Good for President Bush for continuing to push for comprehensive immigration reform. But his new proposal isn’t practical and is unlikely to attract much new support.
Although Bush has been vague about details, the new plan reportedly would require each illegal immigrant to return to his country of origin and pay a $10,000 fine to obtain a three-year work visa. But it’s unlikely that the estimated 12 million illegals who are already in the United States would be willing or able to return to their countries and pay that much money. Or that our economy could handle the disruption. Many GOP lawmakers who are skittish about anything that might be considered “amnesty” also are unlikely to support Bush’s plan to allow those who arrived in the United States prior to June 1, 2006, to seek citizenship if they pay fees and fines and meet other criteria — even though it’s a reasonable proposal.

How about an amnesty program? Companies that have illegals on their payroll come forward and admit they do, ID the ones they want to keep, pay a reasonable admin fee per person, the illegal is put on a track for citizenship that must be completed in a specified period of time. The ones not wanted are sent back to the country of origin at the employers expense.

It is time to take our country back!! Round up ALL ILLEGAL aliens and their families and ship them back to where they came from. Tyler – your interpretation of the Heritage study is flawed. The 2.3 trillion cost if for ALL low-education households – both citizen and non-citizen. They do note that 2/3 of non-citizen households are low-skill but do NOT state that a similar fraction of total low-skill households are illegals. I would be interested in knowing just how many of the low-skill households are citizens. Also, this is quite an indictment of our education policies.

Yes, putting the burden on those that hire them is the route to self deportation.
The penalties need be much higher and they need to be CRIMINAL.
We can start with seizing the assets of the business. Then criminalizing not only the Management but the actual top 5 Stockholders and board of directors. If you arrest a few of the owner/stockholders you will get some new directions.
If they are going to have a guest worker program you can get the ones here now to go home by saying that NO ONE will be hired that IS HERE AFTER JAN 1 2008. They will ALL be hired through agencies located IN MEXICO. And the Birthright citizenship will NOT attach to these GUESTS while they are here .
We simply can not have 20 million GUESTS having anchor babies that will never leave.
The current Familial system results in 273 people per LEGAL immigrant. If you legalize ONE person, they are allowed to bring in every Aunt, Uncle, Cousin, 2nd cousin, grandpa, grandma, brothers, sisters etc. Up to 273 per person….so its not just AN immigrant, each one of these “immigrants” can amount to 273 people…

Canada requires hiring them IN Mexico, the Company hiring must provide each worker with tickets TO and FROM Canada. They are also required to check out when they leave and are allowed to stay only X amount of months. No permanency

The “Minutemen” were up in the Capitol in full force this session. One of them even had to be physically escorted out of a hearing room by State Troopers after attempting to intimidate one of the state reps on the committee.
A Texas friend of mine used to joke about the traffic in Houston, Dallas, San Antonio…
He said the quickest way to clear the roads is to announce on the radio in Spanish that there will an ID and Driver’s License road block and check station.
The traffic somehow becomes much lighter after those announcements. :)

Okay, when I read this study, I could have sworn it was studying households whose head of household did not have a H.S. diploma. At the very end, during the conclusion, illegals were mentioned, but the study was NOT specifically about them. Good argument for us to make sure that our children do not drop out of school and become a public burden, but I don’t see the illegal alien argument in here.
Everybody ignores the FACTS on this issue and they all say “ship em all back” or give them a “path to citizenship”. I am not for either. The FACTS are this- we NEED these people as much as they need us. The USA is now in the 5th year of an economic boom of historic job growth. We have an unemployment rate of about 4 percent and falling. Millions of new jobs are expected over the next decade at the same time millions of baby boomers will be leaving the labour force. Without immigrants, our economy will simply stop. Nobody else is going to pick the lettuce, do hot hard roofing and construction work or wash dishes. No Americans want that kind of work. Only the Mexicans are willing to do it and we need it done. So we need to give them AMNESTY and keep them here. What I oppose is a “path to citizenship”. Citizenship should be reserved for those who waited in line and came here legally. Those who sneak in should never get citizenship unless they serve in the armed forces of the United States. But they should be given a “path to permanent residency” if the work, pay taxes, learn English and stay out of any trouble with the law. I would have a program where they could have a 5 year guest worker permit and, if they met those conditions after 5 years, they would be granted Permanent Residency and could live the rest of their lives in the USA but they could not vote, sponsor other immigrants or hold a US passport. That is the price for sneaking in.

This is the part that DISallows those here at the behest of their government from having babies and automatically becoming citizens. Such as, if the French ambassadors wife has a baby here, it is NOT a citizen. He is here at the behest of his government and is NOT “under the jurisdiction of the US”. He is a GUEST.
So it can be done this way if they work with the Mexican government and designate them so (doubtful since the Mexican gubment is such a whore) . Or make it part of a labor contract PRIOR to coming in.
Both the UK and Australia revoked this same nonsense in the 1980’s due to the same crap. Ireland in ‘04. They all saw what was happening to their countries.
But it needs to be changed here in any case. Reading the congressional record when it was adopted actually states who it was initially referring to from the guy who wrote it. Obviously all the reasons did not make it in, so it still needs to be changed.

All the roofers around here I see are Mexicans. Almost all the construction workers I see are Mexican. And if people think Americans want these jobs, come down here. Downtown hotels are paying 12 to 15 dollars an hour for housekeepers and STILL are unable to hire enough legal help. And with unemployment rates headed to virtually zero, the problem will only get much worse. We should be thankful to the Mexicans who sneak in and do all the dirty work so we can live good and stay clean.
No disagreement from me on that. Even if it is shoplifting or DUI- one offense and they are outta here. We have enough homegrown criminals and idiots. We don’t need to import any from Mexico.

I understand Illegals will get reduced rate college tuition, free health care, social security (even though they never paid in), food stamps, and only have to pay taxes on two of the last five years ……. Can sombody tell us what the process is to be an illegal alien so I too can only pay 2 of the last 5 years of income taxes and get all these free benefits too?

We all must remember too that, for many employers, it is not just low wages that make the Mexicans attractive. They also have a better work ethic than we Americans do for the most part. They show up on time everyday ready to work while Americans call in sick on Monday and Friday and often show up drunk or on drugs the rest of the week. In addition Mexicans rarely backtalk the boss or say things like “it ain’t my job” when asked to perform task that might be outside the normal scope of their job.
