‘Tis the season to be tangential

Thanks to Robert Glasmann of Wichita for this week’s winning caption. We thought his approach, though not as humorous as some, was truly in the spirit of the season. It seemed appropriate to give recognition to the very wonderful Inter-faith Inn for their great work. Robert also requested we send the original artwork to Sam Muyskens which we did. Now on to some of the other submissions. Lots of entries this week. I always enjoy seeing the creative ways readers work their own pet peeves into the meaning of the cartoon. Bruce Cole of Wichita sent in the short and sweet: "You might try the downtown library." Similarly from Mike Richardson: "All filled up with rich wise men. Try the library." From Karen Wallace of Wichita came: "We have standards. No public breast-feeding." And here comes the topic that was foremost on a lot of entrants’ minds. John Regier of Hesston sent: "Sorry, folks, but the Bethlehem Inn has been condemned by the village council and will be razed to make space for the new arena." Wichita’s Brad Marshall submitted: "Normally I’d let you stay in the stable, but it was demolished to make room for arena parking." Wichita’s Alvin Otter took a wider swipe with: "Sorry. We were going to expand but had to do the arena, Waterwalk, bridges at the Keeper of the Plains, Exploration Place, etc., etc…" Dee Howe, way out in Russell, had a Wichita neighborhood in mind: "Sorry. We’re full of folks from the Kellogg and Oliver area that’s now dominated by the new Walmart." Off in a different direction, Belle Plaine’s Richard Julius sent this: "There won’t be a vacancy until the borders are secured!" And Barney Nordmeyer of Hamilton took it a step farther: "No, buddy, the U. S. Border is one mile north. Border patrol will help you cross, give you food, water, shelter, spending money, education, a good paying tax-free job and the right to vote." Bill Zimmer of Wichita was the only one to go in this direction: "Sorry, Mr. Cheney, but as a member of the far right, I can’t permit a single mother to stay here. Perhaps W and Laura have an extra room." Lynn Sherwood of Derby said: "It’s Bush’s fault." And we end with another caption from good ole Bruce Cole: "Don’t be offended. We fill up quickly when the Shockers come to town."

Occasionally Crowson comes up with a cartoon that tugs at my heart but this one really annoys me.

Reminds me of the speach that the ’so-called-Rev’ Jessie Jackson gave at a democrat convention where he reffered to Joseph and Mary as ‘homeless’ people.

Joseph was a carpenter. Joseph and Mary were traveling to Bethlehem for the annual census and to pay their taxes. They weren’t ‘homeless’ people.

Hanging a ‘homeless’ sign around Joseph’s neck is an indication of Crowson’s secular, left-leaning ignorance.

Not only that, but the little dog says “Sam Muysken’s Inn is Open to Anyone”. That is so far from the truth.. I know countless homeless that have been turned away or kicked out for a variety of reasons. Don’t be fooled into thinking that the only reason people are on the street is because they “choose” to be. Making a bad choice should not disqualify a person permanently from getting help or shelter when the weather is life threatening.

    Huh

    I see a drawing.

Someone else saw a drawing and offered a caption that gave kudos to someone who is actually doing something to help homeless people.

Hank saw a shot at his faith.

Oh I grant you Hank. Your God needs lots of defending. It is pretty deficient in the blessings department. Being biased to the chosen few.

Funny. I don’t see a name tag on the man with the homeless sign or the woman or the donkey either for that matter.

    Dittos, Hank.

Anyone who didn’t recognize Crowson’s cheap mischaracterization of the Holy Family is pretty obtuse.

    Dear J R,

    Your feigned ignorance is telling.

JR…I am surprised at your comment. I thought you held a better understanding of my God. My God needs no defending from man.. He is NOT biased in the least. He offers his salvation to ANYONE who will just accept it. It’s a free gift, no discrimination, nothing withheld. It’s not the “chosen few”, but more like the “few that have chosen”!

No nametag is needed in the cartoon… I would guess 99% of the people seeing it will know EXACTLY who is characterized. There are even shadowy wise men in the background. That being said, I see no real reason to be offended… it doesn’t matter what the financial condition was of Mary and Joseph. It has no real bearing on the event or on what it means to all mankind!

Well of course I and every person in the western world understand the imagery.

I’m not feigning or suffering ignorance of anything.

What I don’t get is Mr. Price’s issue with it.

How does this bit of art HURT…… anyone?

Hank takes offense to it? Maybe that says more about him. Why is he so defensive?

    JR..

Realize that the image is one that is very emotional for Christians… it is the story of the birth of our Holy Savior. Although I believe in laughter, and I don’t mind cartoons about the Christian faith, I do sometimes feel that emotion and that resentment when the information being portrayed is incorrect, or purposefully misleading! I don’t think Crowson was trying to mislead anyone, but I don’t blame Hank for wanting people to be aware of the truth of the story! For that matter, he could have pointed out the fallacy that the wise men were coming to the manger as well. Nowhere does the Bible say that the wise men were there. I think the event is too important to nit pick the details! We should all just rejoice that the event occurred in the first place.. that’s what really matters!

Aww I don’t wanna scrap with you Ksam. You’re a good guy and you do good work.

Try hard as I can I can’t find anything bad about Crowson’s little message here.

Knowing Hank as I do he probably just posted what he did to GET a reaction. I can’t imagine what he would be reacting TO.

But I’ll pick nits with him if that’s what he wants.

Well……even if they were on a journey to pay their taxes and even if the DID have a home back somewhere? They STILL were in need of shelter for the night. No?

Crowson was doing a positive here. Ksam is doing positive on this issue. Inter faith is doing a positive here. Where is the offense?

    Dear J R,

I really do believe that you are stupid. I was merely giving you the benefit of the doubt when I credited you for ‘feigning ignorance’.

This issue about Joseph and Mary for me goes back to Jesse Jackson’s speach to the demcrats at their 1992 convetion:

“We hear a lot of talk about family values, even as we spurn the homeless on the street. Remember, Jesus was born to a homeless couple, outdoors in a stable, in the winter. He was the child of a single mother. When Mary said Joseph was not the father, she was abused. If she had aborted the baby, she would have been called immoral. If she had the baby, she would have been called unfit, without family values. But Mary had family values. It was Herod–the Quayle of his day–who put no value on the family.” Jesse Jackson

For a so-called reverend to refer to Mary and Joseph as homeless people was odd, but he also referred to Mary as an ‘unwed mother’ all to take a political shot at republicans. Since then I have heard or read about brother Jesse and other libs using the ‘homeless’ situation of Mary and Joseph to make political points against republicans. Sad.

It annoys me. It anoys me because it is scripturally inacurate. It annoys me because libs are using a lie to make political points. Not just their usual run-of-the-mill lies, but a lie about the Nativity. And now, Crowson uses the lie for a cartoon. Annoying.

But I still love ya, J R, the season and all,

    Hank

So your issue with Crowson’s art is it REMINDS you of something someone said 14 years ago?

Ok. Uh…..well….good luck with that I guess.

    Well..uh..OK then, we’re done.

    Actually, I’m offended myself.

    The Christians stole Saturnalia!

I saw a good program on the History channel. It was called “Uwrapping Chrismas”.

    Some facts it revealed?

Saturnalia was morphed into Chrismas. It was an ancient Roman pagan holiday. When Christianiny spread through the empire, this established holiday was adapted to fit the new ministers of religion.

Now I knew all that. What I did not know was how much fun Saturnalia was!

It was a time of conspicuous consumption (ok that hasn’t changed) drunkeness, all sorts of carnal pleasures. Real getting wild naked in the streets kinda stuff. Also? It was a time when the master of the house would cater to his servants. The poor could show up at the homes of the wealthy and demand hospitality and the wealthy homeowner was obliged to comply!

Then the grinchy Christians took it all away.

    JR…

Who’s stopping you JR.. go for it.. have your very own Saturnalia celebration, invite all your friends and the WE bloggers! Get drunk,, run (don’t drive) through the streets naked. It will be fun… especially watching ya’ll on the 10 o’clock news.. LOL! ;)

In my opinion JR.. what Christmas has become, really isn’t much of a Christian holiday anymore. The birth of the Saviour has become an excuse for self indulgence, materialism, greed, and for the office Christmas parties… which aren’t all that much unlike what I described above…….Oh yeah, and everyone can throw a couple of bucks into the Salvation Army pot and get a feely good all year long for helping out the poor and homeless. After all, they aren’t hungry or needy except during the holidays!

So, you are right, Saturnalia sounds like lots of fun, and I LOVE the part about the poor going door to door for hospitality… but believe me… NOBODY wants to see me naked, so I think I better pass on that part…

    JR,

Lets make this real easy and simple for you to understand.

    Joseph was not homeless.

Yet here we have Crowson depicting him as homeless.

Either it is a lie or he is too ignorant of the truth.

I am not sure how much simpler it can get. I suppose I could hire someone to speak retard to you.

I as a devout Christian respect you both for your faith. However, I found Herr Crowson’s cartoon to be rather inoffensive.

    It is a lie.
