A Kansas Senate committee heard an idea this week for how to save and sustain the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame in Wichita long term — offer a Kansas Lottery scratch ticket that could generate revenue specifically for it. Some storied names in Kansas sports spoke on the museum’s behalf, too — former Kansas State University football coach Bill Snyder (in photo) and Max Falkenstien, the retired announcer for the University of Kansas Jayhawks. The scratch card would allow the whole state to support the hall voluntarily; that’s appropriate, as it tells the whole state’s sports history.
The most important message sent at the hearing, though, was that the Legislature should act soon to save the hall and preserve the heritage it celebrates. “I guarantee you this means a lot to Kansans, because they know how sports can bond a family,” Snyder said.

I don’t worship sports, so there is no need for me to go to a sports cathedral.
But I don’t see no problem with a scratch ticket for the KSHOF. It’s actually a good idea.
Let it die. This has gone long enough, it is a boring museum, no one wants to go. It has been moved around with its final resting place in Wichita, still no one wants to go. R.I.P.
I agree with Joe. A scratch ticket will allow those who support the thing contribute. Then, if that doesn’t work, ‘plan B’ as roger notes.
Maybe we should also institute a scratch ticket to fund the operating deficits for the Arena while we are at it. Plan ahead.

If there is a minimum of expense with the scratch ticket think ok. Let those who would support this museum do it that way.
Personally I haven’t and have no interest in visiting.
Why not give the money to the Universities for the supposed crumbling building funds and add the HOF to the list with the Indian Center, cowtown, ice rink, Black History museum and all the rest.
If it is “important to the people of Kansas” as they say, why is it in trouble financially? Make it part of the new downtown arena.
Where is the promotion of the KSHOF? I don’t see any.
Typical Wichita thinking if it does not make money it is worthless. I guess we should just tear it down and let it be another parking lot or better yet a homeless center.
I wonder how many of the naysayers have been to the KSHOF. I bet it is zero.
I went to it and found it to be very entertaining. The KSHOF could be a great attraction to the state of Kansas if the state would fund it properly.
If it doesn’t make money, it IS worthless. That is just a fact of life. Would you buy a business advertised “by owner great gas station, lots of history but hasn’t made a penny in years”? Nobody is interested in local and state sports hall of fames. That is what the national halls are for. Any local “hall of fame” should be relegated to the halls of the new arena where displays and artifacts of local sports history could be proudly displayed.
Kev – have to disagree with “If it doesn’t make money, it IS worthless.” Parks, etc, don’t make money but they are a part of our community. That said, something like the HOF and other ‘quasi-commercial’ entities should at least approach self-supporting.
Interesting idea about putting it in the Albino Pachyderm.
