Dellatorre is correct. No one knows better the necessity to speak English than someone who is here and doesn’t. Actually, they’re much worse off than Americans in Mexico who don’t speak Spanish. In my experience, more people per capita in Mexico speak English than people in America who are fluent in Spanish.
What has always amused me, though, is when someone is speaking to another person in a language that is unfamiliar, the speaker, becoming aware of this, repeats what s/he just said…only much louder. I just want to go up and grab them and yell, “You idiot! The person does not speak English/Spanish/French/Thai (whatever). S/he’s not deaf!!!”. ;)
If we require English can we enforce it on lawyers and the IRS?
I’ve an idea; if the state is to have an official language, why not Latin? That way, everyone has a “new” language to learn. :-)

You forgot to include religion, Mr. Delatorre. Oh, that’s right. There is no God at KU. Skin color or race or RELIGION is not a means of communication, which is at the very core of human interaction. Since you are a professor, I will assume you have some intelligence. So, you know that those who do not speak English in Kansas will have a very difficult time making a living for themselves and their family, which in turn keeps them in a much lower socio-economic level than yourself and in turn makes it very difficult for them to get themself out of that socio-economic condition. And, at the end of day, this is exactly where you want them, so you build your servant population around your castle.
Said a different way, when English in Kansas is expected and spoken, finding a job is easier, they pay more taxes because they earn more money, and they find themselves more empowered, and then they ask themselves, “Why are KU professors wanting to keep me underemployed?” Oh, yeah. It’s because their welfare state would no longer exist!

First off, Did ya’ll ever notice that most bloggers have a great deal of difficulty staying on task. Tend to wander off on one or more of their favorite rants. They must have had a very difficult time in grade school. Anyway, from sea to shining sea, and from border to border we as a collective whole speak English. It might be locally flavored, but it is still English (or Americanese). A person from Jersey can converse with a fella from L.A. And a Bostonian can talk to a farmboy from Kansas. So what is the matter with declaring English as our official language? It is not a racial thing, for Americanese is a blend of many dialects. Nor is it a hate thing, for the simple fact that you (again a collective you) speak the language of the country that you have chosen to live in. It is just good manners. If I choose to move to Mexico, then I will learn to speak Mexicanese. It is just that simple. All people should be proud of who they are and where they came from, but if you are going to leave the country of your birth and move to a new country, then learn to abide by the ways of that country.

I welcome everyone, that is not a criminal, to get in line to come to the USA in an official way, learn and use the english language, pay our taxes, and become an American citizen.
If I moved to another country, they would expect me to learn and use their language, so it is NOT unreasonable to expect the same for people that move here.

Dinner is considered the main (largest) meal of the day. In rural areas, that means the noon meal. Why? People working on farms need a heavier meal to get them through the afternoon. Many work days start at sunrise and end well after dark, when supper, a lighter meal, is served.
Look at it this way. If you eat the heavier meal midday (dinner), you’ll work off the calories and won’t be going to bed with a calorie-loaded stomach and getting fat. ;)
But it pretty much only works in rural areas, because of the time limits on “lunch” in the cities.
