Of course the leftists on this blog will swear that they do not politically indoctrinate their children like the girl in the youtube video. Noooo, 8 year old girls usually make comparisons of Nazis and the KKK to the Republican party! They do that all the time! This little girl is the future of American liberalism. This little girl is representative of the kind of America the Leftist liberals want America to become. To politically indoctrinate a child who clearly has no bearing on historical facts (comparing Nazis to Republicans for Pete’s sake!) is of course, proof that freedom of thought is not a Leftist liberal concept. Perhaps her liberal fuckup parents could have first let this little girl formulate her own opinions before brainwashing her?

    Freedom of thought, my ass.

Why a hydrogen economy doesn’t make sense

In a recent study, fuel cell expert Ulf Bossel explains that a hydrogen economy is a wasteful economy. The large amount of energy required to isolate hydrogen from natural compounds (water, natural gas, biomass), package the light gas by compression or liquefaction, transfer the energy carrier to the user, plus the energy lost when it is converted to useful electricity with fuel cells, leaves around 25% for practical use — an unacceptable value to run an economy in a sustainable future. Only niche applications like submarines and spacecraft might use hydrogen.

Heckler – As you know, I have never been a big advocate of hydrogen. I have always raised the issue of “where do you get the energy to split the water.” I have, however, been open to possibilities that might get around that problem (perhaps solar or nuclear). I did see an interesting solar possibility (linked it before, will try to find it again) that would be direct photons to H2 without going through electricity.

For mrage on WSU football (letter published in Eagle long ago):

    Football at Wichita State?

Proponents of bringing big-time football to Wichita State University have been pressing their case lately. However, their advocacy of this action lacks a plan to make this happen. I would like to propose a concrete action plan to bring football to WSU:

    1. Hold a mammoth rally at Cessna Stadium to demonstrate community support for the effort. Proponents of a big-time football program should expect tens of thousands of fans to attend the rally. At that rally collect money that would serve to begin the establishment of an endowment fund for the football program.2. Place the funds collected into a secure account to serve as the base for further fund raising. The University can provide information to the football advocates as to the level of revenues required to establish the program.3. Continue fund-raising until enough money has been raised to cover the costs both of renovating Cessna Stadium and of building a football program.4. When sufficient funds have been collected; turn the account over to University officials so that they can establish the program.

If, in fact, there is sufficient support in the community for a viable football program at WSU the proponents of such a program should have no difficulty in raising this money. If successful, this fund-raising will demonstrate that support.

Mrage, to continue for a bit, our posting discussion from yesterday. You quite reasonably queried my assertion that dropping to Div 1-AA by Marshall resulted in a lowering of costs; you posited that travel expense should be comparable.

OK, as to costs: I don’t recall the scholarship allotment in the 1980s; but, at present, Division 1-A football programs are allowed to provide a total of 85 grants in aid to “student-athletes”; Division 1-AA is limited to a total of 35. Such disparity has existed for many years, and would account for my “lower cost” assertion.

Travel: I have no real world experience with college athletic travel budgets; however, I note that Division 1-A teams often fly (charter or commercial) to away games; according to the commentators on ESPN who were doing a Division 1-AA semifinal game last Saturday or Sunday (Montana vs. ??), the visiting team had flown for the first time this season; apparently, its conference and nonconference games were sited such that bus travel is the norm. Another substantial savings.

    See that’s my thinking Ben.

What a lot of people don’t know is that in the video the little girl attacked Bill O’Reilly. That’s the same Bill O’ Reilly who has called for a new summer of mercy campaign in Wichita. I guess the kids who will no doubt participate in that will be seen as “being taught about public discourse” or some such thing.

Anybody whining about this kids indoctrinization should also comment on the kids of Westboro Baptist church.

  22. kansassam

JR..I call it Sunday School.. what do you call it? One could probably consider any kind of education “indoctrination” because someone is being taught what the teacher believes is right. In this case.. BIG DIFFERENCE. This poor child is being taught to hate anything and anyone that is different from her and she doesn’t even understand the differences! As for Sunday School… what is wrong with a child being taught that they are loved even if their parents are buttheads? What is wrong with teaching a child to love their neighbor even if they are a different color, they smell bad, they are poor, or they are different from you? What is wrong with teaching children that it is wrong to steal, murder, lie, cheat, or even to be disrespectful?

Seems to me the world could use a little more respect these days!

ks-sam – it was only a few days ago on this blog that we were told “the Bible has a name for a child born out of wedlock.” I wonder what kind of “loved even if their parents are buttheads” message the “bastard” gets?

Ben…Sunday School for children does not even approach issues like that. These are topics that cannot even be understood by children. Now Ksam you KNOW I wasn’t tarring folks like you with my rather broad brush. Your earlier comment acknowledged that indoctrinization goes both ways. Here I’ll give you an example.

Some years ago, a kid in my kids class told him there was no Santa Claus and that he would go to hell if he believed in Santa! At a conference with the teacher a few days later, I was lucky enough to meet the boys mother. I asked her what she meant having her kid talk that way. She got very defensive.

“Well IS there a Santa?” she demanded. “What did my son say that was wrong? You are lying to your son! Blah blah…bad parent…etc.

I just looked at her and said “Lady to me your God is no more real than my Santa. But I don’t teach my kid to go around saying it.”

You shoulda seen her jaw hit the floor.

Break 2 leggs and add to the bowl and chuck in the cup of dried fruit, pick the frigging fruit off floor… Mix on the turner. If the fried druit gets stuck in the beaterers, just pry it loose with a drewscriver. Sample the Cuervo to check for tonsisticity.Next, sift two cups of salt, or something. Check the Jose Cuervo. Now shift the lemon juice and strain your nuts. Add one table. Add a spoon of sugar, or somefink. Whatever you can find. Greash the oven.Turn the cake tin 360 degrees and try not to fall over. I have no recollection of every commenting on the above subject. If you can provide proof, I will concede the point, but I am betting I won’t have to.

My point was what this mom (I am assuming mom) used her little girl to reach her “target market” – people who question O’Riley, Bush, and religion. Is it much different than Lavonne Pirner using Rugby to sell carpet, or Edna bringing out the dottering Earl to pimp cheap furniture on South Oliver? Maybe not – and boy did that mom get a ton of free advertising by O’Liely having shit fit and falling over in it. I think the rather large JOKE may be on him…

    .morg,

Ok concerning the JesusCamp video, I felt disgusted about the entire veneration? of the card-board cut-out of Bush. That was just abhorrent. I am not an evangelical fundamentalist, (although you wouldn’t be wrong in describing me as a Catholic fundamentalist) so I haven’t personally experienced anything like a Jesus camp. I do believe that it is unfair to compare Jesus camp to the madrasas of jihaddist groups. The reason being that children in madrasas are being taught to kill infidels, and the Jesus camp video, I haven’t seen any evidence to corroborate that. You see kids in fatigues, but that is probably the only similarity between the kids in the Jesus camp video and kids in terrorist training camp videos. The kids in the Jesus camp video don’t have bombs strapped to their chests and their not firing assault rifles. They are being taught fundamental religious beliefs, well there really isnt anything we can do about that since we’re a constitutional republic. I don’t personally believe that their religious beliefs are correct or more truthful than other religious beliefs, so if you’re looking for me to defend their religious beliefs then you’ll be sorely disappointed cuz I won’t. I think that such a system of thought is radical to the extreme, but I don’t see any evidence of those kids being taught to bomb abortion clinics or kill abortionists like George Tiller. (Even though I am ardently opposed to abortion practices.) I believe that their preacher both the woman and the man in the red shirt with the word Life on it are both just filling these kids heads with fundamental reactionary rhetoric. They get these kids in an emotional state to get them to affirm their beliefs. In all honesty, I don’t think that religious beliefs should be based on emotion, but on the rational approach to faith. But it’s their right to do Jesus camp in this country, you know, just like it’s the “coolest 8 year old in the worlds”parents right to make videos. You know, I am disgusted by both of them, I find their views to be abhorrent and ignorant. You will notice that the little girl says that what people need to learn is empathy you know, toward their fellow man. But her parents or whoever is responsible for making that tripe, didn’t exactly show much empathy to my religious beliefs, and I think that if liberals are going to disrespect something so important and so central to myself as my religious beliefs, then why should I respect anything they hold important? You know, why should I respect abortion rights? why should I respect gays rights to marriage? To be honest, gay marriage doesnt affect me at all, so personally it is a non-issue. But when people constantly take a swipe at me, I’m not ging to react positively towards them. I guess what many on the Left dont understand is that Im not going to change to conform to their agendas. If that’s somehow intolerant, I don’t know. I don’t think it’s intolerant, because I don’t feel that if we are to progress as a society, we all have to think and agree upon the same issues all the time, to improve our society.

    Vaughn,

No matter number of students-athletes at 85, for 1-A colleges or 35 for 1-AA, the training facilities and staff needed are probably the same.

Marshall did drop down to a lower classification for them it has worked out. If they took a bus to more games, they did save money by traveling.

Travel by bus around WSU in any direction, is all D-1A colleges.

WSU Football team could bus to Colorado, Oklahoma, Nebraska and into Missouri states easily. To Texas, plenty of D-1A teams there.

Our airport is a problem taking flights. For the WSU football team flying out economically or any college football team, players and fans flying here.

Length of time to build a stadium in years, our airport should continually be “fixed” economically.

If the air traffic is improved with bigger sports teams coming back and forth to Wichita, airlines like that continual traffic in such large groups. Flight deals can be made with certain airlines.

    Ben,

I remember you penned that letter about Cessna stadium filled with fans of football. That will happen after a coach is hired. Coach and staff will have two years before gaining any players. Maybe three years. Depends on ability of the Coach hired.

The WSU endowment fund you imagine can be “public”. Anybody can give to WSU for scholarships, whatever amount. New programs are going to be created, like girls soccer, swim team and field hockey. Those are my guesses.

But funds for WSU football will come from “business”. The group building the stadium creates a fund for WSU to use. Any business or individual can donate or trade services to assist football.

The group will build new housing for WSU increased students and parking near the campus for commuters.

Title IX requires girls and guys get similar things and equipment. Training, locker rooms and modes of travel. Bus has to be same for men’s and women’s sports.

It’s not going to be easy creating the stadium but the goal is doable.

Wichita State University will decide to become Wichita Shockers University when they realize how beneficial this process creating football is.

Why can’t it be time to do it?

Start to do it, been 20 years. By 25 years since football ended, we should be half way there, to bringing football back to this community.

Gives Wichita a facility that does more events than just football.

More seats, than the downtown arena are necessary for Wichita’s future growth.

Maybe some of you will find it interesting.”To the relief of fiscal conservatives, member of the conservative Republican Study Committee chose Rep Jeb Hensarling (R-Tex.) as its chairman over appropriator, Todd Tiahrt (R-Kan.).Tiahrt is a conservative member of Congress and an active member on several issues related to religious conservatism. But many conservatives were questioning whether an appropriator would be a proper chairman for the group that complained incessantly about earmarks and runaway Republican spending in the 109th Congress.

Will there is a whole march on the evangelicals to violence. Look at the left behind books for kids and the video games that are killing for christ. They’re just going about it far more sneakier.

Will do you know why liberals support other whacky fundamentalists to allow their religions? Like mormons, JW’s, amish, mennonites?

Because they are not a majority and they’re not advocating taking away rights from people. They have no power. The difference is that YOUR group and evangelicals do have power to impact our life through legislation. and that is scary to us.

Again it all goes back to separation of church and state. And I’ll say it again, if it comes down to it- you’ll lose to the evangelicals.

It never ceases to amaze me that men have so much to say about abortion yet they have never been faced with the decision. I don’t like abortion but I think it is sometimes the best alternative available. I know personally what it is like to be raped by a family member and become pregnant. Thank goodness my girlfriend’s mother knew someone who could help me even though abortion wasn’t legal then. I am sorry that the abortion was necessary but I have never regreted doing it. No one else should ever have to go through what I did. Society wants to prevent abortion but doesn’t allow children to be rationally educationed on prevention. We want to save the fetus but for what? Just because it makes us feel better? If we take care of the children that are already here we can prevent future need for abortion. We throw away the weak in our society, the children and the elderly.

Thanks Brenda. I describe my position as “abortion sucks but I’m pro-choice.” I have never had to face in any way what you describe but I have been around women with ‘difficult’ pregnancies. I’ve been lucky, in each case we have found a way through it to birth; I absolutely prefer that.

Catholic Charities is one of those on my list every year; they support women through these situations. (Some here will recall my friendly wager with Hank – loser donates to Gerard House) I invite all the pro-life people here to get out your checkbooks and contribute to the shelter/clinic of your choice.

Ben, I think we all think abortion sucks.

God knows it’s a decision I would never want to have to make.

I also would support any organization that TRULY wants to help women who want to keep their babies. Provided that organization is not anti-choice.That’s why I prefer planned parenthood.

One thing I have seen that infuriates me is a family turning their back on a daughter who gets pregnant. They are driving her toward abortion. I believe that if there is more support for a woman the chances of abortion are decreased.

Are we still talking about brining football to WSU?

Who is going to pay for it?

I am not talking about the massive initial cost of hiring coaches and staff and building facilities either.

I am talking about the sustainment of the team.

The amount of money it takes to not only start a team, but to sustain one is a money loosing business.

Even some of the succesful footbal programs in other states and all over the country loose money.

Talk to a man who knows what he is talking about when it comes to this like President Beggs.

    I have.

I was the Student Government VP for WSU for 2 years and a Senator as for one.

They have been talking about foot ball for all 3 years.

It is some “anonymous” organization that kept putting out info on it trying to start some buzz.

The problem is that you sit here talking about all this money for a team, but it doesn’t exist.

WSU is a commuter school. Most of the student population commutes. It is a non traditional school. The students don’t care about football, they care about their tuition and costs of their education.

    Nathan…

I think these folks believe they can start up a football team and it will immediately be a “winner”. That’s not going to happen.. a startup team would be bad… or mediocre at best. A team like that is not going to draw big bucks… it will be a financial drain.Everyone is so excited about the great Shocker basketball team, and for good reason. Think about it.. start football.. draw money away from the basketball program. Now you have a football team AND a basketball team that can’t compete. Is that what people really want? My son goes to WSU and he says noone cares about or wants football.. I believe it would be a big mistake!

I’m barely awake this morning to have this conversation properly…

    Nathan,

Good for you, being active in WSU student gov in the past and talking to President Beggs and their confusion who it was talking about football back then.

It wasn’t me. The group brought together to build a stadium this County and City needs IN A FEW YEARS, will together make a football fund for WSU to use.

Sustaining college football, teams are paid when they go on the road. I have no idea success of future WSU football wins and losses, its a paycheck. New programs in D-1A get a lot of money, $300,000 to play in some major unversity stadiums. WSU basketball got $80,000 to play at Syracuse on the road as example. Revenue WSU football could receive would be more than any current sport WSU has today. TV money keeps increasing, any cable game means dollars to University as well. If WSU wins enough they might some day make Network TV. Networks almost need to show every college game they can for content.

It’s different today for college football than it ever was back in 1986.

12 games. 5 or 6 at home, the rest on a road. Not flying but taking a bus, more dollars saved.

WSU commuter desigation does not matter. That’s WSU today. Build some dorms and apartments near campus will be done. Future students could live near enough to the campus. Apartment companies build them, only the land has to be made available. Not all costs on WSU alone for housing construction costs.

The sports and event facility is necessary because the downtown arena will only do, what it can.

Increased number of citizens to Wichita all the time, WSU has to keep trying increasing more students from high school as the years go on. We are 10 years from having a WSU football game.

Business can buy and build whatever they want and every attempt at profits is a risk no matter what’s constructed. Nothing gets built to lose money on purpose. Believe me, no maverick financing will happen unless the numbers work.

Wichita has to economically act like cities around us in neighboring states.

    Kanssam,

When WSU had a football team and it was struggling, WSU basketball in the early 80’s was ranked number 2 in the nation. WSU football was 8-3 in 1982. But scheduling became a huge problem until 1986. The MVC football conference dying didn’t help either. It was weak football conference anyway.

Florida won the NCAA basketball championship, if the football team beats Ohio State, it maybe the first college to have champions in both sports.

WSU will never be University of Florida but the college game of football is an event for communities and oppurtuntity for more students going to college. That means more scholarships for girls created bringing back the football program.

Your son at WSU, its not for him. It’s for future Shockers. I’m all for student fees not to be raised, with any new program WSU creates. Freeze tuition somehow, don’t keep raising it.

It’s not students responsbility at all.

??? I don’t get what you mean by “Left Behind books” or violent video games. First of all, let me tell you that videogames have always been violent, ever since the first Nintendo. The only difference is that today, the graphics you see on-screen are far more advanced and realistic. But you ALWAYS had games which sole concept was to blow shit up.

Mrage, I admire your dogged persistence in moving toward your goal. May you have eventual success.

One issue that hasn’t been raised in the discussion concerning the return of football to WSU (unless I missed it above) is the additional scholarship opportunities which will, under Title IX, be required to be offered to female students (assuming no men’s sports are cut to account for the differential caused by adding additional scholarships for football). While I am aware of the Bush Administration’s policy statement on this issue, that is, equal opportunity is not necessarily equal number of schollies, as far as I know, the court decisions on this matter have held a 1 to 1 relationship is required. Thus, the additional cost and drain to the total athletic department budget is more than just that directly related to a football program; it also includes the additional funds for Title IX compliance.

  75. Mrage
    Posted December 15, 2006 at 6:57 pm | Permalink

    Vaughn,

Title IX is meaningless to worry because its effort. Does a University and community desire girls athletic scholarships.

Yes. What girls sports have problems, its not wins and losses. It’s locker rooms, coaching staffs and their pay, meal money same as guys, equipment on par, access time to gyms and weight rooms. The bus girls athletics take or charter flights, similar to guy’s sports.

It maybe difficult to maintain some girls sports because coaches want to move on, look at WSU softball, basketball. WSU baseball has had Gene Stephenson for 30 years. Men’s basketball has had less coaching turnover.

It’s not effort that’s bad, giving more athletic scholarships to girls, its administration reasons.

Jim Schaus is winning MVC ALL SPORTS titles and that means sports programs are being adminstrated well for both girls and guys.

Title IX new sports at WSU could be girls soccer, swimming and field hockey. Field Hockey is not familar to this area but it looks okay and pretty fun. A swim facility would have to be built for WSU swim team, it also could be a community retail place for anyone to swim as well.

WSU football guys won’t take any facility space on the campus. Just the players using classrooms and the parking lot for cars.

Where new girls sports facilities will be, has to be determined on campus. No new sports can take away from existing programs facilities or equipment, okay. Let Jim Schaus or whoever the next AD will be do that job.

“WSU football guys won’t take any facility space on the campus” – where will they be?

  77. Mrage
    Posted December 15, 2006 at 7:19 pm | Permalink

    Ben,

Somewhere. Placement for any football related facilities won’t be announced now. How can they be, no football program exists.

Ideas where they will be, do exist.

I’ve done a little background on WSU name, its nothing mystical. Because a municipal University became a State institution, it was lack of community pride and imagination to put State on their title.

It has to be theatrical, the reason behind WSU naming improvement. Drama among all within WSU to do it.

They’ll do it out of pride and mission statement. When it happens, you’ll read about it.

The evidence Wheatshockers were people in the past. People have been reduced to characterization, nationally many don’t understand. Every person affliated with WSU is a Shocker. Wichita Shockers University. 3 more letters on the logo..where is the impossibility of changing that?
