‘South Park’ kids hate !*#!!* extremists

The December issue of Reason, a libertarian magazine, has an interview with “South Park” creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone. The duo were asked why they hate both liberals and conservatives. Parker said that their show has a simple formula: pit extremists from opposite sides against each other, and then one of the fourth-grade kids observes, “You both remind me of each other.” Parker said: “The show is saying that there is a middle ground, that most of us actually live in this middle ground, and that all you extremists are the ones who have the microphones because you’re the most interesting to listen to, but actually this group isn’t evil, that group isn’t evil, and there’s something to be worked out here.”

South Park only has one problem.

    It’s not funny.

    Other than that, it’s great.

When I first saw South Park I hated it but now we own all the DVDs. With 5 teenage boys we discovered that watching it as a family has created avenues to talk about religion, sex, drugs, politics and current events. Thanks Trey for toning down the language over the years. Much more funny without as much cussing.

I liked the episode where they portrayed folks from Kansas as bloodthirsty rednecks.

Sadly, the people it is pointed at never get it. Like the extremists on this blog…that scream and rant about how the ‘other side’ only votes straight ticket…yet the ones screaming the loudest to the same.

The concept of the show is so true..the extremists on both sides are much alike–intolerant, incapable of seeing anyone else’s opinion, quick to attack, extoll their own “virtue” and constantly be ready to send out pointed barbs at the smallest imagined provocation.

Glad they cleaned South Park up by cutting back the swearing. I’ve seen it a few times and some of it amusing.

Not a big fan though. I don’t watch that much TV anyway.

I WAS a big fan of South Park. But it has not been funny or interesting the last 7 years of its 10 year run. And centrist? Please! Parker and Stone made the big bucks and sold out everything they belieived in.

Hearing crudely drawn cartoon children curse never did much for me.

My kids thought it was funny . . . when they were 10.

“I WAS a big fan of South Park. But it has not been funny or interesting the last 7 years of its 10 year run. And centrist? Please! Parker and Stone made the big bucks and sold out everything they belieived in.”

Nonsense. Tey and Parker are and have been consistently libertarian, socially liberal and very capitalist (i.e., fiscally conservative). To accuse them of “selling out” is ludicrous. I happen to think that libertarianism is very wrong, but that doesn’t keep Trey and Parker from being very funny even when they are wrong. Overall, even though last season was a little weak, they have been getting better, often combining multiple culture references in one episode

    Centrist is a bad term.

All the poop and fart jokes just got old. The show is little more than Matt and Trey finding some target to make fun of, throwing in some poo, then that’s about it. Wake me up when they come up with something new.

I think ksagnostic got it right, about the show and the whole “centrist” concept. The center is not a fixed position, or positions. It’s common ground, when it can be found. Sometimes it doesn’t exist.

Sometimes the show does seem pointless, and I don’t always agree with their point of view, but the show has always been biting and intelligent, notwithstanding projectile vomit and “poo jokes.”

I think sometimes their twisted satire is just lost on people (especially those who take it–or themselves–too seriously), such as the episode wherein they had the “stop the rainforest” PSA. Well, I happen to be completely in favor of saving the rainforest, but I thought that was hilarious. I laughed my ass off.

The first SP I ever saw was “Kill me, goddamit!” My reaction was “Whoa! This is edgy!” I was a fan from that point on.

There were 3 episodes that killed the show for me.

The “underpants gnomes” episode was hilarious. But the message “big corporations are good” was a sell out.

The episode with the butt faced people was unfunny and crude.

And the Osama episode where one of the kids says something like “We’re all part of the same team. And those who won’t root for that teamshould just get the fuck out.” was the final straw.

Since then, I hear they managed to piss off Isaac Hayes. I con’t imagine the show without “Chef”. Parker and Stone are done.

Rage,” The center is not a fixed position, or positions. It’s common ground, when it can be found. Sometimes it doesn’t exist.”Quite true! Problem is, extremism demands the destruction of common ground; “You’re either with us or against us!” Common ground implies compromise, and extremism can never compromise.

South Park is hilarious, and has been my favorite cable show for years. It is the only show that depicts Americans in a realistic manner, in my opinion. I own all of the DVDs and seldom miss a show, unless I am really busy. Cartman is my favorite character, since he reminds me of greedy, selfish, arrogant, f***ed-up Republicans.

  23. Posted November 7, 2006 at 12:39 pm | Permalink

SouthPark is a commercial endeavour. It exists to make money. Unlike the majority of the entertainment industry, they know that but not limiting their satire to mocking the right-wingers you make a lot more money.

And to anyone who would let their 10-year-old watch SouthPark, I’m sure you got the children you deserve.

I was gonna say, I wouldn’t let my 16 year old watch it till this year, there’s no WAY I’d let a 10 year old watch it. It’s an adult program with adult themes.

Sophmoric? I hated it at first, until I figured out the political messages. It’s hillarious. Even if I don’t agree with the message all the time.

And I agree, I don’t care for the poop fart crap all the time, but Cartman does remind me of a republican!!

South Park is easily the best show on television, period. Timely, biting social commentary and satire at its finest. However, they seem to take aim at anyone who exhibits passion for anything. These people make easy targets, but they’re also the ones putting ideas forth.

The only thing “funny” about South Park is the way it’s pot smoking, loser-ass creators try to pawn themselves off as Libertarians when they’ve clearly become the “extremist” conservatives they once mocked on their sorry show. When was the last time they even took a jab at the right? Hell, why mock the atrocities committed by the Bush regime when there are so many “smug” environmentalists out there just asking to be ridiculed. That’s not even taking into account their hypocritical tirades about celebrity activists. Has there been an episode of South Park in the past 6 years that didn’t serve as a soap box for their “informed” views. Please. Nothing like a couple of derelicts that fell ass-backward into fortune suddenly thinking of themselves as political pundits after the greenbacks start rolling in. “Satire” for the stoned and imbecilic. I impatiently await their deaths…
