And for all those of you voting between Paul Gray and Michael ODonnell, it should be noted that the house where O’Donnell purports to “live” looks awfully darned vacant…

… One would almost think that he “moved” specifically for the purpose of running for council in that district. He’s a Bel Aire carpetbagger, and probably still lives up there.

Why do banks charge a fee on “insufficient funds” when they know there is not enough money?

Why does someone believe you when you say there are four billion stars, but check when you say the paint is wet?

Why do they use sterilized needles for death by lethal injection?

Why doesn’t Tarzan have a beard?

Whose idea was it to put an “S” in the word “lisp”?

If people evolved from apes, why are there still apes?

Why is it that no matter what color bubble bath you use the bubbles are always white?

Is there ever a day that mattresses are not on sale?

Why do people constantly return to the refrigerator with hopes that something new to eat will have materialized?

How do those dead bugs get into those enclosed light fixtures?

In winter why do we try to keep the house as warm as it was in summer when we complained about the heat?

How come you never hear father-in-law jokes?

Why does hooey always come in bunches?

Why do Kamikaze pilots wear helmets?

Prediction today – mayor will be Brewer and Mayans in that order. Brewer will exceed 50%. Question is: will “other” exceed Mayans? Unfortunately, “other” is split many ways.

  6. Posted February 27, 2007 at 7:59 am | Permalink

    Ben, Interesting prediction…

I think ill probally agree with you… The question is is the Anti-Brewer vote enough to allow carlos a 2nd term?

Brewer has quite the list of Good Ol Boys on his contributor lists, including former mayor Knight, lots of developers and execs of local companies.

Hum, wonder what kind of position Brewer will take, pro big business anyone? stomp out the little guys…

    Carlos is toast …

My biggest hope for Brewer is that he will pay some attention to protecting/rejuvenating existing neighborhoods. A good example of that is what happened at 10th/Volutsia. Those residents should never have been driven to take the actions they did.

    Ben

What do you think of the proposal put forth in a eagle article a few months ago about paving all of the dirt roads in town?

One of the contributors said that it would benefit and help revitalize those areas, noting that a majority of the unpaved streets within the city (excluding outlying, recently annexed areas) are in the southern and central parts of the city…

“It used to be that those without college degrees could count on well-paying jobs in manual labor; those days are long gone. Now, not only are we losing low-skilled jobs to nations with lower wages, but more and more of these nations are developing education systems to compete with us for high-skilled jobs. And as technology and communications make the world a smaller place, they are growing ever more competitive.

For much of the 20th century, the education level of America’s work force was second-to-none. But others have caught up, and even moved past us. Now, unless we take bold action, we risk losing our competitive edge. The problem is not that America doesn’t spend enough money on education — we spend enormous amounts, far more than any other nation. But we’re not getting a sufficient return on our investment. The fact is, our education system looks a lot like the U.S. auto industry in the 1970s — stuck in a flabby, inefficient, outdated production model driven by the needs of employees rather than consumers.”

I’m sure people would love to have someone else pay to pave the street in front of their house. But let the residents of dirst streets pay, just as those with paved streets paid for them through special assessments, or through costs the developer paid.

There is a mechanism whereby the residents can petition to levy special taxes on the property to pay for streets.

  11. Posted February 27, 2007 at 8:15 am | Permalink

The “other” being split too many ways is unfortunate. Both Mayans and Brewer have proven they aren’t good for our city. There is nothing Brewer can do better with mayor in front of his name that he couldn’t have done as a council member. So, it will take TWO elections for Wichita to move forward. Let’s keep our eyes on the future!

    anonymous,

This is true and I agree with you, but for argument sake, should the city pay for these streets for families that live off of minimum wage just to improve the more impoverished areas? It could even be billed as an ability of cutting crime because “good people” might not move out.

Feb. 27, 2007 — A suicide bomber struck at the main entrance to Bagram air base in Afghanistan today, as Vice President Dick Cheney was visiting.

Interesting story about WalMart and Chine

    http://money.aol.com/news/articles/_a/wal-mart-buys-stake-china-retailer/20070227063109990001

“SHANGHAI, China (Feb. 27) – Wal-Mart is buying a 35 percent stake in a company that operates Trust-Mart, a major Chinese discount chain, as international competitors jostle for position in China’s rapidly growing retail market.

Wal-Mart may eventually take managerial control of Taiwan-based Bounteous Co., which operates 101 Trust-Mart stores in 34 major cities in China, the U.S. retail giant said in a statement Tuesday.”

    *****************************

I find it interesting that the company they are buying into is based in TAIWAN and operates a major chain in CHINA. Seems like some sort of ‘de facto’ accomodation has been reached between China and breakaway Taiwan. I wonder if we will see a negotiated reunification similar to hong Kong?

No, Ben – it is supposed to be a “serious” site that is run by the son of Phyllis Shafley (former Miss America – famous conservative). The intent is to provide an alternative to Wikipedia which these folks claim is left-biased and anti-Christian. The site is down often because they are frequently cleaning up the contributions made by folks who disagree with them.

Proposed topics for discussion at conservipedia:

    1. The Muslims started all the Crusades and Christians were merely defending themselves.

    2. Mary Magdelane was a prostitute verified by other written papers and it has been proven that virgin births do exist in humanity. There are NO other verified cultural similarities between biblical stories and the bible.

    3. Dinosaur bones were proven to be actual bone sculptures from real creatures created by pagans and buried deep in the earth as part of their rituals. OR Dragons are really dinosaurs (that’s an actual topic of discussion among Christians). On a related topic, DNA- was a joke on society by scientists since you can’t actually see it with the naked eye and carbon dating was a myth invented by Darwin.

    4. It was pagans that stole Christmas and Easter from the Christians.

    5. They found the Ark of the Covenant.

    6. Men really do have a missing rib.

Agreed, Ben. Brewer and Mayans will advance to the final. Doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure that one out. Brewer’s hidden agenda is to replace his current council position with ANOTHER liberal like himself. That’s not all bad, especially for those of you who like to hand over your personal accountabliity to the government and blame them when all goes bad. HOWEVER, for those of us who take personal responsibility for our insurance, our jobs, our children, our marriage, ourselves…another ‘Brewer’ on the city Council is a scary thought. If I wanted a socialistic government to take of me, I would move to Cuba or North Korea or Venzuela.

From Springsteen’s Aug 5th Letter to the Editor of The New York Times–an impassioned plea for John Kerry:

This year, however, for many of us the stakes have risen too high to sit this election out. . . .

“Like many others, in the aftermath of 9/11, I felt the country’s unity. I don’t remember anything quite like it. I supported the decision to enter Afghanistan and I hoped that the seriousness of the times would bring forth strength, humility and wisdom in our leaders. Instead, we dived headlong into an unnecessary war in Iraq, offering up the lives of our young men and women under circumstances that are now discredited. We ran record deficits, while simultaneously cutting and squeezing services like afterschool programs. We granted tax cuts to the richest 1 percent (corporate bigwigs, well-to-do guitar players), increasing the division of wealth that threatens to destroy our social contract with one another and render mute the promise of “one nation indivisible.”
