The old question of whether Sen. Sam Brownback flip-flopped on abortion came up again last week. During a teleconference Thursday, Brownback said that he has always been pro-life. But that’s not how many people remember it. Even state GOP chairman Tim Shallenburger said that Brownback was not pro-life when he was elected to Congress in 1994. It wasn’t until Brownback ran for the Senate in 1996, and faced a moderate in the GOP primary, that he became identified as a social conservative, Shallenburger told the Lawrence Journal-World.
Now Brownback is a leading champion on life issues, including stem cell research, so does the past matter? It does in that as a likely presidential candidate, Brownback can expect more scrutiny and skepticism about whether his shift to the right was motivated by conversion or by political calculation.

No! It’s only necessary to believe in a position if it can get you more votes.
It doesn’t matter … Brownback has no resume that would make him a viable candidate. Can someone, please, give him a real job?
If your Republican, that disqualifies you!
Can you leftist ever admit any Republican that you thought was ok, competient and a good representative? Or are you just blinded by political bias and hate?
Ok! If that is you JWink! Please stop it.
I ask a legitimate question and either JWink or some other punk decided to use my name and post something without my consent.
If you have any balls and self-respect you wouldn’t do it again.
You broke the rules!
Joe Williams, I would work for, give money to, and vote in David Adkins any day, any election, any year.
If there were more republicans like David, I would support them completely.
JWink, Let see the Democratic front runner is a past first lady of Arkansas, past first lady of the US, current state senator from NY and this makes her more qualified than Sam Brownback because….. I myself feel that Brownback isn’t qualified in the things that count also but just hate it when the left uses the argument you just used but doesn’t apply it to their own candidates like Clinton and Obama.
ksfarmgrrl. I had the pleasure of meeting with Mr. Adkins. He is pretty cool. I voted for him in the AG primary race.
Actually! Hillary is very well qualified to be President. She’s very smart, actually proposes ideas, she sticks to her guns, she an excellent campaigner and fundraiser, and she isn’t a bad public speaker.
I just disagree with most of what Hillary Clinton stands for and her policy agendas. I wouldn’t vote for her just because she’s a Democrat or a woman. Just I disagree with her on too many issues.
“Now Brownback is a leading champion on life issues, including stem cell research”
Uh no. Brownback opposes potentially life saving or improving stem cell research in favor of protecting the right to throw away blastocysts. How that is pro life you tell me.
Joe don’t feed the trolls.
To answer your “Can you leftist ever admit any Republican that you thought was ok, competient and a good representative?”
No. I know of no Republican I could feel that way about.
That’s an honest answer JR. I can respect that.
For the most part they’re all whores. What do Hillary and Sam have in common? Their prices are so low! :)
I’ll modify that actually.
I respect Teddy Roosevelt a lot. But he ultimatley got fed up with the GOP. Jim Jeffords is another example of a Republican who knew his party was lost and bailed.
Hi Joe, welcome to the club of being maliciously trolled. Anyway, to the question at hand. f Brownback has had a legitimate change in position there is nothing wrong with that. New evidence often can lead to such a change. In this case I suspect he has not really changed position so much as changed focus. By that I mean that the issue had not come up before and so he had not addressed it a lot. So, I’ll take him at his word on this until I see something saying otherwise.
Brownback has also embraced other aspects of his faith – “feed the hungry and clothe the naked”. While there are those on the Right who are upset with him on that I respect him for it.
Joe, I hope you join us in calling for the Eagle to institute some sort of registration so we know who we are ‘talking’ to.
I’ll second that, Ben. I don’t know whether it was a full moon or what yesterday, but the trollers, loonies and assorted whackos were certainly out in force, and, for some reason, which I haven’t figured out yet, were all after your ass !?! After they tired of being after mine, that is … because I got so bored, I wouldn’t come out and play anymore, I suppose. But I’m sorry for you, Ben. You sure as hell did nothing to attract their idiotic wrath.
rm – yea, I noticed they went after you as a “liberal” – I thought that was rather amusing.
I have my own theory about them which is similar to the morons who feel a need to trash people’s Christmas decorations.
Most of us change our core beliefs at one point, from experience, from education, from …I dunno. I don’t ever see myself changing, I changed earlier in my life, from rabidly anti-choice to pro-choice. But I do know others who have converted later in life.
It seems highly suspect to change a view after coming into office.
OH did anyone see that Tammy Faye and Jim Baker’s kid is hosting an ANTI- religion show? HAHA!
PMom: No, I did not see that! That is another of those “life is funnier than fiction” deals. Let’s see: That would make the kid a “born, reborn, born again, partial birth athetist, waiting on the rupture”, perhaps?
Was this the Baker’s boy or the girl hosting that show? If it is the boy, the last time I saw him on television he was married and a preacher somewhere.
I always found it strange that if a virgin can be made a virgin again (like some religious fanatics believe) – anything is possible in the nutty world of religious zealots.
Sunny: I don’t know, but mentioning this in a telecon with a friend this morning, he said he saw it on GMA this morning. And that it was the boy, and he was “covered with tattoos”. And being a retired cop, I’m sure he wasn’t exaggerating, having seen enough people to know the difference between a couple of tattoos and “covered with…”. That’s all I know about it. :)
Sunny: If this “re-viginizing” deal worked, Gallachia would have the patent and quit killing heart patients! Follow the $$$$$$$$$$$$$!
It’s the son. And covered with tattoos and piercings. Looks like he RAN the other way far and fast.
PMom: Well, if doesn’t work out for him, I guess he could work (behind the scenes, of course) for Sam !!! Laying out the “spin” for “changing horses in mid-stream”, maybe?
“It seems highly suspect to change a view after coming into office.”
mom, as I recall, Al Gore was strongly pro-life earlier in his political career, when he was in the House. But I don’t recall that an issue was made of his politically expedient transformation.
Out: How can you believe ANYTHIMG Algore or Sambrownnose purport? I gave you a hell of of a lot more credit than that! They’re both fucking morons, & you know it !!
rm
The use of the attack “Algore” betrays you as a follower of Rush Limbaugh. This makes YOU a moron.
No, JR, it betrays me as knowing that he is dumber than GWB. As if that is possible? What next Genius? Billary, AGAIN? Don’t think so, and I’ll be kind enough to not call you names, as much as I’d like to !
rm,Take the high road. Attaboy. JR isn’t worth the effort.

You need to get on to this link and listen to what Jay Bakker has to say. He is part of a not so new movement of Evangelical Christianity. Christianity sure isn’t about how you look or your social or economic status. Look at the original disciples of Christ. Really I’d encourage you to click this link and listen to his sermons. It may change your life.

Hit a nerve eh?
Dittoheads are such easy game! And I had such high hopes for ya. My mistake. You repukes are all alike. You need not hold your fire on me. I’ll afford you the same.
Hey at least you’ve got the despicable golfnut in your corner. Yeah that troller and fornicator knows all about the high road.

Link to Jay Bakker’s church.
MrK,That’s one hilarious dude. And he is the SPITTIN IMAGE of Daddy Jim….sans tattoos, of course.
He is totally right on though. We don’t put our faith in people (like his parents). It’s in Christ. Are we defending Christ or Christianity? Will enforcing the ideals of a pre-packaged Christian lifestyle help people feel the love of Christ? Do we believe that our lifestyles hold more truths than Jesus? Are we trying to drive people to Christianity or lead them to Christ?
Kia I clicked the link you put up, and it kept opening windows like a porn site.
No, I”m not interested in listening to anyone preach, especially a tatooed freak like him. And I thought Tammy Faye’s makeup was hideous lol.
No, I”m not interested in listening to anyone preach, especially a tatooed freak like him.
From everything you have said about Christians? Are you serious with that statement?
Click on his church and read the ‘idea’ part. I know there are churches in Wichita like that.
Is he a free thinker type? Well, ok, but it’s still Christianity.
I didn’t click on it, was skeered to.
I think you’d be surprised.
From the website;Religion KillsReligion is a false perception of holiness that focuses on law and kills the true message of Christ. Jesus had much to say about the religious who put the law before his true message.
“…How terrible it will be for you experts of religious law! For you crush people beneath impossible religious demands, and you never lift a finger to ease the burden.” Luke 11:46
“How terrible it will be for you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you are careful to tithe even the tiniest part of your income, but you ignore the important things of the law- justice, mercy, and faith. You should tithe, yes, but you should not leave undone the most important things. Blind Guides! You strain your water so you won’t accidentally swallow a gnat; then you swallow a camel.” Matthew 23:23-24
Jesus came and declared that the most important law was “You must love the Lord with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind; and love your neighbor as yourself.” (Matthew 22:37.39) Religion ignores the reasons behind this being the most important commandment and only focuses on the exterior and works as a way to get close to God. It is religion that not only kills the true message of hope Christ taught but also has held back the lost from understanding the true meaning of Christianity.Anyone who views Christians in a box really should click on the link to the website. Check out the message board for some of the staff and members I guess (?) views of politics. It will definitely change the way you think of Christians/Christianity.
Ok Kia, just for you I went and looked. And yes, it was nice and I was surprised. I wish him well, however, I don’t think he had to look the part of being disturbed in order to reach the disturbed.
I think he’s exactly where I am, that none of it matters in religion, just your relationship with God. He just believes in Jesus as God and I don’t.
He is not a Christian. He is a hypocrite, a heretic, and a blasphemer. Not unlike his evangelical Christian parents.
good evening.
Thank you Mom :-)
I don’t know his story but I’m guessing that what you said earlier was true in that he probably did run away from his upbringing for a while but found his way back to what he knew as Truth.
Why Will? Lets hear it.
Those of us raised in really strict religious upbringings usually go one way or the other.
Me- well, you know which way I went. But some of those beliefs NEVER leave you.
BTW when living in Wichita I did attend a church simlar to that meeting in Old Town for a while. This was WAYYY back in like 1998 though.
I’d really be interested in knowing more “where you come from” mom.
I was raised Jehovah’s Witness.
Awww. I have my thoughts there but don’t want to offend you anymore than I already probably have ;-)
You haven’t offended me- YET LOL.
Feel free to email me offlist if you like.
OK.Well as a disclaimer I have a client who I count as a friend that is a JW and a great guy. However what I know of the faith (which is limited) is it is a cult.I could go into detail but might save that for a later time.
Not anymore cultish than any other religion.
Ok see there I must have struck an offended nerve..lol
LOL nope, still not offended. Just stating what I think.
It just all depends on what you believe is Truth I guess.
There is no doubt about it – JW is a cult.
David Adkins? You want more Republicans to be like David Adkins?
In the Ralph Nader 50 states project David Adkins was the poster child for political corruption in the state of Kansas.
He’s a national disgrace and some of you people want more Republicans like him? Why, so the voters will have more sleazy Republicans to be mad at?
Hate to break it to the Jesus freaks but Christianity, in it’s entirety, is a cult. Now go drink some Kool-aid.
gentleben,Why the dislike for Adkins? I’ve known him for years, and I’ve never considered him corrupt or out of line. He’s socially moderate – abortion rights, pro gay marriage – yet fiscally conservative.
Had we elected him in the AG primary in ‘02…
Ralph Nader isn’t much of a credible source. How is Adkins “sleazy”?
