Edwards wants to be your president

John Edwards announced his 2008 presidential bid today in New Orleans, arguing against a troop surge in Iraq and in favor of ending poverty, guaranteeing health care and fighting global warming. It’s interesting that Edwards seems a viable 2008 candidate when his top of the ticket in 2004, John Kerry, does not. Edwards’ star is brightest in Iowa, where he came in second to Kerry in the 2004 Iowa caucus. But it’s not as if Edwards has gained more applicable job experience in the past two years. He’s still a much-maligned “trial lawyer” with a brief “record in the Senate that’s not very distinguished,” as Vice President Dick Cheney famously noted in their 2004 running mate debate.

Made the first official announcement on Fox News. Huh, Imagine that.

    Best of luck to him.

What a very objective little header you’ve written there Rhonda!

You might wanna button up dear. Your right wing is showing!

Edwards could be ok. He certainly seems to understand that there are at least two Americas. Even if he does occupy the more priviledged one.

Given the nature of the electoral college he is a more viable candidate than Hillary. Winning the presidential election is about winning the swing states. I would willing to bet a burger at Ty’s the democratic nominee will be a moderate Southern governor whose name hasn’t been mentioned in the same breath as president of the United States yet.

Edwards stance on immigration alone should make him ineligible for holding high office.

Woohoo! A scum-sucking trial lawyer as the potential Dimocrat nominee…

Sounds like fun. However, he won’t get the nod. Neither will Billary or Barack Osama, err..Osama Obama…err…

It’ll be someone out of no where…as always with the dims.

Sal – I just might take your bet (where is Ty’s?) – I’m still guessing midwest or southwest governor. Vilsack looks interesting right now.

On the other hand Republicans had no problem with a failed businessman with a history of corruption to be president. Edwards worked himself up from blue collar beginnings just like Bill Clinton. No wonder the conservatives hate him, he’s one of those self-made men who didn’t rely on an inheritance or government handouts like the Bush family.

A little parlor game: Come up with a Democratic candidate for president, declared or otherwise, that would be worse than the current resident of the White House.

    Obama – no

    Edwards – no

    Clinton – no

    Vilsack – no

    Clark – no

    Gore – no

    Biden – no

I’m not having much luck coming up with a Dem that would be worse than Bush.

    Any takers?

    Ben,

Ty’s is a Wichita experience that no one should miss. Be sure you have plenty of time to wait when you go.

I don’t think the Republican hatred of trial lawyers is going to fly any more as a reason to discount Edwards or any one else as a candidate. People have rights to protect themselves – a coporate agenda that takes that away will not be favored by a majority of Americans.

It has been a few years since I have been to Ty’s but the last I knew it was just west of Seneca on First (or maybe Second) steet.

I used to take my father there – he claimed that the burgers and fries with a cold bottle of soda was how such fare was served in the 1950’s. The food is not good for you, but man is it tasty.

Ty’s is an experience all should have. It is on Second street, I think just East of Seneca (but it’s been a while, about 3 years since I was last there). As Steven Davis says, the food isn’t good for you, but it is tasty. The fries, BTW, are made daily from freshly peeled and cut potatoes; no frozen stuff for Ty’s.

You’re right, Vaughn, it is east of Seneca. The food reminds me of that which is served up in that bar on Maple which is next to Star Lumber. Except, I think Ty’s food is better –tasting, not — for you.

I always have to laugh when the Republicans label John Edwards as being just a ‘trial lawyer’. Well what the hell are most of the Republlicans? Lawyers on top of lawyers.

If that is the only bad thing theRepublicans can muster up about Edwards, then the guy must be okay.

He wants to end poverty, guarantee access to health care, and slow down global warming….pretty lofty goals. I wonder, how does he plan to do it?

you might not want to open the can of worms on “personal responsibility” given that drug-using Rush, libel-monger Coulter, pedophile Mark Foley, pedophile enabler Dennis Hastert, scam artist Jack Abramoff, and gay hating gay evangalists are all on your side.

By definition, personal responsiblity would kind of include that we, as Republicans and Conservatives, are not responsible for the likes of those you mention Leave. We are responsible for ourselves, no one else.

John Edwards is a clone of Sam Brownback — no meaningful private sector employment, a kind of lawyer, no military background, an unhinged jaw that lets these fellows talk from wakeup, non-stop, until tucked back into bed at night.

John Edwards, unlike Sam Browback, does not seem to ram his personal religious views down everyone’s throat. It sounds like Edwards worked himself up from a middle class family to a rather impressive and successful law career.

Sam Brownback married money and has done what?

I don’t see the comparison between the two.

I certainly won’t be casting a vote for Edwards but I’ll say he seems to have more charisma in his little finger than Brownback has in his entire being. All I’ve seen of him is he’s a statue. From a Republican outside your home state, he’s not even on the radar.
