Mayoral Menus

Wichita’s Amy Godsey gets the winner’s prize for her caption this week.We thought it was short and sweet and still managed to convey an opinion about our culinary choices in the upcoming mayoral election. Here are some of the other contenders. Evelyn Tarpy of Wichita said, "Let’s just wait for the consultant’s review." Bruce Cole, also of Wichita, had a couple of good ones: "Say, this IS different…food joints with no road construction around ‘em!" and "Those aren’t the real guys. They’re mannequins on loan from Wichita Police." Nancy Mueller sent in "Which one do you suppose will be the easiest to stomach?" Kelly VanDegrift of Wichita submitted "Taste like chicken." Mike Crabtree of Wichita said "Man, they never stop trying to feed us a bunch of bull!" Belle Plaine’s Richard Julius wanted to know "Where’s the beef?" Karen Wallace got a bit puny with "Who said Havana backup plan wouldn’t work?" She also came up with "Dine in, takeout and catered, but who’ll deliver?" Good question.

What does it matter who wins the mayoral race? Wichita has a city manager. He decides what direction the city should take. The elected council members are simply there to rubber stamp his proposals. If they dare to have an original thought — or to object to any of the “trained” manager’s initiatives — the influence peddlers and their news media mouthpieces will jump all over ‘em for “lacking leadership” or some other such tripe. Why? Well, because it’s easier and cheaper to buy off one individual than it is to buy off a majority of a living, breathing, THINKING governing body. That’s important when the public trough is the only real meal deal left in town.

Agreed, RH, which is why Mayans is trying to transfer power from Kolb to Mayor. Easier to hold an elected offical accountable than government staff.

Next question. IF Brewer wins, do you think the above described problem will be resolved, remain status quo, or get worse?

Scares the bageebers out of me to have government staff with the power they currently have. We, the people, have very little remedy. There is no accountability.

We have yet again a ‘least of two evils’ mayorial choice.

I left the ranch in ‘92.

Yes, this is a lesser of evils race. Brewer has all of Knight’s old supporters and Mayans, well, has simply failed to thrive. Brewer will win by a landslide. I don’t think there’s much doubt about that. It’s also a cinch that the Brewer administration will closely resemble the “caretaker” Knight administration.

It really galls me to read a bunch of garbage about Carl Brewer, especially when Brewer has yet had a chance to prove himself! Recovering Ranch Hand makes it sound like he knows all about Brewer with his, “lesser of two evils!” stance. If RRH is so dis-jointed about city government then I suggest he make his mark by running or offer suggestions on how Wichita should run. I’d like to know how you, Mr. RRH know that Brewer’s administration will closely resemble the administration that was under Knight’s direction? I can tell you this, Brewer’s will be a hell of a lot better than what we have now. Especially after Tuesday’s fiasco! Mayans looked like a fool! All that clowning around before the city’s leaders. I’m sure they were embarassed by his actions. To think this is mayor we show to the rest of the country! Mayans may be right about a chance in governance. But I’m sure we don’t want him in the driver’s seat when the change is made!

The best approach to the Wichita Mayor’s race is to re-elect Carlos Mayans as Mayor. This, of course, would continue Carl Brewer in his current city council position.

That way, we retain the experience of both these fellows on the Wichita city council. I would guess it takes a year or so to get up to speed serving on the city council. Ask Jim Skelton who got elected, what, a couple years ago?

Frankly under Wichita’s weak council and strong city manager form of government, the mayor has no more voting power than the six city council people. The Mayor does preside over city council meetings and greets traveling groups to Wichita. He might present the key to the city but it ISN’T the key to the city hall.

WHAT IS REALLY NEEDED IS TO REORGANIZE THE STRUCTURE OF THE CITY GOVERNMENT TO BRING THE CITY MANAGER DOWN TO EARTH. The Wichita City Manager has the entire top floor of the City Hall building for his offices … with beautiful views all directions from that “eagle’s nest.” The mayor and city council office together on the first floor near the exit door to the south … certainly not glamorous.

The Wichita City Manager even though from Georgia, as I recall, holds all the real decision making power in Wichita. But regular citizens can’t approach him or discuss real political issues with him. Council people are caught between a rock and hard place when asked opinions about the city government.

Unfortunately when the ire of the citizens reaches the boiling point, the city manager plan might be thrown out along with the city manager.

In a way, we actually have two city managers, the other being the head of the downtown development corporation. That nefarious organization is supported by a tax district of downtown businesses. The current director, Ed Wolverton, like the city manager, also serves at the will of a majority of the city council. That expensive office should also be eliminated forth with.

Good Old Boy Network Manor Road,The point remains this: who is most committed to keeping the old order you seem to love so much? Brewer, by a landslide. The media does such an exceedingly poor job of covering City Hall, we don’t see the whole picture. For those of us who believe this city is worth fighting for, for those of us who believe that this community cannot go forward unless we go forward as one community, perhaps Carlos Mayans is not the best choice. But right now, he’s the only choice…unless I really get fed up and run as a write in :)

Well, Mr.Controversy! Since YOU’RE so in love with yourself why DON’T you run as a write in and see how many votes you’d get.If you did run as a write in, what platform would you run on and who would back your campaign. The fact is you can’t garner enough support to run a campaign. Your narrow minded struture is out to serve your views and no one else. That’s why Carlos is in such deep DO-DO! He thinks he is the ONLY person who has all the answers. Carlos is so divisive he has many city employees at their wits end. Why do you think he wants more power? He wants to be KING! He wants to make all the decisions and answer to no one on the bench. No! We don’t need a Carlos Mayans for this city. He is combative, irogant and stubborn! He has no support among the business leaders. Hell, he can’t even garner enough support from the Spanish community! If you think I’m lying just go ask the Hispanic leaders go they have thrown their support behind. No, Carl Brewer isn’t beholden to no one. But he is willing to work with all who is willing to work for the betterment of Wichita. Something I fail to see in Carlos Mayans!
