A totally unrelated topic, hard to believe on this date and time, but besides _Refugee_ has Tom Petty done a better song than _Break Down_?

List your justification and supporting opinion/data. Thank you. Happy New Year…

    Dear Steven,

Free Falling is, without a doubt, Tom Petty’s, best ever song.

    Justification?

Why, my superior intellect and ability to appreciate the simplicity of the melody combined with the complex lyrics.

“She’s a good girl, loves her mamma, loves Je -sus, and Americatoo.

She’s a good girl, crazy ’bout Elvis, loves horses, and her boyfriend too.”

    Mary,

I don’t make NY resolutions anymore. They only get broken within a few weeks, and then I get down on myself for not being able to stick with them.

Which doesn’t mean I don’t attempt to make some much needed adjustments to my life. ;) I just don’t call them NY resolutions. *grin*

Good luck with the exercise machine! I’ve been looking at treadmills.

US Complicity in Crimes Lies Buried With SaddamRobert Fisk, The Independent

We’ve shut him up. The moment Saddam’s hooded executioner pulled the lever of the trapdoor in Baghdad Saturday morning, Washington’s secrets were safe. The shameless, outrageous, covert military support which the United States — and Britain — gave to Saddam for more than a decade remains the one terrible story which our presidents and prime ministers do not want the world to remember. And now Saddam, who knew the full extent of that Western support — given to him while he was perpetrating some of the worst atrocities since World War II — is dead.

Gone is the man who personally received the CIA’s help in destroying the Iraqi Communist Party. After Saddam seized power, US intelligence gave his minions the home addresses of Communists in Baghdad and other cities in an effort to destroy the Soviet Union’s influence in Iraq. Saddam’s mukhabarat visited every home, arrested the occupants and their families, and butchered the lot. Public hanging was for plotters; the Communists, their wives and children, were given special treatment — extreme torture before execution at Abu Ghraib. There is growing evidence across the Arab world that Saddam held a series of meetings with senior American officials prior to his invasion of Iran in 1980 — both he and the US administration believed that the Islamic Republic would collapse if Saddam sent his legions across the border — and the Pentagon was instructed to assist Iraq’s military machine by providing intelligence on the Iranian order of battle. One frosty day in 1987, not far from Cologne, I met the German arms dealer who initiated those first direct contacts between Washington and Baghdad — at America’s request.

Hehe, listen to the hypocrites howl–they’ll defend to the death the business owner’s “right” not to serve any minority he happens to despise or his “right” to fire an employee with a Kerry bumper sticker, but The Eagle which OWNS this blog–or at least runs it with the owner’s consent–can’t even delete the posts it doesn’t like.

Which is it, CONservatives, “ownership equals control” or are your principles negotiable as long as people do what you want?

Capn’ – I have to disagree. The Editors of WE Blog are obviously Stalinists. The photos are fakes – in reality, they wear fur hats and thick, black mustaches, including Rhonda.

If you carefully read between the lines of their editorials, you can clearly see that they are communists that are bent on taking over the Western World.

They look like they are up to SOMETHING. Brownlee, in particular, is almost certainly in possession of Nuck-U-Lar Weapons of Mass Destruction.

By night, they become dynamic CZARS of communism, leading subversive mass rallies in Marxist doctrine and dogma.

How could we have been so blind?

Yes, Mr. C., there is an excellant message in that tune.

You all missed it, this is Tome Petty’s best tune:

Tom Petty – Mary Jane’s Last Dance LyricsShe grew up in a Indiana town, Had a good lookin’ mama whonever was around. But she grew up tall and she grew uprightWith them Indiana boys on an Indiana night. Well she moved down here at the age of eighteen, Sheblew the boys away; was more than they’d seen. I wasintroduced and we both started groovin’ She said, “I digyou, baby, but I got to keep movin’ – on. Keep movin’ on.”Chorus:Last dance with Mary Jane, one moretime to kill the pain. I feel summer creepin’ in and I’mtired of this town again. Well I don’t know but I’vebeen told, you never slow down, you never grow old. I’mtired of screwin’ up, tired of goin’ down, Tired ofmyself, tired of this town, Oh my, my, oh hell yes – Honeyput on that party dress. Buy me a drink, sing me a song,Take me as I come . cause I can’t stay long. ChorusThere’s pigeons down on Market Square, She’s standing in her underwear. Lookin’ down from ahotel room, Nightfall will be coming soon. Oh my,my, oh hell yes, you got to put on that party dress. Itwas too cold to cry, when I woke up alone. I hit my lastnumber, I walked to the road. Chorushttp://www.seeklyrics.com/lyrics/Tom-Petty/Mary-Jane-s-Last-Dance.html

Quote of the Day (just for CF):

“…the word ‘Fascism’ is almost entirely meaningless. In conversation, of course, it is used even more wildly than in print. I have heard it applied to farmers, shopkeepers, Social Credit, corporal punishment, fox-hunting, bull-fighting, the 1922 Committee, the 1941 Committee, Kipling, Gandhi, Chiang Kai-Shek, homosexuality, Priestley’s broadcasts, Youth Hostels, astrology, women, dogs and I do not know what else … Except for the relatively small number of Fascist sympathisers, almost any English person would accept ‘bully’ as a synonym for ‘Fascist’. That is about as near to a definition as this much-abused word has come.” George Orwell

It was in either 1979, or ‘78 a local bar band in Haze, America did a cover of Petty’s “Refugee”. I went up to them afterward and asked where that song came from. They told me. The next day I went out and bought a vinyl version of _Damn the Torpedos_. Have been hooked ever since.

Oh, forgot to mention, in the Traveling Wilburys, The _Bob Dylan_ was also in the band.

Those who have falsely denounced the Eagle editorial board of being Communists should remember that it was just such false allegations as those that caused this country to blow the living daylights out of Iraq’s infrastructure and do in most of its leaders.

So you see, some good could come of even your false information if it got into the right hands.

Illegals to get Social Security?Contact: Brad Phillips, +1-202-776-0640, for TREA Senior Citizens League

WASHINGTON, Dec. 29 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — After numerous refusals over three and a half years, the Social Security Administration (SSA) has released the first known public copy of the U.S.-Mexico Social Security Totalization Agreement. The government was forced to make the disclosure in response to lawsuits filed under the Freedom of Information Act by TREA Senior Citizens League, a 1.2 million-member nonpartisan seniors advocacy group.

The Totalization Agreement could allow millions of illegal Mexican workers to draw billions of dollars from the U.S. Social Security Trust Fund.

The agreement between the U.S. and Mexico was signed in June 2004, and is awaiting President Bush’s signature. Once President Bush approves the agreement, which would be done without Congressional vote, either House of Congress would have 60 days to disapprove the agreement by voting to reject it.

    Liberalism and neurology

Free to choose?Dec 19th 2006From The Economist print edition

Modern neuroscience is eroding the idea of free will

IN THE late 1990s a previously blameless American began collecting child pornography and propositioning children. On the day before he was due to be sentenced to prison for his crimes, he had his brain scanned. He had a tumour. When it had been removed, his paedophilic tendencies went away. When it started growing back, they returned. When the regrowth was removed, they vanished again. Who then was the child abuser?

His case dramatically illustrates the challenge that modern neuroscience is beginning to pose to the idea of free will. The instinct of the reasonable observer is that organic changes of this sort somehow absolve the sufferer of the responsibility that would accrue to a child abuser whose paedophilia was congenital. But why? The chances are that the latter tendency is just as traceable to brain mechanics as the former; it is merely that no one has yet looked. Scientists have looked at anger and violence, though, and discovered genetic variations, expressed as concentrations of a particular messenger molecule in the brain, that are both congenital and predisposing to a violent temper. Where is free will in this case?
