The race to replace Tim Shallenburger as chairman of the Kansas Republican Party could get interesting. Farmer-rancher and state Sen. Tim Huelskamp (in photo), R-Fowler, wants the job, which he’d combine with his lawmaking. “I’m conservative, but if you look at polls of Kansans, they are as well,” Huelskamp told the Hutchinson News.
Wichita businessman Mike Pompeo, president of Sentry International and co-founder of Thayer Aerospace, announced his candidacy on Wednesday, with running mate state Rep. Peggy Mast, R-Emporia. In an announcement statement, Pompeo said, “We must improve the effectiveness of our efforts to organize and raise capital, the professionalism of our advance voting efforts, and the thoroughness of our voter identification plans,” adding, “there is no time to waste and much to be done — it’s about Republicans winning.”
Meanwhile, the KC Buzz Blog has noted blogosphere talk that outgoing Attorney General (and incoming Johnson County District Attorney) Phill Kline may seek to moonlight in the state GOP job. Another rumor is that Kris Kobach, a former candidate for Congress from Overland Park, may also run.
Kansas Republicans choose their leader at Kansas Day weekend activities Jan. 26-28 in Topeka.

Lord, putting Phill “the Pervert” Klline in charge of the KS State GOP would virtually guarantee that the Democrats would own the state for the next millenium. The Republicans couldn’t do any worse if they pardoned Dennis Rader and made him head of the GOP.
Phill Klline is the poster boy for “Idiots in Office.”
The Republicans are going to go down a very steep, slippery slope if they even consider Klline to be the head of their party.
Oh please, please, please let Phil get the GOP job!!!
I can’t think of anything better to help swing the political pendulem back to the center.
Don King. He could then organize the ‘debates’ between moderates and conservatives and sell tickets. That would help with fund raising.
Kline would be TERRIBLE in the GOP leadership position. He has already done enough damage to the Republican party. Kline is a ON ISSUE hack.
Huelskamp OTOH is a whack job too, that hs his position only for one reason, to line his pockets. He is a rancher and pimps our legislation every vote to the Kansas Livestock Ass’n. and the KFB.
I am a VERY concerned Kansas Republican, and I am watching my state wither and die. I am also watching my party dissolve into “one isssue wonders” with little concern for the future and direction of the State of Kansas.
The Green energy association has just reported that there is a GLUT of ethanol plants being built, and the price of alcohol is falling and will only falll more with more production. I bet Tommy boy will be the first lining up the ethanol boys for subsidies.
No Timmy is not a good one.
My vote would be to woo Paul Morrision back and make him head of the GOP.
He seems to know what “political conservatism” means which is what a Republican is. The “Social Conservatism” exhibited by Phil CLine is NOT by default “politically conservative”, and neither is requiring ID/CREO to be taught as a scientific theory.
THe Republican party MUST purge itself from the fundamentalist Whacko’s like Phil Kline, Iris Van Meter, Connie Morris, and that whack job woman that waqs running for the Sec. of State. These people represent Forced perspective and a governmental intervention pushing christianity in schools and government. I can go fo the 10 commandments in the the City Square, but the Whack job portion of the Republican party in Kansas is just as bad as the Wahabbist Talibahn. Fundamentalist extremeism is extremism.
We have larger things to worry about such as an illegal invasion from the south. We have more budget strains coming when those states that support illegal aliens become magnets for large populations of illegals. Then you have to pay for their health care and other issues.
Illegal immigration is THE issue facing us NOW and in the future.
“but the Whack job portion of the Republican party in Kansas is just as bad as the Wahabbist Talibahn. Fundamentalist extremeism is extremism.”
heheheheheheheh. And tim hurlskamp (heheh) is the poster boy for the “kansas wahabbist talibah”. Didnt he read from the bible on the floor during his jihad on the hate amendment?
He is one of the biggest right wing nut jobs in the state.
Yes, please, put him or phillllll in charge of the republican party. Put phred in charge of the democrats.
Then, maybe after THOSE bastids shred the state constitution and our entire government, we can use the backlash to actually make real progress in kansas.
I know. Pipe dream.
Pass that bong over here again…..
And coming from big irrigation, big farms, big corn, big cattle and big ethanol, under timmy, the ksgop position on water issues would be….
….dictated by the KLA and the KFB? Jesus wept.
Wave buh-bye to what’s left of our water.
