Actually, Ed may be right, though, given the butterfly effect, I’m not sure I would want to change history (let alone how!).
The problem is that the persecuted founded a nation and, somewhere along the line, learned how to be persecutors.
No lectures, please, about anti-Semitism, etc; I hate bigotry of all stripes. And I’m well aware that many of Israeli’s enemies don’t have peace and love at the top of their “things to do” list.
In relation to Israel, the real problem (for us, in America) is AIPAC.
Rage – I would go with just requiring Israel to either (a) live within its 1967 borders or (b) if it wants to annex the Territories become a real democracy. The former would require abandoning the Settlements; the latter would require allowing all Palestinians to vote.
It is time for regime change in Tel Aviv. We cannot have this sort of policy:

Ed and I often find ourselves with simialr views. I think I tend to be more willing to accept the fact that we can only turn back the clock so far. Thus, although I believe that what was done in 1948 was wrong it is also too late to undo it. Thus I leave Israel in place. However, I do not accept Israeli empire advocated by voices (above) in their government there.
An observation: going through the Old Testament it seems that whenever Israel strives to empire and covets its neighbors’ lands God smites them down. Persia has been an instrument of that smiting in the past. Persia is rattling sabers again …
hmmm,If you consider the long history of that particular piece of ground (Israel/Palestine), it is probably soaked with more gallons of blood per square foot than any other comparable real estate on earth! Maybe, if it’s occupants can’t somehow find a way to get along peacefully, it’s about time for the world to declare it off limits to everybody, move the present population elsewhere and use the land as a storage facility for nuclear waste.

This has been one heck of a good couple of weeks.
Finally, a politician stands up and says the obvious–Bush didn’t do his job before the 9-11 attack.

And now the Woodward book has this episode that has been confirmed by the record that George Tenet, who was much abused by this administration, went over to the White House for the purpose of calling an emergency meeting and warning as clearly as possible about the extremely dangerous situation with Osama bin Laden, and was brushed off! And I don’t know why—honestly—I mean, I understand how horrible this Congressman Foley situation with the instant messaging is, okay? I understand that. But, why didn’t these kinds of things produce a similar outrage? And you know, I’m even reluctant to talk about it in these terms because it’s so easy for people to hear this or read this as sort of cheap political game-playing. I understand how it could sound that way. (Practically screaming now)But dammit, whatever happened to the concept of accountability for catastrophic failure? This administration has been by far the most incompetent, inept, and with more moral cowardice, and obsequiousness to their wealthy contributors, and obliviousness to the public interest of any administration in modern history, and probably in the entire history of the country!

Mr. Santiago clearly crosses the line drawn by most responsible individuals. It is one thing to be on opposite side of a debate; it is undoubtedly antisocial to allow unhinged hatred to color (!) ones thinking.

History has recorded the horrors of the Holocaust as it relates to the Jews, but Hitler did not reserve the “Final Solution” for just those enthic Jews. There may have been as many as seven million other individuals that were exterminated by the Third Reich.
Hitler had socialists, gypsies, intellectuals, homosexuals, communists and POW’s interred in concentration camps and eventually executed.
The point is that blind hatred can be directed at any group of people. We may feel a bias against any segment of the population, but we have to protect the rights of all.
It might be the homosexuals that are feeling society’s wrath today – tomorrow it may be Catholics.
Or Hispanics.
Or Irish.
Or white males.
Or poor people.
Or Kansasans.
Perhaps we should just ensure the rights of all people, lest our particular group be the next marked for extinction.

That, and Ian STILL lists him email on web-based email service Safemail; nothing wrong with that, but one would think someone so suspicious of the “tribe” would stop using a company based and administered in Israel.

According to Rabbi David Saperstein of the Interfaith Alliance Foundation, Americans “cannot stand idly by while our brothers and sisters, parents and children, live in fear that racism, homophobia, misogyny, and xenophobia continue to go unchecked. We cannot stand idly by while hate crimes destroy the sense of community that we and so many others have worked so hard to build.”
According to Saperstein, hate crimes are not restricted to violence. Hate crimes “are more than murders, beatings, and assaults. Hate crimes are nothing less than attacks on those values that are the pillars of our republic and the guarantors of our freedom. They are a betrayal of the promise of America. They erode our national well being. Those who commit these crimes do so fully intending to tear at the too-often frayed threads of diversity that bind us together and make us strong. They seek to divide and conquer. They seek to tear us apart from within, pitting American against American, fomenting violence and civil discord.”
If we buy into this line of reasoning, the First Amendment of the Constitution not only allows but encourages hatred and violence. It may soon become a punishable offense to be a racist, homophobe, misogynist, and xenophobe. As distasteful as these people and their ideas may be, the Bill of Rights protects them, provided they do not engage in violence against other people.
Simply criticizing Israel is now considered anti-Semitic. According to the ADL, the scholarly article criticizing AIPAC, authored by John J. Mearsheimer of the University of Chicago and Stephen M. Walt of the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard, is “a classical conspiratorial anti-Semitic analysis invoking the canards of Jewish power and Jewish control” and “anti-Israel forces will be citing this study for a long time to come.”

Anyone remember THAT sordid little episode? Well it turns out that SOMEONE thought she was onto something….
A discussion of recent threats to judges’ safety, at a bar association conference in suburban Dallas last week, became startlingly specific when Sandra Day O’Connor, the retired Supreme Court justice, recounted that each justice had received in the mail “a wonderful package of home-baked cookies” that contained “enough poison to kill the entire membership of the court.”
Justice O’Connor’s remarks were reported on Thursday in The Star-Telegram in Fort Worth.
Although the episode was not publicly disclosed when it occurred in April 2005, it had a public, although little-noticed, denouement last month when the sender of the poisoned cookies was sentenced in federal court here to 15 years in prison.
…recipients included the nine justices; the chiefs of staff of the Army, Navy, and Air Force; and the director and deputy director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The packages, containing either candy or baked goods, were laced with rat poison.
Of course, the sender either was only proving a point, and didn’t want ot poison anyone, or was incredibly stupid. The yummies were sent with notes saying “THIS IS POISONED” or “WE WILL KILL YOU”. Charming.
i CERTIANLY believe the similiarity between this gesture, and Ann Coulters joke is worth looking at… Her joke was innappropriate when she made it, and is innapropriate after its been acted on. But then… I can think of very few things that make it out of Ann Coulters mouth that ARE ever appropriate. Perhaps she’ll moniter her jokes a little more closely after the FBI shows up to question her about whether the poisoner wannabe sent her any fan mail, or has any connection.

Barbara March, 59, was charged with one count of mailing a threatening letter. A spokesman for the U.S. Attorney’s office in Washington said Thursday the charge could change with a federal grand jury investigation.
Laboratory results determined that seven of the letters mailed to Supreme Court justices were laced with rat poison, the FBI said in an affidavit. The contents of two other letters sent to justices and two letters sent to Mueller and Deputy Director John S. Pistole are being analyzed by the FBI.
March, also known as Barbara McMahon and Bonnie McMahon, is being detained without bond at the York Correctional Institution in Niantic. A probable cause hearing has been set for July 11, but it will be canceled if an indictment is returned in Washington.
In 1985, March entered a no-contest plea and was found guilty of two counts of attempted murder and one count of carrying a pistol without a permit. She was charged with shooting at her brother, Richard March, and his wife.
Diane March was shot in the chest, and survived.
Richard March contacted U.S. postal inspectors several days later and turned over a bottle of wine mailed to his 65-year-old mother. Tests by the State Toxicology Laboratory determined it was laced with Benadryl, which, mixed with alcohol, could be lethal.
Investigators at the time found rat poison among March’s belongings.
March has been in state custody, the longest from Dec. 9, 1985, to June 29, 1989, except for two months during that time, said a spokesman for the state Department of Correction. She was incarcerated in 1992 for about a month and again in 1994 for a month.

Second, it should also be noted the sender sent these things to the heads of the armed services, the head of the FBI, and others, which Ann Coulter never suggested, and which is not even remotely a logical extrapolation from the Ann Coulter comment.
Third, the sender wasn’t actually going after these people. She put fake return addresses on the things and then included the letters that said they were poison, because she was trying to get the people whose return addresses she put on the packages in trouble.
Fourth, this is a free country. Much as it is entirely legal for people to openly call for a violent revolution to overthrow the government, or for soldiers to frag their officers, it is legal to call for the poisoning of public officials. That’s free speech, as established by the very same liberal Justices Ann Coulter hates so much.

And really, how many times have you heard someone say “I want to kill myself” or “I’m going to die?” They don’t really have suicidal tendencies, it’s just a saying. This country has freedom of speech enshrined as one of its highest laws, and everyone needs to respect it. Even if there are some people we really wish had duct tape over their mouths.
Also, the woman is clearly mentally deranged, not a terrorist. If you really want to strike terror into the heart of the population, poisoning the leaders of the country would be a good way to go. But REAL terrorists DON’T PUT WARNING NOTES in their packages of poison. That’s called defeating your own purpose or shooting yourself in the foot. This woman is clearly not a terrorist (there is no cause of terror, except possibly for her acquaintances) and simply needs some time in a secure location where all her mail is checked and some good medications/therapy.

For one thing, I don’t know that my position (which parallels that of Yitzak Rabin) is far from that of most Jews and maybe even most Israelis (other then the Settlers). I have a proposal that I believe would improve Israeli security.

Ben and RM – I fully support the existence of a Palestinian state – to me, that is the ONLY solution to the violence in the middle East. What is fair for the Jews should also be fair for the Palestinians.
I do not have much faith in governments to solve the world’s problems, but it seems that PEOPLE have the answers. Most Palestinians and Israelis want to live in peace.
God, can we all stop a minute and just consider peace in the Middle East…….

Gather ’round, boys and girls, let me tell you a story about bullies. Santiago is a racist bully, but like most, he is all BS and no back up.
When I was a young man, about 100 years ago, I lived in Detroit. I was raking the leaves in my parent’s front yard when the neighborhood bully rode up on his bicycle. His name was Jim Pence and he was about fifteen. I was just thirteen years old. Jim terrified our neighborhood.
Pence rode up on his bike and challenged me to fight. Not knowing any better, I tossed my rake aside and prepared myself to fight. Jim Pence looked at me like I was crazy and rode off on his bicycle. He never bothered me again.
Jim Pence turned out to be just a bully with no (backbone.) After I faced him down, none of the kids in the neighborhood took him seriously again. No one was afraid of him anymore. All the kids in the neighborhood just laughed at him when he mouthed off.
The last I heard, Jim Pence was pumping gas at a station on the corner of Woodward and Twelve Mile Road.
I have done alright for myself.
