Delegation stepped up for WaterWalk, riverfront

Good for the Wichita-area legislative delegation for making the case to a conference committee Thursday for extending Wichita’s ability to use sales tax and revenue bonds for WaterWalk and the river corridor improvements. Both chambers still must vote on it, perhaps today, but the measure allows Wichita a specific extension for STAR bonds, which admittedly have been abused elsewhere in the state. City Hall officials said that without action, this top priority for downtown Wichita would be at risk. Now that progress is so visible both on WaterWalk work and the riverfront upgrade, this is no time for failure.

My guess is SALES TAXES in Wichita will increase to 10% … TEN CENTS on every dollar of groceries you purchase … by January 1st, 2010.

Politicians have no incentive to say NO MORE TAXES to increasing the “easy come, easy go” sales tax.

The WaterWalk going to be great. A much better walking city than Lawrence or Eureka, California for sure.

    Can’t wait until it’s complete.

When will an entrepeneuerial capitalist step forward to participate in this Communist venture? And how can a person who claims to be a Libertarian support such Communism?

“Can’t wait until it’s complete.” And how many more years will that be?

The tax money spent on the waterwalk, airline subsidy, downtown hyatt, arena, ect would be more than enough to fund the cameras for the police, and still give the citizens a nice tax break.

Ben, is Communism a far left ideology, it is odd someone who claims to despise leftists would be a cheerleader for a extremist variety of it.

WaterWalk at great risk according to Allen Bell if they don’t receive some Star Bond funding. That’s not reasonable.

Some of the WaterWalk developers aren’t putting in more as the cost continue to rise.

Time its taken for construction is bogus.

Topeka is being hammered with Star Bond projects by Wyandotte County and Olathe. Legoland Theme Park is on the table.

Olathe wants to construct a soccer stadium, attracting some soccer team from KC possibly.

Star Bonds can’t be used to construct buildings AGAIN, but Olathe is trying to change those rules. Olathe would build a stadium then lease it.

My idea for a new WSU football stadium has the County and City govs as partners. They get some ownership.

Wichita was almost left out because we’re not playing in that game well enough.

    We’re not constructing “destination facilities”

The rules call for $200 Million dollar buildings, but Olathe wants a soccer stadium cheaper than that.

Whoever buys the soccer team will have to pay half cost of the stadium, that’s the right way. More than half the costs actually.

How about nearly all the costs for the stadium by owner of the soccer team. Star Bonds should be used to prepare land, create street scape of the facility and parking.

Olathe and Wynadotte County risk the program, they benefit, plus leave Wichita out if they can.

Star Bonds were changed to keep Wichita from dealing with Bass Pro Shop, thanks to Cabela’s. They and Nebraska Furniture Mart constructed with Star Bonds.

No Star Bonds to construct buildings harmed ideas in Wichita.

Mrage - Wichita has nobody to blame but Wichita for all that. The failure to properly apply and develop this Communist project was the fault of the City officials involved. The failures in Topeka lie at the feet of our local representatives.

Why bother to try building any of it, when it will run everybody away?
