Goyle will be great addition in Topeka

The biggest local race this election, both in money spent and political party attention, was for Kansas House District 87. I’m glad that Democrat Raj Goyle prevailed against incumbent Republican Bonnie Huy, who ran a hard-fought campaign. Goyle is just the type of smart, young professional we need more of in Topeka.

I would love to think this was a good thing, but I worry about a candidate with a Yale/Harvard education that didn’t know he shouldn’t be shaking hands and introducing himself to voters INSIDE a polling place. This happened at Maranantha while I was voting and also at another polling place as reported by the Eagle. What else has he done that wasn’t kosher? I still wonder why this seat was worth the over $100,000 it cost him.

Indeed. But I think the coming showdown over the ‘Unitary Executive’ is something that, frankly, none of us are going to want to see.

It’s never, ever, ever pretty to watch somebody have to confront their own denial. So much the worse when the arena in which the plays out is the U.S. Constitution.

Once Bush/Cheney/Rove is safely out of office, some urgent repairs are going to be necessary to shore up the separation of powers and to restore the Constitution to the balance intended by the Framers. I know GMC70 disagrees with me on this point, and I think, frankly, that he’s just wrong. How wrong, precisely, will depend on the lengths to which Bush will go during the next two years. Today’s press conference is some ‘must-see TV’ for every American. Will Bush blink?

Cheney’s declaration that the VP does not have to respond to Congressional subpeonas isn’t a terribly encouraging place to begin.

What did Goyle prove?1.)Goyle lied in a brochure that said Bonnie voted for a “pig barn” instead of voting for kids. The truth?Bonnie Huy spoke AGAINST the Fire Marshal’s demand that a new state fair “pig barn” be built. The Fire Marshal declared the old barn unsafe. Bonnie Huy was home, sick, on the day the actual vote was cast, but Goyle lied and said Bonnie voted for the “Pig Barn” which was ordered by the Fire Marshal.(How much “education” takes place at the State Fair? How many school expenditures are LESS important than this pig barn, which is, in fact an educational tool? Again, Bonnie spoke against this expense.)2.) Goyle gave Huy a hard time over the immigration issue, pointing to another obscure vote that Bonnie missed. (Bonnie’s attendence is actually very good, but Goyle again brings up a day that Bonnie was not in Topeka.)Goyle has written a paper against deportation of illegals, and Goyle’s ACLU has opposed nearly every attempt to hault the flow of illegal immmigration.3.) Goyle the lawyer broke the law, campaigning inside precinct voting locations. No, I didnt see this myself, but I trust those who tell me that Goyle did violate the law, more than once.4.) Bonnie Huy voted in favor of restrictions on marriage, Bonnie simply insisted that marriage restrictions contain parental and judicial waivers. Why should it be easier for minors to get an abortion than it is for minors to get married? Marriage might provide health insurance and support to the child. Support that would otherwise be on the backs of taxpayers. Every Democrat and every Republican in Kansas was OK with our permissive Kansas marriage law until this vote. Bonnie didn’t “allow” young minors to get married, Bonnie Huy voted for a law that RESTRICTED juvenile marriage.Goyle’s ACLU backs NAMBLA, the North American Man Boy Love Association, frequently, in court. NAMBLA wants to rid the country of statutory rape laws. Why is it ok, in the eyes of NAMBLA and Goyle’s ACLU, to have sex with a minor, but it is not OK for minors to marry?—-Goyle proves that it is possible to buy an election.Goyle also makes a joke of campaign finance reform or campaign finance reporting. Most of Goyle’s massive campaign war chest came from out of state.According to one source, Goyle was getting help directly from Podesta and other Dem power brokers. Perfectly legal, of course, but nobody expects this kind of massive expense in a local state-rep race. This was not about the 87th District. It was about Goyle. Whatever the national Dems have planned for Goyle, this will be his easiest race. The element of surprise is gone.—–

Congratulations, you have proven that money does buy votes, that massive, record setting expenditures, paying for roughly 17 mailers, and massive TV and radio spots, filled with lies and distortions, can win!——This was NOT an ideoligal race, since Goyle hid his ideology.

Sebelius ran like a Republican, falsely credit for low taxes, the Bush economy and praising the National Guard, and Sebelius couldnt find a qualified Democrat running mate,.so she picked a Republican running mate.Morrison used to be a Republican.Goyle ran like an illegal immigrant basher, but his organization, the ACLU, fights against immigration reform, and Goyle wrote a research paper opposed to deportation of illegal immigrants.—–You want me to buy everyone on this blog a drink, a victory cigar and want me to wear a Democrat t-shirt of your choice all night, 2 years from now?Run an ACLU liberal who proudly and honestly states his views, in his brochures and you can sleep well knowing the world agrees with YOU!As it is, you have proven yourselves better at deception and lying. How sweet is that “victory”??Until then, you NOW have the chance to rack up a radical voting record that we can use against YOU!—-PSYour national Democrat Party has become more conservative. The newcommers are more conservative than the Democrat House leadership, in Washington.

How is that “Senator Lamont” doing?

I believe I made one solid prediction here, never hedging:

I told you Lieberman would win!

Yes, I am a conservative, but the National and State Democrat parties are more conservative than the liberals on this Blog.

Bush campaigned for rapture-right darling Jim Ryun last Sunday. Ryun is gone.

Bush stumped for hard-right Chris Chocola in Catholic South Bend, Indiana (Notre Dame College), and Chocola is history.

Wing-nut Hostettler of Indiana? Crashed and burned.

Ohio? Brown cruises past incumbent DeWine.

Bush campaign chair Blackwell for Ohio Gov? Smacked down.

Montana–home of cowboys and the NRA types? A Dem leads a Puke going into the recount.

Virginia–VIRGINIA! the cradle of the Confederacy, ditto.

Senate Race in Mizzu–Repub out, Dem IN

Anti-abortion activist Phill Kline was CRYING like a little girl last night on television — the realization that he and his nephew (with the DUI) have to get real jobs had set in apparently.

South Dakota’s referendum to ban abortions, defeated.

The will of the majority has spoken. And it said, “na, na, na, NA . . . na, na, na, NA . . . hey, hey . . . goodbye”

When we cant be sure who will misrepresent us, or “troll” us, when we cant be sure who posted what, then what good is this dialogue?I have been out of town frequently the last several weeks. I did not catch this false, “troll” post until today. This is NOT me, but a coward on this Blog who wants to make me look bad, this post appeared under the Nov 2, I believe, thread on aging:—–”This and other reasons is why national health care is a very bad idea. The more people that live to old age the greater burden on the system.

What we need is to eliminate social security and medicare. Let the market decide who lives and who dies.If you can work you should no matter how old you are. It is better you die being productive than rocking in a chair. If you are too sick to work then you are a burden on society. If you do not have family to care for you then you have no business sticking around. It sounds cold but we are a survival of the fittest society and it works.

My hope is that, under Democratic leadership, America can be made to work for all Americans, and to reclaim its moral leadership in the world. Reasonable people can disagree as to how this can best be accomplished, while still recognizing one another as reasonable people. What we’ve seen for the last six years, at least, has been an attempt to deny this, and to drive people apart by poisoning the atmosphere and sowing discord. I think this has seen its day.

Which is not to say that it’s Morning in America, any more than one would want to Let A Thousand Flowers Bloom–which I actually did say upthread.

In the spirit of a new bi-partisanship, let me be the first to say “bullsh*t.”

    Howard Dean won this.

His “50 state” strategy took the fight to the belly of the beast and gave voters some real alternatives for once.

Voters had a chance to vote on the abortion issue in SD, and they voted to keep abortion legal.

Granted, we’re not going to ram through a bunch of ideological nonsense like the rapture-right did, but don’t expect Democrats and the people who voted for them to be happy with Republican-lite.

    Heckler,

However, if this is how the White House wants to play the next couple of years, I’m prepared to help break them up into little fucking pieces, burn their house down, and salt the earth. Here’s Grover Norquist:

“White House allies suggest there is little reason to think Bush and the Democrats will work together. Bush has tied himself closely to conservative movement leaders who bitterly disagree with Democrats for their opposition to tax cuts and to privatizing Social Security — two of the administration’s top goals.”When we want to go up and they want to go down, we want to go right and they want to go left, there’s no compromise,” said anti-tax activist Grover Norquist, a close advisor to the White House.

Norquist said the Republicans’ primary goal for the next two years should be making the case for GOP control — not bipartisanship.

“Nancy Pelosi will do for the Republicans what [Bill] Clinton did for the Republicans — become the lightning rod to explain that their congressman who they thought was a reasonable guy was really a left-wing wacko,” he said.”

    **********************************

If this is the game, beware. Be very fuckin’-ware. Because the Democratic Party now has the investigatorial tools to show the world how dishonest, corrupt, and, to use my favoritest word, fascistic this Administration and its allies are. And if they try to play their little games with the media, John Dingell, John Conyers, Henry Waxman, Jane Harman, and the rest of the House truth squad will haul their asses into hearings and put the screws to them.

And if they’re going to claim the House subpeona power doesn’t apply to members of the Administration, get ready for the Constitutional showdown they supposedly want.

Everyone who voted Republican has a choice to make in how far to go in supporting the course of action Norquist is suggesting. Because if the White House goes on doing as it has done, the Democratic House will have NO CHOICE but to push back. Party activists like myself will see to that.

If Republican voters truly want to see bipartisanship, they need to put the screws to their party leadership. It only works if both sides play. And if Bush goes on a Unitary Executive rampage, I fail to see how the voters in ‘08 will hold that against Democrats.

    hmmmmm

Jan Kennedy, former Sedgwick County Treasurer, and a DEMOCRAT, was a close friend of mine at the time of her death, but that was not always the case.

I tried to help Jerry McCoy, former Republican Sedgwick County Treasurer, defeat Kennedy, but McCoy had “sexual harassment” problems and lost to Kennedy. (Primarily because the Wichita Eagle would not shut up about McCoys sexual harassment settlement.) Kennedy, of course, also benefited from name recognition, and Republican cross-over votes. Jan’s husband, at the time, was Judge David Kennedy, a Republican. Jan Kennedy also attended St. James Episcopal, a College Hill church attended by some very strong Republican contributors and leaders. (One of them being the late Tom Tatlock, an oil man, JR, but an oil man that gave to many charities, and who supported Jan Kennedy. Tom Tatlock told me that Jan was a good person and to give her a chance. Tom Tatlock died recently, he was a great man.)

So, on Tatlocks advice, I did give Jan Kennedy a chance.—-To make a long story short, when Democrat Jan Kennedy was falsely accused of misdeeds in the County Courthouse, I spoke firmly in her defense. For the record, Jan Kennedy told the County Manager, the County Counselor, and all of the Sedgwick County Commissioners, in open session, and at other times, that she intended to hire a consultant.

This consultant WROTE the Kansas License Tag and Registration program, a state program.Kennedy was never warned by anyone in power that she was doing anything wrong. The County Counselor told her she had the authority. At least one County Commissioner got mad at Kennedy for “wasting our time on an internal matter.”Kennedy was before her time. CapnThere is NO way that anyone can get any “special deal” on their property valuations and get away with it.

The Appraiser is appointed by the County Commissioners and must be approved by Topeka. The mill levy is set by the various taxing authorities. The valuation is set by the Appraiser. Why would a moderate to liberal appraiser’s office do anything to help a conservative legislator?Sorry, I wouldnt buy it if you told me a Democrat was getting a “deal.”Too many people involved to pull off a “conspiracy” of that size.

That’s OK, you don’t have to admit that I was right, I know.

Under the current climate of overblown scandals and the war not going well coupled with the “six year itch” you should have taken 50-60 house seats and ten senate seats. Many of the Dems that won ran as conservatives and moderates.Pelosi and Reid went into hiding for 2 weeks knowing that keeping a high profile would hurt the cause.

The fact remains that Liberal/Progressives cant win on a nationwide basis when they stand up and portray themselves honestly. If you cannot accept this you are in for more disappointment in the future.

Valid points Paul. It is looking like the Dems also have the Senate. So, Bush will definitely be reined in.

As for how the ‘freshmen’ do that will depend a LOT on who tops the two tickets. WAY too early to predict that.

    Heckler,

‘Conservative victory’ for the Democrats, my ass. By that logic, Bush’s 2000 election ‘victory’ was actually a ‘victory’ for liberals, since Bush ran as a ‘compassionate’ conservative, which is to say, as a liberal rather than as a conservative.

Both arguments are equally nonsensical. Voters want the country to head in a new direction on multiple fronts. Democrats won, and Democrats get to decide who we are and where we’re taking the country. Not you.

  77. CF
    Posted November 8, 2006 at 2:48 pm | Permalink

And to follow up my own post, the most ‘conservative’ Democrat running for office, Harold Ford Jr., went down to defeat in Tennessee.

So, Heckler, conservatism isn’t the default for American voters. They know what they want from their government–namely, tough, smart, competent liberal government–and they know to vote Democratic to get it.

Last night’s election was the American electorate’s repudiation of the Conservative movement. Period.

CF: America is moving toward the middle. It’s obvious, and not all bad. The “two” parties are losing their clout….slowly, I admit, but surely. Maybe it’s not all bad. Guess we’ll have to wait and see. If the Dems are smart, though, they’ll not elect Pelosi as Speaker of the House. Any conservative support they mustered will go down the drain in a heartbeat. that bitch is scary !!

The most conservative Dem running was Webb. Look at his background. Except for his stance against the war in Iraq he could run well in any Red state.

It may be a week or two before that race is decided.

If what America wants is Liberals why did Pelosi and Reid hide for 2 weeks?
