Frontline’s The Lost Year in Iraq offers a sobering examination at the utter devastation Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld have wreaked in Iraq. The prewar planning for occupation and setting up a democratic government wasn’t flawed. THERE WAS NO PLAN. Zip, nada, zilch. The Three Stooges wouldn’t have done a worse job.

Who’s behind the “Progress Kansas” Receiving $25,000 from Liberal Missouri Group? Why was address conveniently left out of Missouri report? Why must we find Kansas political money reported in Missouri before Kansas?

In the November general election, let’s VOTE OUT INCUMBENTS. And then elect new office-holders regardless of which political party they belong to.
AMERICA HELD HOSTAGE:DAY 2097….
Presidency held hostage:825 Days left.
Congress held hostage:80 Days left.
HAVE A NICE DAY.
heartlander–YA’ KNOW WHAT MAKES ME SICK?
All the while, twits like meadowpoop are running in circles shouting:THE DEMS HAVE NO PLAN!!THE DEMS HAVE NO PLAN!!
THAT’S WHAT MAKES ME SICK.
There can’t be a plan. Bush has left us with no good choices. I suppose we could pray. Now there’s a plan.
Hey Meadowlurk,Ya see this?

Looks like your ego ideal is fading in the homestrech. See you at the Morrison victory party.
And it was the Republicans who want to stop Plan B. Stay the course, fellas!
Hehehe, nice Steven!
But remember, Republicans “don’t believe in polls.”
Too much like science apparently . . .
Can we work to insure Tanker Todd is not re-elected? Will we vote for Garth McGINN? I hope so.I think Garth, as unknown as he is, can be a new fresh voice for moderates and independents in district 4. In reviewing todd’s record I can’t see much of anything he has actually accomplished for the district / Kansas in 12 years. He voted 4 times against a Congressional Investigation into the Halliburton, Caci et al contracts in Iraq that have squandered billions and adversely affected our soldiers ability to fight the best fight. He purports to supporting our troops yet has voted for legislation / appropriations that have REMOVED 2 billion dollars from the Military Personnel budget. I cannot find any legislation, supporting the military that todd has sponsored or co-sponsored in the last 4 years. He recently voted for a meager 2.2% pay raise for the military, even though DOD and the Senate had approved a 2.7% pay raise. Todd has also been a close ally of Tom Delay, the Texas rep that resigned when he was indicted for campaign fund raising irregularities in Texas and money laundering. Todd gave and received money from delays various shadowy PACs.GARTH McGINN, although new, can and will be part of the new Democratic Congress that will take aggressive steps in Ethics reform, Immigration reform. and tax reform. I believe he can be instrumental in bringing / advocating for the alternative fuels industry in Kansas, creating thousands of jobs, and providing new revenue sources for kansas farmers — he deserves our support.Tell our friends — tell your neighbors — think of the positive headlines it will bring to the nation when the unknown Democrat, Garth McGINN, from Kansas defeats an entrenched conservative republican lackey without the benefit of much if any help from the DNC.his web site is:www.gogarth.org he will appreciate any help you can provide.
Stealing from IAN :Viva McGINNVote McGINN IN !!!!!!!!!!!!!
When will Galahad and Joe Williams meet to settle their bet from a year ago?
I can understand how Galahad doesn’t want to reappear. Who would want to admit that they once posted the uninformed and ill-considered nonsense that he/she did?
Even though it appears that Galahad has won the bet, that was luck only.
BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) — Insurgent attacks killed 10 U.S. service members in a single day in Iraq, the U.S. military said Wednesday.
Four coalition soldiers died in a roadside bomb attack west of Baghdad on Tuesday about 6:50 a.m.
Less than three hours later, another coalition soldier died when gunmen shot at his patrol in northern Baghdad.
A sixth soldier was killed about 1:10 p.m. when his vehicle was hit by a homemade bomb, also north of the capital.
In Diyala province, northeast of the Iraqi capital, three soldiers assigned to 3rd Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, were killed as the “result of enemy action” during military operations, officials said.
In Anbar province, west of Baghdad, one Marine assigned to Regimental Combat Team 7 died Tuesday of wounds “due to enemy action.”
As of Wednesday, 67 U.S. service members have
*****
Bush was right, we are “turning the corner in Iraq.” Cheney: “it’s just a few dead-enders.” Rumsfeld: “it may be six days, could be six weeks, I doubt six months.”
But the conservatives still back the war, right up to actually fighting it themselves or paying taxes to fund it.
But when it comes to putting a magnet on their car (stickers might tarnish the finish, don’t you know), they are SO THERE for our troops.
Interesting,
I too have a bet with an unidentifiable nic. I have very little confidence that I will win. I’m sure the republicans will retain the house and senate but I’m afraid they will lose a few house seats, therefore I’ll lose the bet.
Should I demand a face to face to pay off?
I think the bet was with ProudLib but I’m not sure. I think ProudLib is posting under another nic, but I’m not sure.
I really don’t remember the left-wing bunch of nitwits I’m suppose to donate to either. I think the bet was for $50 but, again, I’m not sure.
Oh well,

Stephan questions Kline fundraisingFormer AG says church contribution strategy ‘bothers me’
By Scott Rothschild (Contact)
Wednesday, October 18, 2006
Topeka — Nearly three weeks ago, former Atty. Gen. Bob Stephan resigned as a special assistant to Atty. Gen. Phill Kline. At the time, Stephan wouldn’t say what caused him to leave, citing only “personal matters.”
Now he’s talking.
Stephan said Tuesday he resigned because he was upset by Kline’s strategy of using churches to raise campaign funds.
And he’s particularly upset about an instance where a church made donations to a business owned by Kline’s wife, Deborah.
“When you use your faith to shuttle money into your for-profit corporation, that bothers me. Especially when you are there, certainly giving voice to your faith, but with the credential of being the attorney general,” Stephan said in an interview with the Journal-World.
Kline’s campaign said there was nothing wrong with Kline raising campaign contributions through his church contacts, nor was there anything wrong with a church contributing to SWT Communications Inc., which is owned by Kline’s wife.
“SWT did receive what they call ‘love offerings’ from the churches,” Kline spokeswoman Sherriene Jones said. She said it is a common way for churches to provide an honorarium.
Stephan assists Kline
Kline, a Republican, is locked in a fierce election campaign against Democrat Paul Morrison, the Johnson County district attorney.
Stephan has been a longtime figure in Republican politics in Kansas.
He served as attorney general from 1979 to 1995. He threw his support behind moderate Republican David Adkins in the GOP’s 2002 attorney general’s primary race.
But after Kline, considered a conservative Republican, defeated Adkins and then won the general election, Stephan provided legal work for Kline on several issues.
His assistance to Kline was seen as a way for both sides of the GOP to reach out to one another.

Church memo
But Stephan said he was upset to learn in September that Kline was using churches as part of a strategy to raise campaign funds.
In a memo Kline wrote to his campaign staff that was leaked then to the Journal-World, he told staff that after he spoke at a church, they needed to have church leaders line up contributors and organize volunteers.
The memo brought a round of condemnation from some organizations that said Kline was jeopardizing the churches’ tax-free status under Internal Revenue Service rules.
But Stephan said he was told by someone that after Kline spoke this summer at Light of the World Christian Center in Topeka, the minister asked congregants to write checks to the church, and then the church would write a check to SWT Communications, which produces radio spots about historical events that are sold across the state.
“That bothers me because the public doesn’t know who is giving money to Phill Kline,” Stephan said.
Stephan said he spoke with Kline’s deputy chief Eric Rucker and former communications director Whitney Watson.
Stephan said they told him there was nothing wrong with the practice and they weren’t going to change it, but that they wouldn’t put their statements in writing, like he had asked.
At that point, “I said, ‘Forget it, I’m off the train,’” Stephan said.
SWT donations
Jones, the spokeswoman for Kline, said it’s legal for the church to donate money to SWT Communications. She said the “love offerings” that day from Light of the World to SWT totaled $1,339.
Carol Williams, executive director of the Kansas Government Ethics Commission, said the state can’t tell churches who they can give money to as long as “they’re giving to the company, and that’s where it stays,” she said.
But, she said, it would be illegal for the church to give money to SWT Communications and for the company to then convert that to a donation to Kline’s campaign.
“You cannot give in the name of another,” she said.
Jones said that wasn’t happening.
During the year, the Kline campaign has paid $3,600 to SWT Communications to store campaign materials.
Jones said the money was paid to SWT to store campaign papers and office furniture in a metal building behind the Kline family home in Topeka.
In June, SWT made a donation of $1,181 to the Kline campaign.
“She wanted to contribute to her husband’s campaign,” Jones said.
Deborah Kline declined comment, referring questions about the payments to SWT to her husband. But he was on the campaign trail and did not return a message left on his cell phone.
Kline’s chief deputy Rucker didn’t return a phone call for comment. Rev. Greg Varney, the pastor of Light of the World Christian Center, also did not return a phone call seeking comment.
Stephan said he decided to publicly state his unease with Kline’s campaign fundraising after praying about what he should do.
“I’ve hesitated, frankly, because Republicans have helped me all my political career,” he said. “But there are some things you decide are important.
“This speaks to the candidate. I’ve just decided to take whatever is coming.”

For laughs
Hi Hank – at least with our bet we know who each other is. Your meet-up idea way back when was a good one. We fight a lot but at least keep it up to a certain level – usually. ;^)
This thread looks like Murtha wrote the posts. Defeatocrats is right.
hotlick – check out what the Baker panel says:
http://www.netscape.com/viewstory/2006/10/17/iraq-study-group-assesses-war-and-rules-out-victory/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nysun.com%2Farticle%2F41371%3Fpage_no%3D1&frame=true
Baker’s Panel Rules Out Iraq Victory
By ELI LAKE – Staff Reporter of the SunOctober 12, 2006WASHINGTON — A commission formed to assess the Iraq war and recommend a new course has ruled out the prospect of victory for America, according to draft policy options shared with The New York Sun by commission officials.
Did you miss that the report was still being amended and was not final?
Dear Ken,
From Garth’s website it appears that he would be no more than a butt-boy for the democratic leadership in the house. He would probably vote contrary to my wishes 80 to 90% of the time.
Todd on the other hand is with me 60 to 70% of the time. Todd returns my phone calls.
Why should I vote for Garth and trade experience for a promise of higher taxes?
Hank
No, hotlick, I did not miss that. I suspect that it will end up even worse.
Of course you do, Ben. That’s how you and yours roll.
Did u guys see the article in today’s WE paper about there being plenty of parking for the Arena???
Its amusing that they think all of these lots will be open and available for arena goers to use. I will bet you that half of those land owners will close the lots either for no use or to charge for parking.
If I owned a lot close, i would charge $10-$15 bucks for parking.
More from Mr. Baker (in case you missed it on the other thread):
http://www.cnn.com/2006/POLITICS/10/18/iraq.baker.reut/index.html
Tony, of course the lots (privately owned) will not be open for the general public’s use for events at the Albino Pachyderm without charge. I suspect if one wished to pay $20 per event at those located close, a parking space might be available, however.
To the folks planning this monstrosity: from my experience talking with the owners of some of the lots, don’t confuse their making their lots available for River Festival parking without charge (in an exercise of civic cooperation) with foregoing the opportunity to make money over the year from whatever events are held at the Arena.
Hey Ben,
Most people know where to find me, I’m not hiding.
I really believe most people on this BLOG have a pretty good heart. I think they’re stupid, of course, but I have no real animosity toward them.
I stay out of most threads because by now the comments on both sides are pretty predictable. Unproductive.
Hank
From the article on the baker report:
“”I will say one other thing — there’s no magic bullet for the situation in Iraq. It is very, very difficult,” Baker said on Tuesday in a speech to the World Affairs Council of Houston.”So anybody who thinks that somehow we’re going to come up with something that is going to totally solve the problem is engaging in wishful thinking,” he said.”
But didn’t Cheney and Rumsfield tell us this whole thing would be easy and over in less than 6 months?
“”We will report after the election in order to try and take our report out of domestic politics,” he said.”
How convenient.
“In the run-up to the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in March 2003, Baker warned President George W. Bush against attacking the country without the backing of a large international coalition like the one Baker helped assemble for the Gulf War in 1991.”
And why should we believe that Bush Jr. will listen now?
Wingnuts here’s a question for you. Which would you rather pay? Money to fund the debt to a foreign power[ China, India and Japan] or taxes which stay in America.http://www.atimes.com/atimes/China/HJ19Ad01.html
Article in China Times discussing how easy it is to bring the USA to it’s knees. Hey we made alot of friend’s out there. Keep up the good work team bush.
Hank–
I agree. Most of the people seem like good Americans on this blog, even the right-wingers like yourself.
The bet you made is with me. I used to post under ProudLib, TrueBlue, Galahad and Antares.
Practically everybody that has been around this blog for awhile already knows this.
Now that I figured out how to use TypeKey to verify my sig, I haven’t used any other i.d.’s.
I could probably make it to a meet-up. I’ve already met CF, JR, .morg, DarwinsDisciple, Ben Huie and Doug at other venues. Wichita isn’t that big of a town, heh.
Former AG Bob Stephan? As in Robert T.? I never knew he was a Republican. Just goes to show how much I used to care about party affiliation or even understood it. I once was a witness in a divorce hearing in which Robert T. officiated as the judge. The comments he made on one of the conflicts in the case earned my respect for him. I wasn’t aware he was previously working under Kline. If I had… I’m happy to see that he has regained at least some of his common sense.
Hey Capn,
Yea, I figured it was you, but I didn’t want to take a chance and insult either one of you.
I still haven’t given up on that bet. I would be suprised if I won, but I think its more likely republicans will gain seats than lose the house completely.
Hank
Does Todd Tiahrt remember the Contract With America.
He must not. When he went to Washington he promised to limit his term. It was one of the reasons he was elected to office.
But he has been in Washington so long that maybe he simply forgot?
Maybe we should give him a wake up call. His phone number is 202-225-3121. Tell Todd a promise is a promise. A contract is a contract. He should resign from his run for office now.
Anyone?
Why have old threads been locked out from further comment?
Question to the Editors:
I have noticed that comments are closed (for the first time that I’ve noticed) on some topics, but not others. What are the determiners for closing topics? A quick review of the closed topics and others that are not closed will make it clear that it is not based on number of comments, relative recency of comments, or age of the topic. So what are the standards?
I have tried to e-mail that question directly to the editors, and cannot get the e-mail to go through. I think either they’re not accepting my e-mail (doubtful), or something (or someone – me) is screwed up on my end. In any case, I’d appreciate an answer, either from the editors or one of our other knowledgable posters.
From Fox and Hen WebsiteIn 1994, Republicans led by Newt Gingrich told Americans that if they elected a Republican Congress for the first time in forty years, the Republicans would enact and honor a platform they called the Contract with America. It was a bold contract. It promised a lot of sweeping reforms. It made very specific commitments. It became the Republicans’ ralllying cry.
They ended the contract with the following: “On September 27, 1994, 300 candidates for public office gathered on the steps of the U.S. Capitol and signed their names to document. Their pledge: ‘If we break this contract, throw us out.’”
Works for us. But many of those Republicans are still serving in Congress, nearly twelve years later.
We haven’t forgotten and we cannot forgive. Too much has been lost; too many lives destroyed, too many hopes crushed and opportunities squandered. these guys with their lies, their deceptions, their perversions, weakened America.
In 2006, let’s begin to take back America by extracting these self-serving schills from the body politic.

Tankerless Todd will, unfortunately, probably get re-elected. However, if he should get ‘term-limited’ I wonder where he would retire to? Is he a Kansan?
OK, correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think Todd ever promised to limit his term in Congress.
Now I realize that the ‘Contract with America’ had term limits as part of the Contract. Todd signed on to the Contract. I believe that the republicans made a good faith attempt to pass most of the Contract and term limits didn’t make it.
Now I understand that to most of you the fact that Todd is still in office and running again seems to be a ‘broken promise’ to you but I think he lived up to his promise.
If I promise to take everyone on this BLOG to Pizza Hut tonight and it turns out that most of you don’t want to go, the fact that I don’t go alone isn’t a broken promise. (I used the pizza analogy for JR)
If someone can find where Todd actually promised to limit his personal term in Congress instead of merely promising to support term limits for every congressman then I’ll admit that there is a problem with his veracity.
Until then I think it would be more productive to discuss real issues.
Hank
This is not a pipe…..
Todd is my neighbor (kinda) he has a home in Goddard. I think he was raised and went to school in Minnesota.
If he retired from congress he would probably become more active in Kansas politics, governor or senator perhaps.
Hank
hey Ben…
He would probably go the washinton route…since it seems he has adapted to it quite well..
I just phoned his campaign headquarters to see if he had any scheduled debates with Garth.
They said that there would be no debates. That he was to busy. He was in Washington.
I reminded her to remind Todd that everyone is debating. Even the lieutenant Governors.
An arrogant turnaround to his term limits contract with Kansas.
He is to arrogant now. Maybe afraid too.
Whatever. It is disgraceful that our own congressman won’t even come home and sit face to face with his challenger.
What a girlie man….
Another poll to argue about, dispute, etc.; but one with some interesting results, such as 74% think Congress is out of touch, and other interesting tidbits:
http://www.cnn.com/2006/POLITICS/10/18/congress.poll/index.html
I tend to agree with cin – that Todd would stay in DC. Just like Glickman did.
Depending upon the outcome of the midterm election, the ability to remain in DC might not be such a viable alternative for Mr. Tiahrt. Maybe his old desk at Boeing would be available…
Vaughn:
Congress is out of touch? Shocking!!
Duh. Congress has ALWAYS been out of touch. That has little to do with party, and everything to do with the nature of the political system. The one thing Republicans and Democrats agree on is that maintaing one’s seat is the most important goal in Congress.
Dear cin,
Nobody knows who his challenger is. Why would you debate someone when the net result would only add credibility and name recognition to your opponent?
I’ve tried to follow Garth and his campaign (such as it is) and I haven’t seen where Garth has been demanding a debate.
Has Todd actually turned him down? Has any legitamate organization tried to arrange a debate between them? Or have Todd’s apponents merely found another way to bad mouth Todd without actually having to discuss the issues?
Hank
GMC, once again you’ve hit the nail on the head. The remarkable piece of this is that this is the first time since 1992 any poll similar to the one I linked has this result; in 1992, 75% felt this way.
Personally, if anyone had asked, I would have replied in the affirmative irrespective of the year.
I’ll post it again, so it doesn’t get buried and lost. Ben, JR, some of you with more technical expertise or info than I; maybe you can answer this:

What gives?
Damn, girl. you’re right.I just mailed heckler with my theory that they started closing them because of all the damn trolls posting intolerable shit in the middle of the night.Like wetbakboy or whatever that pussies fake name was.
hank..
Apparently there have been several attempts by Garth to get Todd to debate.
Hank, as for your statement that Garth would be “nothing more than a buttboy for the Democratic leadership”. When you compare the values of the 2 I’d say that would be a good thing. Let’s Start with Newt vs. Nancy:
Nancy Pelosi’s “left-wing values”"Upon graduation in 1962, she married Georgetown University graduate Paul Pelosi.” “Pelosi and her husband, Paul Pelosi, a native of San Francisco, have five children: Nancy Corinne, Christine, Jacqueline, Paul and Alexandra, and five grandchildren.”
Newt Gingrich’s “right-wing values”In 1981, Newt dumped his first wife, Jackie Battley, for Marianne, wife number 2, while Jackie was in the hospital undergoing cancer treatment. Marianne and Newt divorced in December, 1999 after Marianne found out about Newt’s long-running affair with Callista Bisek, his one-time congressional aide. Gingrich asked Marianne for the divorce by phoning her on Mother’s Day, 1999. Newt (57) and Callista (34) were married in a private ceremony in a hotel courtyard in Alexandria, Va. in August, 2000.
“He famously visited Jackie in the hospital where she was recovering from surgery for uterine cancer to discuss details of the divorce. He later resisted paying alimony and child support for his two daughters, causing a church to take up a collection. For all of his talk of religious faith and the importance of God, Gingrich left his congregation over the pastor’s criticism of his divorce.”
Shall we add Dennis Hastert’s values to the list? Seriously, your comment was unreasonable, unintelligent and uninformed. We could say the same for Todd. He has been a “buttboy” for the republican leadership and the Bush administration.
“What gives?”
It’s an anti-spam manuever. Since spambots don’t care how stale a thread is, they’ll often post on something that’s days or months old.
Closing the thread keeps that from happening.
I do wonder what criteria they’re using, though. I hope it’s inactivity rather than age. Some of the most interesting threads went on and on and on.
Hank, YOU BEEN SLAMMED.
RAGE, kinda like the thread about Barnett’s support for the BOE?I’ll hafta look back and see if any wingers are ready to admit their guilt. yeah right
Dear cin,
I believe you. I still wonder, politically speaking, what’s in it for Todd?
If you asked all of the potential voters in the 4th congressional district of Kansas the name of Todd’s opponent what would be the percentage of the people that knew?
My wife is very knowlegdeable about national and local politics and I just asked her and she doesn’t know.
Hank
Tracy,
Didn’t feel a thing.
dave s,
As a human being, Newt isn’t my favorite person. I beieve he is a brilliant historian and one of the best politicians in the country.
I also believe that he has a very good chance of being the next president.
Dennis Hastert? Good man. I believe he is an honorable and decent person. Any proof to the contrary?
Hank
Hank,I was told early on by the Congressman’s staff there would be no debates.”Early on”–as in before anyone had announced against him.
Hastert – he knew about Foley and did nothing. He pushed through pork projects that enriched himself (see another thread where that is discussed)
It’s sad; the Dennis Hastert I knew back in IL has changed dramatically – and NOT for the better. I worked on his freshman campaign.
Rage:
As to closing threads. Judging from what is closed, and what is not, is is absolutely NOT based on inactivity, or age, or number of posts. The cynical in me would say it’s due to not liking the comments . . . but I frankly doubt that as well. The editors here are remarkably hands-off, sometimes too much so.
So I don’t have an explanation. And I can’t raise the editors directly.
I am going to Tiahrts website. I do that now and again to see if he has anymore to say about his friend and fellow arch conservative the child solicitor Mark Foley. Tiahrt has had almost nothing to say about it so far. I wonder why? I’ll be wondering why more loudly if Tiahrt does not get more forthcoming very soon.
While I’m there, I’m going to email Todd and demand that he debate Garth McGinn.
Why don’t we all do that?
An old ditty I remember from years ago …
Should I write my congressman?
Every Congressman has two ends, a sitting end and a thinking end. And, since his entire career depends on his seat, why bother friend?
Ben Huie,cc. Hank Price,
Here we go again: Hank Price asking for ‘proof.’ The only thing Hank is willing to acknowledge are stains on a dress. Anything short of that gets sacrificed to ‘truthiness.’
Hey mrcontraversy!
I would be disapointed if Todd debated Garth, he has nothing to gain. He leads Garth n the polls 2 to 1. Anything he does merely gives Garth more name recognition.
Hank
Hank,
“Dennis Hastert? Good man. I believe he is an honorable and decent person.”
He made a quick $2,000,000 real estate profit, after earmarking funds to build a highway near his land.http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qn4155/is_20060615/ai_n16497689
If a Dem had done what Hastert did, Hank would probably be ripping him/her apart.
More of “liberal” (sarcasm!) media’s dysfunctional reporting,
‘Why has CNN devoted 50 times as much coverage to Harry Reid’s land deal as Dennis Hastert’s?’http://mediamatters.org/items/200610180011
I can no longer stand sifting through national politics and community concerns.
Community Thread once a week, please editors.
Until the downtown arena is built, people don’t believe it will function properly or parking available.
Plenty in Wichita to fix and discuss constantly.
I would hate to personally know Washington politicans too long in their jobs. They continue just becuase, self serving, at the expense of voters. They let the political machine keep them in power. Use it for protection when their ethics fail.
What is a Republican, why follow today’s leaders? Bush isn’t a Conservative at all. Economists are very concerned about the Fed borrowing. Tax cuts while wars aren’t winning. Bush might be an idiot economically, history will prove it. He just talks about religion a lot and takes evanglists money.
The man pissed off this planet with his foreign policies.
I can’t remember his wife’s name, the first lady. I remember everyone else’s first lady since Jerry Ford.
Why Democrat, from past history, more civil and community rightist, look at them in Washington, Kerry, Harry Reid, Kennedy, there is no leadership from them in Congress.
Barack Obama is a hope to many but he will suffer in Congress because of bad leadership. Could a really young Senator run for President?
Vice President is more possible, aligned with who?
Forget the parties, are we voting decent ethical people into Washington jobs. Cross party vote should happen all the time.
That’s the ethics of individual’s missing. The staunch belief one party is better than the other.
Politicans should have term limits, three at the most, four possibly but no more after that.
Actually CF,
When you start defaming a person I think that you should have more to go on than the DNC talking-point-of-the-day.
Is Hastert a politician? You don’t get to Congress and become speaker of the House with out being a very good politician.
Is he a good speaker of the House? He’s not my choice! No one on this BLOG has any knowledge of what Hastert knew about Foley’s IMs.
As far as the ‘blue dress’ goes, that is evidence that will stand on it’s own. (pun intended).
Hank
Dear cosmos,
Maybe because there is nothing illegal about what Hastert did and maybe because Hastert didn’t lie about it on his financial statements.
Hank
Well, hank, one of the Republicans is not exactly telling the truth: “confusing puzzle that puts Hastert and his aides at odds with the accounts of other top GOP lawmakers and their aides.”
Page sponsor questioned by House panelANDREW TAYLORAssociated PressWASHINGTON – A Louisiana congressman and sponsor of a page who later received questionable e-mails from ex-Rep. Mark Foley went before a House ethics panel Wednesday to explain how his office handled the teen’s complaint last fall.
GOP Rep. Rodney Alexander appeared Wednesday morning and said he would address reporters after testifying. He says that after he and his staff learned of the e-mails to the former page, his aides contacted the office of House Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., for advice on what to do about communications the boy’s family thought were inappropriate.
Alexander’s account – that the matter was passed on to more senior House members and top staff – has not been challenged. And his testimony is a small piece of a more confusing puzzle that puts Hastert and his aides at odds with the accounts of other top GOP lawmakers and their aides.
Two of those figures, Majority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, and former House Clerk Jeff Trandahl, are scheduled to testify Thursday.
Boehner has said he discussed the Foley situation with Hastert last spring after Alexander informed him of the e-mails. So has Rep. Tom Reynolds, R-N.Y. Foley abruptly resigned from Congress last month after he was confronted with the contents of his messages to former pages.
Republicans are bracing for testimony by Trandahl – a top House aide who was the day-to-day overseer of the page program until leaving Capitol Hill last year. Trandahl confronted Foley about too-friendly e-mails sent to the ex-page.
Trandahl also has handled other alleged incidents regarding Foley, including a 2001 or 2002 episode in which the Florida congressman sent e-mails described as “creepy” to a former page sponsored by Rep. Jim Kolbe, R-Ariz. Kolbe’s office went to Trandahl and the e-mails stopped.
Trandahl also is in position to support testimony by Kirk Fordham, a former top aide to Foley, who has told the panel he informed top House GOP aides of Foley’s inappropriate behavior toward pages years ago. Fordham has testified about an episode several years ago in which a drunk Foley is said to have tried to enter the page dorm.
Those top House GOP aides include Scott Palmer, Hastert’s longtime top aide and confidant, who denies Fordham’s account and who is not mentioned in an account by the speaker’s office regarding the 2005 incident with the Louisiana page.
Hastert aide Palmer has yet to testify; neither has the speaker.
On Tuesday, House Sergeant-at-Arms Wilson Livingood, a member of the Page Board, which oversees the program for high school students who basically function as congressional interns, was questioned for less than two hours. He would not comment afterward.
The ethics panel also heard Tuesday from Paula Nowakowski, chief of staff to Boehner. Boehner has said Hastert told him the Louisiana page’s complaint “had been taken care of.”
Separately this week, Page Board members discussed a camping trip Kolbe took with two former pages and others to the Grand Canyon in 1996, a congressional official said Tuesday. The trip is under review by the Justice Department.
The three lawmakers and two House officials who make up the board took no action and did not have any information beyond recent news accounts of the trip, the official said.
Kolbe, the only openly gay Republican in Congress, is retiring at the end of his term. He has denied through an aide that anything inappropriate occurred during the trip.

Hey Ben,
Nothing in your post is at odds with anything Hastert has said.
Hank
I don’t know Hank. Hastert said he heard nothing prior to the bombshell – these guys are saying he had been told long ago.
Ben, Ben, Ben,
Hastert has always admited to having knowledge of the emails. He claims that he didnt see them, but that the page’s parents thought they were inapropriate and wanted them to stop. Period.
I don’t know if Alexzander ever saw the emails. He said he went to Hastert and that the emails were inapropreate and that the parents merely wanted them to stop. The parents didn’t want them to go any further.
When you read the emails they are wierd, but not sexual. The disgsting IMs didn’t surface until Sept 29th. Foley resigned. Story over.
Almost everything else that has been reported in the news is either half truths or lies to merely make political hay.
Hank
Hank,I concur. At the time, Tiahrt’s people thought he’d be facing Tim Norton or Donald Betts.I think the Congressman has done all he can to distance himself from the messes that were not of his own making. My concern is, will his previous alliances come back to haunt us if the Democrats take control?Rhetorical question–I already know your answer.
Hey mr.
If the democrats take control of congress, God help us! Todd’s previous alignments will be the least of our problems!
Hank
I suspect that Tankerless Todd will have a lot of trouble getting pork projects for the District after the Dems take over.
No worry Ben,
The dems aint goin’ to “take over”!
Hank
To my fellow blog readers:
Write here. Write to the Eagle opinion page and the opinion line. Write to Congressman Tiahrt himself and demand that he debate his Democratic challenger Garth Mc Ginn.
JR,
Really, why?
Hank
I’ll say it here again:
We can work to insure Tanker Todd is not re-elected?
Will we vote for GARTH McGINN? I hope so.I think Garth, as unknown as he is, will be a new fresh voice for moderates and independents in district 4. Todd gave and received money from delays various shadowy PACs.
GARTH McGINN, although new, can and will be part of the new Democratic Congress that will take aggressive steps in Ethics reform, Immigration reform. and tax reform. I believe he can be instrumental in bringing / advocating for the alternative fuels industry in Kansas, creating thousands of jobs, and providing new revenue sources for Kansas farmers — he deserves our support.
Tell your friends — tell your neighbors — think of the positive headlines it will bring to the nation when the unknown Democrat GARTH McGINN, from Kansas defeats an entrenched conservative republican lackey without the benefit of much if any help from the DNC.
his web site is:www.gogarth.org he will appreciate any help you can provide.
Stealing from IAN :Viva McGINNVote McGINN IN !!!!!!!!!!!!!
adding now — I intentioinally keep TT’s name without caps — he doesn’t deserve the extra recognition it might giv him.
Garth can certainly use a contribution to his campaign — if that’s not possible email him and volunteer to have one of his yard signs, canvass your neighborhood, stuff envelopes etc … anything that will give him name recognition at the polling place — WE CAN DO THIS — no more lip service about dumping TT — do something about it —- NOW !!!!
As I do more research watch for future blogs about why not to vote for TT and why to vote for GARTH McGINN. I have had tunnel vision because I am retired from the Air Force and am primarily concerned about military issues — but I will find a whole list of reasons to vote for Garth … future blogs will be shorter –
VOTE FOR McGINN
Good luck Ken!
You don’t have a snowball’s chance in hell! Garth hasn’t a chance!
Retired Air Force? What, pray tell, have the democrats ever done for the military?
Get real.
Hank
Once upon a time a donkey fell down an abandoned well. The ranch hands heard it and saw it was waaayy down there. There was no way of hoisting that donkey up and the ranch hands thought it would be easier to bury the poor donkey so they started shoveling dirt on the beast as they verbally bemoaned his fate. The donkey shook off the dirt, shovelful by shovelful and stepped on it. Gradually there was enough dirt piled on and shaken off that old donkey that he was able to get out of that deep hole. When they saw the donkey they realized it was the deaf one and couldn’t hear all the verbage about how he was supposed to die.
Hank – the moral of the story is that words are just that – words and actions speak a lot more than words ever will.
I’d like to see Tiahrt debate McGinn. I’m not impressed with Tiahrt but I’m willing to give him another shot IF he can convince me. If he makes no effort (other than his lame TV ads) then my vote will be for McGinn.
Julie – do you mean all that money he has doesn’t convince you?
/sarcasm off
Tiahrt will win 65% to 35%Hear me now, believe me later.
sounds about right hotlick – but I will go a bit closer – 60/40
Meanwhile: Morrison by 60/40 and Sebelius by 55/45
Oh, Thornburg 65/35
Oh, Thornburg 65/35
You are right about Sebelius, but Kline will win 52% to 48%
“Really, why?”
In reply, although it wasn’t directed to me, I will say, why not?
Surely TT isn’t afraid to debate his opponent. Surely Hank and others of like mind aren’t afraid to see or hear it. So…WHY NOT? It might be interesting. And perhaps McGinn’s comments in a debate would merely cement the right’s opinions.
If TT is so SURE of his position, wouldn’t this be the opportune moment to prove his unquestionable dedication to this country as a representative?
Isn’t it interesting that Republicans find Newt Gingrich such a brilliant politician and even would make a great president? This is a man that has been married 3 times, divorced twice and was caught with his mistress just a couple blocks down the street from his Congressional office.
If Bill Clinton had done half of those things, every Republican would have ravaged him more than they tried to do for 8 years and continue to do to present day.
For being the party of family values, the GOP’s lack of morality is showing and that is why the average American has had their fill.
Blasting someone for being married 3 times and divorced 2 is stupid and may not reflect lack of family values. I haven’t heard about the mistress. You would actually be blasting Democrats. statistically speaking. I don’t even do that.
Well Hank for one they never lied about the need for a war — when war was being waged (i.e WW II) they stepped forward to insure that war profiteering was minimized and troops had the necessary equipment to wage war. They have always advocated for increased benefits for active duty personnel and veterans. On the other hand — well the republican record — or in this case the lack of one is quite different …
Get your head out of the sand — be an independent thinker and quit buying into the republican propoganda and bull shit —-
2468todd tiahrtwon’t debate
If being married 3 times and divorced 2 and found with a mistress is your version of family values – then you must have one dysfunctional family reunion.
No wonder the GOP party is in trouble.
Hank
………more specifically — what has TT done for the military? Zip – nil nada — his lack of a record speaks for itself — if anything he has done more damage than helped the military —
I’m with ya Ken.
MY research is going to be directed at the connections between Tiahrt and child solicitor Mark Foley. I say we don’t need a representative who may have abetted Foley. Tiahrt is saying nothing.
I may also need to see if I can find the email Todd’s staffer sent me where he suggested that if I did not like how Todd represented me I should move.
HEY EDITORS? Todd Tiahrt won’t debate. Call him and ask him why. Better yet give us a thread to talk about it.
Hank and Hotlick can post about what a brave leader Tiahrt is for ducking the debate.
BETTER YET!! I call on the Eagle to HOST a debate. Let McGinn debate an empty chair if toadie Tiahrt won’t show.
It is time the 4th district of Kansas had a representative that stood for someone besides the Hanks of the world.
I wish someone would ask Mr Tiahrt what happened to the Tanker jobs he said he scored 4 years ago. Also hes been in office 8 years why is it just now he wants to do something about immigration? Hasn’t that been a problem for a long time now?
I think if people want an alternative to Todd Tiahrt (who mispronounces his name, perhaps intentionally as a subliminal to the heartland) it’s going to have to be 2008 or 2010. The tide needs to change to favor democrats, which it is doing, but Kansas is in the back bay. If you want a local grassroots effort, it will take time and money. It will take relentless pressure on the local media by citizens, and then by the media on Tiahrt, to force Tiahrt to debate. Don’t let him get away with 1: make him do at least 3.
BTW, Tiarht was born and raised in South Dakota. He attended Evangel College (now Evangel University, Assemblies of God) in MO, then earned an MBA at Southwest Missouri State. There are a lot of outsiders who have become “naturalized Kansans” by their work on Kansas and Kansans’ behalf, and who have given a lot to Kansas. My spouse is one of these people. I suspect that Tiahrt may possibly be a lackey of the RNC leadership that made him THEIR representative here, which, if true, would make him a CARPETBAGGER.
I met his wife once in a social gathering. She seemed a decent person.
I’m not convinced about the story that her black eye (which may have included a facial fracture) a year or so ago was caused by accidental falling down the steps and landing on her face. I’ve seen a lot of injuries in the ER. When people fall, they put their arms out, and may break an arm or break or sprain a wrist. I have seen a lot of domestic violence cases with women having broken noses and black eyes, though. But I was witness neither to the injury event, nor did I take the history, examine the injury or perform x-rays. But in my armchair-reading capacity, the alleged cause and result, as described was at best very uncommon. I’ve also dealt with abused wives who lied to me about the causes of their injuries. How do I know they lied? Because I took time with them and got them to open up and admit what really happened. I did this to get them the kind of help they really needed.
what about the chamber…what about the league of women voters…why isn’t pressure being placed on todd to debate?
Glickman debated him. He showed enough respect as an encumbent to come home to his people and discuss the issues.
Tiahrt is just chicken. He is ashamed of his record. He is ashamed of the GOP. He doesn’t want to have to answer for the disgraceful things he and his party have done.
His office told me today that he was just to busy to debate. He was in Washington.
But what could todd be busy with.
We know he isn’t doing anything on healthcare.
We know he isn’t doing anything on social security.
We know he isn’t doing anything to help out or kids in IRAQ..
We sure as hell know he isn’t doing anything to hold the administration that lied us into this mess in IRAQ, accountable for their lies….he sure made time to hold Clinton accountable…
We know he isn’t doing anything to help out the middle income..
or to help out the people all over the fourth district making minimum wage…
we know he isn’t busy holding big oil industry executives accountable for minimulating gas prices…
so where is he…and why aren’t people demanding he come home and answer questions…
I was watching a C-SPAN broadcast of a very interesting ACLU conference on torture in which former Navy chief counsel Alberto Mora (Republican, not to be confused with toady Atty Genl Alberto Gonzalez) and Nixon advisor John Dean were panalist. It’s probably going to replay, so people should check listings.
Anyway, one panelist recounted
George Bush has taken up cycling. He went on a ride with his secret service detail down in Crawford, Texas. He saw a little boy with a dog and her pups, and decided to stop. Making some small talk, the president asked,”Are these puppies Republicans?” The boy answered, “Yes Sir, every one of them.”
Bush returned a week later, this time riding with Laura. He thought he’d show off his previous encounter.”What’s your puppies’ political party, Son?”
“Well, some of them are Independents and the rest are Democrats.”
“Son, just last week you told me they were Republicans.”
“They WERE, but their eyes are open now.” ;)
I spoke with the chamber of commerce today. I asked them if they had extened an invitation to tiahrt mcginn for a debate, they told me they had not. That encumbents generally don’t debate. I told them simply wasn’t the case. That Kathleen Sebelius, although way ahead in the polls and way ahead in fund raising still had the respect for the process enough to debate her opponent. Then I reminded them that when Jim Lawing ran for congress Tiahrt debated him once although it was quick on channel 8. Also he debated him in front of a friendly crowd in Winfeld. He also agreed to debate lawing at temple emmanuel, sponsored by the league of women voters, and he was a no show. They were not happy. After the no show and the short spot on KPTS Tiahrt took a major dive in the polls. It was during the Clinton Impeachment, and he thought he was safe.
So if he could debate as an encumbent then, why not now.
call the league of women voters…
call the wichita chamber of commerce…
call the eagle…
call KPTS..
call anyone you can think of.
Ask them to ask todd to commit to 3 debates….
Some of you newer posters may not know this. Some time ago someone at least CLAIMING to be Todd Tiahrt spokesman Chuck Knapp weighed in on one of our threads.
So it is possible Knapp may be keeping track of us here.
Mr Knapp? I know your boss Todd Tiahrt is “busy”. Except for Hank Price,Todd doesn’t have time for his constituents. But could you let him know that his constituents demand that he respect the political process and traditions of this country by facing his challenger in a debate?
JR is right.
If Kathleen Sebelius can make the time for several debates. And Kathleen is one of the most respected Governors in the nation. Her name has been thrown out there many times as a candidate for president even vice president. She still has enough respect for the political process to answer questions about her record.
Why doesn’t Tiahrt have enough respect for the election process..enough respect for the people he serves, to come home 3 times and talk about his record.
So Mr. Knapp. Mr Bell says, Todd is to busy to come back from Washington.
Isn’t it an outrage that he is too busy to face his people. He wants to play it safe….
Tell us Mr Knapp. How does that serve the people of the fourth congressional district.
Instead, all we get are a few token campaign commercials. We know he has the money. So come on home Todd and talk to us.
You called the chamber?
To ask for fairness in this election?
BWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAH
You may as well have called americans for prosperity or club for growth as to call the chamber.
Why not call the koch brothers directly?
Instead of going through the lackeys….
heheheheheheheheh
Well Ksfarmgirl…..yes I did.
Of course they support Todd, but I was curious enough to see how they would handle the question.
And when I pressed them for a better answer, they didn’t like it.
Someone needs to press todd…He needs to come home and answer questions from real people from the fourth district…
ks farm girl you are on to something…
the koch brothers….I never thought about calling them.
jeeze you are on to something big
and then there is john birch which I guess is just an extension…and the the heritage foundation too..:)
Most would take any kind of debate, no matter the comfort level as long as a few people from our town, the ones making minimum wage, the ones without healthcare, and the ones like me security mom types get to ask a few basic questions…
cin, you hold views like this and you are with SOUTHWIND?
WTF?
Judging from the other thread, it appears that Mr. Wetbacks may have seen the error of his ways and slinked back into his sewer.
yikes ks farm girl…didn’t know it was an issue…
it’s just somthing from ks that is beautiful…like the sunsets…sunrises…big sky… big storms…wheat forever in the spring…I can go on and on …like you maybe just a ks girl that every now and then gets cranky about the right wing politicans that seem to ruin the beautiful things about our state….
The whole point of congressional recesses is so that congressmen can return to their constituents to speak to them and to hear from them.
MOST congressmen are in their home districts just now doing that and also repecting our electoral traditions by actually CAMPAIGNING for the office they hold. This includes demonstrating that they should continue to hold their office and not be replaced by answering the challenges from those who would do so.
Todd Tiahrt disrespects that. Even locksteppers like hotlick and Hank should be deeply offended by that. Tiahrt just assumes he gets to keep his job and our trust with no questions asked. He sits in DC doing……what? while he just takes his contituents for granted.
How many Tiahrt signs have you seen? Where are his volunteers who used to stand on the streets?
Todd Tiahrt is campaigning on the SUPER cheap. What WILL he do with the RNC funding he is NOT using to campaign?
Most of us at one time or another have had to report to a boss for a job review. Well for a politician an election is a job review. Todd Tiahrt is a no show for his “review”. What would happen to any of us if we were called for a job review and we sent someone to tell the boss “Sorry! I’m too busy to talk to you.” ?
Hold Todd Tiahrt accountable. Let him take you for granted these 3 weeks and you can be assured he will do it the next 2 years.
once again JR pretty much spells it out!
Hank,
“Maybe because there is nothing illegal about what Hastert did…”
Isn’t this about ethics? Please explain why you believe “what Hastert did” was 100% ethical.
Hank: “… and maybe because Hastert didn’t lie about it on his financial statements.”
Tell us what horrible ethics violation (or illegality) Reid committed by not disclosing his 2001 transfer into a LLC.
He continued to own the land (thru the LLC) until he later sold it.
I will no longer talk about TT — his poor record speaks for itself — much more important that we focus on the need for change and reform in Congress …
GARTH McGINN will be good for the 4th District, Kansas and Congress. His web page is pretty specific about the major issues facing our region and country. Focus on the potential for change that he can help bring to Congress. He will win this if WE (Independents, Democrats and disenchanted Republicans {a lot of them out there}) share the message for the needed change and reform and what GARTH McGINN wants and can do.
VIVA McGINN !!!
Perhaps McGinn should expend his meager funds in a spot portraying Tiarht as a chicken (literally). . .
A bit outdated, perhaps. But quite a warning for those who believe in runaway population growth. After all, it’s about creating more consumers for the Big Business, Mother Earth be damned and all. Now that US hits 300 M mark, an incentive maybe needed to limit the increase, like NOT having 7 children, for example.http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/4584572.stm
Rage has a great idea..
When you think about it tiahrt and Kline have a lot in common…
Both pander to the religious right, although they both make Kansas look like gooberville, Klines religious beliefs are probably more authentic.
Tiahrt just wants votes. And he knows they will vote for him, since he has been playing them for so long.
But at least Kline has the courage to debate. His positions, his ideas, are not normal, but at least he isn’t a chicken.
