Remove flag before burning it

Burning a flag is a constitutional right. But it can be a crime when the flag is mounted to a house, as three dumb Yale University students found out. The students were charged with arson, reckless endangerment and various other crimes when police on patrol passed the house after the students had lit the flag on fire. The students weren’t even trying to make a political statement. “It was a foolish college prank,” their attorney said.

Well I just went and looked, and it apparently didn’t pass. You’d think I’d have remembered that.

    Weird.

BTW – she spoke SOOOO highly of the way you handled yourself. True CLASS she said – you had the other gals running for cover.

I wanted SO badly to see that little fiasco hit the newspaper. I wanted them to see what was happening.

    You did good, kiddo.

I cetainly support the right to burn a flag. Freedom requires no less. But if fools are going to burn a flag, it would be wise to burn your own flag and not somebody elses attached to their house. I think this is- or should be a felony- and the students that are foreign or immigrants sent home for it.

Believe it or not, I do too. It is an expression of free speech, but if somebody chooses to lay a smack down on the burner, the fine is $1.

It’s a protected form of expression to burn the flag. I say that through gritted teeth. I hope they throw the book at these a$$holes.

It is legal to burn the flag when it is tattered beyond repair. That is the only way to dispose of it properly. The boy scouts as well as some Veterans groups can do that in the proper way in a ceremony.

Doesnt burning a flag produce green house gases??

Seriously, I have always thought the way to deal with this is through vandalism and theft laws.

Protesters rarely burn a flag that they, themselves, purchased.

I think it would only be fair to require a burning permit, like we do with farmers, proof of ownership, and safety considerations like a fire extinguisher or hose at the ready.

    Recognize the 1st Amendment.

Also, recognize that we are dealing with idiots who might hurt someone, idiots who will rarely meet the permit and ownership and safety requirements.

Nail them not for their free expression, nail them for their lack of safety considerations.

Oh, yah, hit them with a “carbon tax” too!

One of the ways the Phelp’s clan enjoy inciting others is to drag the flag on the ground while they protest at funerals…talk about true assholes who just love to be hated.

Well, if nothing else, the incident paints a pretty clear picture of the values and cognizant functions instilled by a Yale education. Didn’t our fearless leader graduate from there?
