Of gay sheep, virgin dragons

A couple of news stories this week that some will probably claim are part of the liberal media’s agenda to promote homosexuality and undermine fatherhood: An Oregon scientist has been taking undeserved heat for his research on why about 8 percent of rams seek sex exclusively with other rams instead of ewes, the New York Times reported. And a Komodo dragon in England had five babies (see photo) even though a male has never been near her — the first documented virgin birth by a Komodo. What’s next, a story about dogs and cats living together?

I understand you feel this might promote the acceptance of homosexuality as a lifestyle, Phillip, but it IS interesting – so why sweep it under the rug?

The analogy of ‘dogs and cats’ might not be appropriate since you are combining two separate species – not just mating habits within the same species.

The thing to remember is that life doesn’t always follow the rules we are led to believe it does as children. When we find that out – it shocks, disgusts, and sometimes alienates us.

Theoretically, it is possible for the female egg to split without benefit of sperm. Supposedly, that creates a female offspring every time – or so it was once explained to me.

I guess you could say females could ‘phase out’ males using that process – but no one has suggested we do that…..yet.

That’s just great, they have to kill the sheep to find out why they’re gay. I think I’m with Martina and PETA on this one.

    Nature is so, like, gay.

    Joe Williams,

Indeed. That PETA story was pretty bizarre.

“Now, two of its [PETA's] employees stand accused of tossing garbage bags full of euthanized cats and dogs into a Dumpster behind a Piggly Wiggly in Hertford County, 130 miles northeast of Raleigh.

Adria J. Hinkle and Andrew B. Cook, both of whom work in PETA’s Norfolk office, are charged with 21 counts each of animal cruelty, a felony that can carry prison time, along with littering and obtaining property by false pretenses.”

Where are the fundies to cry “unnatural because the bible SAYS so”?

I read that all reptiles have the ability to do the virgin birth thing. Could this be part of some evolutionary process?

Parthenogenesis is the “virgin birth” thing, and has been observed in so-called lower order animals for a long time. My understanding of the Kimodo Dragon story is that this is the first time such has been observed in captivity.

The sources of the response to the Oregon State University professor’s research on the sheep is, to put it mildly, remarkable.

The first thing I thought of when I read this topic story was that line from the Jurassic Park movie spoken by Jeff Goldblum – life will find a way.

Now about the gay sheep, I have no comment but ‘to each their own’?

    Ok

Last night at the meetup Phil said sometimes they put up threads that they just think need to be aired. Ya know? Just to get the news out.

And sometimes they put up threads to see what kind of reaction they will get.

I aint sure WHERE this one falls. I don’t know quite what to do with it.

I do not condone all of what PETA does, but they do some good things for animals. Why do the sheep need to be killed because this scientist wants to know “why”?

Why do the sheep need to be killed because this scientist wants to know “why”?

That’s science, delores. The unending quest for “Why?” People are passionate about knowledge, and 18 sheep a year is nothing to get ballistic about. Also, lamb kebab, yummmmmmmmmmm.

I doubt that this scientist has any interest in human applications…he’s just doing his own thing. But if research like this ever definitively demonstrated that homosexual tendencies are innate, I think the fundie crowd response would be deny or much like “…”’s response, “Well, we’re not slaves to our animal urges!” But that would still be admitting that the gay orientation is not necessarily a choice, and those born with it should fight against their urges BECAUSE THE BIBLE SAYS SO. Nevermind that not everyone follows the Bible.

Although, I do wonder if we’re little more than slaves to our animal urges. I attended a lecture by J. Craig Venter last night (the guy who invented shotgun sequencing and helped sequence the human genome) and he talked briefly about the HGP. We have so few genes, but so much so-called Junk DNA…who knows what’s in there.

More amazing is the level of diversity among bacteria in the ocean, but I’ll save that for another message board :)

Tara, I can honestly say I haven’t gone ballistic about this story. And yes it’s all done in the name of science, but it seems to me that science could be better served with better studies.

Tara, thank you for your post. I envy your ability to attend the lecture (really!); “Junk DNA” – I suspect there is much information to be gleaned therefrom.

When I lived on the farm, we had a gay ram- wouldn’t go near the ewes, but when we got another ram, he followed it around constantly. Also, years ago I read a paper by some guy who stated that he had found parthenogenesis in humans through DNA studies. He estimated about 12 cases a year worldwide. Unfortunately for the messiah freaks, it only produced females.

The operative fact in the article about Dr. Roselli is the phrase, “…supported by the National Institute of Health…”. How much money do you suppose NIH is endowing Oregon State for this project annually.

A friend, using the term loosely, is a tenured professor at the University of South Alabama and makes about $150,000 annually. He teachs ONE postgraduate course two hours a week every other semester, and bitchs constantly about its infringement on his “drinking” time. He brings in, as of 2004, $5.5 million to USA annually. He has been working on his “theory” for about 20 years and it actually works (sometimes) on rabbits with induced respiratory duress … sometimes it doesn’t. Oh well, the check’s in the mail, so who cares?
