HERE WE GO AGAIN … Wichita Eagle’s opinion writer, Randy Scholfield, is again looking at the proposed $250,000,000.19 downtown white elephant ice hockey arena THROUGH ROSE COLORED GLASSES.

Arena cheerleader Scholfield fails to recognize that a recent local TV station poll showed that 80% of the callers said, WE DON’T WANT IT — WE WANT TO REVOTE THE ARENA NOW THAT WE SEE ALL OF THE DISADVANTAGES OF THIS ALBATROSS TO SEDGWICK COUNTY.

Schofield fails to mention that we have a perfectly good arena in the form of the Kansas Coliseum already with great 4,000 to 5,000 free car parking and within easy driving reach of the entire Wichita metropolitan area. And an attractive recreational area on its site.

True, that aging gentleman, the KANSAS COLISEUM, does need some upgrading after many years of faithful service. Also the adjacent pavilions used for gun shows and horse shows could use some sprucing up perhaps by volunteers to upgrade their usefulness.

DOWNTOWN WICHITA needs a different kind of treatment to give it pizzazz as a number one destination point. It needs a convention center by the Arkansas River with a facelift of the downtown area. The objective is to make downtown Wichita a “walking town” for pedestrians to enjoy like Lawrence, Kansas, and Alexandria, Virginia, and Eureka, California — but with Wichita’s own unique character.

But unfortunately Wichita has failed to come up with a strong leader who can achieve consensus of the citizenry instead of shoving these unworkable TAX SUPPORTED projects onto the backs of the taxpayers of Sedgwick County.

SO LETS RE-VOTE THIS WHITE ELEPHANT NOW.

Why is this STILL flying under the radar and what effect will this have on Kansas?

Some are still calling it the NAFTA Superhighway, but it’s real name is the North American SuperCorridor.

As the path creates a direct North/South route from Old Mexico to Canada, cutting across KS along the 35 turnpike and upwards from KC, it bypasses our intersection of I70 and I35 and may pull not only North/South bound commerce from Central and Western KS, but may drop an influx of illegals in our State.

Actually, the map now shows a slight diversion from its earlier specs – it seems to show that the path with cross KS at a diagonal, starting at OKC and heading towards KC. Before, it showed it extending up to Wichita, first.

Perhaps now, Wichita will be cut out, too.

Anyway, what is the purpose of linking Old Mexico and Canada via the US?

    http://www.nascocorridor.com/add_a_map.html

And why do we so consistently hear so VERY LITTLE about this?

The Trans-Texas Corridor (supposedly) will be the first leg to be constructed.

This SuperCorridor should be massive when finished, including both mega-highways and multi-rails.

There will be Inland Ports, one in KC.

Go for it, JWink. The arena is an exorbitantly expensive project that many feel was misrepresented.

It’s the citizens’ money, and as such, they need to have a say in how it’s spent.

If EVER there was a need for a re-vote – this is it.

“The most frequently asked questions about school choice are: Do public schools respond constructively to competition induced by school choice, by raising their own productivity? Does students’ achievement rise when they attend voucher or charter schools? Do voucher and charter schools end up with a selection of the better students (“cream-skim”)? I review the evidence on these questions from the United States, relying primarily on recent policy experiments. Public schools do respond constructively to competition, by raising their achievement and productivity. The best studies on this question examine the introduction of choice programs that have been sufficiently large and long-lived to produce competition. Students’ achievement generally does rise when they attend voucher or charter schools. The best studies on this question use, as a control group, students who are randomized out of choice programs. Not only do currently enacted voucher and charter school programs not cream-skim; they disproportionately attract students who were performing badly in their regular public schools. This confirms what theory predicts: there are no general results on the sorting consequences of school choice. The sorting consequences of a school choice plan depend strongly on its design.”

Joe, I have relatives in Texas. They own a large ranch that has been in their family since before the civil war.The plans are to run the thing right through the middle of their property. I know that they try to fight this, but it seems to be going forward, quietly. They don’t want it in the MSM, because they are trying to shirk their responsabilities concerning illegals in country already.

KFG~ here’s the gay note to get you started today.I know how much GS likes to discuss everything homosexual on a daily basis, so here’s a starting point.GS~you’re welcome.

March 9, 2007EditorialWearing the Green, and the PinkEveryone loves a parade. Sadly, the reverse is not always true. Consider the St. Patrick’s Day Parade that makes its way along Fifth Avenue in Manhattan every year, a salute to all things and all people Irish — except those who wish to wear any symbol declaring they are gay or lesbian.

For the second year in a row, the parade will be missing the city’s most powerful Irish-American politician: Christine Quinn, the speaker of the City Council, who is a lesbian. Ms. Quinn boycotted last year’s parade after failing to persuade organizers to allow gay groups to march. Several compromises were rejected, including allowing gay marchers to wear pink triangles or rainbow sashes, symbols that would be more subtle than carrying a banner.

John Dunleavy, a leader of the Roman Catholic group behind the parade, the Ancient Order of Hibernians, last year compared the exclusion of gays to barring the Ku Klux Klan from marching in Harlem, or Nazis from joining an Israeli parade. The insult did more than just put a damper on the festivities — it also damaged the inclusive image of the city and the day.

Rather than fighting the organizers again, Ms. Quinn has found a way to show them up in style and in the motherland. She accepted an invitation to march in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Dublin. The speaker says she will wear an apple pin in homage to her home city, a pin with American and Irish flags, and a sticker with a pink triangle and a shamrock, a symbol of gay and ethnic pride.

With a nod to religious belief, the courts have ruled that parade organizers can legally exclude gay marchers. But they do that at their own peril. The joy of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade is that for one day, every New Yorker can feel proudly Irish. So much for that. The absence of Christine Quinn should haunt the whole length of Fifth Avenue.

Farmie – the interesting thing about you is that for a person involved in a civil action based upon the need to establish credibility in accusing an entity of discrimination via homophobic practices, you don’t seem to care much that you damage that credibility by accusing others who have declared they are not homophobic of being such.

It kind of makes you look like a delusionally-paranoid individual that views everyone who disagrees with you as a homophobe – even folks who have clearly stated, and can back up their claims not to be.

Just a guess, but I would think those on the other side of the suit might one day be scouring places such as this – and would be ecstatic to find this kind of behavior since it demonstrates your need to label others on a regular basis, with little, or no evidence.

    Just a thought, SS.

    I was lied to!

I was told IF I didn’t vote for the arena I was voting to have my property taxes raised.

I was told there would be parking built — this wasn’t a maybe, it was a for sure.

The arena now being planned for is nothing like the arena that passed NARROWLY (not by a respectable margin as you state).

We the voters and citizens of Wichita whose money is being spent (along with others who didn’t even get a vote!) deserve to be heard, deserve leaders who tell the truth and deserve to revote this issue.

    Welcome To The Post-Factual Era

The Golden Era, the Depression Era, and the Cold War Era will surely pale in historical comparison to what David Sirota is calling our Post-Factual Era.

The Establishment is reflexively pro-war, and – for obvious reasons of profit making – innately supportive of “free” trade deals that are chock full of corporate protections (patents, copyrights, intellectual property restrictions) but stripped of basic protections for human beings (wages, labor standards, human rights, environmental regulations, etc.).

But still, there is something troubling when these innate biases consume the entire debate and those who have been so utterly and completely right are utterly and completely berated as illegitimate. It speaks to a political discourse where the “reality-based community” is totally replaced by what I would call the “post-factual” era – a period in time where the dialogue does not even pretend to be based on any actual evidence or concrete information and where the most factually wrong are paraded around as the most right. And just a quick look at the chaos in Iraq or the economic havoc being wreaked here at home shows that this “post-factualism” does not bode well for anyone other than the handful of elites at the top.

Tony – while I agree that the ‘transportation’ aspect would be great, I’m not sure about re-routing major shipping from Canada to Old Mexico without first having solved our illegal immigrant issues.

And I’m not so sure about the Inland Port scenario. That seems to be another security issue.

I think we have to remember this project was begun in the early 90’s and since 9-11 our needs have changed, security-wise.

My question would be to the citizens living in areas right now that depend upon shipping routes to survive, how would those communities fare if their commerce trade were greatly reduced?

The problem with the downtown arena is two-fold:

    1. Parking. The problem has not been fully addressed and will not be until after the arena is built. It encompasses the “build it and we will kinda-maybe create a place for you to park. Kind of what we have now downtown.

    2. Legacy. The powers that be, that basically lied to the public about expenses, want nothing more than a legacy. This arena is NOT going to be the end all for downtown redevelopement, as the current crop of council members seem to think it will be.

Jwink is correct in that the Kansas Coliseum can support anything Wichita can throw at it. With a 10th of the cost of the arena, it could be a class place for many venues.

    What next . . . a water park? Oh, wait . . . never mind.

Infrastructure and public projects ranging from size in both scope and amount have never been without skeptics and detractors, but infrastructure and public projects have always had their supporters and for the most part, these projects and its supporters have always been extremely beneficial to the community.

The Downtown Arena public project is a controversial one to many people, no doubt. But the County needed to make a decision on what to do with the Kansas Coliseum. With a series of lawsuits on compliance with the Americans Disability Act looming, an expensive upgrade was going to be forced on the aging Coliseum.

Looking at a over $100 million dollars on property taxes and waste spent on interest on 20-year bonds to renovate the 11,000 seat coliseum, an idea was brought up to replace it with a brand new 15,000 seat for our growing metropolis.

The idea was to enact a 1% sales tax for 30 months to build a brand new arena in Downtown Wichita. This is a very affordable measure for our community. No money wasted on paying interest on bonds and the tax is fairly distributed and portions paid for by visitors.

During a record voter turnout of a Presidential General Election year in 2004, with a turnout of over 170,000 people, the majority of voters approved the temporary 1% tax and the Downtown Arena became reality.

There are a few issues to deal with that remains without criticism such as parking, property buyouts, traffic and rising cost of construction materials. But all of these issues are being dealt with and made public for discussion.

While public projects are always bumpy and tend to be over promised on results, the Downtown Arena is going to be great facility for our community and be within cost factors and all reasonable concerns addressed and solved. Love it! Hate it! Don’t Care! That is up to you.

But we were not lied to. The only thing is there are a few issues with the Downtown Arena yet to be addressed. I don’t think we were sold a bill of goods, we just had some unknowns, but it should have been better planned and more developed before coming to the voters. I thought it was premature without a plan of what or where it was going to be, but I understand that the ballot question was done at a time to give it the greatest number of register voters the chance to vote on the question, which is a Presidential General Election year and the next chance would be four years down the road. They figured that we can have it collected and paid for by the time another high voter turnout would come around, which is 2008. It would be based on vision and the progessive people of our community saw that vision.

Will it be a money pit and a white elephant? Well is the Kansas Colisuem considered one? Because the Downtown Arena is going to replace the Colisuem.

Whatever your reasons or motivation for being against a downtown arena is on you. Nothing wrong with being critical and being against it.

But it’s going to be bought and paid for by the end of this year. The wish for an Arena Aborition is a little bit too late. That’s reality. It might suck for you, but it what it is.

Post factual. Deny ’till you die.

There are over 1000 rights denied to gays and lesbians. I guess if each right denied weighted a pound, it would only be HALF a ton!

Fleetie could look it up himself on the HRC website, and I’ve posted it here before.

But you know the relationship fleetie has with facts. As evidence, he is a legend in his own mind.

Well, farmie – good luck on your suit. And really, I’m just trying to give you some good old sister-to-sister advice. I’d hate to see you ruin your odds by publishing material detrimental to your case.

I’m a little surprised your attorney hasn’t advised you to keep comments that could be held against you – to yourself.

And at $300 an hour, you might have been better off hiring a local attorney so you wouldn’t be charged the commute time for filings, etc. Unless, your guy is taking this on a contigency, and in that case, I think he would be livid that your posts might be undermining your case.

Sisterly advice. That’s all it is. I’m starting to really like you – you’re kind of growing on me.

The problem isn’t that CF doesn’t UNDERSTAND what you say. Rather, it’s that he doesn’t AGREE with you.

I can’t quite figure out all her references to lesbianism – maybe she IS a dykeSnipShe’s really not that bright.Posted by: GSheridan | February 15, 2007 at 12:02 PM

AND when Wendy takes her to task:

“And by the way, GS, two little points for you – 1) KFG has made it rather clear MANY times that, yes, she is a lesbian and 2) use of a term like “dyke” is morally offensive to me, and do it again and I will be happy to report you for it!!”

    GS respons with this:

Ok – so I get it – Farmie’s a lesbo. Big deal. Perhaps that explains her constant rabid anger towards everyone who doesn’t agree with her – but it doesn’t mean she is due any special treatment. She isn’t.snipMaybe she feels “oppressed,” by the lack of approval from society, and lashes out. I couldn’t care less.I don’t dislike her because she is a lesbian. She can quit wallowing in her victim mentality anytime she chooses. For some reason she seems to define herself by her sexuality – you don’t hear the rest of us going around making jokes that “we’re straight.”The only lesbians I know are not nearly as nasty. I’ll bet they would be ashamed to call her – one of their own.

    Wendy’s reply?

And, GS, I am still finding the “lesbo” references offensive. We prefer not to resort to deragatory name calling here (or at least I do) so, if you want to make reference to her sexuality, call her a lesbian… otherwise, the gloves are off, and you really don’t want to hear the names i can think of for you… And small wonder that she identifies herself by her sexuality – when people like you keep shoving it in her face…Posted by: Wendy | February 15, 2007 at 03:17 PM

KSagnostic – no, I didn’t know her sexual preference – but she kept making lesbian comment, after lesbian comment. After we were all informed that she was, indeed, a lesbo – it became obvious she defines herself that way.Idiot.Posted by: GSheridan | February 15, 2007 at 03:12 PM

Wendy Replies to the term dyke:

    GS’s thoughtful reply to Wendy:

Jesus Christ on a Corndog, Windy – you seem to find all kinds of words offensive.I’m not the one who kept posting about lesbians – over and over and over – she did. Thread after thread.Until you ‘outed’ her – I wasn’t sure if she was one. Just thought she had a hangup about lesbo’s.snipPosted by: GSheridan | February 15, 2007 at 03:25 PM

    Here, I have an idea…

    It’s crazy, I know….

    And quite possibly IMPOSSIBLE…

    But let’s give it a shot anyways…

How many of you have been to a kindergarten classroom recently? One of the activities that is becoming increasingly popular is a “friendship circle” (many other names as well) the idea behind this concept is that if we teach children at an early age to identify the positives in each other, rather than the negatives, we can begin to eliminate discriminatory attitudes…. Now since we are all adults here (at least, i am assuming, which may be a leap, but I am going for it today) Why don’t we see what we can come up with? Each person should post a SINCERE complement about another blogger… If you can’t be SINCERE, then don’t post anything at all – the goal would be to try to find something SINCERELY nice to say about someone that you otherwise would not have something nice to say about….

So let’s see who the real adults are here…

Joe, I hope you are correct. But, I still say the proposal was misrepresented. I was told there would be parking facilities built. I was tole there would be a $23,611,000 reserve for operating losses. Those have evaporated in the face of a 35% increase in acquisition/construction costs. In fact, as they finally admit the need for roads that escalation in costs will only get worse.

Question: Since the reserve has bee eliminated how will we pay the operating deficits? Suggestion: establish a benefit district and tax it.

Suggestion to you: push something like your idea of transportation – at least for that ‘inner loop’ we talked about. Seneca-Washington-Kellogg-Central. What is that, about four square miles? Might be a way to address the parking issue.

    RepubiKKKahn,

I call bullshit on #5 above. When I’m wrong, I regularly concede the point.

Here, for example, is me being wrong in a debate with Heckler, and conceding that he’s right and I’m wrong.

    “Heckler,

You are right and I am wrong. After consulting with a professor of Political Science at WSU, it is indeed the case that Clinton’s wholesale firing of all 93 U.S. Attorneys was unprecedented.”

    http://blogs.kansas.com/weblog/2007/03/why_were_us_att.html#comments

And yesterday, if you’d said that you didn’t post under the names JM and Eier, I said that I’d admit that I’m wrong as well.

Go back through the last 2 1/2 years. I’ve admitted to being wrong a number of times, even when I didn’t want to concede the point.

You can hate CF. That’s your right. He doesn’t care if you do. But you don’t have the right to make shit up, RepubiKKKan, and to LIE about what I have and haven’t said here.

    Wendy,

I like your suggestion! Last time I was in a kindergarten classroom was for Grandparent’s Day and there was a specific agenda…

My family (I’m the oldest of 7 children) has used a similar idea for as far back as memory serves. We call it “Trade Last.” It means I tell my sister (the one who got out of her turn to do dishes and I’m not feeling really charitable towards) that I have a Trade Last. She knows that means I heard something really nice about her from someone and she can hear that compliment as soon as she has one about me to share. It might take days for her to hear something (we also limit to something sincere and genuine) but she listens so she can get hers. We are all over 50 today and as close as close can be and are siblings who still look for Trade Lasts.

I want to follow your excellent suggestion so I’m going to give it some thought. I want it to be sincere and directed towards someone I don’t already agree with and respect and find it easy to compliment.

Today, there are many scholars, theologians, and popular writers who promote the Gnostic perspective as a liberating antidote to close-minded dogmatism, but there are also many others who denounce it as a pernicious and destructive influence. Name many of the issues that fuel our cultural politics today-authority vs. individual freedom, fixed moral precepts vs. moral relativism, religion vs. spirituality-and you can find usable precedents in that long-distant conflict between Gnostic Christians and their orthodox foes. Emory University biblical scholar Luke Timothy Johnson may be right in saying that a new Gnosticism once again “threatens the shape of Christian faith.” But the return of Gnostic ideas has also contributed to a larger debate between progressives and traditionalists that goes beyond the strict concerns of one religious tradition.

I actually read some real news before coming to the blog today and was encouraged by what I read. The economy is in great shape and growing. Unemployment is down to 4.5%.

“Economists said Thursday’s report suggest households’ finances are holding up fairly well to any strains caused by the troubled housing market and well as some sluggishness in overall economic growth. Analysts said that’s because the jobs climate remains in good shape and income growth has picked up.”

I also picked up on the super highway thread. Many trucker have commented on this. When traveling at night I frequently turn on talk radio to stay awake and they are always complaining because already Mexican trucks are being allowed to cross the border to move cargo to Canada. They are concerned because many of the expensive restrictions placed on them aren’t on the Mexicans. They don’t have to show proof of insurance, no emissionion controls on their older trucks, etc.. If they travel by night they bypass the weigh stations. They are able to underbid American truckers because there is little or no overhead. This snake has many heads which I bet we hear about in the future AFTER it is to late to do much about it.

Is anybody interested in what’s happening in the real world? Or would you rather snipe and bicker like 4-year-olds?

Chew on this one for a while:

Justice Dept.: FBI misused Patriot Act(posting only the really interesting tidbits in the article. Link below)

WASHINGTON – The FBI improperly and, in some cases, illegally used the USA Patriot Act to secretly obtain personal information about people in the United States, a Justice Department audit concluded Friday.

And for three years the FBI has underreported to Congress how often it forced businesses to turn over the customer data, the audit found.

FBI agents sometimes demanded the data without proper authorization, according to the 126-page audit by Justice Department Inspector General Glenn A. Fine. At other times, the audit found, the FBI improperly obtained telephone records in non-emergency circumstances.(snip)At issue are the security letters, a power outlined in the Patriot Act that the Bush administration pushed through Congress after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks. The letters, or administrative subpoenas, are used in suspected terrorism and espionage cases. They allow the FBI to require telephone companies, Internet service providers, banks, credit bureaus and other businesses to produce highly personal records about their customers or subscribers — without a judge’s approval.(snip)The audit released Friday found that the number of national security letters issued by the FBI skyrocketed in the years after the Patriot Act became law.

In 2000, for example, the FBI issued an estimated 8,500 letters. By 2003, however, that number jumped to 39,000. It rose again the next year, to about 56,000 letters in 2004, and dropped to approximately 47,000 in 2005.

Over the entire three-year period, the audit found the FBI issued 143,074 national security letters requesting customer data from businesses.

The FBI vastly underreported the numbers. In 2005, the FBI told Congress that its agents in 2003 and 2004 had delivered only 9,254 national security letters seeking e-mail, telephone or financial information on 3,501 U.S. citizens and legal residents over the previous two years.

Additionally, the audit found, the FBI identified 26 possible violations in its use of the national security letters, including failing to get proper authorization, making improper requests under the law and unauthorized collection of telephone or Internet e-mail records.

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070309/ap_on_go_ca_st_pe/national_security_letters

    *****

So is it okay now for everybody to allow the FBI and any other entity free reign?

“Fine’s annual review is required by Congress, over the objections of the Bush administration.”

Wendy I think that what SOB is saying in his non-diplocatic way is that most people feel they have the right to express their own opinions. Just because it isn’t the most popular opinion on this blog doesn’t make it wrong – just different.

Your earlier post about your son’s kindergarten class is a form of the social engineering I feel happens much to often in our schools. When we are tolerant of everything we encourage abhorrent behavior. Everyone’s behavior isn’t alright. Kids need to learn this early on and preferrable in their home environment. Maybe if more emphasis was placed on skills such as reading, math, etc… We wouldn’t have so many school dropouts that have been trained in social skills they forget as soon as they run into the real world.

Just my thoughts on the subject.

Rd you make a good point. I’ll try to temper my emails from now on. When I call my mom I will talk in garbled tones so it can’t be recorded. Of course at 92 her hearing is a little bad and she probably wouldnt understand either.

Seriously this is a problem and goes back to the adage that power corrupts absolutely.

Politicians have always taken advantage of the files they are in control of. I don’t want to bring up history here but you can go back and find where this has happened in every administration when things as serious as national security were not involved.

What we need is a truly non-partisan agency to oversee these types of things so we as a nation can be secure and still not trample on the privacy rights of citizens.

Now the problem, where in Washington do we find a non-partisan agency?

  161. CF
    Posted March 9, 2007 at 11:56 am | Permalink

    ksgrm,

Indeed. What you describe sounds like a Civil Service. Americans have DC-phobia, for admittedly good reasons. Still, the fact that our Civil Service is relatively weak when compared to, say, Britain’s, makes nonpartisan analysis and policy generation more difficult to come by in America than elsewhere. And this problem is exacerbated when it is intelligence and security that are at issue.

  162. GSheridan
    Posted March 9, 2007 at 11:56 am | Permalink

RD – there are some issues that I dont’ think are clear-cut here.

No, the FBI should not be able to operate Carte Blanc with our lives, but on the other hand – are telephone records covered in any privacy act? Not conversations – telephone records, themselves?

I’m not too afraid of the Patriot Acts – it seems to me that our liberties are MUCH more threatened at local levels, by various gung-ho officials than they are on a Federal level.

You’re telling us about emails, records, letters, etc., but you’re not telling us how ACTUAL CITIZENS are being arrested and losing their freedoms over this.

Meanwhile, at local levels, we have cops not taking women to hospitals when they beg to – and are miscarrying their babies, sheriff’s being convicted of raping 12 year olds, and deputies shooting 31 times at kids on a Joy Ride.

You tell me which is more dangerous to us.

    Truthfully.

These files had every small detail about every power politician in Washington. They were left in the open in an unlocked room. This to me is much more troublesome that the Patriotic Act.

Ksgrm – what concerns me about your viewpoint is that it is radically unrealistic – part of the purpose of the school system IS to help with socialization!!!! You would rather that children NOT be taught to look for the good in someone? This is kindergarten we are talking about here – do you remember what kindergarten was like? I do (and BTW, that was not my son’s class – my son is only 2 – that was a class my niece was in that I helped at for a day as a volunteer) and here is what we learned in kindergarten – I learned to count to 100… I learned the alphabet. I learned shapes and colors. I learned how to match shapes and colors. I learned how to cut out shapes and colors. I learned how to paste a shape onto the same shape. I learned how to write my letters. I learned how to write my name. I learned safety. I learned how to tie my shoes. And most of all, I learned how to play with other kids… I happen to think I turned out okay, seeing as how I have an IQ of 136, and a college degree in Sociology and Criminology… Do you really want your five year old to be learning long division? Then keep them home and teach them. But when they have problems interacting with others in society because they never learned necessary social skills, you can give me a call and let me know how you feel about it then… personally, I would MUCH RATHER my son learn how to say something nice about someone… which has become rather obvious from MANY of the posts here today that many people missed… I think it is a sad statement on our society myself…

Hank, I am sorry I forgot about you :) I just hadn’t seen a post from you yet today. I have noticed with your posts that even when you vehemently disagree with someone, it is rare that you degenerate to name calling, and you are for the most part very polite. I respect that. Thank you.

Wendy in no way did I imply that kids shouldn’t learn to play well with others. I am talking about telling them what they have to tolerate. At the danger of being labeled a homophobe I don’t think it is the place of the public school system to teach my 5 year old that it’s ok to have two mommies or two daddies. I also don’t expect them to be taught sex ed at this young age.

By son left Oregon because this was the mandated cirriculum to be taught by the second grade. He moved to Colorado Springs where he found social engineering that started in kindergarten. He paid over $15,000 annually to put his kids in private schools. Not because he didn’t like what they were teaching them but because the cirriculum was liberal arts oriented with no emphasis on technology or computer science – just a lot of instruction of how to communicate with others.

That’s a terrific IQ you have, my son who is now home schooling his kids in Idaho because his company transfered him there has an IQ of 153. He will soon be transferring to Manassa, Virginia where he will be looking at streamling a computer chip manufacturer into a more profitable position. Home schooling for them is ideal. They will get a first hand look at history and government in action because it is only 45 minutes from DC.

He is a product of public shools. Even with all the social engineering in our schools today, what are we turning out? There were no school shootings in his day, no one assaulted the teachers, I felt he was safe when he went to school. Yesterday Campus High here in Wichita has more than 90% of their students afraid to come to school because of death threats.

Wendy something in our public schools is all messed up and it seems to be getting worse. I say again teachers need to go back to teaching and parents need to step up and parent. Good for you in doing this.

USS Cole facts, not Republican (read Grannie and Khan) spin:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Cole_bombing

This included the “preliminary judgment” that al Qaeda was responsible, with the caveat that no evidence had yet been found that Bin Ladin himself ordered the attack… in March 2001, the CIA’s briefing slides for Rice were still describing the CIA’s “preliminary judgment” that a “strong circumstantial case” could be made against al Qaeda but noting that the CIA continued to lack “conclusive information on external command and control” of the attack.

Not exactly Bill Clintons fault, eh?

The CIA took out Abu Ali al-Harithi in November 2002.

    Why the wait?

Clinton was only in office for three months after the Cole attack. Bush had been in office for TWENTY-TWO months when the CIA responded.

So why give a pass to Bush when he waited almost TWO YEARS?

But it’s okay to teach them that they SHOULDN’T have two mommies or two daddies? Is that what you are saying? My argument to you would indeed be that type of teaching is the job of the parents, NOT the teachers – the point of the freaking exercise, which pretty much EVERYONE seems to have missed, is to find ONE NICE THING to say about someone… It has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with whether or not homosexuality is okay, or whether or not being a different race is okay – that is beside the point and you are clouding the issue. The challenge I presented was that everyone here should find ONE NICE THING (SINCERE) to say about a fellow blogger – if there is something wrong with us teaching our 5 year olds to find something nice to say about someone, then perhaps I should take my son somewhere else, where that kind of mentality would be appreciated… After all, it is our individuality that makes us strong – so why would we not want to teach our children that as well?

Ksgrannie: I couldn’t agree with you more about teachers teaching and parents parenting. I had serious doubts about home schooling, because of the lack of social interaction. That was 35 or 40 years ago when it was a unique concept. Today, I see young people, home schooled all the way to college, having succeeded in the college environment, and now out in the “real” world doing wonderfully, and I realize I was obviously wrong. Had I known then what I know now, would I have home schooled my children? I doubt it, because I’m not sure that I would have had the discipline to do it right. But, I digress.

The point is teachers, for the most part, are doing the best they can in bad situations. Many parents are too busy, too career-oriented, too selfish, too willing to think that satellite, cable television and video games can raise their children to be parents. My children’s mother lost her life when the younger was two years old.

Was that an ideal life they led? Not by a long shot. Would I do a million things differently if I could have a ‘mulligan”? Damned right. We did the best we could. One, however, lost her life several years ago, at the height of a brilliant medical career. The other is a YUPPIE, who dropped out of high school at 15, took the GED the next day, received a high school diploma because of her score on the GED, spoke to many high school audiences that if they thought they were being crushed down by the system and they were smart enough to do it, they didn’t have to put up with it and could move on to college right now, etc.

I remember vividly the day the vice-principal called me and told me she was in his office and why she was there. I was speechless when I arrived, saw, while classes were going on, the groups of “students” congregated in the halls around the soft drink machines, hearing nothing but pandemonium from the classrooms — and then, when she presented her case, the vice-principal, in all sincerity, looked at me sadly and said, “And, she’s right. She doesn’t need to be here, trying to learn in a madhouse.”

Our teachers, God bless them, can’t teach, when their primary objective is to keep gunfire from breaking out.

RM After listening to my sister-in-law who has been teaching 9-12 for 32 years I know what you are talking about. She taught the first five at North high school here in Wichita but became afraid for her safety when guns were found in the school. She now teaches in a small town outside Wichita and doesn’t have the violence threat but does have parents that are amazed when their little darlings are failing eventhough she has sent them numerous notes.

Wendy I certainly didn’t mean to offend. I believe I actually complimented you at one point.

This is the kind of discourse that runs rampant on this blog. Someone says something, someone else comments on it and the war is on.

Sorry if I stepped on your nerve. My sons are grown and I have grandkids from a soph. in college down to the first grade. I am concerned about the level of education 5 of them are receiving in public schools. Three are homeschooled and even though it is a sacrifice for their parents it has been worth it. Their mother was able to quit her job and stay at home full time when they were no longing paying the private school tuition.

Public schools are in most instances a good source of knowledge but time constraints keep teachers from instructing in the three Rs when so many other things are added to their agenda.

My point is that we need to give kids the opportunity to learn from a teacher with the freedom to teach. If children are raised right in the home they don’t have to be taught to treat others nicely, it just comes naturally.

By the way I am amused by your use of the word ‘freaking’ – we have been trying to break our 15 yr old grandaughter of that because she slipped once in front of us and used the other vowel in there like they do at school. She was a little embarrassed. Please don’t take offence – I really was amused.

More for Fleetwood’s “Dems have no guts” meme:

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20070308/pl_nm/congress_bush_secrecy_dc_1

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – A House panel on Thursday voted to overturn a 2001 order by President George W. Bush that enables former presidents, including Bush’s father, to keep some of their papers secret indefinitely.

The bipartisan bill, hailed by historians, was passed without objection on a voice vote by the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. The full House of Representatives is expected to vote on it next week.

“It will ensure that future historians have access to presidential records as the Presidential Records Act intended,” said committee Chairman Henry Waxman (news, bio, voting record), a California Democrat who is one of the bill’s sponsors.

In November 2001, Bush issued the order, widely criticized by historians, that allowed either the White House or a former president to block the release of a former president’s papers and put the onus on researchers to show a “specific need” for many types of records.

    *****

Notice that the RepubliCONs voted as a bloc to keep papers secret.

They’ve got a lot to hide, no doubt about it.

I went to a basketball tourney one year recruiting ring stewarts and I was amazed at the organization! Teams from all over the state were participating and it was just one of many events that the home schoolers can participate in.

I don’t think you have to worry about socialization, I think they rival the public schools in events that bring them all together!

Democraps just stuff classified documents down their pants and walk out the door to keep secrets from getting out. Not that they couldn’t have used the twelve copiers available in the area to make a copy if they wanted one. They had to steal the papers so they would not be caught in a lie about events leading up to 911.

Hank that is so right. It’s a whole new world out there and they don’t have to wait for field days when the whole school goes – they can get some other home schoolers and have a day out when the parents decide that is relevant.

A side note to this is my great niece lives in Springfield, MO. She has been taking violin lessons since she was four. She is now six and has played at Branson in several shows. She is now being taught by one of the professionals from Branson. She is home schooled and has the freedom to do this. She consistently tests 3 years ahead of her grade level.

It’s true that Sandy Berger was convicted of a misdemeanor for tampering with documents, but if he was trying to destroy evidence, he did not succeed:

“Noel Hillman, chief of the Justice Department’s public integrity section, would not discuss Berger’s motivation, but said the former national security adviser understood the rules governing the handling of classified materials. Berger only had copies of documents; all of the originals remain in the government’s possession, Hillman said.”

    Read carefully Heevie,

The President of the United States can’t do each and every job there is to do in the government. That’s why there are specialists to do jobs such as investigating, tracking down, capturing or killing terrorists.

This takes time and lots of coordination.

Clinton ignored the problem, under the Bush administration, the job was completed, Bin Laden’s brother-in-law was taken out.

I wouldn’t put them all in a pressure cooker. I’d do the corned beef in a crock pot and then cook the cabbage on the stove with some of the corned beef juice in the pot.

The corned beef is really good in a crock pot, but the cabage doesn’t need to be cooked as long.

I cook the corned beef in the crock pot, then I take some of the juice and boil new potatoes. When the taters are almost fork tender I quarter a head of cabbage and put it in with the taters.

I then make a mustard sauce by making a basic white sauce and putting a bunch of mustard powder in it.

    Yum yum!

If you insist on the pressure cooker, I wouldn’t put the cabbage in with it, maybe the taters.

You claim retirement at the age of 54 and I think I’ve seen you write about that you retired several years before that. No one retires that young and quits working unless they are independently wealth. Partial retirements don’t pay squat. My father was forced to retire due to layoffs at age 59 and he took a huge cut in monthly retirement, about half of his projected retirement at age 65.

I don’t have any mixed blood. I’m about as white as you can get without glowing in the dark. Nordic ancestry I think, not sure, then name has changed spelling with each generation.

Anyone else see this in the paper today?:*****Support education

On the Web site of the Kansas Libertarian Party, you will find the following quote in the Libertarian platform: “Our long-term goal is the complete separation of school and state.”

The platform also says that education should be either through home schooling or private schools. Further, you will find the Web site lists Karl Peterjohn as a Libertarian Party candidate for the at-large position on the USD 259 school board.

Now why would a candidate of a party whose goal is to do away with public schools want to serve on a public school board? It would appear that such a person’s reason for wanting to serve on a public school board is to weaken public education from within.

I agree with Thomas Jefferson that public education is the cornerstone of democracy. To weaken public education is to weaken democracy. If you believe in public education, Kevass Harding is the obvious candidate for whom to vote.

    CHARLES W. MERRIFIELDWichita*****

I did not know:1) That Peterjohn was a Libertarian, nor2) That it was an official plank that the Libertarians want to close down public schools.

I know that Proudman has more or less advocated that, but I believed it came from his idiopathic politics and not from a party position.

Interesting, huh? It does seem to suggest who is the more reasonable candidate.

    Also, see Crowson’s cartoon:

    http://www.kansas.com/mld/kansas/news/editorial/cartoons/

  298. Posted March 9, 2007 at 5:04 pm | Permalink

Wendy I think you got your first taste as to why these social experiment games don’t work.

The only behavior that changes are the ones you are able to observe. As soon as they leave the classroom the real character pops out.

Real character is learned and not trained. If the basis isn’t there to build on you have only changed their immediate behavior.

Like you I started with a major in Abnormal Psycology and realized a year in that I couldn’t make much money in that field and emotionally it was very draining. Thats when I entered the world of accounting.

I have enough knowledge to know that some people will never change because they have absolutely no reason to.

My point, not necessarily disagreement, is that don’t you want a good education for children such as this, who have parents with so much inertia that so definitely needs to be overcome?

I know I do. Our future depends upon it.

My kids go to public schools and get a lot from it. I wish all kids got what my kids do. I have to help them along with some swift kicks in the butt to get them to overcome their own inertia, from time to time, however.

    What’s up with that?

You SAID no one was asking you to leave – so I thought I’d make you feel included and do the honors.

    …sheesh…try to do a guy a favor….

Besides that – you ARE a little bit icky.

But, being the magnanimous person I am – I’m going to do something for you now. No..no…you don’t have to thank me…no…not even flowers, although I AM partial to blue hydrangeas….

Here is it, bud, learn it and your life will change.

Quit separating yourself from those who have things you don’t have. Quit looking at the rich, the wealthy, the beautiful, as folks who are different from you – and quit thinking of their possessions as unattainable. There is nothing anyone else has – that you can’t have – unless you create a mental chasm between yourself and the objects of your desire.

You are, right now, the sum of all the choices you’ve made in your life. But the picture you are today can easily change as you make more choices that will lead to other futures.

IF you don’t like where you are today – choose again. It’s really that simple.

But now I’m done being nicey-nice.

Get the Hell out of my face. And get the Hell off my board.

The lambs are little brown and black katahden crosses, hair sheep. Cute as hell! After they are weaned we’ll get rid of the little boy lambs and maybe the six older ewes.

Well, I’m headed to the Hot Tub for an hour of steamy water.

But I’m going to bless you guys with a pretty cool poem to dwell upon.

[poem] Abu Ben Adam by James Leigh Hunt

Abu Ben Adam, may his tribe increase Awoke one night from a deep dream of peace

And saw, within the moonlight of his room making it rich, like a lily in bloom, an angel writing in a book of gold.

Exceeding peace had made Abu Ben Adam bold, and to the presence in his room he said

    ‘ What writest thou?’

The vision raised its head and with a look of all sweet accord, answered:’The names of those who love the Lord.

‘And is mine one?’ asked Abu.

‘Nay not so’ Replied the Angel

Abu spoke more low but cheerily still and said, ‘I pray thee then write me down as one that loves his fellow-men.’ The angel wrote and vanished.

The next night it came again with awaking light, and showed the names of whom love of God had blessed…….And lo! Ben Adam’s name led all the rest. [end poem]

Speaking of lamb again, LaMondes on West Street has the best leg of lamb I’ve got in Wichita. I’ve had it there several times, been over a year though, and I’ve never had a bad one.

The guy that owns it is from Iran and a pretty serious practicing Muslim, so you’re not going to find a bacon wrapped pork chop on the menu like Gerrards in Goddard, but his lamb is to die for.

I am aware she is not present. But she will be back. So I don’t feel bad for hitting at someone not “present”.

    GSheridan.

Thanks no on the try to make nice with me. You did that once before by patronizing me while simultaneously insulting a friend.Just now I think you are drinking but that’s just an observation.

I don’t need nice or advice from such as you. You are not a nice person. You’re barely even a respectable person. One wonders which way that will change.

You are aware that farmgrrl is running her restaurant tonight. That is why you are here to attack her when she is not about. In fact she will likely never even see the attack thread you tried to start here. You often engage in this sort of blind shot on other posters. You’ve done it to me, Tracy and others. But you seem to have an affinity for farmgrrl. She is MORE than capable of fighting her own battles. Why not engage her when she is likely to be about?

Now this is an open thread. SO it doesn’t matter so much. But you engage in the same sort of thing all over the place. That’s petty. It diminishes you as a poster should you ever have anything truly worthy to add. It’s also distracting.

Again? Farmgrrl is my friend. No one has ever busted her in a lie or major distortion. This is something you cannot say. You should emulate her not attack her. You don’t like her or her lifestyle, hate it even, fine. I’m sure she is more than used to it. But engage her on substance not ad hominem. You will find that if you treat her unfairly, you will answer for it. And not just from me. There is a REASON why farmgrrl has friends here. YOU could learn from it.

PS Hank I will make sure Farmgrrl knows what you said here. For her, I thank you.

Well, Dave, just who the Hell cares what you think about anything?

    Let’s see…..

You claimed to be a physically fit Adonis that women chased after. You said that you were a happily married man with three children and a trophy wife.

It turned out that you attended a WE Blog meet rather than take your “wife” out to dinner on your fifteenth annivesary.

It turned out that you were a fat, ugly man with horrid breath and no social skills.

And you want us to believe the rest of your “stories?”

    Loser.

And you have the gall to challenge me on ANYTHING?

You have zip credibility, Dave. No one believes your stories. No one believes that you are a hot shot business man. For that matter, Dave, no one believes your stories about your little happy family or your fifteen year marriage.

For Christ’s sake, Dave, FLEETWOOD has more credibility than you do. Ian Santiago is viewed in a more favorable light than you are.

You are just a fat little man, Dave, playing with the big boys and wanting to be a player.

And you make fun of me?

God, I feel so damned sorry for you.

My pappy and his pappy before him never allowed tollhouse cookies in the neighborhood. They always said that Chocolate and Peanut Butter could never mix. It was the will of God, they said, and who am I to question their beliefs?

I lost my brother to Tollhouse Cookies. He was just eighteen, proud and brave and a Tollhouse put him in his grave, I swear by the mud below my feet, you can’t raise a Peanut Lover back up when he’s in defeat.

Then, to top it off – while you are in the midst of a suit, YOU publicly state that YOU are engaging in ILLEGAL employer practices by paying workers under the table. YOU use the filthiest sexual innuendo towards others, but the clincher – the real clincher, is that YOU are once again declaring others to be homophobes, just like the basis of your current case, even though those folks can ESTABLISH that they are not.

Does anyone see a pattern here?

    ksfarmgrrl,

Why is everyone that has an opposing opinion of yours is a homophobe?

I find homosexuality repulsively selfish and also ridiculous that humans would involve themselves in a lifestyle that is neither biologically motivated or proved to be biologically motivated.

In other words, it is pure sexual deviant behavior on a ridiculous order. It serves no purpose other than self pleasure.

Simply put, lack of moral and responsible discipline.

You’re a stupid girl. A very stupid (and silly) girl.

Khan – it’s a pattern of hers. She is in a lawsuit claiming her former employers fired her because she testified against the marriage amendment. However, her employers really just dissolved the entire branch where she worked. She’s suing them, however.

She has exhibited the IDENTICAL pattern of lies and accusations here on this board.

I’m really hoping someone with integrity will notify the opposing side of the lawsuit that she is up to her old tricks again.

Any judge or jury will easily be able to determine from her repetitive behavior here that she his prone to false accusations.

I think it is our civic duty to inform those she is targetting.

After all – I can PROVE that I’m not a homophobe, and I’ve told her that repeatedly, yet she continues to beat that drum.

Makes me think her lawsuit must be on similar lines.

No, that’s what you said not me.

Sex is biological driven by hormones. One of the purposes of sex is to procreate. Yes, we all have sexual desires.

However, homosexuality falls in the category of deviant behavior as homosexuals are looking to satisfy their desires with the same sex.

Their behavior is purely for selfish interests and the behavior as you can see has extrapolated itself into a huge moral and political problem for this nation.

All because some individuals can’t keep it in their pants or whatever it is they do.

Policy based on the promotion sexual desire is definitely wrong and immoral.

This is juvenile this ‘if you’re her friend you can’t be mine’ bullshit. I disagree with her opinions on a regular basis and I say so. I’ve disagreed with the liberal position a few times as well. I don’t expect anyone to banish me from their little circle of friends over it.

I have let a lot of things KFG has insinuated against me slide, because I didn’t want to get into it. All in all it doesn’t really matter, I agree with her positions, but I’m sick of the crap.

    Easy.

    1. We’ve been posting under the same nic for a long time. Not just like a week or two in the case of “Khan.”

    2. Our stories stay straight because we’re not having to remember a lot of lies that we told.

    3. Our writing styles are unique and consistent. I agree with just about everything that JR, Tracy and CF write, but none of us sound alike.

“Captain Communist” on the other hand is exactly what JM-Eier-Uncle William used to call me . . .

    4. All of the other three have gone to meetups. So people got to see that they were indeed different people. I have never gone to a meetup, because I’ve met most of the people that I want to meet from the WEBlog already (except FrmGrrl and Tracy).

I’ve met .morg, JR, Steven D., and CF already. I think I’ve already met Doug, if he’s the same Doug of “Maggot Punks” fame.

The chance to meet some other people that I want to meet doesn’t outweigh my aversion to meeting a lot CON SPAWN that I don’t want to meet.

But I’ll probably go to the next one, just so we can discuss how to deal with name-switching lying pukes like you . . .
