A dropped cell phone led to the 17-year-old who had vandalized one Wichita man’s inflatable Christmas decorations last week — and to an apology. But many other area residents won’t be so lucky, finding their efforts to brighten their neighborhoods this Christmas season not only unappreciated but trashed. Also, is it just us, or have others noticed that area drivers and shoppers have been unduly rude ever since Thanksgiving? And one more ringing cell phone during a holiday concert and we’ll scream. May the remaining days of the season of joy find fewer of us acting like jerks.

Oh, the poor baby apologized. That makes it all better….NOT! Too bad the home owner didn’t catch the little scumbag in the act and kick his ass.
Nothing like the caught apology. And if his cell phone hadn’t dropped on the home owners lawn?Miller is showing the true spirit of the season in his forgiveness.
Yeah, the ‘caught’ apology appears to be too common these days.
Concerning drivers, the drivers of all ilk in Wichita are rude and dangerous 24/7 throughout the year.
There are maybe less than 1 percent I actually consider good drivers and that includes obeying the traffic laws.
Where the hell have you been Rhonda? People are like this every year, and every day as JM points out. Rudeness is the rule not the exception. All goes to prove my point that this stupid holiday is nothing more than a public bailout of the corporations. It is about selfishness and not a time to celebrate the birth of jesus. But don’t tell the religious right that, I don’t want to spoil their shopping spree.
Having driven in every major city in this country (as well as many, many mid sized cities) it appears to me (opinion only, not to be offered as fact) that Wichita drivers are not really mean or agressive..they are just clueless. I have witnessed horrible tailgaters in Altanta and Cleveland; obnoxiously aggressive drivers of NY and Boston. My guess is that many people drive like Wichita is still a small town..and they are pretty much clueless to the fact there are OTHER cars on the road.
As far as vandalism..that is inexcusable. Was at the Genesis Christmas party last night…saw one young jerk throw some chairs and break a door in his angry exit. Saw him a while later…in handcuffs with a few WPD officers around him. He didn’t appear quite as full of himself at that moment. Gotta love it! Wish they could catch more of these angry punks who have nothing better to do than destroy property belonging to others.
It could be just me but I am thinking there is a significant decrease in the number of houses with lights this year. Anybody else notice that? I know I don’t put out near the lights I used to.
lol I’m one of the good drivers. It is trememdous fun really.
I watch the lights. If I think the next one is about to go red, I get off the gas and coast. This has the effect of REALLY pissing off some of the people behind me. More than once I’ve had people angrily whip around me. ONCE I even rolled up next to one at the red light, looked over and said, “Hey congratulations! You beat me to a complete stop!”
heh heh
Why is it when you’re shopping in the store, that people just think they can stop and chat in the busy hallways? I am gonna end up with shopping cart rage.
Just last Friday morning, a friend of mine was driving in the southwest part of town. He saw a car signalling and preparing to make left turn in front of him. Knowing the guy had time to make his left turn safely, he still, out of courtesy and good defensive driving, let off his accelerator to coast and give the guy a couple of extra seconds to complete his turn. What happened next? The fucking moron behind him slams into him at about 40 mph.!!
Raptor’s right on this one … most Wichita drivers are just clueless or too damned busy spilling coffee, talking on their cell phones, etc. It hard to keep your eyes on the road with your head up your ass folks.
I think the general level of rudeness of people has been increasing for the past few years. Whether it is Christmas or not. But then think about it. We have Christians who are crying persecution because someone wishes them Happy Holidays instead of Merry Christmas. Now how arrogant is that?
We have lost any sense of common courtesy and even less patience. But look at the so-called moral leaders – politicians, religous leaders, CEO’s, radio hosts are all caught lying, cheating, stealing, sent to rehab and etc. No one is held accountable anymore so why are we surprised at some 17-yr old destroying Christmas decorations?
“shopping cart rage”
Hell, have a little patience.
I agree rm and raptor – driving SKILL is lacking. I’ll take an arrogant LA driver with skill any day over a totally unaware cell-phone talker. I know how to anticipate what the LA driver does; I don’t have that with too many on the roads here.
I especially have to chuckle at the ones doing 50 in the left lane on Kellogg who get upset because I won’t get out of their way when they come to their exit. They shouldn’t be in the left lane if they are (a) going slow and (b) taking an exit soon.
I can tell you from being at a complete stop and rear ended at 50 mph 18 months ago that bad driving isn’t exclusive to Wichita either. It’s an epidemic these days it seems.
Damn, KIA, and you’re all right? Did you have your seal belt on? I’d bet you did, but that’s a hell of a wallop. BTW, how was the party last night?
And no, Wichita doesn’t have an exclusive on dumbass driving, but I’d bet it’s in the 90 percentile. :)
One thing that may help begining drivers is if drivers education isn’t taught by the football coach because he has to teach some class so he can be the coach. They are among the bozos we are talking about, no better. We need to ditch the coaches and get professional driver education people to teach these classes. We need to get some one who is more concerned about teaching these people how to drive safely than what play they should run at the game this weekend.
Well I did still have some reoccuring upper back and neck problems from it. Today for example.Very much enjoyed the latka I think it was called at the Channukah party. Bascially they are hashbrowns if you know what I’m talking about.A good and educational time, especially in speaking about the laws as far as food in particular.
KIA – I got rear-ended going UPHIL on the 405 one night … I know what you mean …
Very good point, very good. I took Drivers’ Education exactly 47 years ago from a Drivers’ Education teacher. That’s all he taught …. period. (I had been driving tractors and pickups since I was 8 or 9, but that’s the way it was back then, but that’s another story.) We had a 50’s something Ford drivers’ education car with an automatic transmission, but you had to “graduate” to it by mastering a ‘49 Chevy with a “three on the tree” standard. Anyway, I went on to race dragsters, stock cars and finally, drag boats until I finally got good sense. But, back to the point, it’s actually the only high school class that passing or failing can really be “a matter of life and death”. They should certainly be professionals of the first order. Thank you for bringing this up, and allowing me to recall something I hadn’t thought about in years and years.
KIA: Yeah, they’re called “latkes”. or more commonly, “potato pancakes”.they’re really easy to make, and great for breakfast all year round.
rm – I have had latkes – also like bagels with lox and cream cheese. Is there anywhere in Wichita good to get that? Last really good I had was in Atlanta years ago. Used to have lox/bagels/creamcheese all the time back in Boston in my fraternity.
Years ago the Newman Center at UCLA had a Seder supper for Passover/Good Friday. Good to remind people of the connections.
Having gone through an accident where a driver of a truck rear-ended me doing 40, ending up in the back seat because the drivers seat broke loose, and going through 2 months of therapy, that many drivers suck. The morons excuse? He couldn’t see me because it was too bright out. Good thing it wasn’t too dark out; no telling what damage he’d have done.
But I would say most drivers are good drivers, but watching soccer moms drive through red lights while talking on the cell, women putting on make-up while driving, business men reading the paper while driving and the ubiquitious couple fighting in the front seat while driving, mthere are also a score of bad drivers out there.
I love the holiday season. It seems to bring out the worst in people. I have been accosted by shoppers because I have something in my cart they want and can’t find and they want mine. I have been run out of my lane by people driving who think the road is theirs, and then get flipped off by the same people who, evidently, didn’t think I moved fast enough.
Damn good thing I take my meds daily; one never knows when the mind might just decide to flip out, not smile back and say ” Merry Fu**ing Christmas, moron.”
O, ya . . . “Merry Christmas,”
