Let the municipal campaigns begin

Given that some in Washington, D.C., already are looking past Nov. 7 to 2008, it’s not surprising that some in Wichita are focused not on the fall elections but on the spring municipal races, particularly for mayor. Two-term City Council member Carl Brewer all but said last week that he’s running for mayor, and he has appointed a campaign treasurer. That should make for interesting council meetings, which already have been tense at times since some members went public with criticism of Mayor Carlos Mayans’ eccentric and often divisive leadership style. With all that the city’s engaged in — WaterWalk, arena parking, troubled attractions, etc. — there should be plenty to debate in the races for mayor and three council seats. Bring them on.

Carl Brewer is a retired Captain and tank commander in the Kansas Nat’l Guard. He will bring respectable leadership back to the Mayor’s office.

Maybe I should run for Mayor. I would act like the money the City spends actually belongs to the people.

It would sure be nice to see some new blood in the City Council. When I voted for Carlos Mayans I thought I was voting for change, moving away from the GOBN. I guess I was wrong. Maybe this time we will get some real new faces; someone who has not been co-opted by the system.

I’d love to see JWink vs Shocker’07.

After Mayans lied about the arena (”either pay millions for an arena or pay millions to fix up the coliseum”), he should be dumped.

Mayans quote: you can go to a strip club or go to church. You can go to heaven or you can go to hell.”

I am tired of politicians using their elective office to preach their particular version of religion, whatever that happens to be.

Supposedly, his family left Cuba to escape a repressive government. Now Carlos strives to banish all adult entertainment, using the power of government to make moral choices, and limiting freedom of choice. Sounds like repressive government to me.

It would be nice to see a candidate for mayor that would speak out against illegal immigration. If 911 taught us anything it is all law enforcement local, state, and federal must cooperate together to solve our security and immigration problems. Failure to do so is costing local communities dearly in the form of increased gang activity, and higher costs for education, health care, and the criminal justice system. Illegal aliens send a large percentage of their discretionary income back to their country of origin taking money out of our local economy. Local politicians should not be allowed to sidestep these facts.

I betcha that the two “front runners” will be Carl Brewer and Paul Gray.

I dont think you will see anyone from the community step forward.

Capn, that was Mayans that said that. That was Ben Sorrentino (sp) in the County and Mayans just reiterated it in a council meeting, describing the county’s position.

This was what I was talking about on another thread. At the present, it is 1:17 pm. ’07’s post has 2:12 pm timestamp. Perhaps it is the individual’s computer clock(s) that haven’t been reset?

That sounds right VT. Like my answer to ‘07 appears before him. I don’t think his clock is reset.

Shocker’07: To paraphrase former President Harry S Truman, I just tell the truth in response to your gross exagerations, spin and dance and your misrepresentations … and you take it as an insult and say I’m being brutal! JWink
