Brownback’s in — and a really long shot

It’s official, more or less: Kansas Sen. Sam Brownback is running for president. Or, as his new Brownback for President Web site puts it, "I am running for America — to be of service in a crucial time of trial." The first step in his "campaign of national renewal" is setting up an exploratory committee. Then he’ll visit 10 states in the next month, starting in Iowa on Tuesday. Brownback is an interesting candidate, compassionate and more complicated than his usual religious conservative label would suggest. The wonder is that he still read the midterm election results as a green light for his bid, and seems undeterred by polls showing he’s not widely known even among evangelicals.

Brownback’s run for President ought to have as much success as Geraldo Rivera’s search for Capone’s vault – a bunch of noise at first, a little suspense, but in the end, just empty space.

Having Brownback win the primary will insure that a Democrat will win the White House in 2008. I may just change parties to vote for Brownback in the primary so I can vote against him in the general election.

GAG- lets just run the pope or pat robertson again. If Brownback wins, our weekly press releases will consist of bible studies.

I would like to know why he had stock in the China Petroleum company? I read this in the article stating that he has decided to order his broker to divest all stocks of companies that do business with Darfur.

Doesn’t he believe in backing our own US countries in trying to develop alternative fuels? Why was he invested in China oil to begin with?

Brownback’s going to run long and hard in Iowa as a fellow farm-state twice-born advocate of a King James Version of the Constitution of the United States. Iowa Republicans, remember, voted for Pat Robertson for President in 1988. Sam the Sham will be the GOP front-runner for a week and will largely concede New Hampshire to McCain, concentrating on the next primary in almost-as-bat-shit-crazy-as-Brownback South Carolina. I can’t imagine Giuliani’s campaign having legs in GOP primaries, but he’ll have moderate money and will fight it out in New Hampshire and probably exact some damage from the “Straight Talk Express.” (With McCain as the front-runner, don’t count on him being as accessible to the media — i.e., “The Daily Show” — as he was in 2000.)

Expect surrogate “Christian” campaigns to get really down and dirty against Mitt Romney. Among Evangelicals, “Mormon” is just this side of “Satanist,” and the Double-Born play dirty; real dirty.

Evangelical “Christians” provide the margin-of-victory for Republicans these days. Pragmatic Republicans may be strong enough to achieve a nomination for McCain, but they’ll have to make a sop to the Holies; bingo, Sam’s on the ticket running for Vice-President. He’ll get a lot of lame “up close and personal” stories comparing him to Bob Dole…another Kansan who was the good soldier as a Veep nominee for Gerald Ford… and the superficial comparisons with Dole will tend to soften Brownback’s religious extremism as he shift-shapes into a nationally-known politico.

Brownback is bat-shit insane, but he’s not stupid. He’s no Dan Quayle. Unless he pulls off a gaffe (like, “…you’ll know them by their fruits,” which was a perfectly applicable Biblical reference that revealed Sam’s absolute tone-deafness to speaking to anyone but the choir), Brownback will emerge from 2008 in great shape for 2012.

If the Republicans thought the election was bad, just wait until the presidential campaign.

The evangelical Christians are going to be extra mean this time around. Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell went after John McCain the last time he ran and practically ran him out of the country. I look for a very big split in the GOP party and that may be good for the Democrats?

I hope McCain runs and that the extremist ‘religious’ right savages him again. Open up those wounds big time.

Sunny, the cynic (realist?) in me says if Sam wasn’t contemplating a presidential run, he wouldn’t have ordered his broker to take the action stated, and would continue to enjoy the higher returns from the China oil investment.

hmmm, I feel that McCain is the one Republican that can easily win, assuming he can gain the nomination, which will require a hard right turn by him to capture the base. McCain is a Conservative; however, a bit more like Barry Goldwater than most these days. If the ‘religious right’ (which, to borrow a phrase, is neither) savages him in the primaries, then he is removed as a factor, making 2008 much more competitive IMHO. I think that’s kida what you’re saying.

I don’t think there is any “if” the RR savages McCain – they will do it again just like they did before.

Either the GOP has to keep their fringe Righties in line or they run the chance of losing the president in 2008.

Either way, Sam Brownback just doesn’t look like anything but a little choir boy to me. But once the magnifying glass comes into play, his personal and business life may not be all that pure.

No link here but there is a suggestion that Mit Romney may have employed illegal aliens.

This does NOT help Brownback. Nothing can help Brownback. His candidacy is hopeless.

Let’s see if we can find Sam some voters shall we?

Well, he’s not gonna inspire anyone who isn’t voting already. Brownback couldn’t inspire a frog to jump off a hot rock.

    Who’s left?

Well NO democrat voter is gonna embrace him.

Now he’s down to about 60% of people who vote.

OPPS! Sam is anti-choice and anti stem cell research! There went ALL the moderates!

SO he’s now down to Republicans.

YIKES! Brownback wants amnesty for illegal aliens and an open border!

(At this point, many evangelical Republicans heads start to hurt)

    SO what’s left?

Brownback is the candidate of the evangelical Christian who wants amnesty and open borders. I’m not sure but I’m guessing the memebership of that group could fit in a modest elevator.

KAKE 10 TV of Wichita just reported the results of their poll questioning if Sam Brownback should run for President.

The answer according to their TV viewers: 72% voted NO on Sam Brownback. So, cut him loose and forget him.

Brownback has the same chance of becoming president that my german shepherd has to win the Kentucky Derby.

He is either delusional or relishes the thought of being another sacrifical lamb for the GOP, ala Bob Dole. Only the freakiest of Jesus freaks would vote for Brownback, the rest of the nation is tired of the theocratic rhetoric and soldier of god BS.
