Today’s story: Oilman Wink Hartman wants 5,000 seat arena in Park City
Hartman has seen small arenas work well in places like North Carolina and Arkansas. That’s why he wants to put a 5,000-seat arena in Park City.
Hartman wants his arena to have indoor soccer and (arena) football, and he’s considering whether to add equipment for an ice facility.
He plans four basketball courts and extensive workout facilities.
“It’ll be a sporting venture for people to come for different types of sports,” he says.
That includes flag football, volleyball and corporate leagues. There also will be athletic instruction for kids.
Hartman’s plans aren’t definite, but they’re looking good with help from Park City officials.
——
Let’s get a definition, “arena” is 10,000 seats or larger. Hartman is building a gym.
If any Thunder discussions and whining about “fees” in the downtown arena or at the Coliseum costs today, the County should kick them to the curb. Let them play out there. I’m not likely to see Thunder games downtown in the future.
Park City gov acts like its not part of the County, but this gym shouldn’t affect the downtown arena at all.
Wink needs to check into rehab … again. It’s an occupational hazard. Sedgwick County does not support “real sports” … what in hell would make him think they would support “quasi-games”? Flag football, oh hell yes. People would stand in line for that, no doubt. We already have one “arena from hell” in the works — damn, we sure need another one.
Mrage and rm6046: You are correct, we don’t need two arenas, a workable one in Park City and a non-usable government white elephant, albatross arena in downtown Wichita.
Kind of strange, the $250,000,000.63 downtown arena will contain millions of dollars worth of ice making equipment but NO ICE HOCKEY WILL EVER BE PLAYED THERE.
I suggest the arena be debated without name calling. When pro-arena supporters had the upper hand, they couldn’t debate the issue without calling names and belittling anti-arena folks. Of course, pro-arena supporters had the benefit of $300,000 in county tax funds FOR PARTIES to promote the arena. Anti-arena people including myself only had our billfolds for funds to oppose the effort.
Sedgwick County government should immediately order 14,800 mannequins to seat in the proposed arena. Wind-up keys would allow them to rise, spin, cheer, hi-five and re-seat themselves on a five-minute interval. Of course, the 200 or so politicians and out of town cap-pistols who are promoting the downtown arena will be partying in the taxpayer funded luxurious sky boxes.
SO, LETS REVOTE THIS GOVERNMENT SPONSORED DOWNTOWN ICE HOCKEY ARENA AND FINISH IT OFF ONCE AND FOR ALL. ITS UNETHICAL TO SPEND A QUARTER OF A BILLION DOLLARS OF TAXPAYERS HARD EARNED DOLLARS ON THIS WHITE ELEPHANT ALBATROSS ARENA PLUS UNTOLD ADDITIONAL CITY OF WICHITA TAX FUNDS FOR STREETS, SANITARY SEWERS, STORM SEWERS, ETC. AND SUBSIDIZE THE ARENA OPERATIONAL COSTS FROM NOW ON.
One thing we don’t need is a vacant GHOST arena rising up on cold February mornings like this one.
Incidentally, for clarification, even though we share an estimable name/nic, that is, “Wink,” we are not the same person. JWink
For what it’s worth — Super Bowl will be close, probably down to which team has the final possession. Colts should win, but not by 7 — take the Bears and the points!
Who hates football like me and will be here instead of watching the game?
I declare today ‘domestic violence awareness’ day.
rm, I agree – take the Bears and the points. =)
It’s a beautiful football day!
Da Bears and the points IS the bet. Please excuse me while I go and beat me wife.
I’m making my world famous BBQ sauce to go with my world famous babyback ribs…
And some wings….
And some nachos…
Good wife-beatin’ food! =)
I’ll put my money on Woody’s wife. She’ll knock him out the first round.
Dem wimmen needs to be taught to respect.
She gots to know her position.
If Indy don’t win, some heads are gonna roll…….
Gee, enema and golf are sure quiet on the other threads right now….
golf is busy cooking ribs and prepping wings
Fleet is busy beating his wife.
If Grossman is hot, the Bears.
Trouble is, he’s inconsistent. And Peyton Manning can make things happen.
Could be a good one . . .
I’m not really that keen on Pro Football. Everytime a receiver drops a pass, I just think, they pay you a million dollars for that?
I do like college football though. Go CATS! Beat Nebraska!
PMom,
I don’t hate football. In fact, I’ve always been a huge football fan. But today’s game doesn’t interest me in the least. Colts and Bears? Good grief. Pathetic. Even the temptation of SuperBowl commercials isn’t enough to get my attention. I can’t remember when I last watched a SuperBowl. Before the Janet Jackson incident, because I missed that. The hype of it all is sickening. They sure know how to play the guys, don’t they? ;)
Too bad I’m up to my, um, ears in things to do, or I’d join you here for the day. C’est la vie.
Sorry, Capn’, but the odds of Grossman getting hot today in Miami are about the same as Fleetgolfwood coming out and admitting that they have a crush on Hillary.
Ain’t going to happen.
The Bear’s D may win it for them – the Patriots have proven that you can get to Peyton – but the best that the Bears can hope for out of Grossman today is that he doesn’t screw it up.
But, what the hell, I am going to have the grill and the nachos fired up – some good friends and a few cold beers – life is good today!
“Go CATS! Beat Nebraska!”
Now, that’s something I can get behind. :)
I love to play sports but watch ‘em on television?
Isn’t there some wet paint that needs watchin’ somewhere?
Besides, I am no longer able to watch television with commercials. Any commercial has approximately 0.000000000000000001 seconds to grab my attention. If it doesn’t, I’m outta there.
So the odds’re good that I’ll end up in another room, watching something else, or listening to music when the game ends.
Which ain’t a problem, rumor has it there’s these things called “sports web sites” that will actually list the final score. (!!!) And anything worth watching should show up on youtube by tonight anyway.
Television is a serious waste of bandwidth.
“0.000000000000000001 seconds to grab my attention”
Man, Pedant, that is some serious ADD.
I am usual good for at least a second or two.
Yeah, it’s bad alright. I only listen to NPR for that reason, and even there whenever Terry Gross or whoever takes “a short break” I’m thinking, where’s the channel button?
Unfortunately, though, there is no option (I don’t subscribe to satellite radio). Ain’t nowhere to go if you leave NPR.
Which reminds me, I saw a big black van on Rock Road a couple days ago sportin’ a humongous advertisement for “Bob ‘n Tom” (I think).
I’m bettin’ Bob ‘n Tom are more excellent reasons that I never listen to commercial radio anymore.
But I ain’t goin’ to find out, this’ll remain a hypothesis of mine indefinitely.
What time does the game start anyway?
5:30 – You’ll be able to tell because there will be no cars on the road.
rm – DA BEARS!!!!!!!
I think a 5000-seat facility might just be a winner – hockey, basketball (maybe), indoor football, soccer. As Wink points out, that is the size the market will support.
As for the over-priced Albino Pachyderm …

Thought you guys might enjoy seeing what I ‘did in the war’.
Hank
Colts over the Bears, 24 to 16.
Hank
Hank – I’ll have to pass that video to a retired submariner I work with. By the way – YOU DIE!!!!!
;^)
Staying hom today Ben. You and your boy have a great time!
I’ve promised some leashes to some people and i’m going to finish them while I watch the Superbowl.
Friendly wager? Six pack of beer of the winner’s choice? I’ll take the Colts, even up.
Hank
Unfortunately I think you are right on the score. However, I’ll make a slightly different wager – loser drops 10 bucks at Gerard or St. Anthoney Shelter.
http://www.kansas.com/mld/kansas/16616983.htm
I hope to see fewer cars on the road AFTER the game.
Please no drinking/driving!
Good point p-mama. I am a designated driver. Have a good time but that’s it.
Good man Ben!
Only watching the game for the commercials.
I wish I had the thirty some years of time and energy I put into my team of choice back. I don’t follow football anymore. Free agency killed the game I loved. Hard to have the urge to tear the guy across the lines head off when you may share a locker room with him next year. Heh heh. And given their performance the last several years, I am glad I lost interest in my former team when I did. Who needs the aggravation?
With that clue, can you guess the team who’s merchandise occupies several boxes in my basement?
FYI, Friends, please ignore any football predictions I may ever make in the future. :)
Ben: In my name or yours? Either way is fine.
rm – I thought my bet was with Hank. What the heck – 20 bucks to St. Anthony Shelter. Kind of like our bet last fall – either way the ‘good guys’ win!
I could not have ever cared less about either of the teams today. The way the Colts franchise treated Baltimore was pretty lame.
I did not get to see all the ads.
My favorite?
The guinea pig, rabbit and mouse.
J Rs former team clue 2.
They did win the Super bowl…..
Works for me, pal. It’ll be in in the mail tomorrow morning!
Hi rm – I get the feeling we are both sending checks – I lost my bet with Hank. But, who cares! They sure need the money more than we do. There but for the Grace of God …
JR: After 17 years in Dallas, who the hell cares. If it ain’t Da’ Boys, I don’t care. And I think Jerry Jones is an ass !
It’s only money, and the wisest person in the land is the one that runs out of money and breath at exactly the same moment! (They can make better use of it than I can.)
Best. Halftime. Show. Ever.
Prince is kickass!!!
I loved the careerbuilder ads, and the Blockbuster ad was great. Overall pretty weak crop of ads really.
I think it’s funny that they make rules about where the game can be played because of the weather and it rained on thier butts all game, that’s funny!
So true rm. We would blow it on beer and fast cars; they’ll spend on food and diapers. I can handle that. Besides, if I tell my wife that the game led to money going there she will let me watch them – she is involved with Catholic charities and the Shelter. She doesn’t mine me losing bets this way.
Again, my friend, it works for me!!
Hey, Left or Right, let’s hear it for Tony Dungy, the First African American coach to win the Super Bowl!!!!
Tony is one hell of a class act – a first class man of the people.
Thank God for people like Tony!!!!
On that I agree WSC – although I would have preferred the Bears. Oh well, goodnight all – great game anyway and some fun commercials. I wonder how many people will be ‘missing’ tomorrow at work.
I’ll second that EXCEPT, I’m waiting on the day that the color of their skin is not an issue even worth commenting about.
Well my friends, I never make a bet unless I can write the check. I’ll send them twenty too. It was a pretty good game, I wish the Bears had of done a little better, they’re a tough team.
I really didn’t have a dog in this hunt, my team didn’t make it through the playoffs.
Hank
Tony Dungy is a total class act.A man of noble character on and off the field. A true champion whether his team had won or not.
Some OK commercials. Nothing extremely memorable. The first Budlight with the rock paper scissors was good; the budweiser dalmation was cute; the career builders were ok; I think I liked the doritos the best with the lady checker.
Thanks, Hank, good night.
Let’s not forget that Lovie Smith was a total class act, too.
Both coaches were the best – class all the way!
What a day for African American coaches – what a day for the NFL!!!!
http://www.boston.com/news/nation/articles/2004/09/05/911_hijackers_tied_to_saudi_government_graham_says_in_book/
WASHINGTON — Two of the Sept. 11, 2001, hijackers had a support network in the United States that included agents of the Saudi government, and the Bush administration and FBI blocked a congressional investigation into that relationship, Senator Bob Graham wrote in a book to be released Tuesday.
The discovery of the financial backing of the two hijackers “would draw a direct line between the terrorists and the government of Saudi Arabia, and trigger an attempted coverup by the Bush administration,” the Florida Democrat wrote.
And in Graham’s book, “Intelligence Matters,” obtained by The Miami Herald yesterday, he makes clear that some details of that financial support from Saudi Arabia were in the 27 pages of the congressional inquiry’s final report that were blocked from release by the administration, despite the pleas of leaders of both parties on the House and Senate intelligence committees.
Graham also disclosed that General Tommy Franks told him on Feb. 19, 2002, four months after the invasion of Afghanistan, that many important resources — including the Predator drone aircraft crucial to the search for Osama bin Laden and Al Qaeda leaders — were being shifted to prepare for a war against Iraq.
******
Worst President Ever has close ties with the Saudis. The Bin Laden family actually hired H. W. Bush as a consultant through his Carlyle Group.
If you’re friends with Bush, you can blow up the World Trade Center and nothing will happen to you.
If your Saddam Hussein, you can watch after ten years of sanctions have destroyed your country and your ability to wage war and get flipping INVADED.
I did get to see the halftime show. I was always a big Prince fan, and he did a fabulous job out there in the rain.
Kept worrying that his dancers were going to slip and fall.
JR,
I won’t venture a guess, but I freely admit I’m a fan of America’s Team. I’ll watch a few others (Miami if I’m in the mood), but it’s been the Cowboys for 40 years for me. :) Landry was something special.
rm,
My brain is tired tonight. Are you saying Dallas is THE team? (Yes, Jones IS an ass, but, hey, that new stadium will be da bomb!)
I wore my Emmitt Smith jersey today in commemoration of the team that should’ve been in the Bowl. ;)
Capn,
Someone alluded to some sneaky stuff in a chat room last night and it sure sounded like what you posted.
Nasty stuff, that.
Landry?
Oh RD, YUCK!
Yuck.
That guy could out Spock Mr. Spock.
Only time I ever thought he was human was when I saw him throw a clipboard.
Double yuck on the Cowboys. They are my brothers favorite team. He still follows football. He lives less than a mile away, so I could hear the scream when Dallas went down in the playoffs on that field goal gaffe.
America’s team indeed. With all those triple reverses and shotgun offense crap? Texas glitz.
My former team has a pretty good record against the Cowboys…..though they have engaged them only a few times….That’s hint 4.
Hint 5 is my former team moved and moved again before I lost interest……
JR: Does the term “attention span” ring any bells? Oilers, Cardinals, Rams…a virtual plethora of LOSERS!
RD: I love it. Emmitt Smith jersey! One would have to go far to find a better man than Tom Landry … unfortunately, we’d have to search under many rocks to find a slug as worthless as Jerry Jones. He’s so damned dumb he thought the Tuna was bluffing! Damn, what a moron. Perhapshe can woo back Barry. :) And yes, DALLAS is THE TEAM, and if we can get rid of the slug, we;ll br bsck !!
*we’ll be back !! To early to type !
Make the world a better place, Punch a democrat in the face!
A man walked into a very high-tech bar. As he sat down on a stool he noticedthat the bartender was a robot. The robot clicked to attention and asked,”Sir, what will you have?”
The man thought a moment then replied, “A martini please.”
The robot clicked a couple of times and mixed the best martini the man had ever had.
The robot then asked, “Sir, what is your IQ?”
The man answered “Oh, about 164.”
The robot then proceeded to discuss the theory of relativity, interstellar space travel, the latest medical break-through’s, etc.
The man was most impressed. He left the bar but thought he would try a different tack . He returned and took a seat. Again the robot clicked and asked what he would have. “A martini please”.
Again it was superb. The robot again asked. “What is your IQ sir?”
This time the man answered, “Oh, about 100″.
The robot started discussing Nascar racing, the latest basketball scores, and what to expect the Dodgers to do this weekend.
The guy had to try it one more time. He left, returned and took a stool.Again a martini, and the question, “What is your IQ?”.This time the man drawled out, “Uh… about 50″.
The robot clicked then leaned close and very slowly asked…
A-r-e……… y-o-u-r……… p-e-o-p-l-e………. g-o-i-n-g………..t-o…….. n-o-m-i-n-a-t-e….H-i-l-l-a-r-y-???
The Raiders.
How perfectly apropos.
Anon–
You posted that a few months ago.
It wasn’t very funny then either.
Anon, I believe that’s a recycled BUSH joke. Get some new material, man.
rm,
Barry SWITZER? God forbid! The man ruined my team. There was a great article in a reputable magazine (Playboy maybe? *grin* actually Texas Monthly) about how Aikman had played for a short while for Barry at OU. Let’s just say they didn’t get along AT ALL and Barry was the reason Aikman transfered to UCLA. (That’s not mentioned in the wikipedia article.)
And speaking of that wiki article, I’m totally surprised to learn this: “He is also a joint owner of the NASCAR Nextel Cup racing team, Hall of Fame Racing, along with fellow former Cowboys quarterback, Roger Staubach.” Yeah, I was a Staubach and Aikman fan, but Emmitt is my guy, hands down.
I think anon is going through all his old Bush jokes and changing the words.
How original.
savior man- how very christian of you.
You know, thanks to our wonderful legal system. Wittig is gonna get off without serving a single day in prison based on his conviction.
I think he’s had more than enough appeals. I think a judge should say you are going to jail, you are serving this time, you were found guilty, and there will be no appeal.
The appeals system is necessary, but when the evidence is so profound against this man. Refuse it.
Erik: I agree with you. Wittig is probably the biggest crook to ever hit Kansas. I seem to remember the figure of $3.2 billion dollars of debt run up by Wittig and his co-conspirators which he dumped off on Westar electric bill payers. These ratepayers probably include some 30% of Kansans and all Wichita citizens.
Seems like penalties for white collar criminals is inversely proportional to the enormity of their crimes and the damages they cause the public.
Saw Sunflower community action in Topeka today. What a bunch of losers. They were objectionably loud in the capitol, showing absolutely no respect for the Legislature at all. They were rudely shoving and pushing their way thru hallways, and yes, they left their trash behind again.
What a bunch of no class rabble.
