After Sen. Sam Brownback had concluded his interview Sunday on ABC’s “This Week With George Stephanopoulos” by suggesting he’d say more soon about a 2008 presidential run, the conservative Kansan’s chances were debated on the roundtable.
Columnist George Will observed that there is room for a Ronald Reagan conservative in the GOP primary, “but they don’t grow on trees. If you want potato chips, you increase the demand for potato chips. Someone makes potato chips. You can’t just say, ‘We demand a Ronald Reagan’ and Ronald Reagans appear, with due respect to Mr. Brownback.”
Columnist E.J. Dionne noted that “what’s striking is the thinness of the crop on the conservative side of the Republican Party, which is why I think Sam Brownback is perfectly smart to try to fill that void. There are really only two candidates there that I can see right now. One is Brownback. The other is Mitt Romney of Massachusetts. Very interesting candidates.” He added: “Is Romney of Massachusetts going to grab the evangelical and conservative heart? Well, we don’t know that, so Brownback has as good a chance as anyone of occupying that space.”
Democratic strategist Donna Brazile suggested the Kansan would seem to be a good fit for the Iowa caucuses. “I think he’s someone that you should look at in terms of the early states. He’s someone that I believe has broad base appeal,” she said. And when someone at the table observed the glee with which Brownback said he was doing a December event with Democratic sensation Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., Brazile added: “Guess who’s coming to dinner all over again.”

Kansas just doesn’t look insane enough so let’s have cult member, penis police Brownback represent us.
I’m astounded that inside-the-Beltway pundits consider Mitt Romney an attractive candidate for evangelical Republicans.
The God Squad hates Mormons and will get as ugly as it takes to attack the apostate Romney.
Iowa went for Pat Robertson in 1986, remember. The caucuses are ripe for grassroots church-by-church campaigning among people who are likely to come out of the woodwork for a Dark Horseman of the Apocolypse.
Sam (the Sham) will be a non-entity in New Hampshire but a likely front-runner in South Carolina. He’ll get out of the Southern primaries with enough clout to be a player in forming the ultimate GOP ticket.
Brownback is running for the Vice-Presidential nomination. The GOP tends to elevate Veeps (and nominees) to the top of the ticket. Nixon, Ford, Bush the Elder, Bob Dole… And everyone in the Republican Party knows right-wing “Christians” amount to the GOP’s margin of (slim) victories in 2000 and 2004.
Sam was talking to God the other night and asked.
“God, will a woman ever be President?”
God said, “No Sam not in your life time.”
Then Sam smiled and said, “God, will I ever be President?”.
And God said, ” No Sam, not in my life time!”.
He’d make a great president!
E.J. Dionne and Donna Brazille do not want what is best for Republicans. Do not listen to them. They are liars and deceivers.
And you’re better??
Why yes, gster, yes I am.That was too easy.
No, I think it’s a case that the question was too difficult.
Good one.
Is there any solid evidence that Brownback is a member of Opus Dei? Is there any solid evidence that Opus Dei even exists – outside of Dan Brown novels and “-watch” internet sites???
The odds on hell freezing over are better than Brownb-LACK being President. It’s hard to imagine that anyone could be less prepared than Hillary, but there he is. Send him to the Middle East — he could prostylize the bad guys to “death by boedom”.
IMO Monkeyhawk is wrong in his opinion regarding Mitt Romney’s status with the religious right. It is not and never has been a question of a candidate’s religion. It is a matter of positions on the issues. And Romney is solid conservative all the way. He has the resume and the leadership abilities. I think that there is a very good chance that he will be the Republican nominee.
I went to an Evangelical Christian College and believe me, evangelicals hate any religion that is not of their fundamental, narrow view version. And I know they don’t believe Mormons will ever get to Heaven.
So why would they get behind Romney for president? They are not about to vote for a president that they believe is going to Hell.
I left the religion because of the hatred I saw and that was back in the late 70’s. The Evangelical Movement has only gotten worse since then.
Hey the Eagle got a new pic of Sam.
That’s about all that is new here.
Brownback has no chance even among his own party. Witness the posts here.
Only kooks like Brownback
Yes, Steven, Opus Dei exists.

While reading Brown’s books, I did a search, and there was much talk about the existence of Opus Dei. They have a huge organization in NYC and members were interviewed during the early months of the release of The DaVinci Code. Most stated that the use of the cilice and other self-flagellation was minimal and determined by each person.
Check out Dan Brown’s website for links, too. http://www.opusdei.org/
It might be interesting to note that Brown’s first book, Angels & Demons, introducing the character of Robert Langdon (played by Tom Hanks in DVC), involves the Illuminati. The movie is now in production.
I’ve also wondered about Brownback’s involvement with the Opus Dei group. Why did Brownback convert to Catholicism but yet his entire family didn’t and he still attends church with his family in their church?
I’m all for freedom of religion but I find this point interesting to think about. Just why would he belong to the Catholic Church and attend his old church at the same time?
Perhaps to get more voters? Or perhaps there is a bigger reason?
It is way too much fun to hate Brownback. Brownback’s chances are slim – BUT – this is a relay, not a simple race. Brownback will go as far as he can to gather the attention and liking of the religious conservatives….and then when it’s time to pass the baton – he endorses – John McCain…and the religious conservatives will do as they are told and they will vote for McCain – because Sam told them to.It’s a sick mess.
Here’s another point against Brownback’s sanity, or is it just that he’s a jerk. He is preventing a woman from being a judge because she attending a ceremony for her friend of 20 years.

Just knowing a lesbian is a crime in Brownback’s book.
“Just knowing a lesbian is a crime in Brownback’s book.”
Ain’t that the goddamn truth.
Sick – and not in a good way.
Didn’t Condi just a month or so ago also attend a ceremony for a gay friend.
Brownback is more and more making a fool out of himself. The Centrist party is aiming at common sense government, religious fanatics in government is a complete opposite of the Centrist party support.
Augh.
Maybe these Religious zealots will actually believe they can win the presidency with Sam Brownback and break off and form their own little perfect party?
That would certainly scare the rest of Americans to go vote!
Yawn. . .if Brownback even makes it to the Kansas caucus (probably the only one he could win), I’ll be surprised. As I recall, Pat Robertson won Alaska or something.
His effect will be primarily to screw up the GOP platform. This may be a good thing.
I like Sam Brownback and respect the humanitarian stances that he has taken. I think he is a good Senator. At this point though, he is not presidential material. VP? Well maybe, depending on who is at the top of the ticket.
brownslak cares nothing about anything but his name. Did you ever watch his commericals when he was running against Docking…He believes women should be barefoot and pregnant and available to every whim of the man.
I hope he does run, and makes the general…it will be fun watching any dem beat the socks off of him
Please spell his name right. It is Sam Brownhole. Not Brownback, BrownHOLE. Long “O:, and the “e” is silent, just like the “P” in PRick Santorum.
Sam Brownhole. Embarrassment to any thinking Kansan.
THINGS THE WORLD KNOWS ABOUT KANSAS:
1. Dorothy, Toto, etal,2. In Cold Blood,3. Fred Phelps,4. State School Board,5. and now, Sam Brownback.
Yikes! He is embarrassing! Go look at him on youtube.
