Can ‘America’s mayor’ become America’s president?

Rudolph Giuliani could have been elected president in November 2001, back in the post-Sept. 11 days when he was dubbed “America’s mayor,” but what about November 2008? Polls still say he’s much admired, but now that he has set up an exploratory committee, his ability to secure the Republican nomination seems uncertain. His socially liberal views, complicated marital history and big city roots all have the potential to put off red-state voters and, more immediately, big money Republicans.

When you consider the buffoon currently in the White House, a potted plant starts looking qualified! At least it serves a purpose.

Gster has got it right. As I say on another thread, Bush is so good at lowering expectations that we welcome the entrance of crook and liar, James A. Baker, III to help fix the Iraq mess.

I am hoping that crook and liar Baker can offer some useful recommendations. I know he will try, because a lot of his money is at state. Baker, the attorney for the Saudi Royal Family.

Rudolph Giuliani is Israel’s number one pick for US President.

Does that tell you anything or everything.

I don’t know much about this guy beyond 9/11, but I was impressed with how he handled himself and the situation then.

He seemed fully in charge, and didn’t have the “deer in the headlights” behavior exhibited by our Fearful Leader.

The G-Man is a one trick pony — to think any mayor caught in the horror of 9/11 could not have performed as he did is naive.

Can’t say the same for Pres. Bush — any number of potential presidents republican or democrat would have / could have done better — same holds true for the Katrina disaster and aftermath ….

I don’t think that Rudy could win the Republican nomination.

Looking for an alternative to John McCain (please!), Mitt Romney is a name starting to come up. He has the impressive education and experience, speaks very well, and has shown he can win in a blue state.

Republicans need a fresh face on the national stage.

    Rudy Giuliani? President? ROFLMAO!

    From Talking Points Memo:

Perhaps this is something of an existential question. But do we really have to pretend that Rudy Giuliani has more than a snowball’s chance in hell of getting the Republican presidential nomination? Or can we all just stipulate that a multiple adulterer, who supports gay civil rights and choice, has deep and on-going ties to mobbed-up and now-disgraced Police boss Bernie Kerik, has a largely unscrutinized (outside of New York) resume, and had the bright idea of locating the NYC disaster center in the already-once-bombed World Trade Center probably will have some rough sledding in Republican primaries?

I think Rudy could make it. I think that the GOP needs to take a good look in the mirror about who they want their prime backers to be. Pandering to Falwell and Robertson got them nowhere….need we mention the disappearance of Ralph Reed who proved to be much more greedy than he was Christian.Rudy represents 50% of American couples – he’s been divorced. There is no way that George W. Bush could have been in the heart of 911 and orchestrated it like Guiliani did. He has my everlasting respect for the balls he showed during that nightmare. He was more than America’s Mayor to me – he stood for everything we want from a leader. He was in the grit, level-headed, transparent, decent, and concerned for the safety of the citizens.Bush would have disapeared and Rove would have spun it.I am encouraged by his wanting to run. I have never voted repub. but if it comes down to Hillary vs. Rudy – I may have to go with Rudy – as I know him today. The SOB better not visit Falwells College or Bob Jones U.

If nothing else, Rudy Juliani has incredible name recognition. In today’s world, that is often enough, regardless of anything else.

Will be interesting, but if they are starting already, will be a horribly long election process.

I’m here to tell ya that Sam (the Sham) Brownback is gonna be a factor in 2008. His polling today runs in the single digits, even among evangelical conservatives, but with the demise of Allen and the hate the twice-born have for McCain and Rudy, combined with a Iowa’s farmers and Holy Rollers (who voted for Pat Robertson in ‘86), (yer doin’ a heckuva job) Brownie is poised to be the GOP’s Darkhorseman of the Apocolypse.

Brownback is crazy as a hoot owl but when did that ever stop the faction of the GOP coalition heaven-bent on enacting a King James Version of the Constitution of the United States?

Yogi Berra once said, “Predictions are tough, especially when they involve the future,” but mark my words: it won’t just be Red vs. Blue in 2008, there’s gonna be some Brown.

The question is much the same as the Dems faced. Do the Republicans want to be “ideologically pure,” or do they want to win?

This election, Dems decided they wanted to win first, and worry about ideological direction later.

I suspect that Republicans will do the same. That is the name of the game, of course. Winning elections.

That said, I think Giuliani has a serious shot at the nomination. I don’t think most Americans care whether he was divorced or not. His positions on some issues concern me (i.e. 2nd amendment) but I don’t know that those issues are controlling. We’ll see.

I live in Medicine Hat AB Canada. I watched with undescrible emotions, along with the rest of the world, the horrors of 9-11. Mr. Juliani dealt with the tragedy with strength and leader ship. He showed his humanity as well as a steely determination druing a time when all of those around him were understandably falling apart. While he was sharing a day to day update on the TV I was developed a deep respect for him. I felt then he should run for president. Good luck and God bless you Mr. Juliani.Sincerly,Denyse, from Medicine Hat, Alberta,Canada
