Rest in peace President Ford.
Thank you President Gerald R. Ford for quieting America at a critical time in U.S. history.
Thanks Gerry for many jobs well done.
If only we could have such a man as you clean up our current state of affairs.
I never had any ill feelings towards President Ford but in today’s news coverage, there was Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld. I didn’t remember those two being in Ford’s administration.
Other than Ford’s choice in aides and his pardon of Richard Nixon, the man did okay as president.
At least the man didn’t do us any harm as a nation. He seemed like a fair man. We should get back to the civility that Ford displayed while president and since.
I am willing to bet that he has a very quite funeral. Very small, very humble but very respectful funeral that will be attended by statesman from all over the world. Nothing near the size or as elaborate as Regan’s…
Gerald Ford, Nebraska’s Native Son, Michigan’s Legend, Football Player, Yale Law School Graduate, Congressman, member of the Warren Commission, Minority Leader in the U.S. House of Representatives, Vice President and President.
Despite the avenues in which he arose to his last two positions, he provided a calming influence on the Nation when we were hurting. He pardoned Nixon and gave Draft Dodgers a pardon by allowing them an out. With Henry Kissinger’s superb Diplomatic action, he engaged the Soviet Union in Detente’ and kept the Nuclear madmen from blowing each other up.
He was a clever fellow who would take the time to say hello to anyone.
Gerald Ford, we will miss you and remember you.
In yesterday’s paper there was a letter to the editor about puppy mills. (I apologize for not remebering the lady’s name.)
There are several ways to buy a good puppy these days, a pet store is the worst. For every two puppies that makes it to the pet store, one dies in the process. then, many times there are health problems with the puppies that are sold.
That is only half the problem. The absolute horror the dogs that the millers use for breeding live in is unimaginable. I know, I’ve been to many puppy mills in Kansas, Missouri and Arkansas.
I have a ‘rescue’ bearded collie that lived the first two years of his life in a puppy mill in Missouri. When we got him he weighed a little over 25lbs. (normal weight should have been 50-55lbs) He was filthy, had fleas, ticks and worms. He had lived in a 2ft by 4ft cage. No muscle tone. No coordination, couldn’t run or jump. He is still scared of people other than Joyce or me.
If you buy a puppy at a pet store I have probably just described its sire and dam.
What to do? Go the the Humane Society and discuss your expectations of a pet. They will help find a suitable pet for your family and lifestyle.
If you desire a purebred dog, go to the AKC website and do research there. They have links to all of the national purebred dog clubs. You will be able to find a reputable breeder nearby.
If Santa did bring you a puppy for Christmas, remember, you have just made a committment to care for this dog for its lifetime! Teach him manners and discipline! Get him spayed or neutered! I highly reccomend that you train him for an AKC Canine Good Citizen certificate.

Hank, as a dog lover who, unfortunately cannot currently have one due to many reasons, I echo and concur with all the comments made in your 10:00 am post. Read and heed, all those to whom it applies. Please.
suza,
Go back far enough, and you’ll find that Cheney and Rumsfeld and others (Wolfowitz) were involved in the Nixon administration.
I’m almost certain that the Sheltie I had as a child was from a puppy mill. I remember going out to this farm, and it was like this huge…thing built to house maybe twenty dogs, but it was dark, and the guy had to use a broom handle to reach the dog inside. He scooted it out to me, and when I held him he buried his nose into my arm, probably from seeing light. I think he was sterile, he had rickets.
But that really was the best dog. I say keep getting these abused animals, some will make excellent pets and you can always know you saved them and give them a better life.
Dear P Mom,
The shame goes with the millers. Their dogs are not to blame. I have placed some very sweet puppy mill dogs in ‘rescue’ homes.
Bearded Collie Rescue will go into the puppy mill auctions and buy all of the beardies we can to get them out of the system. We then clean them up, fix them and find good ‘forever’ homes for them.
There are some breeds that come from puppy mills that are worse than others. Mostly toys. And, a lot of the working dog breeds.
I might be the only guy you know that got more Christmas cards from ‘dogs’ than people!
Compassion for dogs, none for Iraqis . . . unbelievable, but that’s CONservativism for you.
With the internet, finding a quality breeder of dogs has become so easy that it is inexcusable that puppy mills continue to exist.
My breed of choice is the Shih Tzu. Now you can go to a pet store or the classifieds and find Shih Tzus for $300 – $600. I paid $1,000 for mine.
The difference? I chose a breeder accredited by the Shih Tzu national club. They have very high standards for the breeders they recommend.
MY dog will likely not experience the terrible health problems of a miil puppy. So in the end he will be more comfortable AND econmomical.
Uh, capn? Believe it or not, not EVERYTHING is a political issue… political beliefs to not drive every single action of people.
Well…most normal people, anyway. But probably doesn’t apply to you…
When you do find a breeder, ask for references. Ine good way to know if your breeder is reputatble is by the questions that he asks you.
A reputable breeder will have a contract that lays out his expectations as far as health care, neutering or spaying, etc. Every reputable breeder I know will want to talk to the veternarian that you use.
The Wichita Kennel Club has people that will help you find a local breeder for most breeds.
If you’ve never been to the April dog show at the Colosium, that is also a very good place to meet people that are into your favorite breed. The Wichita dog show every april is one of the top five dog shows in the nation. WHen you realize that every weekend there is between 25 and 50 AKC dog shows going on somewhere in the nation, being in the top five is pretty impressive!

Quote of the Day:
” . . . Though I sympathize with the Jews, let me add a word of warning. No person of honesty and vision can look on their pro-war policy here today without seeing the dangers involved in such a policy, both for us– and for them. Instead of agitating for war, the Jewish groups in this country should be opposing it in every possible way, for they will be among the first to feel its consequences. Tolerance is a virtue that depends upon peace and strength. History shows that it cannot survive war and devastation. A few far-sighted Jewish people realize this, and stand opposed to intervention. But the majority still do not. Their greatest danger to this country lies in their large ownership and influence in our motion pictures, our press, our radio, and our government. We cannot blame them for looking out for what they believe to be their own interests, but we must also look out for ours. We cannot allow the natural passions and prejudices of other peoples to lead our country to destruction.”* Charles Lindbergh

Yes, Gerald Ford died. I’ve commented previously on the man’s incredibly mixed legacy. . .but he was 93. A long, fairly fulfulling life, lacking in major scandal (unless you count letting Kissinger continue his greed-driven, genocidal “foreign policy”).
What, no James Brown thread? Where are thee, musicians?
P.S. Not meaning to speak ill of the dead, but the people of East Timor deserved some mention of it.
Ian, I cannot believe you quoted Charles Lindberg, one of the most racist men on the planet!!! I forgot you don’t believe in the Holocoust.
I love my dogs. I have rescued many. I have a cat that was dumped at a nursing home I worked at and I have an older dog I took in when his owner could not care for him any longer. She was a resident at the nursing home. My other two dogs are miniture dashaunds.

OK
I just finished watching about the last half of Mel Gibson’s ‘The Passion”.
Here are my conclusions.
Gibson IS anti semitic.
Gibson is ALSO dangerously insane.
If Christians REALLY believe this story? I now understand not just their zeal and a whole lot more about them.
I remain steadfastly atheist. If your God WERE real? I’d want no part of him.
“Charles Darwin thought the Aborigines of Australia were the ‘Missing Link!’
Darwin is a racist”
So was the fundamentalist captain of the Beagle, who threatened to throw Charles Darwin off of his ship when he objected to the cruelties of human slavery (which Fitzgerald, the captain, defended).
So were the Baptists who broke off from their bretheren when they objected to slavery. You know, the founders of the Southern Baptists.
So, I imagine, were the southern legislators who passed the laws against teaching evolution in the end of the 19th century and the early part of the 20th century. You know, the laws like the one John Scopes was prosecuted under.
So, certainly, were the virulant and violent racists who justified their racism through a form of biblical fundamentalism that claimed that non-whites were seperate creations.
The charges of racism against Charles Darwin reveal prejudices that were all too common in 19th century European men. They have nothing to do with belief in the validity of evolution, and indeed nothing to do with the validity of Charles Darwin’s work.
“Compassion for dogs, none for Iraqis . . . unbelievable, but that’s CONservativism for you.”
This comment is just sad. A man expresses compassion for something and it is used against him for political points.
Partisanship at its most pathetic.
