The 79 percent of the votes Rep. Jerry Moran, R-Hays, won last week in Kansas’ “Big First” made him the House Republican with the third-highest percentage win in the nation. Moran lagged only Louisiana Republican Reps. Bobby Jindal (88 percent) and Richard Baker (83 percent) — though 35 Democrats hit or exceeded Moran’s mark. Of course, Moran had an off night historically: He won with 91 percent in 2004 and 2002. Two likely explanations for Moran’s standout popularity with voters: He holds town hall meetings in each of his 69 counties every year. And “you almost never hear me come home defending what’s going on in Washington,” Moran told the Topeka Capital-Journal.

Jerry Moran is the quintessential conservative, and he has repeatedly demonstrated the model that wins: he votes conservatively, he supports conservative values and principles, he stays in constant touch with his constituents, he staunchly opposes (and will vote against) liberal initiatives. And, he steers clear of scandal.
The rest of the GOP would serve themselves well to learn this model – and use it.
Geez 79%?
I thought the place I live in this beknighted backward state was bad! Hell I’m glad I don’t live in this clowns district.
I wonder what a party looks like in Hickland? A rabbit, two tumbleweeds, Earl, the Bubba extended family, and a prairie dog?
Heck the only thng to talk to out there must be the stone fence posts!
Damn, all this time I thought it was rep. Hays,(R)Moran.Slysdexia, I guess.
Moran seems to be a more moderate Republican who apparrently serves his district well, town meetings and keeping away from the scandals that have beset republicans is a sign of someone who really wants to do whats best for his district
I suspect he would vote for an iniitative to raise the minimum wage, clamp down on employers who hire illegals ….
… and I’m an independent
One thing I know Rep. Moran has fought for is better Medicare reimbursement to medical care providers in his district. Obviously, it is in his constituents’ and therefore his interest to keep medical care available in the First District; I don’t recall right now if he fought for higher reimbursement rates or quicker reimbursements. I think he may be more of a moderate, in some respects, than a “conservative” but, in general, he is considered conservative.
This was exactly why I kept speaking out against him, his record is staunchly staunchly pro-Bush, pro- conservative. He also lives in the most conservative part of the state.
John Doll who ran against him, didn’t get much of a message out. He wasn’t expected to win against Moran, therefore wasn’t given as much money. I live in their district, and other than me seeking him out personally, I wouldn’t have ever even known about him. (except for the piece that this blog did about him being supported by a newspaper).
Doll’s big thing was going to be Ethanol, and once that was out, all the sudden you couldn’t hear enough about Moran pushing for Ethanol too. Interesting huh that all these years he could have been pushing that harder, suddenly an election comes up that someone is going to do something about it, and he can’t get on board fast enough.
hmph.
Uh, no Ken, he has voted with republicans over 90% of the time. He only speaks out against republicans when it’s already something most of Americans don’t like.

He voted 100% against reforming Government.
He voted against gun show background checks.
For limiting medical malpractice settlements, against the prescription drug bill, against gaming, for almost everything pro-government, anti-stem cell research, pro-religion/government.
go to the link to find your own issues then click on interest groups ratings to find what he supports and disagrees with. The man is a hack for the repubs and corporations. He is no moderate.
He’s a slick hack though, photographs well, wears good suits. Knows the Walter Cronkite saying about sincerity, once you learn how to fake it you have it made.
My family lives in the district and they like him fine. I’ve met him and saw the slickness. He has that job a long as he wants it. Strangely enough though, I think that job is about his level of competence. Although when/if Pat Roberts leaves the Senate (that’ll be the day he dies), Moran will be first in line.
Which will continue the line of succession unbroken; for as long as I can recall, the First District Congressman succeeds the retiring Senator, who was the First District Congressman, ad infinitum.
Those who have visited him in Washington have said he’s totally opposite of how he acts ‘at home’…that he’s cold, indifferent, and uninterested.
Well, it’s easy to beat a straw-man opponent. Democrat John Doll had never run for office, never held office, had no name recognition, and I’m suspecting no support from the national or state party. Doll is a nice, well meaning man, but Moran’s victory has more to do with the lack of a decent opponent than anything else.
I’m surprised at both The Eagle and the Capital-Journal for jumping on such a shallow story. If Moran had lost… now that would have been news.
As Paul F Rossell said; give him enough money and lie a bit and he wins.
And I am going to work extra hard to see that moran never serves another term as my congresscritter!
