Landslide victory about Morrison’s credentials, Kline’s bad judgment

Polls had indicated that Democrat Paul Morrison likely would defeat incumbent Republican Attorney General Phill Kline. But not that Morrison would crush Kline.
Morrison’s landslide victory likely reflects both his sterling credentials and voter concerns about Kline’s misplaced priorities and poor judgment. Now Morrison must show that voter confidence was well-placed as he restores public trust in the attorney general’s office.

Kansas is turning around in the right direction.

Morrison will be a great AG and Kline can go be crooked somewhere else.

Maybe in jail for giving O’riley those records

    Well HI THERE PHIL!

Pretty prompt with the post election threads! First time ever we get a Tuesday night thread.

    Um….

Where have you BEEN? I have been asking for a Tiahrt thread for a month. You endorsed the guy and never demanded he debate his challenger Garth McGinn.

NOW Todd Tiahrt is the minority representative in congress for the 4th Kansas district.

I place the blame on you.

Both of these men need to spend a little time in the Big House to contemplate about their behavior.

Sure I thought of that lucee. That’s why I know you just championed a Johnson country republican that couldn’t get on the ballot without switching.Morrison won’t change his beliefs for anyone or any reason. As for those in the tank for Tiller, he’s not off the hook, but unfortunately I am not at liberty to elaborate.Morrison is a good man, and it is our loss that he decided to move on up, but helping to spread the Johnson County influence is an admirable goal for Wichita. Good job to all.

    Sorry, Nick, you’re nuts.

Morrison will be an excellent A.G. He had strong support in Wichita and I think this was what got him the job.

Morrison had a very efficient campaign staff. They helped kick Kline’s ass and we should thank them for that.

I can not say I was shocked tonight at my wife, more pleasantly surprised at her vote. Some might recall I mentioned in 2004 she voted for Bush to my surprise as by the time of the election I was aware that he had lied us into the invasion and assumed she was aware too. It was only when I said that Bush had invaded Iraq for no reason. That she said,” there was a reason, remember 9-11?”, she fell silent when I pointed out that was Bin Laden and he was in Afghanistan. That Iraq had nothing to do with the attack. Finally she said, “oh!”. When asked where she had gotten the idea it was Saddam, she said that the President had said it. I figured out that she was only going on what she had been told at church ( Yeah I married a Fundie!).

So tonight I thought she had canceled my vote for Morrison with a vote for Kline. I was surprised when she said she voted for Morrison because Kline was amoral! She did not like how he acted and what he was doing. God I guess my daily ranting pays off sometimes.

Hey Annie,The election is over, you can tone down on that untruth, okay? Morrison said he never took any money from Tiller. From what can be known today, there is no evidence to the contrary. I don’t usually spend money on elections, but this year I sent Morrison $300. There were a lot of poor people like me supporting Morrison. If there enough of us, we can a difference.

The name’s Nick, Steven. It isn’t a matter of being able to compete in the primary or not. It was a matter of being able to get the party endorsment, and the funding that comes with it. There was simply no other realistic way he could have unseated the incumbent running on the same ticket. It was a practical matter, nothing else.

Ben,Make no mistake. Mr Morrison is not middle of the road. He is a conservative without the religious bent. Of course, if your definition of “middle of the road” is based on who’s currently in office, that comparison is valid.

Annie,You can’t blame Morrison for SB323. They, and he, were sold a bill of goods written almost entirely by a bunch of racketeering breaucrats that have infected the KDOC. It was sold as a solution to over crowding, when their real motive was to free up Max Custody bedspace to allow for more Medium and Minimum beds which they could use for their slave labor rental program. (Yes, the KDOC is completely corrupt at the highest levels)The best any appointed or elected committee can ever hope for, is breaucratic administrations that are honest, and true to their purpose.Rest assured Mr Morrison learned his lesson a long time before the KDOC was dropping, “Clerical Error” as the reason for the releases and reduced sentences caused by SB323.As for bringing charges against Morrison for dropping the case against Tiller. That’s just silly to even speculate about something he has not even done. No matter what he said given the information he had, Mr Morrison would never drop the case should there be evidence of a series of crimes.

I have possibly misplaced faith that Mr. Morrison will pursue any documented violations of the law at Tiller’s House of Delights.

I can’t understand the liberal mindset. You would protect those who commit child rape and incest if the alternative meant siding with Kline. Or maybe that was an attitude that will vanish now that the election is over. I can only hope.

    hmmm… & outlander,

I have wondered if Kline’s means of obtaining the abortion records did not violate Hipaa, which if it did, would open any prosecutions that could result to appeal in Federal court.

    http://www.hhs.gov/ocr/hipaa/

I don’t think that Morrison is wanting to protect abortion doctors or child rapists, but in law you have to follow the rules on prosecution, etc. Kline never seemed as concerned about that as his ideological agenda and getting face time on TV.

Morrison’s position on the case is that he would evaluate what has gone on with the case and decide what to do. I don’t see that he has much alternative but to do that. He asked Kline to not proceed further.

Steven: As someone who has occasion to deal with the confusing HIPAA rules and regs, my understanding is consistent with Mr. Tolle’s. It would seem to add another layer of separation that identifying information has reportedly been redacted.

I have no doubt that Mr. Morrison will pursue enforcement of the law once he has knowledge of a violation. I do wonder about the direction his investigative focus will take as his time in office actually begins.

  46. Steven Davis
    Posted November 8, 2006 at 7:23 pm | Permalink

I don’t know as much about HIPAA as I should, just familiar with the “thou shalts and shalt nots” that effect me.

Surely Kline must have had some probable cause if the supreme court allowed him to go forward. There is a lot we don’t know about the case that unfortunately encourages specualtions of wrong doing from both sides of the debate.

In this LJWorld article, a commenter is sure Morrison is repaying Tiller by asking Kline to not proceed further on the investigation. It would be useful to know the details here so as to avoid the speculation, but I am fairly sure that is not possible.

No problem on the name Steve. As far as Morrison being in the tank for Tiller. Personally I don’t believe we’re going to find contributions from Tiller’s money laundering network, but he is most definately regreting his words. I can only speculate that he along with many bought into the attack on womens rights spin and probably never seriously considered the implications of his words, should there be evidence of major crimes going on. I seriously doubt Kline would have enlightened him before the election. In any event he has clearly backed off his previous statement since Kline was given the records. If Morrison is doing anyone a favor, there is a whole list of people and several corporate interests that stand to lose their asses if indeed Kline has evidence of serious crimes. Many of which were of great help to Mr Morrison.Personally, if it were possible, I think the best thing that could happen would be for the entire case be forwarded to the Justice Department and the FBI. Seeing that Tillers partner and many of the victims were from out of state, this might be a way to wash his hands of it. At this point, I’d think both he and Kline would jump at this option, but I have no clue if it would be considered.

One way or another, I’ve got to believe that Mr Morrison would just soon chew off his right arm, rather than be the one to close the case, after the supreme court’s ruling. If he did, it would be a case that would shadow him for the rest of his days. A very bad career move.

Tell Morrisson to be sure, before he moves in, to have the cleaning crew sterilize the underside of Kline’s desk. Phill spent his entire term dreaming about getting to read about the sex lives of teenage girls. It’s got to be pretty disgusting under there by now.
