From a commentary by Gov. Kathleen Sebelius recognizing the one-year anniversary this week of the death of photographer, filmmaker and Kansas native Gordon Parks:
“Gordon used his cameras to pierce through the heartache of a nation divided by race to find hope — hope that the next generation would find a way to live together in brotherhood. His lenses shot through poverty to find pride — the pride of men and women who didn’t let their wallets define their worth. And he used the body of his work to blow away the blinders that kept us from seeing that the plight of the poor is the plight of us all.”

To bad his passing was barely noticed, considering the media circus when Anna Nicole Smith died. How screwed up are we that our society is so driven by pop culture? He was a gifted man who never seemed to get the credit or respect he deserved from his homestate. How sad.
Shoot, I must be slipping. Yesterday I found myself agreeing with GSheridan and today I am agreeing with Mary Caruso.
There IS a new sun in the sky.
Gordon Parks was one of the absolutely most talented Kansans, but so few in this state even know the first thing about him. Until I moved, to Kansas, I never even knew that he was a native of this state.
What a talent! Few even know that he was a film maker, novelist, musician as well as a photographer.
Read a bit about one of our own…
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gordon_Parks
Actually WSC, it’s pretty easy to agree with Mary – as we both do on this.
Mary doesn’t like me, Ben. She thinks I got her banned from the blog.
Didn’t happen. I do not dislike Mary, nor have I ever requested anyone be banned, even Ian Santiago.
I saw her return yesterday – WELCOME BACK – I’d guess it was a technical glitch. I have had periods where I can’t make it work and I think others have as well.
Of all the people here I sure cannot see any reason to target Mary for banning. She can be strong on an issue but I don’t think I have ever seen her “cross the line”
Not to hijack the thread, but about the only way to get banned is to post under someone else’s nic.
I had a glitch a while back. My IP would not work because they had banned me when intending to ban someone trolling ME.
Back to Gordon Parks – more Kansans need to be aware of this great talent, but I would think that few even have an idea who he is.
I would bet that more folks know that Kirstie Alley and Joe Walsh are from Wichita than know that Gordon Parks was from Ft. Scott.
Gordon Parks was a truly inspirational artist/warrior with a camera. So was W. Eugene Smith, also from Kansas. Both deserve considerably more recognition than they’ve gotten here.Kansas has been the former home of very many great artists; unfortunately, they had to leave the state to get their just recognition. Maybe that ought to tell us something about ourselves.
I saw some of his pictures at WSU when they were shown there.
Odd for WSU to return the pictures, Parks commented on it.
There should be place to see a larger collection of what he accomplished in Wichita.
I never said I don’t like you WS, and I was kidding when I said you probably got me banned from the blog. If they won’t ban you for calling me a “loser f**king bitch”, they certainly wouldn’t ban me. I don’t talk to people that way.
Mirage, I agree. Why he doesn’t have a permanent collection at the Wichita Art Museum is beyond me.
Well Mary, you accused me of being more intersted in the lives of the terrorists than the lives of the unborn.
Don’t play all sweet and innocent.
I will give you points for trying, however.
WS, when did I say you supported the terrorists? I certainly don’t remember THAT post.I think you’re being a little paranoid….hummmm.
“I think you’re being a little paranoid….hummmm.”
So, Mary, but you need to work on those reading comprehension skills.
The point was that you said I was more interested in the lives of the terrorists than the lives of the unborn.
I would call that a major difference.
I would go back and pull up the exact post, but that process just bores the hell out of me. I do remember it, since, at the time, it really pissed me off, given that I have three children and two grandchildren and could hardly be accused of not caring about their lives pre or post birth.
You can’t go back and pull up the post because I never said it. I’ve never accused anyone of supporting the terrorists. Where the hell you got that I have no idea.
Juest like you had quote from Tiller when he said that he like to eat fetuses, right Mary.
When pushed on the point – you said that it was just your “memory.”
..and I should bow down to you?
But for the record, you said that I defend the …….. over the unborn.
You and I know that I am telling the truth.
It is only you that chooses to deny it.
Mary, I do not know you have been trying to bitch slap me, but from the very first time that I posted here, you have slammed me.
I have never been unkind to you until you accused me of favoring the rapist/killers/terrorists over the unborn.
I reaaly don’t care why you feel such animosity towards me.
But don’t be a hypocrite and deny that you said it….
Okay, I made it all up. Golf Nut never called me a drug addict. Fleet never said that I was a traitor. Raptor never called me a black liar. Khan never called me a homosexual or a drunk.
You’re right. I made it all up.
Excure the f*ck out of me.
What an imagination you have WS! I said Tiller was quoted one time calling malformed fetuses “monsters”, at no time did I ever say he liked to eat them…how gross is that? But I forget, that’s how your little mind works. WHAT I SAID WAS that you had more concern about murderers on death row than you did about innocent life…if you’re going to quote me, at least get it straight.I’ve alsways heard about how smoking weed impairs memory, but in your case I’d suggest you go smoke a joint or two and mellow out a little.
And I don’t feel animosity or anything else towards you, because I don’t take your crap personally…you mean nothing to me, so why in the hell would I care?
