“We should not march into Baghdad. To occupy Iraq would instantly shatter our coalition, turning the whole Arab world against us and make a broken tyrant into a latter-day Arab hero. Assigning young soldiers to a fruitless hunt for a securely entrenched dictator and condemning them to fight in what would be an unwinable urban guerilla war, it could only plunge that part of the world into ever greater instability.”

“I think it is vitally important for a President to know when to use military force. I think it is also very important for him to know when not to commit U.S. military force. And it’s my view that the President got it right both times, that it would have been a mistake for us to get bogged down in the QUAGMIRE inside Iraq.”

After reading the bs spread about both Jessica Lynch and Pat Tillman by the military of our country, one wonders just how much bs is coming out of Iraq. What can and cannot you believe by the powers that be?

With a shrub as commander-in-chief, who seems to at least condone instead of condemn, these stories, one again wonders what bs has come out of his mouth; like about the whole damn war in Iraq that is taking children form both our and their countries and burying them.

The republicans spent eight years trashing Clinton because he got a bj, yet condone the lies perpetrated by Bush that has led to thousands of deaths.

No wonder the “elephant” got blown out of the water last election. Let’s hope the same thing happens on a more massive scale next election. We don’t need more dead soldiers caused by lies and deceit.

    Help? Insight?

I was doing some research about elder care for a friend and came across this in Lawrence, Ks: :

    From the web page:

Hearth House is a home environment based on an innovative social model emphasizing choice, respect, dignity and kindness. We offer 24-hour domestic and personal care for those who cannot remain safely alone in their own home. Hearth House is an alternative to institutional living.

The Hearth House philosophy of operation is to provide assistance in a home environment and insure that residents receive choice, respect, dignity and kindness.

    More here:

    A new concept?

Anyone have any experience with this type of facility? We are planning a trip to see the facility — any insight you can provide will certainly help.

That’s admirable ken, but this style of home has been around for many years.

Not sure about your family, but my family has always visited our elder family members in this style of home. Great Aunts, second cousins, didn’t matter, they needed to be looked after and cared for and not forgotten.

Notice how Republican went straight for the cheap shot when Ken was simply asking for information about a specific assisted-living facility?

Without knowing a thing about Ken’s situation, he ad homenimed him by asserting that the question implied a lack of concern.

Maybe if the man didn’t hate himself so much, he could show more respect for others.

And here’s another Republican who seems similar to our own Republican:

“Apparently, Sheryl Crow can’t touch Deputy White House Chief of Staff Karl Rove on the topic of global warming.

“The singer and Laurie David, her partner on the Stop Global Warming College Tour, had a less than friendly encounter with Rove at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner Saturday, according to numerous published reports.

“The trouble reportedly began when Crow and David approached Rove at the event and urged him to take a ‘fresh look’ at the science of global warming.

“According to David’s account of the exchange, which was published on the Huffington Post, the senior White House advisor ‘immediately got combative,’ and launched into a defensive recitation of the administration’s global warming policy.

“When Crow laid a hand on Rove’s arm to try and diffuse the situation, he shook her off, snapping, ‘Don’t touch me!’

Crow responded, ‘You can’t speak to us like that, you work for us,’ to which Rove replied, ‘I don’t work for you; I work for the American people.’

“‘We are the American people,’ Crow reminded him.

“David, the producer of ‘An Inconvenient Truth,’ described Rove as ‘dismissive, condescending, and quite frankly a bully.’

“‘Drama aside, you would expect as an American citizen to be able to engage in a civil discussion with a public official,’ she wrote.”

Heheheheeh Capn. You know, Jan Pauls did the same thing to me. We were at Washington Days wearing the same jacket.

After she stood up and did her little gay hate speech in 2004, some of us went over to “talk” to her. I reached out to touch her jacket and say “well, at least we like the same color” when she drew back and screamed “dont touch me!”

There were some folks from Wichita standing by who saw it all. We were so dumbfounded, we just let her stomp away while we picked our jaws up off the floor.

Heheheheh. I guess she is so homophobic she was afraid she’d catch lesbian cooties from my hand on her jacket?

I guess when you are a DINO, and a member of the ruling class, you should probably wear a button that says “one simply may not speak to the QUEEN that way”…

    Ken,

Hearth House is assisted living or, to be more exact, nursing home lite. Each of those “ammenities” listed has a charge. They pay rent (room and board), then pay for each service. Some are better than others. Private rooms can mean just about anything, but usually just a room where they can keep their personal belongings–furniture, a few knick-knacks, TV, etc.

But they do manage to make it sound good.

Ken, it all depends. I worked briefly with an assisted living center, and it was crap. I literally had one woman who had not been moved from 7am to 7pm. I expected the care there to be so much better because the staffing was supposed to be better because the care was supposed to be lighter. But it wasn’t. They asked us to falsify documents to show the people required less care than they did so that they could stay living there. I was even told not to feed someone for that very purpose. I refused, this woman worked so hard just to take a drink. And she ate so well when I fed her.

your best indication of how they care for their patients, is to pay attention to the ones who require the most care and have no family around. See how many aides there are compared to how many wheelchairs (not always, but a decent indicator of the amt of care they require). Another thing, if there are a lot of people in wheelchairs who probably could walk, that’s also not a good sign. The residents need ambulated, and to and from meals is the usual time to do that. Go during dinnertime so you can see them all out in the dining area. Watch how the staff interacts with the residents.ASK what the staffing ratio is.

    Posted April 25, 2007 at 9:25 am | Permalink

Oops Kev, when you ask the staffing ratio, ask SPEFICICALLY aides to residents.

When they do ratios, they include all staff, including RN’s and LPN’s in that number and they usually don’t do the direct cares.

A follow-up to a “conversation” GMC and I were having last week concerning why Cho wasn’t on the central repository of information given the determination of his mental illness which would have shown up when the background check was run.

It turns out, according to an article on cnn.com I read two days ago, and confirmed on one of the news shows I saw yesterday, that while Virginia is one of 22 states that does report mental illness, under state law, only those who had been committed were so reported. Thus, as he was not committed, but ordered to out-patient counseling, under state law, Cho was not reported. I understand that the governor, et al, of the Commonwealth of Virginia, are looking at this to possibly close the loophole.

Ken, go to the “Dept of Ageing” on the web and look up “Home Plus Facilities”. We had my mom in a nursing home and couldn’t take the neglect she was suffering, we found these places and it’s been a God-send for her and us. The one my mom is in would be glad to take you though their place, they have a waiting list but there are over 20 places like this in Wichita. Email me and I’ll give you more info…I love having my mom there, she gets wonderful care from a very loving staff, the ratio is 4 residents to 1 aide, and there are two RNs on call 24/7. There is a max of 8 residents in a home. Home cooked meals and a real home environment.

PMom, you go girl! Why don’t you be as nice to her as she is ugly to you? She won’t get the reaction she wants and it will probably drive her nuts. Those sickos feed off the anger they stir up.

    “Cho was not reported.”

That was my understanding also, VT. As I undersand it, in Kansas the District Attorney’s office turns over names to the state. That would be all for whom there was reason to evaluate for the need of involuntary commitment and not just those who ultimately were involuntarily committed. So, in KS, Cho would have been on our list to not sell him a firearm.

Ya know, I think I see a pattern developing in the republican controlled kansas legislature. While they love to beat their chests about state’s rights and how the feds should butt out of their business…

…they sure dont take that attitude about local governments in Kansas.

They want the state laws on guns to override the ability of local communities to say “not in these places”.

Lance Kinzer just about wet himself in his hurry to get the STATE to tell LOCAL leaders they could not have domestic partnership registries if they chose them.

See anything in common there? And governor leadership, the best republican governor we’ve had :) had NO problem giving tax cuts on business inventories when THAT revenue when to the local governments.

She also had no problem taking away significant returns of sales tax money to clean up the budget crisis early in her term.

Who said shit rolls downhill? In Kansas, that sure seems to be true. The legislature AND the governor have no problem stepping on local government decisions.

Well, it looks like little miss goodling, god’s own laywer, was just waiting for the right immunity deal to start singing.

    Breaking: Goodling granted immunity.

The House Judiciary Committee voted moments ago to grant immunity to Monica Goodling — former counsel to Alberto Gonzales and the Justice Department’s liaison to the White House — and issue a subpoena compelling her to testify. Yesterday, fired U.S. Attorney David Iglesias said he believes that Goodling holds the “keys to the kingdom” in terms of uncovering the roots of the U.S. Attorney purge:

I think Monica Goodling is holding the keys to the kingdom. I think if they get her to testify under oath with a transcript, and have her describe the process between the information flow between the White House counsel, White House and the Justice Department, I believe the picture becomes a lot clearer.

    http://thinkprogress.org/2007/04/25/breaking-goodling-g... /

And with jack abramhoff singing so long and loud that “he doesnt have time to eat”, and “everyone who had business dealings with him should be worried”…

I say LET THE GAME BEGIN!

Ken,The important thing to know is whether the facility you are visiting is an assisted living facility, a home plus, or a nursing home. The industry is changing drastically and there is a big push toward resident centered care. Instead of the caregivers making the decision about what a person needs or wants we should be letting the person tell caregivers what they want. There are nursing homes that are building and developing homes, setting up “neighborhoods” within the facility. The goal is to provide the care that’s needed while preserving the person’s independence and dignity. The problem that comes up with environments other than nursing homes is that they can be very expensive and folks with limited funds cannot afford assisted living. If the person’s primary payer source is Medicaid they will have to go to the nursing home unless they are on home bound community services. If a person goes to assisted living they usually have to be somewhat self sufficient and able to feed and toilet themselves. The “greenhouses” are being build by several companies are for those residents that need a higher level of care and are excellent for the most part and are the way of the future. If you want to know about those in you area check out the Dept on Aging web site and the Nursing Home Compare site.

After this early morning posts, I got to thinking about the joy and pain and thought that maybe sharing the “joy” here might inspire some to call Mom / Dad, visit a sick friend, the VA … etc ……

Initially mom would screech out Keennnnnniee (you’d have to be there) …. when she needed something and couldn’t get out of bed. I put a metal hand bell on her night stand , and it was way too loud, then a ceramic bell that was quieter ….. If I didn’t show up “RIGHT NOW” she’d ring it continuously , even after I said be right there —- one day I got tired of it and stuffed it with cotton so it wouldn’t make a sound —- when she screeched my name and said the bell is broken — I showed her the cotton and told her about my issue with the bell and kidding said next time you ring it more than twice it will be broken …… she smiled and said “I really just wanted you closer … “

She taught me how to make her potato pancakes from scratch, beef w/mushroom gravy, little pecan cups / cookies, how to get scrambled eggs as fluffy as hers …..

I got all the dirt she had on my brothers (I have tons of fun with that at holidays), and the gossip about relatives and neighbors ….

Took her to church on Saturday evenings, one night I asked her what the numbers where on the sign next to the side altar, (I knew what they were) she said those are hymnal numbers — I replied — … thought they were last nights winning lotto numbers — a quick jab to my ribs, and a laugh that forced the oxygen tube from her nose ….. Priceless ….

Lots of others —- but finally

After 7 years of her fighting her ailments, seeing her at rest and peace ……

The issue now on Ms Goodling is whether she accepts the offer; there was some discussion at the time she announced she would assert her Fifth Amendment rights if this was the opening ante in trying to get immunity. The offer is, as I understand it, for “limited-use” immunity, which is likely not what she was trying to get.

The film, the Great Global Warming Swindle, was first shown on March 8, and was criticised by scientists as distorted and misleading….Dr Allen said: “What Martin Durkin and Channel 4 don’t understand is the way science works. Science is about the arguments, not the people who make them.”…The letter was coordinated by Bob Ward, a former press officer with the Royal Society. He said: “This isn’t about censorship, it’s a question of quality control. We have no objection to the DVD being distributed if all the errors are corrected, but if they correct all the errors then the whole premise of the program will fall to pieces.” “

A bit more; the reason I term the House vote today as an “offer” is because under the law, the grant must be issued by a federal court. The committee must file an application for the same with the court, and give the AG 10 days notice. Thereafter, DOJ has 20 days to produce, in camera, evidence of any ongoing criminal investigations which might be adversely affected by a grant of immunity. From what I read in kfg’s link, as well as the story on cnn.com, there does not appear to be a problem in this regard.

From various sources on the net, I also learned that if she doesn’t appear voluntarily (hence my comment on acceptance), the committee issues a subpoena, triggering the immunity grant; then, should she not appear, she may be prosecuted for contempt of congress, punishable by up to one year in prison if convicted.

Why “limited-use” is important to Ms Goodling, IMO; it doesn’t cover perjured testimony. She, as I recall, in asserting her Fifth Amendment rights, was concerned about a “perjury trap”; this is not cured by a grant of “limited-use” immunity. However, I’m at a loss on this, as she has not provided testimony under oath nor to the FBI on the matter at hand; thus, it is hard to imagine a perjury charge if she truthfully testifies.

    Wait Upon the Lord

After starting a new diet I altered my drive to work to avoid passing my favorite bakery.I accidentally drove by the bakery this morning and as I approached, there in the window were a host of goodies.I felt this was no accident, so I prayed … “Lord, it’s up to you, if you want me to have any of those delicious goodies, create a parking place for me directly in front of the bakery.” And sure enough, on the eighth time around the block, there it was!God is so Good!”

    then —-

A woman calls her boss one morning and tells him that she is staying home because she is not feeling well.”What’s the matter?” he asks .”I have a case of anal glaucoma,” she says in a weak voice.”What the hell is anal glaucoma?”

“I can’t see my ass coming into work today.

I got a p/t job working for a Jewish philanthropist to get me out of the house for 20 hrs a week ….

There was a front page article about my boss’s dad and the head of another wealthy family in Chicago donating 60 million to IIT for a new engineering building —- she saw it and lamented kind of angrily —”…. those damn jews throwing there money around like that ….. ”

after a moment — I said to her “… you’re just mad they didn’t give it to you … ”

Please use your “degree isn’t a science degree” to prove that ‘Swindle’ did NOT make the following misrepresentations.

    http://www.climateofdenial.net/?q=node/3

    * “Now” equals the year 1975.* Graphs from NASA that are significantly different from NASA’s graphs.* False claim that model and recorded data are inconsistent for global average temperatures.* False claim that volcanoes produce more CO2 than humans.* “… clearly misrepresented the conclusions of the paper by Caillon and his co-authors”* Dr. Carl Wunsch: “…diametrically opposite to the point I was making – which is that global warming is both real and threatening”.* “The programme acutely misrepresented the current state of knowledge about the impact of solar activity on global average temperature.”

And… you can get $100 in iTunes, if you’re the 1st person to find the department of climatology at the University of Winnipeg.http://www.desmogblog.com/a-global-warming-swindle-play-by-play

    From my friend, Bill:

Terrorists want us out of Iraq.

Democrats want us out of Iraq.

    Therefore, Democrats support terrorism.

I carefully explained to him that the ability to draw a specific point of commonality between two elements is not sufficient to draw a conclusion that those two elements have anything else whatsoever in common. I could say:

    The pope opposes abortion.

    George Bush opposes abortion.

    Osama bin Laden opposes abortion.

Therefore, The Pope supports Bush and bin Laden, Bush supports the pope and bin Laden, and bin Laden supports the pope and Bush.

I tried to get him to understand that misusing a logical device in order to support a contention only serves to corrupt and mangle whatever dialogue is in progress, and that a person who does this sort of thing either does it unknowingly, in which case a re-examination of one’s understanding of logical process is in order; or they do it intentionally, in which case not only is their intended point justifiably dismissable, but they reveal themselves to be the worst sort of charlatan. Try to “dispute” his MIT credentials, work, and criticism of ‘Swindle’.http://puddle.mit.edu/~cwunsch/

Events leading up to Iraq War and description of the Liberation of Iraq into Public Law

I don’t even think our resident lawyers can argue against this that Congress passed a Law twice to help Iraq achieve Democracy.

Bob will just use one of drunken stupid phrases.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2003_invasion_of_Iraqtext describing the 1998 act signed by President Clinton

“The United States Congress also passed the “Iraq Liberation Act” in October 1998 after Iraq hadterminated its cooperation with the U.N. in August. The act provided $97 million for Iraqi”democratic opposition organizations” in order to”establish a program to support a transition to democracy in Iraq.” (Public Law 105-338)

2002Authorization for Use of Military Force Against Iraq Resolution of 2002 (Reported in House)

“Whereas the Iraq Liberation Act of 1998 (Public Law 105-338) expressed the sense of Congress that it should be the policy of the United States to support efforts to remove from power the current Iraqi regime and promote the emergence of a democratic government to replace that regime”Forces against Iraq.Sponsor: Rep Hastert, J. Dennis [IL-14]

    (introduced 10/2/2002) Cosponsors (136)Related Bills: H.RES.574, H.J.RES.110, S.J.RES.45,

S.J.RES.46Latest Major Action: Became Public Law No: 107-243

2004 State of The Union Address supporting Democracy for Iraqhttp://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2004/01/20040120-7.html

Notice how both bills passed Congress for the purposes of:

“…remove from power the current Iraqi regime and promote the emergence of a democratic government to replace that regime.”

This is Public Law, it is referenced and on the books.

Part of the goals was to help Iraq achieve a democratic government.

The Liberal naysayers can cry all they want, but it is written, passed and approved by both the House and Senate of the United States that we will help Iraq achieve a Democratic government.
