Strange, I seem to remember something about water-boarding being against the law. In fact we tried and convicted some Japanese after WWII for that very thing. But hey, if it’s ok for the CIA, then it’s ok for the Bush administration, huh?

Kids, today’s new word is “Impeachment”. Your exercise for today is to go look up in the Constitution how and why an elected official is tried for impeachment.

Heckler: Yes it is perversion on the face of it, but also I know that it is part of the book and not the entire story. I once wrote a short that had as part of it, sex between a 13 y.o. and a 14 y.o. I wondered if the part would offend the readers and even be a basis for the publisher to not print the story. But the story line was that a man for his birthday was given by his wife who was his childhood sweetheart a gift of time travel to one day out of his life.

His chose to go back to the first day they met, armed with the knowledge he had gain from some many years of marriage. He seduced her and they had sex for the first time, but upon returning to the present he learned a tragic result. When he awoke his world as he had known it had changed and finally he went to his should be mother-in-laws. To learned that the love of his life, the woman who he was to marry and be happy all his days. Had died in child birth when she was just barely 14!

It was the first story of mine ever published and got some nice reviews too!The point is that as long as it is a important part of the story and is needed to drive the story to where it is to go. Anything is fair game and allowed to be written in and besides sleazy sells.

    Hank: Good point.

    Hey writerdog,

If you write about people for an adult audience then sex sooner or later will rear its ugly head!

That being said, an author that has a history of continually celebrating explicit sex that demeans women and exploits children might not be the one that I would think is senatorial material.

It will be interesting to see how the MSM and the democratic leadership handles this.

It sounds like your book handled underage sex with good taste.

Sex is a part of life, there’s nothing wrong with writing about it. Some of the stuff this guy put in print is pretty disgusting though. Dad on son sex? Kind of makes my skin crawl. I don’t know what the rest of the book is about, but if this is any indication I really don’t think I want to know.

    Heckler–

That Drudge report has already been debunked.

Webb was writing about a group of people that actually do this–it’s part of their culture (not that I approve or condone it). It’s not sexual.

Too bad Drudge has never been within 1000 miles of a war-zone like Webb has. Maybe Drudge’d be a little less gung-ho and judgemental . . .

You also have to ask yourself why a gay man like Drudge has to keep himself so tightly locked in the closet.

    Quote of the Day:

“Barring any cataclysmic events, the struggle will yet go on for years. The passage of time will make it clear to even the more slow among us that the government is the foremost threat to the life, and liberty of the folk. The government will no doubt make today’s oppressiveness look like grade school work compared to what they have planned in the future. Meanwhile, there are those of us who continue to hope that somehow the few can do what the many have not. We are cognizant that before things get better they will certainly get worse as government shows a willingness to use ever more severe police state measures against dissidents. This changing situation makes it clear that those who oppose state repression must be prepared to alter, adapt, and modify their behavior, strategy, and tactics as circumstances warrant. Failure to consider new methods and implement them as necessary will make the government’s efforts at suppression uncomplicated. It is the duty of every patriot to make the tyrant’s life miserable. When one fails to do so he not only fails himself, but his people.” Louis Beam

We are witnessing the death of multiracialism on the streets of Paris and it is sweet! It is ironic that the evils of multiracial democracy are being excercised on the very same streets where the anti-Christ notions of the French Revolution, egalitarianism and such rot were spawned. That irony is delicious indeed!

Ahead of October 27 anniversary of nationwide Third World racial meltdown

As America prepares for Halloween, France is girding for a wave of attacks from Muslim youths—a reprise of the deadly French riots of last year.

A leaked French intelligence report warns that during the first week of November, a school holiday (Nov. 1 or All Saint’s Day), Muslim riots could convulse the country.

On Monday, Le Figaro, the leading center-right newspaper in the country, quoted a confidential report written by the Renseignements Généraux (RG), the French equivalent of the FBI. The 17-page RG report, dated 11 October, states that the root causes of last year’s riots are still in place. The authorities are especially concerned with All Saints Day when “many urban youths are left to their own and have more time to cause unrest.”

Not that France has been a peace since last year’s riots. In the past few weeks alone, several policemen were ambushed by youths who seemed intent on killing them. In response, the French Interior Ministry asked the police to keep a low profile and not to show themselves in the Muslim suburbs in order to avoid tension.

Since appeasement alone is not a strategy. French authorities are keeping a force of some 50,000 riot police in permanent stand-by. A ministry spokesman said it is important to find “the good balance: not overreact to the situation, but at the same time, not underestimate it either.”

A local prefect (a provincial governor) added: “In case of trouble, we will have to be able to control events for a prolonged period without running out of forces.”

Last year’s intifada lasted three weeks. It petered out when the authorities asked the media to stop devoting attention to the riots.

The situation, however, never returned to normal. Unless one considers (as some French officials seem to do) the current situation as “normal.” In the first six months of this year there were 50,000 acts of urban violence by Muslims. On average 15 police officers, fire fighters or other public officials are attacked per day and 100 cars are set alight per night.

Gangs of immigrant vandals operate in a paramilitary fashion. A spokesman for the French police officers union, himself a policeman, has that France is in the midst of a “civil war.”

Interestingly, no public official said the union was exaggerating.

The RG report, cited by Le Figaro, however, says that there is no evidence that the gangs coordinate their attacks across different suburbs.

The latest serious incident was a pitched battle between rioters and policemen in Grande-Borne, a suburb of Paris, on Sunday afternoon after youths had torched a city bus. Shortly after 2 PM immigrant youths stopped the vehicle, ordered the driver and the passengers to get out and set it afire.

In fact, some blame the media have for reporting the bus attack, thereby, “adding to the tensions.” Blaming the messenger is about all France can do these days.

I voted early in the Ellsworth County courthouse, and out of curiosity opted to use the county’s new whiz bang electronic voting system. Much to my surprise, I was handed a conventional-looking ballot, and instructed to feed it into the machine.

With about as much clicking and whirring as an MIR machine, the ballot was at last accepted. The process of digesting the ballot took a minute or two, and presently, after another wait, a facsimile of the ballot popped up on the touch screen. I voted. Each of my touches was emphasized with a color, so I couldn’t make a mistake, and a final screen allowed me to change my mind or recast my vote, until I was satisfied. The machine then popped and whirred, and at last spewed out my ballot, which it had marked for me. I was then instructed to put the ballot in a ballot box. I could have chosen, if I had wanted to, to mark the exact same ballot I was given with a pencil. If I had done so, I would have saved about five minutes.

The Ellsworth County Clerk told me that the ballots would be counted electronically by a machine which could handle about 70 a minute. I guess that’s the improvement.

After voting on the new electronic system, I had to admit to myself that Kansas, at least in Ellsworth County, still has a few charms.

Iraqi PM Maliki blames US for violence and chaos:

“Iraqi PM blames U.S. for instabilityBY JAY PRICEMcClatchy NewspapersBAGHDAD – Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki continued his open dispute with American officials Thursday, blaming the U.S.-led coalition for Iraq’s chaos and faulting its military strategy.

His sharp comments, in an interview with Reuters, came as the White House and Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld sought to play down the idea of a growing rift between the United States and the Iraq government.

According to a partial transcript of the interview distributed by Reuters, Maliki said he thought that Iraqi troops, left to their own devices, could re-establish order in Iraq in six months, not the 12 to 18 months that top U.S. commander Gen. William Casey had predicted Tuesday.”

Hmmmm, it must be time for a(nother) writer to weigh in on the Allen/Webb thing.

“If you write about people for an adult audience then sex sooner or later will rear its ugly head!”

True, Hank, in many cases. It’s all in how one uses the sex…or doesn’t. It can be written as a natural part of the relationship, or it can be used gratuitously aka sex for sex’s sake. I prefer the former.

Writerdog made another good point. Taking a few sentences out of context is foolish. There’s no way of knowing what the writer is trying to convey in the story when someone does that. A major key in writing is to “show, don’t tell,” meaning you show the characters doing something that portrays who they are and why they are doing it, instead of simply telling the reader. It makes for a much more interesting story.

I’d lay odds that most of you guys have read what many consider porn. Penthouse Letters? Pure fiction, but widely read, and no one thinks anything of it. Yeah, I admit to having read a few and laughed until my sides hurt. *grin*

Allen may find that his attack on Webb for this will backfire for some people. It isn’t that much different than the guy in Texas who’s claiming his female opponent wrote porn.

    Sad. Really sad.

J R:” Mr. Tiahrt, you’ve been sitting there silent with a rather absent looking expression for close to 3 hours now. Have you nothing to say about your accountabiity to your constituents?”

    Todd Tiahrt: “I’m Todd Tiahrt.”

J R: “I see. Let’s move on shall we? Mr Tiahrt, you were elected with the Republican wave that took control of the House in 1994. You key position in that campaign was that government had become too entrenched with long term congressman and was thus too beholden to special interests. Your answer for this was term limits on congressman. Yet you are now running for your seventh term in the House. Isn’t that at odds with your earlier position and haven’t you yourself become a part of the entrenched special interests you once campaigned against?”

Todd Tiahrt: “I’m Todd Tiahrt and I want to be your congressman.”

J R:”Let’s take a break. When we come back, I will ask Mr. Tiahrt about the Mark Foley affair.”

    Todd Tiahrt: “I’m Todd Tiahrt.”

    J R: “Yes you certainly are and I’m J R and we’ll be back.”

Message from Garth Mcginn Website, DEBATING 101.

Wichita, KS, October 27, 2006: Feeling the frustration of fellow Kansans over the absence of a debate between the 4th Congressional Candidates, first and foremost, it needs to be said that, as the challenger in this race, I can not “edict” a debate for the voters of the 4th Congressional District in Kansas. I do not possess the power or the money to make that happen. Second, a debate, if it happens, needs to be a free and open debate where the incredibly serious problems facing our nation are actually discussed. Otherwise, the debate is meaningless. Third, you must have a sponsor for the debate and, fourth, you must have press coverage for the debate or no one will know about it. Lastly, you must have at least two candidates or I’ll be spending a lot of time debating myself; a fundamentally scary thought in any setting. All this being said, despite being a political rookie that our esteemed Congressman should be able to mop the stage with, I will pledge to make myself available any time, any place, any where so long as the conditions outlined above that make a debate, well, a debate are followed.

    Good post cin.

EAGLE EDITORS?? Why do you not sponsor a debate between Garth McGinn and Todd Tiahrt.

Local TV channels KSNW, KAKE, KWCH,KPTS, KICT “News”radio KNSS? You have studios and so a forum for such a debate. Get on it! Or answer why you won’t.

We want a debate between Garth McGinn and Todd Tiahrt. If Tiahrt won’t show, then let McGinn debate an empty chair.Until then I will use congressman Tiahrts record to answer FOR him for the next 10 days if I have to.J R: “Mr Tiahrt? We have no other forum to understand your views. On your website you do not even mention debates with your democratic challenger Garth Mc Ginn. Can you explain this apparent lack of regard for your constituents and the democratic process?”

    Todd Tiahrt: “Im Todd Tiahrt!”

J R:”Yes you have made that abundantly clear. I see we have a number of questions from the audience. As this is their only way to ask them of you, I will keep you in that chair and let you answer those questions until election day. cin has asked about the minimum wage. You and you party tied an increase in the minimum wage to a bill that would have eliminated the estate tax. Congressman the estate tax affects only a few thousand of the wealthiest people in the entire country and in Kansas most likely affects less than a 100. In your congressional district the estate tax likely affects fewer people than would fit comfortably in an elevator. By tying an increase in the minimum wage for millions of the poorest of working people to a permanent tax break for a mere handful of the most wealthy, aren’t you sending the message that you represent not the people of your district but the very wealthy special interests you originally ran against?”

Todd Tiahrt: “I’m Todd Tiahrt and I approved this message.”

J R: “Toss out your questions folks. Todd and I will do our best to answer them.”

    Todd Tiahrt: I’m Todd Tiahrt.”

J R:”And telethon ask tele Todd continues right after this.”

Nathan, I’ll have to check it out on Amazon. Could be the publisher decided to re-issue it. Hey, publishers don’t care, as long as they can make money, and a re-issue of that book would definitely bring in some of that.

Personally, it doesn’t matter. I choose whose pockets I want to help line. :) Mrs. Cheney’s wouldn’t be among them. She and the mister have plenty. And more.

Thanks Mr Moderator. Sorry, but I have another question. A couple of years ago, while the country was in crisis mode, the republicans put it all on hold and held an emergency session of congress late on a Sunday night for saving Terri Schiavo. Imagine that. All of them stopped what they were doing on a Sunday night and flew back to Washington to help a brain dead woman.

Would you ask representative Tiahrt, that if relected, would he promise to hold emergency sessions of congress for people who live in the fourth district. Can you imagine how powerful that would be? To have our own congressman, demanding help from his fellow neocons, to fly in and solve real problems…wow…goose bumps just thinking of it..

I have lots of friends that have needs. Some of them have health care issues. Some can’t afford monthly prescriptions, and can’t understand why we even have them if they can’t afford to buy them. Some of these conditions are even life threatening. But only really really rich people can afford to be sick.

I have friends that need medical attention but won’t even go to the doctor, because they can’t afford the tests.

Isn’t this worthy of Shiavo Sunday?

Then lots of parents are very depressed about leave no child behind, and the disaster it has created in our schools. They pretty much feel like leave no child behind was just a sick joke, pretty much destroying our schools. That too, would be a good emergency session.

There are tons of people brain dead with alzheimers. Yet, no emergency session for them.

There are people dying of heart disease and parkinsons, and cancer and ms, and breast cancer, and yet no schiavo sunday for them.

What about the kids dying in IRAQ…For no reason. Without enough to help, without proper equipment…..there you another schiavo sunday.

Tons of people in the fourth district are barely making it. Not even enough money for food. They need answers. Another emergency session.

Anyway, could you please ask congressman Tiahrt, if he could extend the good will of schiavo sunday

Fair question, Hank, and I don’t know; saw the article, noticed it covered the period October 1 through October 17, thought I’d post the link. Also, on another thread, someone posted their thought that Hillary ought to spend some of her warchest to benefit other Dems; the article noted her $2 million “gift” during the reporting period.

Do you recall the approximate dates the Dems were talking about borrowing the $10 million? Reason I’m wondering is to see if it correlates with the FEC filing.

It is my sense that the FEC filing that was the subject of the link I posted did not include the $10 million, for two reasons: 1) the date of the link you found; and 2) while far from an expert in FEC matters, if it was included, it seems to me that there would be mention of it in the article, as it seems to me that would be required to be disclosed.

    Thanks for the link, Hank.

As I have said before it is too bad that McGinn hasn’t gained traction. With all the woes of the GOP – Bush, Kline, Barnett – this would be a good year for an upset. Todd got in during a GOP sweep year; this seems to be shaping up as a Dem year – especially in Kansas.

Hank, have spent some time w/Google; the link you posted relates back to a Hotline blog post of 10/17/06; all other links I found on the first three pages relating to this mention it as “fact”, tying it back to the Hotline posting. So, I don’t know if the DNC did, indeed, borrow the $10 million and loan it to the DNCC. We will need to await the eom October FEC filing, I guess, to find this out.

This looks interesting. A new movie, The Death of a President, is presented as a documentary, although it is fiction.

Bush is assassinated by what are assumed Islamic radicals, although the true assassin(s) is/are not revealed until the end. This is “futuristic,” the assassination supposedly occuring in 2007 and the movie taking place in 2009.

“Bush’s fictional death turns out to be the result of his own Iraq policies, but while the movie is critical of Bush, it shows his death as leading to a worse fate: the ascendency of Dick Cheney to the Oval Office.”

The film is British, and you can read a review of it here:
