Two newspapers’ unexpected choices

There have been few surprises among Kansas newspapers’ endorsements this season. Here are two:
The Lawrence Journal-World endorsed Gov. Kathleen Sebelius and Rep Jim Ryun, R-Topeka, but chose not to endorse either candidate for attorney general, saying, “It’s hard to scrape through all the mud being slung to get to basics. Wipe off the candidate you prefer and mark your ballot for him.”
The Garden City Telegram endorsed Democrat and local businessman John Doll (in photo) over popular incumbent Rep. Jerry Moran, R-Hays, saying, “The problem is that Moran joins other Republicans in Congress who must shoulder blame for deteriorating conditions in Iraq.”

What about publishers making endorsements, or receiving appointments, but not mentioning that in an endorsement?

Junction City Daily Union Publisher Contributes to Democratic Party and Candidates But Fails to Mention that in Paper’s Political Endorsements?

    Waah Meadowlark.

Anyway, what’s wrong with someone endorsing Doll? Moran votes over 90% of the time along party lines, he’s rabidly anti-choice, even against family planning and birth control, and the only time his nice side comes out is when he’s campaigning. The few good votes he’s made in office don’t stack up to the many pro Bush ones. He’s one of the religious right, and he’s got to go.

    Subject: Vote Democratic ????

Probably by now you’ve seen the Democrats’ latest campaign slogan:”A New Direction For America — Vote DEMOCRATIC!”*

Perhaps we should analyze this promise.

The stock market is at a new all-time high and America’s 401K’s are back.A new direction from there means what?

Unemployment is at 25 year lows.A new direction from there means what?

Oil prices are plummeting.A new direction from there means what?

Taxes are at 20 year lows.A new direction from there means what?

Federal tax revenues are at all-time highs.A new direction from there means what?

The Federal deficit is down almost 50%, just as predicted over last year.A new direction from there means what?

Home valuations are up 200% over the past 3.5 years.A new direction from there means what?

Inflation is in check, hovering at 20 year lows.A new direction from there means what?

Not a single terrorist attack on US soil since 9/11/01.A new direction from there means what?

Osama bin Laden is living under a rock in a dark cave, having notsurfaced in years, if he’s alive at all, while 95% of Al Queda’s top dogsare either dead or in custody, cooperating with US Intel.A new direction from there means what?

Several major terrorist attacks already thwarted by US and British Intel, including the recent planned attack involving 10 Jumbo Jets beingexploded in mid-air over major US cities in order to celebrate theanniversary of the 9/11/01 attacks.A new direction from there means what?

Just as President Bush foretold on a number of occasions, Iraq wasto be made “ground zero” for the war on terrorism — and just as PresidentBush said they would, terrorist cells from all over the region are arrivingfrom the shadows of their hiding places and flooding into Iraq in order toget their faces blown off by US Marines rather than boarding planes andheading to the United States to wage war on us here.A new direction from there means what?

Moreover, bear in mind that all of the above occurred in the face of the1999 tech crash, the epidemic of corporate scandals throughout the 90’s,and the 9/11/01 terrorist attacks on NYC years in the planning , whichcollectively sucked 24 trillions dollars and 7.8 million jobs out of the USeconomy even before G. W. Bush had time to unpack his suitcases in the WhiteHouse. It’s easy to attempt to discredit, disgrace and defame our commander inchief, George W. Bush; what’s not so easy to do is to refute irrefutable facts,no matter how they might try.

Do yourself and this country of ours a favor and don’t be

bent on hate and blame-shifting simply in the name of hate andblame-shifting. Take heed of reality, use your head and cast your votewisely in the upcoming elections.

The stakes are far too high today, as America’s very future, and yes, even its very survival is now at stake!

Yes, I said even our very survival is at stake.

It would be nice if the media is going to endorse candidates that they do it based on more than their view and opinion on an issue.

The problem with today’s media is they no longer have true investigative reporters and they have decided that because they can they will inform the public on their beliefs rather than what is truly news and information for the public to draw their own opinions. You have editorial boards for newspapers that sit in their offices thinking of ways to get their views across to the public but they really do not do any real investigation of an issue or story. They are no longer reporters. They want the public to think they are but they are not.

The media some how thinks they should tell the people what and how to think about a particular issue. They are afraid to provide both sides of a story because they want their opinion heard. They want the public to believe what they want them to believe.

The media is always trying to redesign itself because they are losing subscribers, viewers and listeners. When in reality if they would do what they are supposed to do people would want to subscribe, view and listen. The public does have minds and they are capable of making up their own opinions.

It would be nice to go back to the good days when the media was truly about the news; reporters really investigated a story and told it like it was.

It’s pretty tough to paint Moran with the brush of towing the party line. The guy has received more grief than any other Republican for voting AGAINST No Child Left Behind, AGAINST Medicare and AGAINST some of the tax increases for what it would do to our nation’s budget. Not to mention he’s the hardest working man in Congress. He’s never taken money from Abramoff and has been a critic of the war effort after visiting Iraq twice.

The Telegram can try to say that Kansas can do better. But if Moran loses, our state is the one who suffers.

At the state level:”Wagle said the first thing that needs to be done is to lower income taxes, eliminate the death tax, and increase the child tax credit.”This line is as old as the hills and they have been in the majority for too damn long and saying the same thing over and over.

The state republicans have been in the majority for a very long time. Once they are elected it becomes all about abortion, creationism ,not supporting public schools, unite against stem cell research and sex education which ultimately wastes valuable time.

Then they will want to do this again.

Beware: TABOR Is ComingAfter devastating government services in Colorado, the “Taxpayer Bill of Rights” threatens to spread.BY MICHAEL REBNE

This article is from the July/August 2005 issue of Dollars & Sense magazine.

In 1992, after tireless nagging by Grover Norquist and his minions at Americans for Tax Reform, Colorado voters amended the state constitution to strictly limit the government’s ability to raise revenue. The Taxpayer Bill of Rights, or TABOR, has forced Colorado to spend the last 13 years writing mandatory rebate checks to taxpayers, while vital education and human-service programs have been nearly choked to death. According to David Bradley and Nicholas Johnson at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP), for example, “between 1991 and 2003–a period in which the percentage of children who are uninsured declined nationally–the proportion of low-income children who lack health insurance in Colorado rose from 15% to 27%. Colorado now ranks 48th in its level of taxpayer support of colleges and universities, down from 35th in 1992.”

Despite the pain TABOR has caused in Colorado, some 23 states were facing similar initiatives at the close of 2004. But Norquist’s drive shows signs of floundering. “For businesses to be successful you need roads and you need higher education, both of which have gotten worse under TABOR and will continue to get worse,” Tom Clark of the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce told the Washington Monthly. “I’m a Republican,” Clark said, “but I made the decision not to give any money to the state party.” Likewise, Colorado Governor Bill Owens is having trouble garnering support from his own party’s legislators, most of whom know their constituents no longer believe TABOR is a good thing. The anti-TABOR movement, meanwhile, continues to gain momentum, as the story of Colorado’s misery begins to spread nationally.

    More:http://www.dollarsandsense.org/archives/2005/0705rebne.html

Yep we need to begin getting rid of Kansas neoconservatives who appear to take their orders from national and state level neoconservative think tanksthat support measures such as TABOR.

Gropups such as:Kansas Chamber of CommerceKansas Club for Growth – Established in Washington D.C. as Club for Growth by former Brownback chief of staff.

I considerTihart, Ryun,Kline,Barnett and Wagle neoconservatives NOT EVEN republicans.

I don’t know, ask the military commanders on the ground during that time.

    JM,

“I don’t know, ask the military commanders on the ground during that time.”

No, ask higher up. The commanders who passed thru there on April 3 and 10, 2003, did not even know about the high explosives in the bunkers. Their mission was the invasion, not securing the explosives.

    That’s despite IAEA’s warnings, before/after the invasion.

“You know ‘everything’ that happens isn’t the fault of one party or another.”

Whose fault was it for not sending enough troops, and not securing the explosives? If you don’t do your homework…

“I suppose you would like to blame famine and disease on Republicans as well, since you’ve covered war.”

Climate change may cause famines, more disease, etc (note Darfur). It’d be fair to blame Repubs for the portion of future problems they caused by blocking solutions to climate change.

Salaries are NOT up, poverty is up, and whatever happened to being a uniter and not a divider? This country is more polarized now that it seems we should just split in half.
