You know I’m not a stalker. So does everbody else here. And that is just some more unfounded inuendo too.Shame on you.No an apology will not do it, at this point, maybe earlier before you made your NEVER statement.

What would be the right thing to do, is to admit that you LIED about this. And the lie about having a “source” for that info.

    Admit that you lied,THEN apologize.

Just like a little kid acting out,you need prompted to do the next right thing.

Shit, half the regulars here have my resume’, place of employment, and direct phone number.

Since you seem unable to control your obsessive acts – I’m going to take the first step.

From now on – I will ignore anything you post – on any thread – any topic and for any reason. And you’re wrong about EVERYONE here backing you. PoliticalMom emailed me and apologized for ever telling you who I was on a different board. She told me she had NO idea you would go so far.

This weekend, the public will be able to bid on a flag that has flown over battle zones in Iraq and Afghanistan and a chance to fly in a World War II-era airplane. The fifth annual McConnell charity auction, which benefits McConnell personnel and their families, is scheduled for Saturday.

The theme is “United We Stand.”

“We’re going to unite the military and Wichita community to show we’re working towards the same good,” said Amy Myer, president of the McConnell Officers’ Spouses’ Charitable Association, which is putting on the auction.Myer said the charity auction was moved off the air base to encourage the public to attend. This year it will be held at the Terradyne Country Club.

Ken – thanks for the info on the flag. I would LOVE to be able to take my elderly father to that. He is a WWII vet, a tank Sergeant. He’s also an ex-pilot, but he didn’t fly in the War. He would LOVE that ride – and the flag.

I’m going to see if I can pull some strings and take him. He’s now disabled so it’s hard to arrange these kinds of outings but it would mean so much.

Do you have the specifics? Times? I can probably track them down, if not.

SSgt David Berry came home last night. The Patriot Guard met his casket at Midcontinent Airport and escorted the hearse and his family to the mortuary in Conway Springs.

We had no police escort, yet many vehicles pulled off the road and waited as we passed.

Ssgt Berry will be laid to rest on Saturday. The sick cult from Topeka is likely to attend, but the Patriot Guard will be there to protect the family and honor the fallen soldier.

“Black parents have good reasons to look elsewhere. Last year, only 28% of black eighth-graders in the Minneapolis public schools passed the state’s basic skills math test; 47% passed the reading test. The black graduation rate hovers around 50%, and the district’s racial achievement gap remains distressingly wide. Louis King, a black leader who served on the Minneapolis School Board from 1996 to 2000, puts it bluntly: “Today, I can’t recommend in good conscience that an African-American family send their children to the Minneapolis public schools. The facts are irrefutable: These schools are not preparing our children to compete in the world.” Mr. King’s advice? “The best way to get attention is not to protest, but to shop somewhere else.”

They can do so because of the state’s longstanding commitment to school choice. … Today, this tradition of choice is providing a ticket out for kids in the gritty, mostly black neighborhoods of north and south-central Minneapolis.

Minneapolis families seeking to escape troubled schools are fortunate to have the options they do. That’s not the case in many other states, where artificial barriers — from enrollment caps to severe underfunding — have stymied the growth of charter schools.

The city’s experience should lead such states to reconsider the benefits of expansive school choice. Conventional wisdom holds that middle-class parents take an interest in their children’s education, while low-income and minority parents lack the drive and savvy necessary. The black exodus here demonstrates that, when the walls are torn down, poor, black parents will do what it takes to find the best schools for their kids.”

Ken – lol, I already called my dad with the news. He’s excited, but worried he can’t get into the plane. He is in a powerchair now and couldn’t stand up if he needed to at all. So, short of a ‘lift’ we may have to sit and watch it take off. And it’s so sad for me, because the man is an encyclopedia – literally – and his damn body has failed him.

But,just seeing the plane, as he put it – would be a blessing for him.

I’ve got to run. Such a busy time for me – but I have family making some calls and we’ll see if we can’t pull off getting him there. Cross your fingers for us.

    Thank you for your info.

Gosh, that was a refreshing respite that congress took from corruption, wasn’t it?

The first thing the new Democratic-controlled congress did in January was to pass long-overdue curbs in lobbyist-paid junkets, jet-travel, tickets to sports events, and such. Speaker Nancy Pelosi declared: This will be “the most ethical congress in history.”

That pledge didn’t even last the month of January, however, as lobbyists and lawmakers quickly found the loophole in the law. While it’s true that influence peddlers can no longer fly a congress critter on a corporate jet to a private party at the Super Bowl – lobbyists can pay $5,000 each into the lawmakers’ political committees to jet them down to the Super Bowl blowout.

So, with the glow of reformitis still on their cheeks, members of congress have been staging all sorts of creative events for lobbyists to pay for and attend, thus continuing the pay-to-schmooze corruption that we were told the new law banned. Let’s see, for $5,000, a lobbyist could hang out at Disney World with Sen. Mel Martinez, or go snowmobiling in Montana with Sen. Max Baucus. Also, Rep. Mary Bono let lobbyists join her at a Who concert for $2,500, or, for the same sum, Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones spent quality time with lobbyists for a “Manicures and Muffins” Morning event at a Washington nail salon.

My favorite is Rep. Eric Cantor. Put $2,500 in his pocket, and you’re entitled to join him for coffee four times this spring at a Capitol Hill Starbucks. Golly Eric, what do you charge for a real breakfast?

Still, the special interests are happy to pay the price – as one puts it, “I have to have some personal contact to be a lobbyist.”

This is Jim Hightower saying… This is why tinkering around the edges of lobbying reform won’t work. To stop the corruption for good, we must have publically-financed elections so congress critters don’t need lobbyists’ cash.

Gramke also noted that he has also been on opposing sides from Duckett over the years, but praises her for keeping to the facts and always doing her homework. “She keeps emotion out of it and sticks to the facts. Cindy, from my perspective, is someone with a tremendous amount of integrity. She always comes with all the facts and figures to back up her position. She’s a pretty big force in education, not only in this city but also in the state.”

Superintendent Brooks shares that respect. “My experience with her has been very good,” he said. “Cindy is someone who keeps public school systems on their toes. She isn’t bashful about challenging us or sharing her own philosophies. She is always extremely respectful. Although I don’t always agree with her, I respect her opinion.”

Cindy Duckett is Kansas’ first cyber-school activist. From the computer in her southwest Wichita home, she serves as a sounding board for school reformers across the state and as a primary research resource for journalists, parents and others interested in educational issues.

In addition, the governor should be talking to such people as new Kansas State Board of Education member Carol Rupe, who has a proven record as a school reformer in Wichita, and Cindy Duckett, one of the most respected education activists in the state.

“The control is in the hands of the direct recipients, and therein lies my disagreement with the attorney general’s opinion about what our stateconstitution declares,” Duckett said.

Duckett is not a Johnny-come-lately to this issue. She is director of Children First: CEO Kansas, which provides privately funded scholarships for low-income students in Sedgwick County to attend private schools.

That organization signed on to two of the amicus briefs that the U.S. Supreme Court considered in making last week’s ruling.

10/23/97: The following is an excerpt from “Americans Go To War for Their Schools,” written by Robert Holland and published in the September 1997 edition of Middle American News. It explains how one Kansan utilized Sandra Stotsky’s recent Fordham Report, State English Standards: An Appraisal of English/Language Arts Standards in 28 States, to fight against dumbed-down standards:”One of the busiest and most effective grassroots activists is Cindy Duckett, president of the pro-academics Project Educate. Ms. Duckett, a Wichita homemaker who daily uses the Internet to network nationally on education issues, has showed that citizens can be effective by carefully documenting their case and calmly presenting it. Her group has invited some of the nation’s most eminent education researchers to analyze the state’s OBE-style standards. This is part of what Sandra Stotsky, of Harvard and Boston University, wrote about the English (or “language arts”) standards:The document is ‘written almost completely in unintelligible educationese…the language in this document often reads like an unintentional satire of politically correct pedagogy…Standards for demonstrating knowledge and skills are regularly mixed with standards that deal with behaviors, values, and attitudes…Incomprehensibly, students are expected to demonstrate ‘respect for differences in attitude, behavior, values and beliefs within formal and informal groups’ without any consideration of what and when the attitudes, behaviors, values, and beliefs of others may not be worthy of respect.’Ms. Duckett distributed a news release, widely reported by Kansas media, in which she made the point that Ms. Stotsky’s evaluation justifies the move by five State Board members to abolish performance-based assessment. ‘If the standards are bad, the tests will be flawed, too,’ she said.”

———————John Ellis, Wichita Eagle Education ReporterThe Wichita school board voted to move ahead with not one, not two, but three schools using the curriculum developed by University of Virginia English professor E.D. Hirsch.   … The original concept came from an odd political alliance of the United Teachers of Wichita – union for the district’s 3,100 teachers – and conservative parents led by educational activists Cindy Duckett and David Payne, executive director of the Kansas Family Research Institute.

    Wichita Eagle, February 4, 1998

—————Josh Funk, Wichita Eagle Education ReporterParents can examine three years’ worth of state test scores for the first time since the 1990s, allowing them to evaluate how well their children’s schools perform over time.If they want, they can also compare their schools with the best achiever in the Wichita district: Bryant Core Knowledge Magnet Elementary School.Bryant fifth-graders made the most dramatic gains in reading between 2000, when 46 percent scored passing grades of satisfactory and above, and last year, when 82.3 percent passed – well above the state average of 62.4 percent. In math, the percentage of Bryant fourth-graders scoring well soared to 85.2 percent in 2001 before dropping back to 64.3 percent in 2002 – just below the state average.

    Wichita Eagle, January 9, 2003

——————L. Kelly, Editorial Board Writer, Wichita Eagle

Kudos to Children First: CEO Kansas, for putting its money where its rhetoric is. Rather than just talk about the need for school vouchers and parental tax credits to allow more children to attend private K-12 schools, or just wait for such changes to grind their way through government channels, the group privately funds dozens of scholarships for up to $1,500 each.

And it doesn’t push a religious or political agenda in its selection process; the money may be used to attend any private school that accepts the student. (In Wichita, the options range from Catholic to Islamic, evangelical to thoroughly secular.)

The group’s guiding concept is easy to support: Giving lower-income parents the opportunity to choose the school they believe is best for their child is an investment in education and families.

Ken, thanks for all your help. And we actually HAVE had my father record some of his memories. Some have been put into transcript form, but the majority is still on tape.

Thankfully, we have a lot of his war photos still. Good stories. Like the detail he was with camped just on the other side on the Rhine, when officially no Americans were in Berlin, and how they crossed the river at night on information-gathering missions. The Russians, of course, were the first to the Reichstags, but we have photos of my dad in front of the burned out remains not long after. Anyway, I wont bore everyone with the stories – but they are fascinating. And, no…he’s not in the VA Home. We (my husband and I) built an ADA compliant home on our acreage for them to move into last fall. With some advice from PM on handicap-accessible items, we’re doing fine so far. We actually design retirement and assisted-living residences so it was a good project for us.

    Tracy,

You are correct in that there will always be a need for public schools. If every public school in Wichita closed down on Monday, there simply are not enough open spots in all private schools combined to accomodate all of those students.

Conversely, if ONLY the Catholic schools closed down on Monday and all of those students were put back into public schools, the cost would bankrupt the entire state budget.

This isn’t an “either/or” issue. It’s about making the best of all.

The public Core Knowledge schools in Wichita are ONE example of transformations I advocate. Those schools aren’t the ONLY answer but they are a part of the answer.

Yes, local board members only have control over what takes place in local schools.

Any more towards a large scale choice program here would have to come from the state level, and even then, whatever might “come down” would inevitably face a court challenge and/or a change in the state constitution — UNLESS the Supreme Court strikes down the bigoted Blaine Amendments that are a part of the Kansas constitution (and in many other states as well) as some believe may happen.

Just for the record, I don’t run any school. I have no affiliation with any school. I run a program that allows parents to choose whatever school they want their child to attend.

I sincerely appreciate your well reasoned observations and comments!!

ckd – there was mention someplace about cyber-education? Not sure what that refers to. Computers in the classroom? I’d like to know a bit more about that.
