Mark your calendar for WE Blog meet-up

You’re invited to attend a meet-up of WE Bloggers from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 25, at The Eagle building, 820 E. Douglas (across the street from Old Town). We’ll probably have a format similar to our last meet-up — mostly mingle but also do questions and gripes and a short Eagle tour for anyone interested. Hope you can attend.

I would like to put faces and names with posters, although I’ve never been anyplace where appropriate attire includes bibs AND jackets that lace up the back. :-) So many here seem to have already met and made friendships it makes it intimidating for me, a newcomer. I’m more likely to sit back and listen than put in my two cents worth. I always figure someone else’s two cents is worth more than mine. Guess I can’t meet anyone without making the effort so I have it on the calendar.

I have just been to the one meet-up, the first one. It was interesting.

I think a good reason to go is that while you think you may know someone from reading what they write on this venue, the meet up can be a useful reminder that didn’t really know them.

Fleet can’t be what he writes. He can’t be so unidimensional.

So, WSClark, I encourage you to reconsider your decision. Remember, not long ago, you were inviting people from here to your house for Thanksgiving. Going to the meet-up will help you decide if that was sheer recklessness, or not a bad thing to do.

And Mr. Davis, I tend to take it a little personal when some one calls me a traitor to my country.

    WSC,

You weren’t a part of the blog yet when Nathan and I spent the better part of our time arguing with each other. I doubt we’ll ever agree on much of anything, but it was a good thing and a real pleasure to actually meet him and his dad Hank.

Meetups and blog posting are as different as night and day. We post things on here that we would NEVER consider saying to someone in person. At meetups we get to know each other as people and individuals, and we learn that, in many ways, we’re all the same, no matter what our politics, our sexual orientation, our religious beliefs, or our bank accounts.

Why miss out on meeting those who may become good friends AND most likely miss out on an enjoyable evening, because of one or two people you want to avoid?

I can understand WSC’s sentiment. But I think to choose to not meet people you’d probably like to avoid those few who make dumb statements here is short-sighted. But, hey, its a free country – well, more or less.

Well let’s try this Fleetwood. You have accused me of a capital crime, one that normal gets the convict executed via electric chair or hanging.

Apparently, you thought accusing me of treason was funny.

Ha ha ha, William Stephenson Clark is going to be hung for crimes against his country. Ha hah ha.

Whoopie! That’s a real knee slapper! A man, father, grandfather, good citizen that cares about the future of his country will be executed for treason.

    That is funny as hell!!!!!

    Disgusting.

    A capital crime.

You should be put to death.

Your “alleged” crime killed an innocent being.

    My “alleged” crime killed thousands.

Oh, now it’s not so funny?

    It’s not a joke now?

I have to say that it is sad that the very conservatives that advocated the worst for the people that had the courage to stand up against this mindless war are now trying to claim the high road.

We were the worst of the worst. Duke Cunningham wanted us to be lined up against the wall and shot.

Ann Coulter wanted us hung with the rest of the Gitmo prisoners.

Sean Hannity wanted us imprisoned for life at heard labor.

Bill O’Reilly wanted us sentenced to life watching reruns of the Factor.

And now the haters on the right want us to walk hand in hand with them down the road of bipartisan, skipping to the tune of “He’s a Jolly Good Fellow” as we sing the praises of George W Bush.

And the bastards wonder why we are angry.

Yeah, Walker, we were at the same concert I am betting. It was quite the experience as I recall.

The first concert I saw at the roundhouse was Jefferson Airplane, also circa 1970. They had just released their album _Volunteers of America_. Grace Slick was pregnant and giving the cops there all kinds of grief.

Yes, we’re getting old, but I think you are older than me.

Several weeks ago, I had a shooting war with Ian Santiago over his overt racist, anti-semitic attitudes. As most of you know, I am multi-cultural, including being partially Native American, Jewish, African-American, as well as Irish, English, German and Norweign.

At the time, none of the right-wingers here defended me because it was Santiago’s “right to free speech” to defame me, my family and my culture.

Now, those same right-wingers are taking offense because I am angry and firing back at them for accusing me of being a traitor.

So what is it, you right-wing hypocrits? Is it free speech or is it only free when they agree with your view of the world?

Or is it that you really do agree with Santiago but don’t have the balls to say so?

Funny, I have a lot more respect for Santiago for having the guts to express his opinion, however wrong, than I do for all of the right-wingers that have no guts.

If you’ve read my postings over time, you know where I stand re: Ian. He’s a racist pig. I give him exactly the attention he deserves – none at all.

A “shooting war” is exactly what he wants – it feeds his feeble ego. You were on the right side, certainly, but you played right into his hands.

I do know one, thing. All persons (even our resident racists, Ian and Ed) are entitled by basic courtesy. Even when they don’t deserve it. Perhaps most when they don’t deserve it.

And don’t give me that “free speech only whey they agree” BS. NO ONE is more “free speech for me, but not for thee” than the political left.

I’m neither Coulter, nor O’Reilly, nor Hannity, etc. etc. etc. I’ll stand by what I right, but I’ll take no responsibility for any others.

Ya want to get into a “shooting war” with me, you can try. But I won’t play. You’re welcome at the meet-up; please try to calm down, however. We may disagree, and that’s OK. I’ll be civil; but I won’t be intimidated. I’ll speak my mind, when I’m inclined to do so. I won’t shut up because you go off on a rant. And I’ll be responsible for what I say. Period.

Evidently WSClark that topic back in November still bothers you.

    Stop junking up the blog.”

Posted by: JM | November 20, 2006 at 08:23 PM

That was specifically addressed to Jew Boy and Ian. Of course, no one at the time you were posting a troll nicknamed “JewBoy.” Even JR made a comment about it.

“WS? Didn’t figure you for “Jew boy”. I won’t say who I THOUGHT it was, but trust me this is a complment.”Posted by: J R | November 20, 2006 at 10:19 PM

You and Ian were going after each other and as a result WE pulled both sets of posts.

I had no idea you that WSClark and JewBoy were the same person.

You revealed that later down the thread.

When you remarked that you were offended on me “getting you banned.”

    “Try it.”

I try it all the time, GM, and I am quite successful, however, it gets very tiresome to be called a traitor or a coward or anti-American or any other the other hundreds of insults that are tossed at me without losing my temper.

Most of my friends consider me to be the center of attention at parties and other get togethers. I am witty, charming and gracious. I include each and all into every conversation and I am respectful and decent to all. I go out of my way to be friendly and accepting and I rarely allow a converstation to become combative.

    That is my nature.

There is just one exception, however, and that is when I am accused of being a guilty of a crime against my country.

Now, I have to say, that not a single one of you right-wingers defeded me when JM and Fleet accused me of being a traitor.

    Not one.

And not one of you right-wingers defended my heritage when attacked by Santiago.

    Not one.

And not one of you right-wingers even raised a finger in my defense when I was attacked by KSGolfnut.

And then all of you got so excited that I brought the big guns out this evening. All of you screamed that I was being unfair, holding grudges, yada, yada, yada.

You folks on the right can dish it out. You folks on the right can watch while others dish it out. You folks on the right can remain silent while someone is defamed for race, color, creed, national originor sexual orientation….

But none of you can take it.

And that is why I would never spend a single moment in public with any of you.

    WS?

You let fleetwood get at you?

Hereabouts fleetwood is comic relief. You are getting pissed off about a clown.

And Ian pissed you off? Ian is Ian. He does not apologize to me or anyone else here for what he believes. He never has. That makes him a lot more honest than some of the bushbots.

Meet up huh? Well I’ll see.

A definite plus would be if WS was there.

Hey why don’t the editors say who they’d like to see there? Why don’t other bloggers say who they’d like to see there?

Bill the thing. Get the heavy hitters like kfg and TRACY and such? Hey these are folks who have a long trip. Make it worth it for them. That gets folks interested.

Ya don’t even have to serve pizza. Just sell the thing.

Why should anyone stand up in your defense to defend you from anyone in a blog?

Get it? It is a blog.

Now, if someone was picking on you in the street, I’d be right there defending you despite your personal views.

Evidently, your new to online discussions. I started with them way back in the early 1980s when Compuserve was still around. And yeah there was some real knotheads back then.

    Anyway, time for a shower…

  160. Joe Williams
    Posted January 11, 2007 at 11:30 pm | Permalink

Look man! I haven’t even read where they attack you, but for all on respects man, nobody shouldn’t have to defend you. You can do it for yourself.

I get slaughtered by leftist on here all the time who do nothing by name call and even get personal like XXX did. I stand up on my own. I don’t ask the other leftist or rightist on here to defend me or to condemn what others say.

I don’t even hardly read many of the posts or get on here every day, so I miss a lot.

I understand how angry you can get when it’s a personal attack. It’s happened to me and I responded with anger. But I do calm down and take a deep breath.

I also understand how you feel about not meeting up with people you don’t like. I personally don’t like Mr. Controversy. I find him a despicable human being. Nothing politically, just his character. If he was at the meet-up, I wouldn’t talk to him, but it wouldn’t deter me either.

I guess, J R, that being called a traitor repeatedly kind of gets to me.

I guess also that some of the other mindless attacks are bothersome as well.

It’s not that I can’t defend myself – it is the reaction that I get when I DO defend myself.

It seems that we are supposed to take the crap without defending. The right-winger are quick to cover their ample asses, but those on the left are supposed to be good little boys and girls.

I am really disgusted by a lot of these folks on the WE Blog. They can dish the shit but they get all up in arms when someone, especially some one on the left, fires back at them.

No insult seems to great for the right-wingers – traitor, coward, treason, terrorist, appeaser, doper, sissy, pussy, etc.

But when you call them out:

Oh, no, this is just a blog!

We really didn’t mean to suggest that you should be hung!

Why are you so sensative – everyone one the left is a coward!

    Yada, yada, yada.

I am from the city – a city boy that learned a long time ago that you don’t disrespect unless you have the cajones to back it up.

From what I have gather on this blog, the right wingers are severly lacking in cajones.

As I have said before, they can dish it out, but they can’t take it.

I have been called a coward and a traitor for the last time.

The list of hard-core right-winger that attack me regularly was generic in nature. I was listing the people that I would not want to visit with in a WE Blog Meet.

Not everyone listed has actually suggested that I be hung for treason as Fleet has, however, the right has generally attacked me for being anti-war.

If I have offended you, Raptor, I am sorry. It is hard to keep track of all the bloggers that have actually recommended my execution and those that just generally hate me for speaking my mind.

On other blog meetups, I know the regular’s names and they know mine- but it was a limited group of those we trusted.

    Interesting.

I guess I’m too old to understand why one would want to participate on a BLOG anonymously.

One of the reasons that the first BLOG meetup was organized was to put a face to the various names and to try and make the discourse more civil.

I don’t think liberals are mean, just wrong. I don’t think they are traitors, just confused. After each of the BLOG meetups the debate became more civil and enjoyable.

So…. if you are afraid to come under your own name… fine. what a way to live your life.

Where did I say that my appearance at a meetup had harmed me? I didn’t. I helped organize the biggest meet up so far.

I also did not loudly shout out my full real name.

That may be ok with a generic name like Hank Price. There’s some anonymity in that. Not your fault or anything you planned. But true.MY last name is extremely rare. A search on my first and last or middle and last name gets hits for one person. ME. Since dad died there are 5 people in Wichita with my last name. My mom, son, brother, and sister in law.

There are others here – sadly from both sides – who are less staright-forward. That does constitute a problem. However, I dount that they would come to a meetup.

I worked for a company once and I discovered how bigoted the corporate folks were when I overheard the regional manager and the VP talking and the VP informed her that there was too much “color” in the front office and he didn’t want to see that when he came back. Being who I am, I confronted my manager about what that meant. She of course denied it was a racist remark. I found another job and was gone before the VP came back. Are you saying that I was “simple-minded and gullible” for assuming last week that your post was bogus?

Haven’t you refused, in previous posts, to name your business? That is someone who obviously “prefer[s] anonymity”. And for obvious reasons, considering your posts.

Nah, I’d never “welch” on an invitation or offer. I’ll make this deal – if you show up at the Scotch while I’m having dinner on the night of the 25th and ask Sonny (the maitre de) for “KSGolfnut” – he’ll make sure you get to the bar for a drink on me. He’ll let me know you’re there. And, if I decide you’re worthy, I’ll come over and introduce myself.

I imagine Enema looks like a skinny little weasle with blonde hair, like a 5lb weight would kick his ass. The little yappy dog that trots alongside the big bulldog.

I picture Steven Davis looks like a computer guy, but not really geekish. Shorter, stout but not fat, and he wears oxford shirts, no tie.

Hank Price looks like my grandfather, white hair, square face, glasses, hard eyes, doesn’t like to laugh, white as the day is long. JM almost identical except more of a loner.

JR I think is really tall, proportionate, short hair, sandy blonde. He has a friendly face.

I think Mary looks like a professional lady, short hair, brown, bobbed, short. Kindof Sally fieldish.

That’s how I picture you guys on here. LOL I am terrible at doing this though, I can tell you that right now, but that’s who I see when I imagine all of you.

Scientists should be able to back up their opinions with facts.

For example, your opinion that Scripps did not properly calibrate their CO2 instruments was false — the calibration they had used was later slightly revised.

    Hey political mom?

I have met SOME of the folks you described. You NAILED Hank Price. Except the hair part. Both times I saw him, he was wearing a hat. So I don’t know about that.

Steven? I haven’t seen him in nearly a year. He aint short. He was kinda quiet.

Mary? Blonde hair. The rest of the description? Close.

Mary I knew at the first meet up right off.

    And me? Well…..

“I picture Steven Davis looks like a computer guy, but not really geekish. Shorter, stout but not fat, and he wears oxford shirts, no tie.”

Actually, I aspire to be a geek or a dweb (just kidding). I am not short. Played H.S. basketball many years ago.

I refuse to wear ties, except at funerals. I have never worn an oxford shirt that I can recall. I did wear argyle sweaters in college until people started asking me if I read Esquire magazine and voted Republican. I have seldom done the first and less often did the latter.

“Hank Price looks like my grandfather, white hair, square face, glasses, hard eyes, doesn’t like to laugh, white as the day is long.”

Almost an exact description of me! Except, I might only be old enough to be your father. And I’m actually almost bald although what hair I have is gray. And then the part about not liking to laugh, I enjoy life and laugh a lot. Then there is the comment about my eyes, they are soft with laugh lines. And what did you mean by white? I am caucasion, and pretty white except in the spring, summer and fall. I ride horses a lot, drive horses a lot, train sheep dogs for myself and several friends. I spend a lot of time outside and usually spend an average of two weeks each year in the Carribean. Not real tan, but not white.

Other than the noted exceptions, you have me described exactly!

I agree, I’ve never seen Hank without a smile on his face, he loves to laugh…as for me, my hair is no longer blonde, but I do keep it sort of short, and I’m not petite and cute like Sally Field, either :(

After reading through these posts, another to add to the “attending” column is JWink. Another “likely attending” may be Proudman – the libertarian. But, if he has to ask for directions on how to get the Eagle building, he might not make it. (joke – admittedly a pathetic one)

I also believe that Fleetwood is not attending. That will disappoint his many fans…

  350. Posted January 17, 2007 at 8:19 pm | Permalink

Mary is right that Sally Field is cute. She will play Abby’s mother on ER sometimes and though she is getting up there in years she has retained a certain “cuteness” – some people are just lucky that way, I guess.
