Do ‘Sebelius’ and ‘daring’ go together?

Setting up Gov. Kathleen Sebelius’ fifth State of the State speech tonight, the Kansas City Star’s Steve Kraske wrote, "On that night we’ll find out something interesting: Is she a Clintonesque incrementalist who nibbles at the edges of big issues with important, yet relatively small, policy proposals? Or can she make a pitch for something grander — a signature issue, if you will — with a daring call for a sweeping policy initiative? Two areas, it seems to me, are fertile ground: health care and energy policy." Our Sunday editorial encouraged the guv not to hold back, either, but we’re not holding our breath.

An old friend (and darn good chess player) always gave me this good advice:”When in doubt, push a pawn.”

That would explain the Gov’s realtionship with the Ks. House Dems. To her they are her little pawns she pushes around after she has cleared her policy positions with the Republicans.

Well, its 7:30 PM … should I continue to listen to Gov. Kathleen Sebelius spin and bob her “vision” for Kansas? Or should I switch to channel 5 and listen to very knowledgable and hard-hitting James Barfield talk about Wichita’s political future?

Uhhh, I think I will switch to Mr. Barfield’s call-in show … much more interesting.

I hope you all are eating your words – health insurance for all Kansans – I call that a bold and daring proposal.

Well, with four comments on one thread about governor leadership and five on another, I hardly think she is inspiring anyone to do anything but yawn.

I support the proposal for universal health care coverage. There are some seemingly workable models out there that could be made to work for ks.

But… I dont hear her making a case that it can work. Only a lame proposal that will be shut down by her fellow republicans. :)

She sure has no ability to make anyone in Kansas believe anything is going to happen in the years between now and her next run for office, no matter what the office.

…and did she say on freakin’ WORD about the biggest issue facing Kansas?

    Water?

I didnt see the speech, but I’m willing to bet a small amount that NOT ONE WORD about water was spoken.

Leadership at it’s finest. I guess that is why we call her governor leadership.

I wonder what all those newly insured people will drink?

Or will she let them eat cake?

    hee hee hee hee hee

I guess she is forward thinking in that after she kisses Steve Miller’s ass, Glenn Staab’s and John Bird’s collective behinds and lets the new coal fired generating plant progress…

…she knows there will be lots of health problems not far behind when Holcomb fires up.

Yep. Maybe she is more forward thinking than we give her credit.

Maybe along with fillin’ yer canteens, you ought to be shopping for resperators and sunscreen as well….

    hehehehehehehehehehehehehehe

This “bold and daring proposal” for universal health coverage is a great thing.

But governor leadership is known for throwing a sop to keep her detractors on the reservation and then letting it land with a thud.

My money is on that happening with this “bold and daring proposal”. And she will try to blame it on the republicans, when she and hers will be half hearted about it at best.

Wouldnt want to upset the business community, dontcha know.

BTW, have we ever SEEN the executive order governor leadership promised in 04? You know the sop she threw to the gay community when we wanted her support on the hate amendment?

She promised, at Washington Days, through Joyce Allegrucci, that she would issue an executive order adding sexual orientation to the non-descrimiation policies in state government.

Of course, we were cautioned, she would do it AFTER the 04 election. Real political leadership there. Real courage.

I dont think that executive order has been done to this date. Too afraid of terry, joe and fred?

Yet another “grand proposal” that died with a whimper and not a bang.

Maybe she is more clintesque than we think. Political opportunism at its finest. But it worked. The good little gays didnt make any fuss.

    Jesus wept. Governor leadership indeed.

And I dont hear the progressive community calling her on it….

Ok so in reading the text of governor leadership’s speech, I see that she did indeed mention water.

    Once.

“Our continued dependence on imported oil threatens our economy and our national security of this we have no doubt. But there also can be no doubt that our current energy sources are causing dramatic, even dangerous changes to our climate. For a state like Kansas, where a major segment of our economy relies on predictable weather, and where our entire population relies on a stable water supply, this has real consequences.”

    WTF does THAT mean?

And what does she intend to do about the consequences of NOT having a “stable water supply”?

Third rail. She’s gonna run out the clock on water just like the preznit is running out the clock on iraq.

    And the republicans?

hehehehehe. Steve Morris, from one of the dryer areas of the state, didnt mention water once.

    Not even once.

I guess we’ll all just wait for, um WHAT? to solve our looming water crisis?

    2008? 2010? 2012?

    For hell to freeze over?
