Legislative rookies did what they said they’d do

Most freshmen lawmakers have to bide their time in the background before delivering on their campaign promises. State Reps. Raj Goyle, D-Wichita, and Vince Wetta (in photo), D-Wellington, didn’t wait. Goyle, an attorney, co-wrote the bill to place limits on funeral protests, aimed at the Phelps clan, as he said he would last fall. “This bill is designed to protect a constitutional right to privacy during the funeral of a family that’s mourning a loved one,” Goyle said of the bill, which went to the governor last week. And Wetta was key to ensuring that Sumner County and south-central Kansas generally were included in the gambling expansion. “It’s everything we hoped for,” Wetta said. “Now we’ve got to work together to make this the best deal for the state of Kansas, make sure that the money goes to help people, help the economy, and that we use it wisely.”

Why is it that Dem’s are the only ones that do good for Rhonda? It is widely reported that the deal was cut in the Senate to get the 21st vote that Sumner Co will be cut out of revenue in the trailer bill and Derek Schmidt wrote the Funeral protest bill before and after Goyle’s election?

How many rookie Republicans are there in the South-Central delegation this year?

How many new seats did they pick up down here?

If I were the kind of guy who liked answering his own rhetorical questions, I’d have to say “Zero” and “Zero.”

Oh wait, except for Marc Rhoades beating Tom Thull. Whoops, I stand corrected by myself. But has Rhoades done anything to distinguish himself?

Gosh Rhonda, what great stuff! A funeral bill that does nothing, and Wetta voted for gambling and it passed this year. Yippee!

And the fan-fare with Goyle continues. Just what he needs, more stroking of his ego by the Eagle. The funeral bill is NOTHING new. What is new is that the Phellps clan is now picketing soldiers funerals so the right cares all the sudden.

    Unfair, GayM.

I worked with Goyle’s campaign. He cares about freeing PEOPLE from harassment, not just families of soldiers.

Raj has done more for Kansas in two months than Bonnie “My Property Taxes Never Go Up” Huie did in many many years . . .

Raj Goyle, Terry MacLachlan and Vince Wetta are each a vast improvment over their Republican predecessors. Sedgwick County is lucky to have them. Unless you want legislators who will fall into lockstep behind Brenda Landwehr . . . nah.

When the Phelps start suing people, perhaps we’ll get a ruling that will allow for greater buffer zones around funerals. 150 feet isn’t much.

AG Morrison, according to the article I read is the one that mentioned the 300 feet zone was challenged in other states courts and the bigger zone lost in those court decisions.

Would be interesting to see what was said by Judges to think that 300 feet is not appropriate versus 150 feet.

Sound wave study? Visual line of sight study?

During testimony in House Fed & State, Goyle & Morrison both alluded to the 300 foot zone as being struck down in other states, but I don’t recall them saying much about what the grounds were.

Don’t forget that the eagle was touting Goyle’s “rock star” personality. Too sad that coat-tailing on the funeral protest bill is the most they can puff up for their guy.

And, given his background, shouldn’t he be standing up for Fred and family?

    Roscoe–

    1. Mr. Goyle wrote the bill. He said he would write the bill during the campaign and he did.

The only coat-tails to ride are his.

    2. His family background? His mother and father are first generation immigrants that started with nothing and became respected physicians in the community.

There’s no connection or relation between his background and a hate-monger like Fred Phelps.

    None.
