Headline in this morning’s Wichita EAGLE, “Be truthful and bold, Senate tells Gates.” Will this advice solve the mid-east situation?

Incidentally, Mr. Gates attended East High School in Wichita and someone said his brother was a high school principal here in Wichita. Does anyone know more about Gates’ Wichita connections?

Rick Moran on the Baker report.Funny if it werent so sad.

“You will excuse me if I believe that talking to Syria while it is in the process of gobbling up its tiny Lebanese neighbor to be one of the most cynical, immoral, and ill-considered diplomatic ideas in a generation – which of course is right up Baker’s alley. He is a specialist at sacrificing others for the greater good; just ask the Iraqi Kurds.”http://rightwingnuthouse.com/archives/2006/12/06/asking-men-to-die-to-mitigate-defeat/

Heckler,Your guy has got James A. Baker, III down. He just fell short of saying that the only “good” in Baker’s playbook is oil riches. After 9/11, Baker was immediately hired by the Saudi royal family for the sole purpose of stopping any civil suits that might be leveled against them by the 9/11 victims’ families.

Baker = Great patriot (if that means you’re only concerned with oil wealth)

Went to the annual chamber of commerce last night. Much back-patting; some deserved, some not. I bet there are some sore arms today.

The guests speakers, Mary and James, disappointed me. I felt both were unprepared and unfortunalty, it showed. There was much hem-hawing, changing rhetoric in the middle of a sentence, and not much new to add to any debate.

Except: the fact this election has a history behind it. This is exactly what happened during all other five war elections. So, basically, all the rhetoric written concerning the change of party leadership doesn’t mean a thing. Interesting.

They did, however tell a few humourous jokes.

James did say that in order to beat terrorism, we need to break our dependency on middle east oil and hammer into this countries head the need for alternative energy sources, mainly renewable and non-polluting. That got the biggest applause of the night, and deservidly so.

But the reds far outnumbered the blue, with James saying he felt like a fire plug in a dog pound. Interesting evening nonthe less.

I think the Kurds will get the shaft in all this. They ahd a stable situation with a ‘de facto’ autonomous region under Saddam. Bush deliberately destroyed that and set things in motion that will likely end up with a new suppression of the Kurds. Turkey tolerated the de facto independence; they will not tolerate real independence. Bush’s deliberate destruction of the ’status quo ante’ has created a vacuum which will inevitably be filled by Iran and Syria.

Just as Bush 1 screwed the Kurds; so Bush 2 will do the same thing.

I’m glad James Carville got applause at saying the US needs to get off Middle East Oil and find alternative fuel. Now if this should ever really happen, I’ll believe it when I see it.

Kansans voted two oilmen into the White House, not once but twice. So I don’t believe Kansans are that worried about the US being dependent on Middle East oil.

So the Baker/Hamilton report says we are losing in Iraq. Well, duh…..! I wonder how much money was spent putting that one together?

I think Bob had a brother in Wichita, who was an educator, but I don’t know that he’s still here, retired, or has moved from Kansas. My relationship with Bob began in Texas, after Bob had left Kansas. And yes, Bob was an Eagle Scout when he was young.

Reading the executive summary in the above .pdf (pdf pages 13-18) gives one a good idea on the tenor and recommendations of the report. I think it looks to be a well thought out set of recommendations and goals. The probability that the Bush administration will be able to carry this out hovers around zero, I would think.

Just heard that some Muslim cleric/politico has declared that any Muslim who doesn’t pray five times a day shall be beheaded, according to Muslim law. Sam Brownback, through his campaign manager, Fred Phelps, has stated that this “interaction of thought is a middle ground for Christians and Muslims to come together”, and adds this into his platform for his presidential bid, feeling it should work equally well for Christian Conservatives everywhere.

So being an Eagle Scout elevates a person to some high authority?

Come on, guys. I went to school with Eagle Scouts. I remember hearing stories about their “campouts,” complete with cases of beer. Since they weren’t yet 18 (beer buying age was 18 in the olden days *grin*), that doesn’t reflect well on the Eagle Scouting experience.

    Please get real.

Another example of the wonderful Bush administration in action:

“Audit says FEMA squandering Katrina aidHOPE YENAssociated PressWASHINGTON – The government is squandering tens of millions of dollars in Hurricane Katrina disaster aid, in some cases doling out housing payments to people living rent-free, investigators said Wednesday.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has recouped less than 1 percent of the $1 billion that investigators contend it squandered on fraudulent assistance, according to the Government Accountability Office. Its report shows the disaster relief agency’s struggles, one year after the deadly storm, to rush aid to those in need while also preventing abuse.”
