Makes you proud to be a Kansan

An Eagle article cited an announcement by the Corporation for National & Community Service that ranks Kansas fifth in the nation for volunteerism. This is just one more reason why Kansas is a great place to live: So many people are involved in their communities and are willing to lend a hand to help others succeed.
In light of all the recent news about self-serving government officials, self-centered celebrities, and downright mean shock jocks, isn’t it nice to know that most of our friends and neighbors are generous and compassionate?

Sort of our family tradition to volunteer. Our names are usually forgotten, but always glad it helped someone.

Even a higher percentage of volunteers in rural and small town Kansas.

Mostly ladies, but there are some men out there too. They all set great examples. Unsung heroes all…

We’re the same way. We raised our children that way.

I much prefer helping others on a volunteer basis – than advocating the government take our taxes and make us a nanny-state.

Helping personally is the way humans should interact.

Our ancestors helped each other as they built this country, building one neighbor’s barn one weekend, and another’s the next. Everyone was involved, the men put up the structure, the women provided food and tried to keep the children out from underfoot, and the communities bonded.

Compare that to the Food Stamp recipient today, that offers to buy her friend’s grocer items, with the Stamps, and be reimbursed with cash – so she can buy drugs.

Of course not all recipients do that – but I had an acquaintance who was often pestered by a friend to do just that.

I’m proud to be a member of the volunteering community, for 12 years now.
