911 only works when dialed

Kids know how to call 911 in case of emergency. But some area adults apparently don’t — or won’t. Two recent Eagle stories have shown what can happen when nobody calls for help: They can get stabbed (trying to break up a fight). Or they can lose their lives or property (if they ignore a wailing smoke detector).
“When people see disturbances at these parties,” Sgt. Steve Yarberry told The Eagle, “call 911 and let us handle it.”
And “if you smell smoke in your house, call 911,” said Fire Marshal Ed Bricknell.
Let’s hope the reluctance to call in fights is an aberration and not some local manifestation of what Anderson Cooper reported on Sunday on “60 Minutes” — the hip-hop “Stop snitchin’” code that effectively means, “don’t cooperate with the police, no matter who you are.”

Calling police is generally useless. You’ll be lucky if they don’t haul YOU away. Only in the most clear cut of situations would I even consider it, and then, only anonymously. When you call 9-11 for a fire, the first thing the cops ask is not the location of the fire, but your name. Generally, cops resent having to work at all, so they come down on the caller. Sorry, that’s just the truth. And use a pay phone, they have caller i.d. for cell phones and home phones.

I will call the cops if I have reason to but I probably won’t call if 2 people are engaged in mutual combat and no weapons are present. I figure they have a score to settle and they are going to settle it sooner or later anyway.

I don’t what experience you’ve had DK, but anytime I’ve had to call 911 I’ve gotten a quick and efficient response. I think for the most part, the police and the emergency response crews do their jobs really well.

I called 911 this past winter. I thought the love of my life was dying in my arms. The firemen were there in about 3 minutes. The ambulance and paramedics less than 5 minutes. In blizzard conditions.

I can’t say enough good about these people. Very professional.

Rather than make insulting generalizations, DK, why not do a little personal research? Contact a patrol bureau and ask to go on a ride along. See first hand what the police put up with, day after day, day in/day out. They are lied to, assaulted, sometimes attacked, and all their actions are examined microscopically after the fact.

Then imagine yourself working 10 hour shifts without a break, dealing with surly people, lying suspects, and gang bangers. Try it sometime, DK. You obviously have a slanted view that is not based on fact. I can say this because I have gone on a ride along, and know I could never, ever do that job.

Had a neighbor who was a cop. He was a friendly guy and all business as a cop.

Must admit though, when I talked to him, I kept my hands out of my pocket and always kept where he could see me if we were talking. :)

I think that Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson should go out into the black community and tell them that calling and informing the police is the right thing to do.

Let’s stop this Stop Snitching campaign.

Cops are like Priests, most are good people but there are enough bad ones to taint peoples opinion of the profession. Also both professions have had a habit of covering up misdeeds by their colleagues.

Here is an ideal and lets not beat around the bushes about it.Let’s gather all these Hip-Hop clowns and their stupid followers drop them off on an island in the middle of nowhere and just leave it up to them to create their own country. They act like they do not want to be members of any kind of a society but their own then let them have it.

Yes, there are some bad cops. But saying that there are enough bad ones to taint the profession is wrong. One or two officers who are “bad” shouldn’t taint the entire profession’s reputation. I have eaten at many restraunts where I had poor service. These “bad” waiters/waitresses did not taint my idea of the profession, nor has it hindered my desire to eat out. People are just looking for excuses to put down someone else. Negativity seems to be the “in thing” nowadays.

Down here in GA at the school in my neighbourhood a motorcycle cop will hide his bike in the bushes and he will hide by a tree with a hand radar unit and, when he catches a speeder, he will actually jump out in the street right in front of the oncoming car and throw his hand up and wave it over! This looks insane to me but I guess he feels like he can jump out of the way if he needs to!
