First, campaigning in rural New Hampshire, GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney said he had “been a hunter pretty much all of my life” — which, his campaign later acknowledged, meant he’d hunted once each in his teens and his 50s. In Indianapolis, he said, “I’ve always been a rodent and rabbit hunter. Small varmints, if you will. I began when I was 15 or so, and I have hunted those kinds of varmints since then. More than two times.”
Will the fond talk of varmint hunting, and a National Rifle Association membership less than a year old, satisfy the GOP’s die-hard Second Amendment sector, especially with Romney having supported gun control as Massachusetts governor?

Where’s my twice barrel shoot gun when I need it.
What is even more interesting about Romney’s pretensions about hunting was his claim to be a gun owner. The truth is that he doesn’t own a gun. Sooo here we have another Republican candidate that is already telling lies. As the author of the Boston Globe article said, “Leave it to Mitt Romney to shoot himself in the foot with a gun he doesn’t own.”
Gees this man panders more than McCain. I guess all the GOP candidates hope the right wing forgets all their past votes on guns, God and abortion. And since Republicans are stupid for the most part they probably will. While the Democrats will be debating things like health care, the war and education, it will be funny to see the Republicans debate who shot the most animals! Gawd what a bunch of loser rednecks!
Romney won’t win. Not because he has not shot enough animals but because he is a Mormon. The fundie idiots in the GOP base will never go for that because most of them do not consider Mormons to be “real Chirstians”. And besides the country wants a First Lady- not a First, Second, Third and Fourth Lady!
Romney has been married the least often of all the Republican front-runners.
No doubt the guy is a misdirected clown…and an embarrassment. But, realistically, you cannot apply his idiotic statements to all candidates.
“And since Republicans are stupid for the most part”
Was that really necessary?!?!?
AFN,
Judging by the way Republican Presidential candidates treat their voter base, always promising things they have no intention of delivering (an end to Roe v. Wade, for example), it’s pretty clear THEY think y’all are “stupid for the most part.”
“And since Republicans are stupid for the most part”Ok I guess it is time to reestablish my credentials, I am a Republican! No I do not agree with a good deal that come out of the talking heads that CLAIM to be Republican, conservative or the right. But the key phrase is “talking heads” they no more talk for the party at large then “YAHOOOOO” Dean does for the entire Democratic party!
Some of the more public faces on either party are an embarrassment to all who share the title. Perhaps I am an out dated Republican, of late I fall short of touting the “party line” I am one of the first to point out the failings of all the partisan nonsense. I knew by the time of the 2004 election that what Bush&Co. were saying was not factual.I have found differing degree of my brother Republicans here, at time I feel alone in being a moderate voice for the party. I am not and off and on we may agree on issues.
It has become maddening to me that the Right has taken to using simplistic phrases and mottos to answer hard questions. The whole “cut and run” crap is trying to play to unthinking minds. But the Right does have a point in that what has the Left done lately to solve the issue? Fine yes I agree with the Bipartisan commission for the most part. But what in the hell is anyone Right or Left doing but fighting and insulting each other to make it happen?
I will not list all the stupid things that some Democratic talking head has said. Or done to pander to the extreme in their party. We have the “Chicken hawks” who think the only thing to do is kill and blow up anyone that does not agree with us. But then how good is it to have a guy dressed in pink and as a woman standing in the back of a hearing holding up a sign “Impeach Bush”? Is he a poster child for the left? Should I judge the entire Democratic party by that fool? I did not think so!
The main part of the Republican party lost out to our extreme sects, that has become a problem for those of us that still hold to the principals of the party that are right and good.Believe me I hate that the R.R. Neo-Cons and the Chicken hawks have become the face and voice most expected from the party.
But Stupid for the most part? No on a bad day!
Romney being a Mormon is going to hurt him more than token gestures to the gun lobby. And Reagan didn’t have a problem with them and he supported gun control as gov. of California
Writerdog, if you disagree more often than agree with the Republican maybe its time to change your registration, become a independent perhaps.
CF2K, I can’t completely disagree with your version of the statement, but that is NOT what Kev said.
Writer, I know how you feel:) I consider myself a moderate…
Tom the thought has occurred to me of late, but like Iraq to leave with out a plan just leave the situation to those that wish no good. Like it or not, there really are just the two parties. I have been a republican for now on thirty years, as some have already noted I could fit in with a good number of the Democrat party in a way.
LoL I work with a Democrat from Oklahoma, he enjoy discussing Politics, the Iraq war and the like. ( Admit it is refreshing since the majority at work at time can not remember who the President is or care. But can name the starting line of WSU basket ball), last week I asked him if he knew what the difference between a Moderate Republican and a Oklahoma Democrat is? He said he did not, I said “Nothing!”. I actually was given more grief over being a “Damn Yankee” then being only one of two republicans in the town.
I am a fiscal conservative, which sets me against Bush. I am a Federalist which set me against the “Big Government Conservatives” of the Neo-Cons along with I do not believe that America should be a imperialist force in the world. But of course all that also somewhat sets me against a number of things that the Democratic party believes in.As a independent I would just feel like I would be setting on the side lines telling both teams they suck!
Writerdog–
Great post, except for one error. Having spent some time in the south, DAMNYANKEE is one word!If I were to have to pin my self down, I guess I would have to be a “fedralist”. I prefer the term Constituitonalist, but it’s basically the same.
Yeah but in Oklahoma while I live there. I came to believe every sentence started, had it in the middle or ended with the term. “DAMNYANKEE” your right though Kind of like We Be which I never heard pronounced other then WEBE!
Funny story for Dub-Dog……..
In the early Eighties, I was transferred to Western North Carolina from Michigan for my job. As a manager, the “natives” thought little of the Yankees showing up to tell them how to do their jobs. That was funny in it’s self, since the Northern based company had put the plant there in the first place.
What was funny was I was a Damned Yankee, just like all the rest.
Except, I had been born less than 125 miles west of the plant.
Sometimes, you can’t win for being a Southern Boy no matter what you do.
“The fundie idiots in the GOP base will never go for that because most of them do not consider Mormons to be “real Chirstians”.”- Kev
All but the most self-righteous and strident of Christians will decide their vote based on issues and principles, rather than on religion. Of course they are the ones that get the press, so don’t be fooled. I think Romney will rise or fall on issues other than his religion. Like perceived flip flops.
Oh and “Kev”. I would probably qualify as one of the “fundie idiots” in your world. I would ask that, unless you are man enough to call me that to my face, you cool it with the gratuitous insults.
“I don’t feel in no ways tired……….of hunting”
The reason for that is because you ARE alone! The “moderates” in the GOP are largely GONE. The party has been taken over by the super rich, the religious fundie idiots and an assortment of screwball right wingers, racist and Timothy McVeigh wannabes!
“I have found differing degree of my brother Republicans here, at time I feel alone in being a moderate voice for the party. I am not and off and on we may agree on issues.”
Sure they will. Like they did with JFK. I am quite sure James Dobson, John Hagee and the rest of the screwball religious zealots will vote for a Mormon.
“All but the most self-righteous and strident of Christians will decide their vote based on issues and principles”
I would hope you are not an idiot religious fundie. I would hope that you actually have a mind of your own and can think for yourself. But if the show fits… well you know the rest.
“Oh and “Kev”. I would probably qualify as one of the “fundie idiots” in your world. I would ask that, unless you are man enough to call me that to my face, you cool it with the gratuitous insults.”
Well Kev, It appears that you and I won’t get along. Your choice.
If you can’t make an argument without resorting to insults, well the idiot/biggot isn’t the person or group you insult.
If one can think for themselves how could they deny the historical evidence “fundie idiots” know as Truth?
Or are you just following the popular culture off cliffs like the rest of the lemmings?
Writerdog,
Thanks for several refreshingly reasonable posts here. It’s so nice to interact with people I don’t necessarily agree with, but who express healthy degree of incredulity about our political situation without simply writing everything off to “politics.”
I do want to offer one observation about your post. You reference the code pink protesters that frequently show up in the gallery at Congressional hearings and such. I’m much closer to their position than you are, and I’m far from ready to condemn them for having the courage to get out in the world and stand up for their beliefs. Having said that, even I occasionally find myself annoyed by their presence during important testimony. Tactics like that can serve to create a distracting circus atmosphere that is actually harmful to their cause. SO… even though we come at it from completely different angles, we’re somewhat in agreement there.
However, I have to note that those people have NO POWER. They aren’t elected. They aren’t Democratic party officials. They don’t have their own radio or TV shows. They aren’t regular guests on any of those shows. This is very often the case for people who are held up as alleged “poster children” for the Democrats. After 9/11 I heard for months about the offensive writings of some absurdly obscure left wing professor from Colorado as though this guy was anyone of any significance. No one knew who the hell that clown was, and yet all the wingnut cable shows made him into a Democratic poster boy. It was nearly the equivalent of finding GSheridan’s “Pope on a rope” comment from earlier today and expecting all right wing reglious figures answer for it. Who the hell is GSheridan, anyway?
I really don’t mean to miss your larger point that YOU don’t mean to hold the entire Democratic party to account for Code Pink’s behavior. But I hope you’ll see my point, that those who, to my mind, are the far right ideological equivalent of Code Pink, often have FAR more power and FAR greater access to ACTUAL Republican officials. Ann Coulter has gotten a lot of attention for her recent offensive remarks at CPAC. Limbaugh, Hannity, Glenn Beck and others frequently say things just as out of bounds. And yet, the Vice President regularly appears on Limbaugh’s show. Personally I find the combination of their behavior and POWER far more offensive and troubling than a few excentric peace activists briefly disrupting congressional testimony.
I don’t mean to speak for you, but I think this dynamic in the Republican party is a major reason why reasonable conservatives such as yourself feel alone in your “moderation.”
Writerdog,
One quick note of clarification: When I said “Thanks for several refreshingly reasonable posts here,” I most certainly did NOT mean to imply that you are usually unreasonable. I meant your posts in this thread were refreshingly reasonable in relation to the contributions of most others on this blog.
condor on another point we can agree, though since getting cable I have started watching many of those “right wing commentators”. I find them coming to a topic more from a blind hate P.O.V then from a factual prospective. Though they often point out things that are true, such as when O’Reily stated the day after several children were killed in a fire in NYC that if the authorities had enforced the law the children would not have been killed in that fire. It was factually true but heartless and unfeeling for him to make a Politic point of it. Though the real world is effected by it, the world is not all about partisan politics.
Perhaps that is why I differ from others you may find here, to me Iraq and detracting of Bush is not about partisan politics. To me the invasion was Un-American, my opinion of Bush is continually honed with the more I learn of what is going on and who is playing a part in the actions being done. I could possibly fill a few pages what the information I have been learning.
I try to be reasonable in most of my dealings but you cannot be reasonable with right wing nutcases and religious zealots. You cannot win an argument with them so there is really no use in getting into one. They believe what they believe whether the Earth is flat or not. I don’t have a problem with idiots who reject science and reject reason themselves. I have a problem when they attempt to force their view of God and the world on everybody else which they do quite often.
“I don’t have a problem with idiots who reject science and reject reason themselves.”
Yeah, no problem there…
Kev since I am probably one of those to who you refer, I wish I could be more reasonable and tolerant like you are. I wish I could see both side of a discussion as fair minded as you. You put those of us who are always calling others names to shame with your level headed approach to sensible discussion. Once more a leftie has displayed their ability to be open and honest in their discussions.
I humbly thank you for your well thought out approach to civilized discussion.

Why is it those who scream the loudest against Christianity are doing the exact thing and to the extreme they accuse Christians of doing?Talk about hypocrits!
