Can Obama take back the ‘w’ word?

Barack Obama suggested on CBS’ “60 Minutes” that if his campaign ran into trouble, it wouldn’t be because of past mistakes (such as his admitted marijuana and cocaine use) but because of future mistakes. Then he made new mistake No. 1: telling an Iowa crowd over the weekend that we “have seen over 3,000 lives of the bravest young Americans wasted.” He repeatedly has apologized, calling it a “slip of the tongue.”
Maybe so, but whether or not Obama says the “w” word, it’s implied in his harsh characterizations of the war.

Yeah those lives weren’t wasted, they put millions in the coffers of Halliburton and Blackwater.

Here is a liberal take on Obama.

MAUREEN DOWD RIPS OBAMA: ‘HE LOOKED AS IF HE NEEDED A SMOKE AND HE NEEDED IT BAD’Tue Feb 13 2007 22:32:06 ET

NY TIMES edit queen Maureen Dowd unloads on Barack Obama in her Wednesday filing.

On the trail in Iowa, Dowd writes: “Obama’s so slender his wedding band looked as if it was slipping off… there was a wariness in his dark eyes.”

When a reporter asked him Obama whether he’d had a heater in his podium during his announcement speech in subzero Springfield, Obama hesitated.

Dowd slings: “He shot a look that said, ‘Are you from PEOPLE magazine?’ before conceding that, unlike Abe Lincoln, he’d had a heater.”

Dowd describes Obama as a “tad testy” as he was “traipsing around desolate stretches of snowy — and extremely white — Iowa.”

Obama had “moments of looking conflicted.”

Dowd claims that no fewer than three times last week, Obama got indignant about the beach-babe attention given to a shot of him in the Hawaiian surf.

“You’ve been reporting on how I look in a swimsuit,” Obama lectured a reporter.

Dowd snaps: “He poses for the cover of MEN’S VOGUE and then gets huffy when people don’t treat him as Hannah Arendt.”

Gosh, for a minute there, I thought the “w” word would be Winfrey.

Notice how the wingnuts are already calling him Obama Winfrey? Or Ossama Obama? Or pointing out that his middle name is Hussein, like that makes him unworthy to be president?

Oh well, typical wingnut behavior. If you cant attack him on substance, you can always go back to junior high….

Supports the “forced birth” agenda of the kansas taliban? Check!

Doesnt give a damn about deficit spending? Check!

Supports bushco’s war for oil? Check!

SO… who do we know who fits THAT bill?

    “Wasted” is exactly right.

Three thousand dead . . . dead for a pack of lies by the Worst. President. Ever.

The press might have to get used to somebody who doesn’t lie through his teeth constantly.

It may be troubling to hear. It is cowardly and irresponsible to refuse to hear things that are troubling. Those 3.000 lives lost in Iraq? They WERE wasted. Absolutely nothing positive has come from their sacrifice. Their INTENT, namely to fight for their country, IS noble, and not diminished. But the fact is? They essentially died…..for bush. To die for george bush… Yes truly a waste.

Let us pray:”O Lord our Father, our young patriots, idols of our hearts, go forth to battle — be Thou near them! With them — in spirit — we also go forth from the sweet peace of our beloved firesides to smite the foe. O Lord our God, help us to tear their soldiers to bloody shreds with our shells; help us to cover their smiling fields with the pale forms of their patriot dead; help us to drown the thunder of the guns with the shrieks of their wounded, writhing in pain; help us to lay waste their humble homes with a hurricane of fire; help us to wring the hearts of their unoffending widows with unavailing grief; help us to turn them out roofless with little children to wander unfriended the wastes of their desolated land in rags and hunger and thirst, sports of the sun flames of summer and the icy winds of winter, broken in spirit, worn with travail, imploring Thee for the refuge of the grave and denied it — for our sakes who adore Thee, Lord, blast their hopes, blight their lives, protract their bitter pilgrimage, make heavy their steps, water their way with their tears, stain the white snow with the blood of their wounded feet! We ask it, in the spirit of love, of Him Who is the Source of Love, and Who is the ever-faithful refuge and friend of all that are sore beset and seek His aid with humble and contrite hearts.Amen.

Truth be told, “wasted” is not a slip of the tongue. Kerry’s “botched joke” excuse has more substance. What I would question, truth be told, if the ultimate sacrifice for a cause you believe inis “wasted” (truth be told, we are still a 100% volunteer military) what about all the years spent in military service as well? Are those years wasted? What say you WE bloggers?

This was inevitable. Obama’s a babe in the woods, inexperienced and out of his league in running for president, and the honeymoon of media fascination with him was bound to wear off once he announced and was a real candidate.

He started reading and believing all that media flattery when he was a darling of Oprah and the press; now he’s about to experience the other side, as they pick him apart.

The media giveth, the media taketh away.

I disagree with Barack “taking back” that statement.

Saying that those lives were wasted is NOT a reflection on the brave men and women that died – it is a reflection on the lying bastard that sent them to die.

It is only the most diehard of Republican right wingers that still approves of the Bush War of Choice. The rest of us have either seen the light or have been against the war from the begining.

When the final verdict is in, those lives lost will have been wasted. There is no other word to describe the loss.

Again, it is not a reflection on those that died – it is an indictment of those that sent them to die for a worthless cause.

It does make a difference when what you believe in is based on lies and manipulation.Yes, the military is all-volunteer (for enlistments, warrants, and commisions), but the buck stops at volunteering right there. Although you can volunteer for deployments and extensions (and many do), most people like myself are volunTOLD (as we so fondly refer to the process in the Army). As for the last question, the military is a career. You can’t waste a career by having one. You can waste opportunities, but that is true with just about anything. So this last question really doesn’t make any sense whatsoever.

If we don’t all read Mark Twain’s words regularly, read them with our hearts and be moved by them, will we become so hardened, so accepting of men’s faults, our expectations so low that we’ll find ourselves thinking the best thing a president of the United States can do is appoint good judges?

    GMC . . . pretty funny.

As if Kerry and Gore weren’t old hands and the media gutted them anyway.

It’s not “the media” that are fawning on Obama, it’s the crowds that hear him speak. It’s not “the media” that give him rock star treatment–the media has already determined that Hillary is going to win, and they’re doing their damnedest to make sure that happens.

Big corporate media is very comfortable with corporatists like the Clintons. BillJefferson (BJ) is the guy who gave us NAFTA fer gosh sakes.

C’mon, Capn, you’re not that naive. The media drives those crowds, and the same media that drove him to that rock star status will pick and gnaw at him now that he’s there. That’s what they do. And to a certain extent, that is their job – find those warts, and put them out there.

I suspect Obama didn’t quite understand what he was stepping into. He’s a relative babe at this national politics thing. Maybe, someday, after wiping the dew from behind his ears and with a few battles under his belt, he’ll be ready to run for president. But not yet. Call me when he has something of substance on his resume.
