatives on this blog who treat those they disagree with, with respect. They get treated respectfully in return. Speaking for myself, I always try to give you the benefit of the doubt and treat you respectfully. But sometimes, Republican, you go so far beyond the bounds of decency there’s no respect for you possible.

    I think that’s sad.

Tara,Actually, in my experience, there is a difference in children raised by gay couples that some of those on thei blog may find intolerable.I’ve known quite a few gay couples and single gay parents, and their children. The one difference between them and children raised in “normal” households is that the children of gays are far less prejudiced toward gay people and people in general.

Good point, Jed. Just like children of mixed race couples. One more reason why it’s good for everyone to be more exposed to diversity, it encourages harmoney and discourages intolerance.

Mary,And that’s exactly why our RR friends here are against gay families (as well as mixed-race families), it promotes exactly the hands-on tolerance that keeps them from dividing people into good and evil categories, and that’s the only two pigeon-holes they’ve got!
