Here’s an unintended consequence of the state’s new concealed-carry law for taxpayers to ponder: The Wichita school district purchased 1,340 no-gun signs for various indoor and outdoor use at its buildings, at an estimated cost of $7,500. The carry law exempts schools, of course, but “we figured it was just a proactive approach,” district spokeswoman Susan Arensman told The Eagle editorial board.

This seems like a frivolous expense by the school district. Those with permits know that guns are not allowed in school, those with guns and who do not have permits will not obey a law, let alone a mere sign. It’s just a “feel-good” placebo for the anti-gun people. The mere passage of a law, and posting of signs does nothing to stop a criminal.
Those signs have been around for a very long time.Is it because they want to make statement against law abiding citizens or is it because they are spending thrifty?OK – maybe it is just a reminder for the law abiding citizens not to carry their guns into the schools.Since the public school is funded by the state, maybe we need to get a line by line itemize statement on their spending, you know just figured it as a proactive approach.
I have to say for the most part, signs do little good. As has been pointed out, those with a CCP already know they can not have a weapon on them in a school. Those without would still have one on them if you put a billboard up outside of every school.
From my own personal experence I know that quite a few will ignore a sign then fane ignorance when questioned. “Oh I did not see the sign and the bright yellow ropes.I have to ask, “What part of a bright yellow rope and a bright, yellow sign with five simple English words on it confused you?”.
Yes this nothing more then a statement like the non-smoking signs were in the beginning. In this case it would be easier to have a sign where YOU are allowed to carry rather then one at every place you can not.
Cannot COncealed Carry in a school. The signs were an unneeded expense, and were just making a political statment.
There is a list of places were Concealed Carry is Suspended except for bona fide LEO persons. Bars, Courts, and schools are on the list.
The administrator wasted $7500 on signs of taxpayer money that aren not needed or required by law.
Nice going idiots!
oh no! not $7,500!
how in the world will the school districts be able to survive?!
oh yeah – b/c of the billion dollar tax increase that will be proposed soon by the governor.
thanks!
Well, we all know how well the speed limit signs work.
I suppose these signs will work just as well?
It has always been illegal to carry a gun onto school property. Why didn’t they have signs for people then?
You can say it is only $7,500 dollars but what you don’t see is the number of times they only spend $7,500 on something. The little amounts are what truly add up.
I have to reiterate what has been said: The sign is designed to inform the LEGAL bearer of a concealed firearm that this is a designated place where guns are not permitted. However, this sign was designed for one of the myriad establishments not covered by the CCH law. Anyone who is LEGALLY in posession of a concealed weapon has taken an 8 hour course covering specifically the rules and regulations, and demonstrating firearm proficiency. And they have been fleeced for $150 from the state, and paid approx. $150 for the 8 hour class (that’s a high figure, but most of the ones hosted at the local ranges fall there.) These legal handgun owners are terrified that they’ll carry their weapon in some way that will cost them the priviledge. And if someone is illegally carrying a handgun, I seriously doubt that since they’re violating state law, they’ll hesitate to violate another state law. I hope to all hell that we’re not using the tax revenues from the CCH registration fee to buy unnecessary signs.
I love the gun fearers– they are so afraid of LEGAL handguns and their owners that they forget to be afraid of ILLEGAL handguns and their owners.
I agree a waste of money
I like that the signs are posted at the schools.
A sign with a gun with a red lime through it seen everyday by the kids gets them the message “no guns” as part of their everyday thought. Not a bad thing at all.
JR,
Like was said JR, just a feel good measure for the anti gun crowd.
Nathan
I am NOT anti gun.
I am anti gun nut.
$5.60 per sign? Couldn’t the schools have negotiated a bulk rate? What are these things made out of anyway? Or better yet, why not have them made in a prison shop like license plates. They only have to be 8″ x 8″, a black gun with a red circle over it with a line thru it on a white back ground. Doesn’t even require words. What a waste!
How come the CC guru phil Journey can’t pass the background check?
He stated he doesn’t have one in the Eagle.
Justin Thurber did care about no “stinking signs”
Here’s another question to ponder:
It is currently illegal to have a gun within 1000 feet of a school. Am I going to have to deviate around schools in order to comply with the law?
I bet that guy holed up in New Hampshire right now also considers himself to be just a good gun totin American citizen too-.. as the police and feds surround his house.
Well, political mom, I don’t care much about some nutjob in New Hampshire. What makes me feel good, all over, is that there are MILLIONS of legally armed citizens all over the US. We’re packing, we’re legal. When the SHTF, we’re willing to fight. And there’s not a DAMN thing you can do about it. You can write your letters, wave signs, blog your fingers off. But it doesn’t mean a thing. Pretty empowering concept there, isn’t it?
Ian?
You wanted me to define “gun nut”?
Russel there would fit at least my idea of a gun nut. Read his post. They guy is ITCHITNG to play hero on the spot. There are others on this forum who post proudly of how they have ignored the law in the past and are damned determined to do so whenever it suits them. People like that are like a bomb waiting to go off. They do not make a good case for their right to carry a concealed weapon. People looking that hard for trouble will eventually find it. They may be a minority or maybe not. But they are there.Oh and Russel? There is recourse for responsible people to deal with the few nuts who will be conceal carrying. First bozo who flashes his pistol at me to settle a point and I will turn their butt in.
Besides. Think of this.
If a kid takes a gun to a school, he or she will be in all the more trouble for ignoring the sign. Good for the signs.
“First bozo who flashes his pistol at me to settle a point and I will turn their butt in.”
That would be a legally indefensible use of a handgun, and you should report it. But when a person gets a carry permit, they have passed a background check, have no criminal record, and have showed competence with a handgun plus knowledge of pertinent law. Why would a person go through all that just to get arrested waving a pistol at a citizen? No, if you see somebody brandishing a pistol in front of you, they won’t be legally carrying and you will be lucky to get away and report anything. As for those of us who might carry legally – you won’t even know we’re there. Believe me, we’ll be the least of your worries.
Bill”It is currently illegal to have a gun within 1000 feet of a school. Am I going to have to deviate around schools in order to comply with the law?”
This was ruled unconstitutional I believe.
I come back from the weekend and find the Eagle, AMAZINGLY, stirring the concealed carry hysteria – again. And JR falling for it – again.
Some things never change.
Damn – three weeks in, and, gosh, the blood is running . . . well, just where, exactly, JR?
And still no takers on my bet.
I thought not. The anti-rights crowd screams hysterically, but they know their fear-mongering is a lie. That’s why they won’t put their money where their mouth is.
BTW – if the school wanted to post the signs (unnecessary, as noted above), why not simply copy the one on the AG’s website and print them out. Same result, and much cheaper than $7,500. That would require the education education bureaucracy to demonstrate some common sense with taxpayer dollars. Not surprisingly, they didn’t.
What I said among other things is that the signs plant the idea “no guns” in young minds. And again, I say that is a good thing.
“What I said among other things is that the signs plant the idea “no guns” in young minds. And again, I say that is a good thing.”
And you say you are not anti-gun?
I will have to call BS on that one.
Why after all the training, money and rules, do we have to take out gun out and put inside our car (with the possiblty or being stolen)at every other restraurant ect. It should be all/everywhere or no where. Boycoat busineses with gun signs!!
