As contentious as things get on Capitol Hill, it’s nice to be reminded sometimes that they could be worse. Mexico’s Congress experienced three days of fistfights and sit-ins leading up to Friday’s swearing-in of new President Felipe Calderon, whose July 2 election win is still being contested by opponent Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador and his leftist supporters. Imagine Harry Reid, Mitch McConnell, Nancy Pelosi and John Boehner shoving, shouting and wrestling one another. The noisy dissent continued as Calderon quickly took the oath. California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, among the observing dignitaries, quipped: “It’s good action.”

Happens in Taiwan, also.
Some people just have more fun than we do.
I’d love to see our congress emulate Britain’s House of Commons. Not only would we get to hear and see Cheney telling others to “go fuck themselves,” we’d probably see others doing the same. It’d be worth watching the proceedings every day…at least for a while.
Would calling this cultural be PC?
When Cheney used the f word, he was held up like a beacon of truth and light. But when a Democrat uses it against a Republican, all kinds of nasty hate-filled names comes out of the Republican’s mouth.
Yeah, the Mexicans and Taiwanese get all the good television shows!
The Mexicans are showing how free citizens fight a crooked election.
They put us to shame.
The election was running Oberador ahead until 2 AM when the districts start reporting 1,000 to one against him.
Not even a good attempt at cover-up.
Capn: Just a question. Is this new guy any worse than Vincente Fox? I’m not prodding you, just asking. I don’t know much about him at all, except he is labeled a “conservative”, whatever that means in Mexico. Hell, I didn’t even know they were having an election, until the day it happened.
At least Mexical liberals put up a fight when they are screwed over by the conservatives!
RM–Conservative in Mexico is way more liberal than conservative here.
From what I’ve heard, he’ll be about the same as Fox. Vincente F. is on his side.
Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador is a leftist in the mold of Hugo Chavez, without the sulfur. Calderon is, from reports, a hardline capitalist in the mold of GWB.
South and Central America is trending hard left, to the socialist point of view, with many countries viewing natural resources as being the “property” of the nation as a whole, as opposed to being something that the government can “sell” to private industry.
The socialist POV is becoming a growing movement south of the Rio Grande. The Mexican Presidential election was a loss for the movement, but it is an inescapable tide that cannot be resisted.
Calderon is/was the choice of Bush’ Washington, but he is likely to be ineffectual in office. His base is even smaller than that of Bush.
With all that is happening in Iraq, we sometimes lose sight of what is happening in this hemisphere. Socialism/leftist politics are becoming the norm.
I, for one, applaud the move towards a more populous oriented society south of us.
But, then again, I am a commie bastard – or so they say…..
OK. Again, apologizing for my ignorance of the situation down there, and appreciating the input, does this mean the “illegal alien” problem is going to get better or worse? Or SSND ?
The illegal immigration problem is going to get MUCH worse over the next few years. With the “defeat” of the populous candidate, there will be just that much less hope for the Mexican population.
In Mexico, the “ruling class” has won/retained the reins of power, giving them every incentive to leave and find a better future in America, legally or otherwise.
This is not good news for the US, regardless of what Bush may think.
BTW – I am not one of the “shoot to kill” opponents of illegal immigration. Borders make little difference when you have no hope.
The best way to stem the tide of immigration from the south is to improve conditions there. I’m not talking about handouts but rather economic development. Resource development in particular could serve both to supply our needs and to improve conditions there. I would much rather buy oil from Mexico (and Peru, etc) than from Osama.
Ben, the answer to almost any problem is to provide economic opportunity for any group of people that is looking for a future. The same applies for our own people. Having the “opportunity” to flip burgers for $5.75 an hour hardly qualifies for opportunity.
That having been said, I agree that Mexican economic opportunity is the solution to the issue of illegal immigration. Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador would have been the best choice for Mexico in that regard. The capitalistic agenda of Calderon will only exacerbate the situation. His policies favor the already rich, much as do the policies of GWB.
Shades of Florida 2000?
I think so……
A little information about Mexico: Mexico City is considered the world’s largest city with more than 30,000,000 people. Where do you suppose many of those people want to move to escape the agony of poverty living in Mexico City’s slums? I agree with Ben Huie, the U.S. needs to do something enormous immediately to help alleviate their desperate situation.
You would have thought they were in one of the local bars on Broadway…they seem to bring this same cheezy act pretty much whereever they lite…you would think their legislators would refrain from acting like illegals BEFORE they leave the country.
At least they could be satisified with just putting some money in their freezer like our guys do.
Wonder if any of them ended up stuffed in a barrel out back.??
