Bush sets bad example on seat belts

President Bush failure to buckle up while driving a pickup on his Texas ranch last weekend made a nice talking point for those covering law enforcement’s pre-Memorial Day seat belt campaign, known as “Click It or Ticket.” And the Texas Department of Public Safety’s focus this year happens to be on pickups, which are twice as likely as passenger cars to roll in fatal crashes. Bush’s bad example aside, assured White House spokesman Tony Snow on Tuesday, “We encourage everybody to wear their seat belts.”

    Sigh…

It is things like this which make me sympathize with the libertarians.

    Guess what?

I don’t wear my seatbelt when I am driving up to feed my horses or while driving around feeding the goats and horses or while I haul hay.

I do wear it almost all the time though. I refuse to ride in a vehicle if I can’t wear one either.

I have seen too many pictures of people who did not wear a seatbelt.

But while I am driving around under 20mph with no other traffic at all doing chores? Nope.

Rhonda,I like to kick Bush around as much as anyone, but this might be a little much.

Does anybody wear a seatbelt when they’re tooling around on the farm working?

Much as I dislike W, this is just trite crap. On a farm, 12 year olds can drive 2-ton trucks using modified puddle jumpers to push the pedals. Seen it happen. Realistically, I think that ranch work is going to be exempt from highway regulations. Why can’t we focus on the 90 million other things that are objectionable about Bush’s POLICY, and quit deriding him PERSONALLY?

On private property you can do pretty much as you please. Seatbelt laws don’t apply there as I recall.

Tempest in a teapot. There are things that are legal to do on your own property that are illegal in public..such as drinking, being nude, DRIVING WITHOUT A SEAT BELT, etc.

    This is totally ridiculous attack.

I agree with the rest of the libs on here. Love to bash upon Bush for the really bad things he does…but this isn’t one of them.

“I’ll wear my seatbelt, but watch me stick my hand in this auger that I took the safety off of”

If Bush dies in a rollover accident because he’s been ejected from and crushed by his pickup, we get Cheney for President.

MR PRESIDENT, FOR THE LOVE OF JESUS, PLEASE WEAR YOUR SAFETY BELT!

    Thanks.

Sure it looks bad, but if the president was on his own property, he’s not required to wear a belt anymore than I am in my own driveway. Many larger issues in life than this one.

The article about the Bush seat belt made a good point.

Although there is no confirmation, the Secret Service probably advises the President not to wear a seat belt just in case they would need to remove him from the truck if an security incident happened.

I’m not sure if Texas is one of these states, but farm vehicles aren’t even covered under State Traffic laws.

If you want to drive nude, wearing no seatbelt, drinking beer and do doughnuts on the south 40, it is permissible to do so. There isn’t even a requirement to have a drivers license or tag.

Even though I am not a Bush lover, and definitely not a lover of seat belt laws AT ALL… I must say even GWB is allowed to drive on HIS own property without using a seat belt, and if any media, liberal or otherwise, wants to make a mockery of it, then they arent doing their business of tracking REAL newsworthy items…

The point here is that GWB is setting a bad example and we all know how moral and upstanding GWB is in all his dealings. I just cannot imagine why anybody would care what a Texan does in hiw own pickup. I’m surprised GWB can reach the pedals.

    Posted May 26, 2007 at 11:51 am | Permalink

“Bad example”..of what? Consider, I saw a Democrat with a drink in his hand in a bar. Is that setting a ‘bad example’? Had he been drinking while driving down a public road, that would be a bad example. But, in context, the act that is illegal in one setting is NOT ILLEGAL in another, and therefore, no bad example.

Of course, to follow Capn’s lack of logic, I could then assume that “laws don’t apply to Democrats”.

This is a non-issue. If nothing else, it proves how ridiculous the GW haters will get to attack.

the whole thing is silly but it does remind me of an incident at MIT long ago. They had video taped a lab to show some sort of alumni function. As we revied the tape we noticed that nobody was wearing safety glasses! It was rather amusing as we had to re-do the whole thing.

It is not about him braking the law or not on his own property — it’s about the leadership example he sets, especially during a campaign to click it — the article says as much ….

… but than again we were wrong to ever expected leadership from him ……………

Re the Texas “Click It or Ticket” campaign — their hi-way signs say the ticket can be up to $200.

Also, Corzine’s SUV had slowed from 91 mph down to only 30 mph when it hit the guard rail.

Think carefully about his injuries, if you believe you don’t need to “click it” while going around 20 mph.

Down here in Georgia you do not have to wear a belt if you drive a pickup or a SUV. The law only applies to cars although that might change soon because of court challenges and the argument of racial disparity (whites tend to favour trucks and SUVs and blacks cars).

No Wichitan worth salt would do business with Safelite after the way they dumped their Wichita plant workers with no advance notification. Sorry but I prefer to do business with folks that have at least some degreee of decency. Figures that Bush would call them however. Republicans like business without morals.
