The recent effort by city officials to crack down on Old Cowtown Museum’s animal code violations is — let’s agree — bizarre. I mean, owning a swaybacked horse is a crime? And smoke alarms are required in chicken coops?
What next? Air conditioning? Cable?
It got stranger when Rooster Cogburn flew the coop and reportedly started hiding at an undisclosed location. The mystery is as yet unsolved.
Any leads out there?
In my column Friday, I took a satirical look at how Sgt. Joe Friday of “Dragnet” fame might enforce Wichita’s animal code and solve the case.

My parents had a pygmy goat for almost ten years, licensed, registered and tagged from the city. One day they were notify that there was a court date set, they were charged with having a Billy goat within the city limits. On the day of court my mother went and once before the judge, neither the city inspector nor the animal control officer could swear that the goat was a male. THEY HAD NEVER LOOKED!
The judge scolded both for wasting the court’s valuable time and suggesting that both should think about what they are doing before doing it, or get into a different line of work!(foot note: the following day they found the goat dead in the back yard, damn Al-Qaeda!)
This all reads like some cock and bull story.
For the sake of accuracy, I think it is only a “cock story”.
I think all the fuss about a rooster at cowtown is a load of horse puckey. Animals were part of the normal way of life during the era portrayed at cowtown.
Frankly, I’m surprised PeTA hasn’t started protesting and firebombing the place, since they’re probably beind this stupidity.
Sounds to me like the first step in getting Cowtown closed so the land can be sold to a favored developer.
That is why I propose we keep the sales tax at 7.3% to fund all the cultural attractions in Sedgwick County. With the Zoo, Cowtown, Exploration Place and others off of the county and city’s budget the extra money can be used on other things.
The money would be distributed evenly by a panel of representitives of each attraction. For example the zoo would have 2, Cowtown would have 2 , and the Kansas Aviation Museum would have 2 and so on.
It is time Wichita cares about its attractions or it is going to become a glorified Dodge City.
