Douglas Brinkley, director of the Roosevelt Center at Tulane University, cautions historians against rushing to declare President Bush the worst president ever. But, he argues, “it’s safe to bet that Bush will be forever handcuffed to the bottom rungs of the presidential ladder. The reason: Iraq.”
Meanwhile, Michael Lind of the New America Foundation wrote that Bush is only the fifth worst president. “In the White House Hall of Shame,” he wrote, “Bush comes behind four other Oval Officers whose policies were even more disastrous: James Buchanan (in photo), Andrew Johnson, Richard M. Nixon and James Madison.”

You’re right, which surprises me as to why JFK and LBJ aren’t in their for their quagmire in Vietnam in which over 58,000 Americans died for nothing.
He forgot Jimmah Carter. By far the worst president this country has ever had. Clinton should be on there too. Most of the public just hasn’t realized the long term damage Clinton did to this country.

Those that perpetually demand that the government do more for them (read: hand out more freebies) will continue to wallow in the mire of poverty and low-income until they realize (if ever) that our government isn’t Santa Claus.
I would suggest replacing Nixon (however much a crook, he did many things of a positive nature, IMHO, in the arena of foreign policy, e.g., opening relations with China) with the inestimable Warren G. Harding; or, has Teapot Dome ceased to be a scandal these days?
Reagan is truly a legend in the conservatives’ mind.
To everybody else, he mired the country into debt, fought and illegal and immoral war against the really threatening (sarcasm) Nicaragua and then lied his ass off about it, continually funded Star Wars which meant that kids in schools went hungry while the world’s biggest corporations got gov’t welfare.

And btw, when Reagan left office is was not as popular as Bill Clinton when he left office.
Having lived through Nixon though, I think GW is way worse than Nixon. Nixon just had the bad luck of almost getting impeached. He wasn’t likeable but he was smart, unlike the current resident of the White House, who is neither likeable nor smart.

Right now, the top 20% of wage earners in the US pay 80% of the federal income taxes, and the top 50% of all wage earners pay 97% of the federal income taxes.
So those of us in the upper 50% (anyone making about $45k or higher) would be paying for our healthcare plus for the bottom 50%. We’d be paying double.
PLUS, add the fact that the upper income earners are generally healthier and require less medical care (i.e. the lower 50% consumes 90% of the cigarettes).

When this country was founded, there was this controversial proposal to ALLOW representatives to be elected without regard to wealth or property holdings. JUST five minutes ago, was offered a job making more money, but with no benefits. I was working a different job that was going to take about 1/3 of my pay for health insurance. And I was going to pay it.
Why I’m taking a job with no benefits now? This new job has the potential to move up, where the job I have now does not.
And to think they JUST closed open enrollment for the healthplan at my husband’s job. I guess I’ll wait till next year, if they don’t raise the price out of our reach again.
I’m little unsettled that James Madison made one of the lists, though there was that unnecessary war with the U.K. Talk about a mixed legacy.

The wealthy in America do not want to admit this but the middle class keeps the country going. The wealthy may have the money but the middle class has the brains and backs to work in the companies that these wealthy say wouldn’t be there without their money. The Vietnam war was started by Eisenhower meddling into their business. JFK inherited the problem and tried to get out but someone shot him for it. LBJ was pushed into the corner by politicians that wanted the war to continue – so he had no backbone to stop it.
Nixon was just plain bad all around and Reagan was just a wolf in sheep’s clothing.
But George W. Bush takes the cake in the arena of bad presidents.

The Middle East has always been in conflict. When have these countries ever known peace? George W. Bush and his cronies wanted control of the oil and their way to get that was to invade Iraq. They used the 9/11 tragedy to somehow connect Saddam to terrorism and then got the Religious Right to handstamp everything with ‘God’ told Pat Robertson that he wanted George W. Bush to be president. So all the sheeple said ‘yes, go invade Iraq’.

Nixon ended Viet Nam. He also opened more colleges to minorities than any other president to date. He opened China. He started OSHA. Just plain bad? Someone needs to recheck history.

Not really. JFK lowered tax rates from about 90% to about 50%. Reagan cut into muscle by lowering far too much and creaed huge deficits as a result.

Actually, Clinton PARSED his answer during testimony in the Paula Jones lawsuit – which was a set up anyway. He answered truthfully that he had never had sexual relations with Monica Lewinski. Sexual relations were defined by the judge in the case as vaginal intercourse. Clinton did not VOLUNTEER that they had engaged in oral sex. A good defendant knows not to offer information that is not asked of him/her.
If he had been asked if Monica had performed oral sex on him and answered negatively, then you could make a case that he was a proven liar.

True, KIA, the US had stunning losses in the Civil War and WWII, but we didn’t have stalemate after almost FOUR YEARS.
The historical analogy doesn’t work–if this were WWII, the Nazis would have been defeated by now.
Instead the situation in Iraq gets worse.
This is an administration that had no plan for occupying Iraq. And they still don’t.
The goals of the Civil War and WW2 were clear. There is no recognizable goal in the illegal occupation of Iraq. A close comparison can be the illegal invasion of Mexico by America. The goal was simply to expand American territory. History gave that President his due as an imperialistic aggressor, so too will Bush get that same title.

Given the likely outcome of the War on Iraq – an endless regional conflict – I seriously doubt that history will judge Bush kindly.
In actuality, most likely history will judge Bush, the Sequel, even more harshly than we do now. In time, the truth will come out that Bush did not have good reason to attack Iraq and it will be recognized that his actions only exacerbated the unrest in the Middle East. Furthermore, his attacks on our Constitution and his rape of our Treasury will be seen after the full impact is fully known.
Additionally, history will show that Bush II was the most partisan of Presidents in the last one hundred years and certainly one of the most deliberately divisive. Knowing that he received a half a million fewer votes than did Al Gore, Bush proceeded as if he had won an overwhelming public mandate.
It is inevitable that society will eventually reject Bush’ right-wing Christian conservative ideals and Bush will be shown to be the last hold out against tolerance and understanding.
Bush has made a fool of himself while in office, much as he did while in private business and as Governor of Texas.
He has truly been the polar opposite of the Uniter, not the Divider that he claimed to be.
In time, history will prove that George W Bush has been the absolute worst president ever.

Not only has the GOP changed in recent decades at least one prominent Republian I knew has changed – and not for the better. Dennis Hastert was a solid ‘mainstream-conservative’ MidWest Republicans when I was involved in his first campaign for Congress a bit over two decades ago. He was a man of honor and fair play. Watching him as Majrity Leader in recent years; he is not the man I knew.
Part of that is Washington. I did not know the young Dan Glickman but I am told he also changed as he became part of the ’system’ in DC. I did know tiahrt many years ago; he has also changed. Just as Glickman was no longer a Kansan I don’t know that Todd is either.

That’s a long, long story Kia, but since Goof already knows and uses it against me… basically I was accused of cheating, but was proven innocent of that, but the day I was to graduate, I was given a failing grade on the basis of having the appearance of ‘unprofessional conduct’.

I told one particularly good kid – you need to go to college and get a degree because this is how our society is set up. But you need to do as much as you can while in and before college to give yourself some real world real marketable experience. Otherwise you are coming out of college with a degree and then have to learn something.
No it was a western Kansas community college (that has been in the news for some athletics corruption).
by the way, they’re right. There is no free healthcare. If you can’t afford it, they’ll garnish your wages to get it eventually.
