In a recent commentary in the Wall Street Journal, author Scott Turow (in photo) offered a novel idea about resolving the ongoing debate over how long to keep U.S. troops in Iraq: “Why don’t we ask the people of Iraq what they think?”
He pointed out that “if the remaining rationale for our presence in Iraq hinges on our commitment to democracy there, what possible excuse can we have for not letting the Iraqis make the ultimate choice about our occupation? If a solid majority throughout the country wants us out, then we can leave knowing that we are not deserting a people eager for our presence.”
He proposed a national plebiscite to determine whether Iraqis want us to stay for the long haul or to leave over the near term. Polls indicate a large majority of Iraqis want us gone. If true, why not honor their wishes, realizing that the Iraqis will and should have the largest say in the future direction of their country?

Because that would make sense, and anything remotely associated with the Gubmint ™ Can. Not. Make. Sense.
I have never understood , given the deep seated hatred between the Sunnis and the Shites, how training and arming more of them is going to result in anything other than a larger ,better trained and armed group to further continue the killing on a even larger scale!
How does this plan accomplish anything?
gster,It accomplishes chaos, carnage, and civil war quite well, thank you.
This argument won’t work for the conservative supporters of the war. They will just point out that there was Japanese opposition to occupation and look how that worked out.
If we pull out, we have to accept the consequences of what we did and not justify them with meaningless polls. We were wrong. We have to accept that and start fixing the mentality that got us there in the first place.
No matter what we do , or don’t do, this matter will only be resolved when there is a winner and a loser, after the civil war.
And then the cycle begins anew!(Fade to background- cue in “Won’t Get Fooled Again”- fade out.)
I knew I liked Turow !! But, as justme said, “(It won’t fly because -ed.) it makes sense.” Sad….but true.
Joe Galloway gets this oh, so right. The excerpt below will be lost on the 30% of the population for whom GWB isn’t a total psychopath. But no matter. The rest of us know.

**********************************”Let’s get a few more things straight right now.
There’s no victory waiting for President Bush in Iraq, and nothing that his father’s friends say or do can save him from an ignominious end to his presidency in two years and two months, or from the judgment of history.
There will be no convenient and successful negotiation of a “decent interval” with our enemies Iran and Syria to cover our withdrawal from a war that we should never have started.
There can be no successful Vietnamization in Iraq – standing up more and better Iraqi army and police units and handing control over to them – when all we’re doing is arming and training more recruits for the civil war that clogs the streets of Baghdad with the corpses of the victims of a Sunni-Shia bloodbath.
What we need to do is what none of the commissions and their reports dared to suggest: Begin withdrawing American forces from Iraq right now. Not in 2008. Not after the American death toll has crossed 5,000. Not just in time for a presidential election.
If you worry about the future of Iraq, don’t. It will remain what it’s always been: a violent, angry land of warring tribes only occasionally beaten and bludgeoned into submission by a homegrown despot like Saddam Hussein.
If you worry about added turmoil and instability in the Middle East, pull some of those departing American forces back to Kuwait and leave them there on standby. Then redirect thought, energy and effort into salvaging Afghanistan, finding Osama bin Laden, saving Lebanon, negotiating peace between Israel and its enemies, rebuilding the U.S. Army and Marine Corps and, oh yes, ending the uncivil war between Republicans and Democrats.
There may be 50 ways to leave your lover, but there’s only one way to leave Iraq: Load our people up on their trucks and tank transporters and Bradleys and Humvees and head for the border. Now.”
Turow’s idea makes sense to me, so long as the Iraqi government agrees to be bound thereby. If Iraq is, as the President says, a sovereign nation, and if the government has a plebiscite reflecting a strong desire by the Iraqi people that the U.S. leave, then under what pretense would we remain?
Polls have shown that the vast majority of Iraqis want us out. I suspect an election would confirm that.
Ultimately we succeeded in winning the war in Vietnam — by getting kicked out. Look, they’re prosperous, they’re peaceful, they’re sovereign. That meets Bush’s definition of “winning.”
I don’t normally watch “reality TV” – not my cup of tea so to speak. However, I did watch one episode of the Great Race – took place in VietNam. I was struck by the fact that I was watching a country with at least enough freedom of movement etc that the show could be shot there. Sure beats the heck out of US-occupied Iraq!
Yeah, Ben, I saw that one, too. In my case, all I can figure out is that is must have been a “reallllly bad football game” on that Sunday night … but your point cuts right to the heart of the matter. Probably Cleveland v. Cincinnatti
Vietnam is a beautiful country. I know someone who fought there and has returned since then. He sent me a link to his photos. I’ve lost it since then, or I’d share.
Ben & rm, is that the one where they were making mud bricks?
Is that the one where they are riding tiny motor scooter, hauling dead pigs and giant baskets of flowers? The place could be a shit hole in real life.
I never said it was a paradise; but the fact that these guys could do their race says something. i don’t recall Great Race going through Baghdad or Kabul.
Bush will tell them whe it’s time to ask us to leave, first he’s got to try out the new “New Way Forward” (or was that “No Way Forward”) slogan on his stooges. I knew Bush would get the message that it was time to change course on the “Stay The Course” sound bite, after the ISG told him “Stay The Course” isn’t working!
There is no good exit strategy for Iraq because the anti war Americans will never allow there to be one. Because there is no P.C. way of leaving right now, it will not occur until a Dem takes the White House. At that time the Dem president will be lauded for fixing the mess that the Republicans (Bush) made.
I know you dems on this blog will never agree or even look objectively at my post.
The biggest problem that occured with this war started back in 2000 when Bush was elected. Sooooo many of the left didn’t agree with the election so decided right then and there that NO MATTER WHAT, Bush would NEVER be right about anything. How long did it take for the dems to start yelling about Bush not doing enough in the 9 months he had between when he was sworn in and 9-11. All they said was that it happened on his watch so under no circumstances could the blame be placed anywhere else. NEVER MIND that Clinton had 7 YEARS to deal with OBL or Al Quida. Bush was at fault, THE END.
When it comes to Iraq, the exact same thing happened. Anything Bush tried to point out to explain where Saddam fit in the terrorist picture. That he had supported and funded Islamic terrrorism throughout the world but mainly in Palestine. Of the brutality to his own people. Of the known WMD’s that EVERYBODY believed he had (yes, even Bill and Hillary), none of this mattered, it was Bush bringing it up SO it must be wrong.
If Saddam had gassed another couple of thousand of his own people in say 1995, what would have been your reaction had Bill said we need to go in there and remove Saddam from power. He is committing genocide on his own people. Answer that question truthfully to yourself. Of course some of the Republicans of Congress would have been in an uproar simply because it was a Dem asking for it. But I guarantee ALOT of the Republicans in the U.S. would have backed him up, because he is the president and we believe he was doing what he felt he needed to to protect America and to stop this thug. You would not have seen the same number of anti-clinton that you see now with Bush. The republican Americans don’t knock down their President, no matter what party, in war time. They understand that whenever American troops are put in harms way by ANY president, you do not give aid and comfort to the enemy by bad mouthing your own country or president.
Have you happen to notice that it was fairly silent after this last election. I didn’t see any rallies or constant on and on about how the Dems stole the election. The Dems tampered with the ballots. The Dems prevented people from voting. The Dems,(fill in the blank, I’m sure you remember your own chants from back in 2000 and 2004.)
When you bad mouth your country and your president during a time of war YOU ARE giving aid and comfort to the enemy.Take ol Jane Fonda. Do you really think that the North Vietnamese and the Vietcong, weren’t giggling with delight when she went over there. You don’t think she had something to do with extending the war.The North Vietnamese government propaganda machine had to have been going haywire. Here is the daughter of one of our enemies most beloved actors (at the time) climbing up all over our anti-air guns and laughing and giggling how wonderful these guns were because they were shooting down the lousy Americans.NO propagandist in North Vietnam could have even thought about writing something like that up, not in their wildest dreams. They saw that public opinion was against the war. They saw that Americans, Americans… were calling their own soldiers, baby killers and spitting on them. They saw that the Americans didn’t care if the people of South Vietnam wanted to live free. The American public didn’t care that the South Vietnamese didn’t want to be controled by the Communists, even after seeing everything that was going on in Eastern Europe under communism. The walls, the fences, the minefields to keep people IN. It didn’t matter that not 6-7 years prior, the American Democrat President Kennedy said to the entire world, that the U.S. would bare ANY burden, no matter what, to allow people to live in freedom and liberty and peace. The North Vietnamese and Vietcong KNEW that the longer we drag this out, the longer public opinion (thus the congress) dictated how this war was to be fought, they knew they would have victory.
This is EXACTLY what the radical islamists are seeing right now. The exact same thing. The Amerian Dems had decided that no matter what Bush was trying to accomplish they would not support it. This FORCED Bush to fight a P.C. war. Even if we had gone in with 500,000 troops, the dems in this country would have said, why just look how many of our boys he is sending over to get killed. If he had spent 60 days leveling Iraq so that there would be even less resistance to our troops on the ground and the occupation would have gone much smoother due to Iraqis knowing that they would starve without the Americans, because the first thing we would have done in a “real war” would have been to close the borders so that NOTHING got in or got out. The dems would have been screaming how we were killing only woman and children with all the bombing. Every civilian killed would have been another mark against Bush. Even if the civilian casualties would have been large at the begining, once the occupation began it would have dropped considerably. But again, Bush had to fight a P.C. war. All the dems were screaming, Europe’s not with us, Europe’s not with us, we shouldn’t do anything without Europe. Do you really think Europe cares if we had been attacked again after 9-11. We would have gotten the same, oh you poor people. But they would have just kept on with the Oh, you just need to figure out what radical islam has against the U.S. and stop doing it, NO MATTER WHAT. Besides, Saddam has been giving us PLENTY of money and oil throughout the whole Oil for Food program, which was brokered by Europe. Yet the Dems didn’t want to look into that.
The dems are applauding the ISG findings, because they are against Bush. Doesn’t matter that they think we need to sit down with Iran and Syria and seek their advice. Doesn’t matter that the biggest thing Iran wants is to see the Jews extinct. Doesn’t matter that Iran would want any and all movies coming out of Hollywood to be shut down. Doesn’t matter that they would behead Paris Hilton or Lindsey Lohan or Madonna for showing their bodies.I thought you Dems liked the idea of gay marriage and everyone should have the right to do what they want. That every girl 13 and over should be allowed to have a partial birth abortion. Do you really think that Iran and Syria wouldn’t have a thing or two to say about that??? Remember the Taliban, you think the Iranian Mullahs are any nicer???It was amazing to me when the ex-president of Iran was recently invited to speak at Harvard. He explained that there was no problem with Homosexuality in Iran, because as soon as it was found out, the persons were beheaded according to Shia law, and NO ONE got up and left. NO ONE got up and yelled at the ex-president about the homosexuals rights. NO ONE yelled at the ex-president that that wasn’t right, that he should allow his citizens to do what ever they wanted. NO ONE jumped up and asked if Amnesty International knew about this. But boy, let some idiot soldiers build a human pyramid of naked guys, or put a leash on one or allow a dog to bark at a prisoner and the Dems are SCREAMING torture and to call Amnesty International and to call Jimmy Carter and to march against our president for allowing such horrible, disgusting, ruthless, barbaric TORTURE to take place. I’m guessing what Uday and Husay were doing was the Dems idea of just “fraternity pranks.”Thanks to the Dems we are going to lose this war. We will be struck again. More Americans will die. We may even be forced to abandon Israel. Hopefully they will be able to use their nukes on Iran and Syria before their nukes completely take out Israel. I only hope that the Jews in American will be allowed to survive, mainly since my wife is one.America is going to lose so much more than just this war. We can’t even take our eyes off our cell phones, or MP3 players, or American Idol long enough to care or see what is going on around us or what our enemies REALLY want to accomplish. Do you really see this country being willing to make the sacrifices that would be needed against this global war of radical islam. As long as all future wars will either not be fought because we are cowards or appeasers or we will continue to insist on a P.C. war, this country cannot stand and WILL FALL!
Gene Raston<—-mopping floor, keyboard, and screen.
Gene – half the ISG was Republican.
Outstanding post Gene.
When you’re ranting, facts are entirely optional!
Probably counter-productive besides.
Gene needs to put the crack pipe down and come up for air. Maybe he can’t because it’s the dems fault?
Since when is anything blogged, reported on radio, tv, internet, newspaper have to do with facts?Opinion pieces is what all the media is today. His opinions are as valid and ring true as anything reported about the President “lying to the American people about WMD’s” for instance.
I think you have a Fox overdose- slowly put down the remote and look out the window for awhile. It will get better!Facts are NOT our enemy.
Well then show me where some are reported; or better yet why don’t you provide some that would disprove some of Gene’s statements:

Oh and lesson #1, public opinion polls are not facts.
Gene, when you move out of La-La Land and back into the real world, we’ll consider your comments objectively. Until then… Go have a beer with Paul Rossell. You’ll hear exactly what you want to do, and the two of you can pat each other on the back for a job well done.

• Life in IraqSuicide attacks and murders due to sectarian conflict continue around Iraq. See how residents live their lives amid the attacks.
Updated: 12:56 p.m. CT Dec 11, 2006WHITE HOUSE – The White House is flatly denying a report that key Shiite leaders are maneuvering to oust Iraq’s prime minister.
Press Secretary Tony Snow tells reporters there’s no move afoot to “dump” Nouri al-Maliki.
Asked what’s wrong in the story, Snow said, “Basically, everything.”
Snow adds the president has full confidence in al-Maliki. Earlier this month, at a meeting in Jordan, Bush called al-Maliki “the right man for Iraq”.
New alliance could be Shiite ledHowever, according to Iraqi lawmakers involved, major partners in Iraq’s governing coalition are in behind-the-scenes talks to oust Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki amid discontent over his failure to quell raging violence.
The talks are aimed at forming a new parliamentary bloc that would seek to replace the current government and that would likely exclude supporters of the radical Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, who is a vehement opponent of the U.S. military presence.
The new alliance would be led by senior Shiite politician Abdul-Aziz al-Hakim, who met with President Bush last week. Al-Hakim, however, was not expected to be the next prime minister because he prefers the role of powerbroker, staying above the grinding day-to-day running of the country. ”

Gene & Ben: JESUS CHRIST, pals, take a breath, guys.
When post are that long, I just wheel on by!
steve, rm – I screwed up when I cut/pasted mine; should have gone via MSWord and edited out all those birthdays etc. Looking at it reminds me of reading much of the Old testament with all the begats.
“In a question asked of half the adults surveyed by USA Today/Gallup, a record high 62 percent said the war in Iraq wasn’t “worth it,” and a record low 16 percent said the United States was winning. That is less than half the 40 percent who held that view a year ago, the newspaper said.”

The “stay and win” tactic looks to be increasingly unpopular.
Also from the above article the Baker/Hamilton recommendations of involving Syria & Iran, as well as helping with a Palestine/Israel peace accord is favored by the majority. With such strong public positions, one can only hope that other Repubs will start putting the pressure on Bush, et al. – he can respond appropriately to such pressure, it just isn’t his natural inclination.
I see the White House has announced that they will wait until after X-mas to announce the”New Plan Forward”.Spokesman Tony Snow denied the delay was due to waiting to consult with Santa Claus!
Sure, and then there’s Easter Bunny, Tickle Me Elmo,……..
Wonder if the delay is connected, in any way, with the contents of the other three “reports” being received not being as supportive as anticipated? I’ve no idea, just wondering.
Vaughn,
Given this administration’s history, that is an entirely reasonable speculation.
What has always been troubling to me is that this administration is always willing to delay. The words “urgent”, “emergency”, “deteriorating”, and etc. are not in the Bush lexicon.
I hope both representatives from both parties are able to exert enough pressure to get Bush to act.
Mean Gene–
Congratulations on the “idiot post of the week.”
There are far too many idiocies in that post for any sane person to take one at a time, but at the heart of it is one big idiocy–that America is so vast and powerful, that just what we THINK changes world politics.
Jane Fonda did something stupid with her little propaganda swing through beautiful North Vietnam many decades ago.
But get an effing clue–the war was already lost long before she went on her “aid to the commies” tour.
You confuse cause and effect. Her visit was not the cause of American lack of resolve–it was the effect. She was only acting out (badly, misguidedly) what any sentient being already knew by the early 70’s. We weren’t going to win this thing.
You right-wingers think that simply BELIEVING something strongly enough makes it happen.
Did the Nazis not BELIEVE in Hitler enough? Did the Soviets not BELIEVE in communism enough? The Imperial Japanese? Napoleon? The Romans? The Greeks?
We are a powerful country, probably more powerful in sheer firepower than any country in the history of the world.
But that doesn’t mean that if all Americans back Bush’s immoral war based on a pack of lies, a quagmire becomes an oasis.
Iraq is getting decided by the Iraqis. What Gene Ralston in Wichita, Kansas THINKS doesn’t make a damn bit of difference in Baghdad or Ramadi.
And it’s the height of arrogance to think that it does . . .
Well first off Cappy, I didn’t say that Jane Fondas visit “lost” the war. I stated that it extended it.But lets try and put it in logic perhaps you’ll understand. Say for instance that you and Mike Tyson are to box. If you make it through 10 rounds, you are declared the heavyweight champ of the world, you get a check for 6.7 billion dollars, all disease in the world will be eradicated and no puppies will ever die, whatever. Every person in the place is pulling for you.
You don’t have to knock Tyson out all you have to do is survive and still be standing there at the end of the 10th round. You step in. About the 6th round you’re starting to get woozy. End of 7 your teetering. At the end of the 8th, only a stiff breeze is keeping you standing, you’ve got the towel in your hand, seriously thinking of throwing it in. NOW all of a sudden the crowd jumps to its feet, rushes the ring and ties both of tysons arms back. At the start of the 9th round, you know Tyson will eventually get his arms free and finish you, but you just don’t know when. It might be in 3 minutes or it might be 6 minutes, all you need to win the fight.
What do you do?
Do you continue to stand there in the ring and cross your fingers and hope for the next 6 minutes or do you go ahead and throw in the towel, so that Tyson doesn’t have to bruise his knuckles anymore on your head.
This is what happened in Vietnam. Cronkite and Fonda extended the war. Of course the public being against the war was seen by our enemies. What you don’t think they pick up a newspaper? They tied our hands behind our backs. The congress decided how we would fight, not the Generals. We never even got the chance to FORCE Vietnam to the peace table and at least possibly get a truce and maybe split up the country ala Korea. So at least half the country got to live in peace and prosperity. So that maybe the North would have seen the opportunities that were available in the South that maybe they would rise up and say, we want what our brothers have. The U.S. NEVER lost a battle, but the public, spitting on our soldiers, calling them names, dancing on their anti air guns, that lost us the war.
When our weakness is shown, our enemies are EMBOLDENED.
The Dems speak of how we need to get everyone together and find out what the problem is.
Lets look at a little history shall we.
Jimmy (worst president ever) Carter has the Shah thrown out and radical islam is put in power. They take our citizens hostage. Nothing happens.
Beirut, our Marines are killed, nothing happens.
The first WTC bombing occurs. A couple of guys go to jail. Nothing else happens.
A terrorist is stopped coming into the U.S. with plans to bomb LAX. He goes to jail, nothing else happens.
Somali warlords (some muslim) kill U.S. Soldiers, while trying to bring the country food and some type of order. We withdrawl, nothing happens.
The russians invade afghanistan. We provide weapons and training to muslims so that they can fight the Russians and stand a chance.
The U.S.S Cole was attacked and sailors killed. Nothing happens.
OBL issues his fatwa, saying he will kill Americans. We do nothing.
We were attacked on 9-11. Why? What had we done other than nothing and supporting Israel.
Clinton tried to broker a deal between Israel and Palestine. Convinced Israel that if they only did this and this and this and this and concession that and that and that, it will all be okay. Palestine, you don’t have to do anything but recgonize Israel. How’d that work out.
I ask again, WHY were we attacked???
The simple and truthful answer is that we showed weakness. The radical islamists saw this in Vietnam. They saw it in our fail to respond to each and every provacation. They saw it when all the Dems stated that we are not behind our president. We don’t care that he is trying to protect our country, we are against our president.
Our news and nightshows are full of people making fun of our president and saying how stupid he is.They see it when we care more about Dancing with the Stars, then what the young muslims are doing in Europe.
They see it when Emams are allowed to pull all kinds of crap on an airline and we bend over backwards apologizing.
They see it when one bombing in Spain will affect their election.
They see it, when a supposed advisory group to the president says you must sit down and seek advice to your problems from those that cause your problems.
They see it when U.S. news programs will show and declare that the U.S. putting underwear on the heads of their captives and putting leashes on them is tantamont to the worse possible torture, while our enemies behead and mutilate and burn their captives and hang them from a bridge, or drag their naked corpses through the street.
They see it when U.S. new programs will air their own propaganda showing a U.S. Soldier being shot by a sniper.
They see it when certain members of congress compare our soldiers to those of the S.S, Pol Pot or KGB.
They see it when certain members of congress from Massachusetts declares that we are in a quagmire and cannot win.
OH YEAH, Capn America, this does NOTHING for our enemies. This is all just Republican tripe.
I just hope you remember these postings one day soon when you’re on your prayer rug 5 times a day, instead of finding out what Paris Hilton is up to.
