On this World AIDS Day, more people need to do as Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kan., and Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., will do at Rick Warren’s Global Summit on AIDS and the Church in California. Not just get tested for the disease, which they will, but set aside politics and preconceptions to help chart a common course for countering a disease now on track to become the No. 3 cause of death worldwide within the next 25 years. New drugs have turned AIDS and HIV into a manageable chronic disease for some, especially for Americans. But with 39.5 million people now infected with HIV globally and a record 4.3 million new infections and 2.9 million AIDS deaths already in 2006, this is no time for prevention and treatment efforts to falter. As Brownback said, “To win the fight against AIDS we must each set aside our differences and join together as human beings from all political, religious and nonreligious walks of life, fighting for the lives of people who are suffering and dying.”

No surprise the pro-death group Operation Rescue is protesting against this summit.
No Doug.. that is just another of your twisted opinions. In my opinion, Maggotpunks is the pro-death group!
Operation Rescue has faults, but it is NOT protesting against the summit, they are only asking Rick Warren to reconsider inviting Obama to speak!
From the OR website:
Wichita, KS – Operation Rescue’s President Troy Newman has released the following statement in response to Saddleback Valley Community Church’s justification of their invitation of pro-abortion Sen. Barack Obama to participate in a summit on HIV/AIDS.
The matter of abortion is a moral imperative, and actions speak louder than words.
One simply cannot justify inviting pro-abortion Sen. Barack Obama to speak in the defense of the lives of HIV/AIDS victims when he has already expressed to the world his blatant lack of respect for human life by supporting abortion, including the radical partial-birth abortion procedure. Because of his callous disregard for innocent life, Obama lacks the moral credibility to speak on life issues.
There are some things that just cannot be excused with a disclaimer, and support for abortion is one of them.
We find it distressing that Mr. Warren could attempt to defend his pro-life position while giving little more than lip service to the deaths of over 126,000 babies that die that from abortion each day worldwide. The AIDS pandemic pales in comparison to the abortion holocaust.
We repeat our call for Mr. Warren to rescind his invitation to Sen. Barrack Obama, and ask in addition that he would take meaningful action to stop the brutal deaths of innocent children by abortion, the watershed issue of our time.
kansassam,
Quoting a charlatan and fraud like Troy Newman does you no credit.
CF…
I have no concern what you think of me… I have more than enough credit to get by. This was only an example of the truth, do some research in any media you desire.
kansassam,
If want that credit to evaporate, keep quoting Troy Newman.
CF…
I am not the one that stretched the truth here, so why do you choose to attack my credibility. How about you or Doug post a link that PROVES me wrong. I will accept that and admit to being wrong. Otherwise, just admit that OR did not protest against the summit.. only against Obama. Facts are facts no matter where they are printed.
“2.9 million AIDS deaths already in 2006″
In 2005 there were 2.2 million deaths from Asbestos related exposure. How come we aren’t talking about that and funding that disease? MOST AIDS cases come from cultural bias (against wearing condoms) or risky behavior. Asbestos deaths are totaly democratic and have no bias in killing. However it is not banned, nor is it financed.Additionally, the responsibile corporations are wanting to be given a pass on their liability by the FAIR act.
Could you imagine the outcry from the world if aids patients would have their ability to sue over AIDS taken away from them like asbestos sufferers are being threatened.
Perspective…perspective. There are also FAR more deaths than 2.2 million per year from asbestos… that is because of the difficulty of diagnosis.
I think the compassion train is over with AIDS. We know what causes it, we how to avoid it. The End
Boy, fleettwood’s a busy boy this morning, stinkin’ up the place.
Nice job running away from a fight you were losing yesterday, fleeettwood. Care to go two for two?
I too am disappointed with you Ksam.
Obama should not be invited to help out with AIDS because he is pro-choice?
JR..I did not say that.. all I said was that OR made that point. I never said I agreed with them.
cf-A discussion of whether the MSM is liberal or conservative is silly. I’ve told you the answer, you just don’t like it.
fleettwood,
You asked for evidence, denied I had provided it, and ignored subsequent evidence. You then ran away.
Your “answer” is bollocks. Put up or shut up. To be frank, I’d prefer you did the latter rather than the former. But either way.
Your evidence is of what the MSN didn’t do. Just because they didn’t do what you think they should have is not evidence. Ponderous, man, ponderous.
flettwood,
Nooooo; the Fox News Memo indicates an intentional slant in coverage, and a hope that events transpire so that Democrats can be painted as guilty by association with Iraqi insurgents.
But, Democrats ARE guilty by association.
And, what in the hell does that have to do with my list of “usual suspects”?Absolutely none of them can be accused of a conservative bias. Period
Steve posted this in July. Here is you “liberal main stream media”
I saw this on a yahoo forum, Looks like they nailed the Liberal MSM! ?Liberals dominate the media….this has been announced by Rush Limbaugh. And Thomas Sowell. And Ann Coulter. And Rich Lowry. Bill O’Reilly. And William Safire. And Robert Novak. And William F. Buckley, Jr. And George Will. And John Gibson. And Michelle Malkin. And David Brooks. And Tony Snow. And Tony Blankely. And Fred Barnes. And Britt Hume. And Larry Kudlow. And Sean Hannity. And David Horowitz. And William Kristol. And Hugh Hewitt. And Oliver North. And Joe Scarborough. And Pat Buchanan. And John McLaughlin. And Cal Thomas. And Joe Klein. And James Kilpatrick. And Tucker Carlson. And Deroy Murdock. And Michael Savage. And Charles Krauthammer. And Stephen Moore. And Alan Keyes. And Gary Bauer. And Mort Kondracke. And Andrew Sullivan. And Nicholas von Hoffman. And Neil Cavuto. And Matt Drudge. And Mike Rosen. And Dave Kopel. And John Caldara. The mainstream media in this country are dominated by liberals. Look at how they all gave Bill Clinton a pass on the whole Monica Lewsinsky affair. Remember? It was never in the news. We never heard any of the salacious details.Mention that the Sunday PBS pundit show The McGlauglin Group is named and orchestrated by that liberal John McGlauglin guy.Mention that the second largest media organization in America is owned and controlled by that liberal Rupert Murdoch guy.Mention that the most listened to dittoheaded talk radio show in the world is from that liberal Rush Limbaugh guy.Mention that the most listened to political commentary on the radio is that liberal Paul Harvey guy.Mention that the magazine with the largest circulation in America –TV Guide — is owned and controlled by that liberal Rupert Murdoch guy.Mention that the daily newspaper with the top circulation in America is the liberal Wall Street Journal.Mention that Newsweek’s back page editorial 4 out of 5 times is from that liberal George Will guy.Mention that ABC, CBS, NBC and their owners Disney, Westinghouse and General Electric are liberal corporations.Mention that over 90% of the daily newspapers over the past 16 years endorsed such liberals as Reagan, Reagan, Bush, Bush and Dole for President.Mention that you can’t even turn a radio on the AM dial without hearing such liberals as Bob Grant, Gordon Liddy, Ken Hamblin, Michael Reagan, Armstrong Williams and Laura Schlessinger pushing their liberal biasßCHECK OUT ALL THOSE “Liberals” =>Rupert Murdoch of FOX – $30,033 to RNC… AOL/Time Warner/Walter Isaacson of CNN – $60,150 to RNC… GE/Jack Welch of NBC – $160,350 to RNC… Disney/Michael Eisner/ABC – $208,052 to RNC … and on… and on… and on…It’s so VERY BAD that we are REALLY LUCKY to hear about ANY “Bush Administration” F-UP’s at ALL!!! (I’m sure it’s only because the “REAL stories” get picked-up by the WORLD Media so they HAVE to say SOMETHING about the “Real News”!)After ALL!!! THEY know that the “Liberals” will go ALL OUT to protect the interests of “Big Business” and the friends of George!!! Neil Boortz, Michael Savage, everyone at Fox News except Juan Williams . . .Posted by: steve | July 23, 2006 at 08:58 PM
Thank you for the reminder. I will add Time and Newsweek to the list of Lib media.
kansassam, I’m sure your support of a domestic terrorist is really appreciated by domestic terrorists everywhere. The man you quote is the same person who protests against anti-war protests, protests against AIDS summits, associates with convicted clinic bombers, supports global warming, and thinks doctors and women who get abortions should be executed.
Yet, I’m the pro-death one. Yup, your comments make real sense.
Doug…
You are so funny!! Where did I support anyone? All I did was point out your exaggeration of the truth. Noone has proven my point wrong.
My comments do make sense.
Apart from you contradicting what Operation Rescue’s position is then perhaps your comments make sense. Right now they don’t want to Summit to continue, hence they have a problem with people getting together to combat the problem of AIDS.
Doug..
Many, many churches have summits about AIDS prevention. Does OR protest all of these? I agree that O.R. is wrong on this issue, but I have never read anything that says they want to stop the summit because Obama spoke. Do you have a quote somewhere.. I could have missed it?
No, they just protest the ones that they think can get them some media attention. Ever since Operation Rescue lost their tax exempt status for their crimes they’ve had to put in extra time begging for money.
Doug…
can you do the same for Phelps, we Christians, and most everyone else would applaud the effort!
The Phelps haven’t ever broken the law as far as I know. They just irritate Christians by pointing out their beliefs for what they are.
Interestingly, as OR lost its tax exempt status, any ‘donations’ would thus be nondeductible.
Operation Rescue doesn’t make it a point to tell people they are no longer tax exempt. So people probably still donate and write those donations as deductible therefore getting them in trouble with the IRS. As long as Troy gets more money to buy more houses he doesn’t care.
Ah, fleettwood.
That was satire
If the Republican God, Reagan, hadn’t covered up the existence of AIDS for as long as he did, maybe it wouldn’t be as rampant throughout the world as it is.
If Bush didn’t insist on the money sent NOT being used for condoms and education, maybe AIDS wouldn’t be spreading like wildfire in other countries. Spreading by way of heterosexuals.
THANK YOU RD for pointing that out. The same people that Operation Rescue backs are anti-education, anti- birth control of ANY kind, INCLUDING condoms. Birth control could at least minimize the number of kids being born with AIDS- but NO! They can’t have that. Obama has every right to be at that Summit.
Fleets enema, your comment about not having compassion shows how very ignorant and full of yourself you are on this topic.
Ignorant? I don’t have AIDS.Most people in America who have it are the ignorant ones.”We know what causes it. We know how to avoid it.”The End
Sex is one cause of the spread of AIDS.
fleet probably has little difficulty avoiding sex. Or is it sex that avoids him?
Help! jr has inflicted a mortal wound on the fleettster
Fleets, we’re talking WORLD AIDS here, not just USA. And shame on you for saying those with AIDS are ignorant. Sex is ONE way, there are many others.
Good one JR. I have little doubt that Fleets has never had any sort of sexual contact at all.
I’m talking USA here. “Sex is one way, there are many others”.Any of them less ignorant? Sticking a dirty needle in your arm?The compassion train has stop for Africa, also. Enough is enough.
I go easy on you most of the time fleet. Quite frankly, your posts don’t really rate a response at all.
“We know what causes it. We know how to avoid it.”
This was the prevailing attitude when AIDS was first discovered among homosexuals in the 1980’s. Homosexual sex at THAT time being the implied “We know what causes it”.
There were even those and still are who saw AIDS as a sort of divine retribution against gays. They did not just dismiss the disease as something that did not affect them. THEY cheered the virus.
Of course, Ryan White never had homosexual or any other sex. He died of AIDS as the result of a contaminated blood transfusion.
Imagine if pig headed reasoning such as fleet offers had prevailed. How much more prevalent would that disease be now?
Let us remember that AIDS is a virus. Viruses are capable of mutation.
SO it is worth it to remember the history with this disease. It was not gay disease then. It is not an African disease now. It is a serious threat.
The link below is a blog posting written by a researcher who is among a growing number of scientists, from other blogs, etc., I have read, who are beginning to doubt a causal connection between HIV and AIDS.

By providing this link, I neither agree nor disagree with the contents thereof. It is offered for the reader’s consideration.
I think the more appropriate statement for Fleets to make- is that HE no longer cares about AIDS, that HE believes the ones who get it are ignorant, and that HE won’t do anything to help prevent the spread of it.
jr-Everything you said did not refute anything I said. My comments had nothing to do with Ryan White or women who get AIDS from sex with their “bi-sexual” partners or babies who are born with AIDS. It has everything to do with people who contract AIDS when they know how NOT to get it, but still do. That is ignorant. Defend it if you like. The divine retribution part is just stupid and not my style. If one caught polio or TB or Malaria or some other disease with risky behavior, would the same “compassion” be granted? If you knew how to avoid those diseases, but didn’t, wouldn’t you be “ignorant”?p-mom-Yes, I will do something to prevent AIDS and I will guess that you do too. The causes of AIDS are well known. And we know them. All we have to do is not be “ignorant”.One more thing. If you knew that your lover was HIV positive, would you have sex with him/her? I’m not sure if there is a condom big enough for that. Do you put condoms on your fingers too?
“Do you put condoms on your fingers too?”
What the hell kind of stupid comment was that? AIDS/HIV is transmitted through bodily fluids such as blood and semen. It is transmitted to a child if the mother has the virus in her bloodstream during pregnancy. It is transmitted to the patient if the blood transfusion is contaminated.
AIDS is not a joke about gay people – it is a health crisis that will eventually affect all of us, if it hasn’t thus far.
Christ, Fleet, let go of your homophobia and realize that the AIDS pandemic is a worldwide problem that all of us should be concerned about.
ws-This has absolutly nothing to do with homosexuals. I’m libertarian that way. I don’t care about what gays do. It has everything to do with personal responsibility. We know what causes it, we know how to avoid it. Again, this has nothing to do with Ryan White or blood transfusions.P.S. What if you have a cut on your finger? Do you put a condom on it?
Didn’t I just see on the news that some guy was prosecuted for knowingly spreading AIDS?
Fleet, unfortunately, everyone is not responsible, whether about sex or about other things. It’s a fact we have to live with. But it doesn’t help a bit when our own President doesn’t take responsibility for his mistakes, and our Government puts people in places of importance that have the power to help teach responsibility, especially where sex is considered.
Practice what you preach would be a good rule to live by.
rd-Re-read my post. It has nothing to do with the accidental victims. The President has nothing to do with this. It’s not the goverment’s responsibility to teach responsibility. Everybody already knows how to avoid the risky behavior that can lead to HIV/AIDS, they just choose to ignore it. Oh well, Darwin rules.
Humans will always engage in risky behavior no matter if it’s sex, smoking, overeating, whatever. Mother Nature has a way of thinning out the herd. This is unfortunate, but it’s been the reality ever since the earth was formed.More than 500,000 Americans die from smoking related illness each year, but all we can do is warn each other of the dangers. The rest is up to the individual. Education and personal responsibility is the best we can do. The reason Africa has such a horrible problem with AIDS is partly due to ignorance and culture. You can get the word out, but whether or not people choose to make healthy decisions is mostly up to them.
Amen, Mary, amen. But why do folks get so breathless about this subject. Like many things, smoking included, we have a choice on how we die. AIDS too.
Ewwwww Mary,
LOOK who is standing in agreement with you! Pretty seedy company if you ask me.
I’m more than a little tired of the “personal responsibility” screed. IT is only applicable given an even playing field in the first place.
True JR, but most of what we talked about IS personal choice. Maybe part of the consequences of risky sexual behavior is watching your innocent child die from a disease you gave him. Tragic, but that’s the reality. Many diseases can be predisposed with certain behaviors….like diabetes, heart disease, cancer, etc. There are choices we can make to lessen our chance of getting a disease, but sometimes we get it anyway, no matter how well we take care of ourselves. Life’s not fair, but no one ever promised that it would be.Two people I care very much for have AIDS, but that doesn’t make me feel more sorry for them than my loved ones who have died from cancer or heart disease. In the end, we’re all vicitms of our own human frailty and personal choices.
More from Dr. Culshaw; this is data based, and provides food for thought for those who are certain they “know” what causes AIDS.

Again, by posting the link, I am not endorsing the position expressed; it is offered for the purpose of provoking thought, and perhaps, discussion.
