I’m Madonna, but you can call me Mom

There’s something a little unsavory in the news that Madonna has adopted a 1-year-old Malawi boy.
She and her film director husband, Guy Ritchie, took custody of the child Thursday. Yohame Banda, the father, said he met the celebrity couple and likes them: “I know he will be very well looked after in America.”
Materially speaking, that might be the understatement of the decade. The boy is going from one of the poorest countries in the world to one of the richest, from a penniless father to a multimillionaire mom.
Yes, it’s great that Madonna wants to make a difference. But is this about helping a single child, or more about another celebrity dilettante burnishing her own ego?
A child advocacy group in Malawi also has reservations. Eye of the Child said on Friday it would seek a court injunction to stop the adoption if the government did not suspend its interim order approving the process. “It’s not like selling property,” the group’s spokesman said.

Conservatives tend to be anti-adoption for some reason. Rich white women can’t adopt without criticism, Atheists and gays can’t adopt at all.

To those like Dave who are bitching, how many have you adopted?

Why is this unsavory? Madonna can have her own children, so I think it’s wonderful that she’s adopting a less fortunate child. Sure, they’re better off in poverty and starving I guess. Says a lot to the women out there who simply MUST have their own children by invitro instead of adopting. What is the problem for real? She took a kid nobody else wanted. Instead of criticizing someone else for wanting to make the world a better place for someone, try it- you might like it. Kansas has many older thrown away children hoping someone will step up for them.

I don’t think we’ll be hearing any Mommy Dearest stories coming from Madonna- if that is what you’re thinking.

It’s unsavory, because she lined these kids up in front of her and chose one of them, like a little girl choosing a doll at the toy store. It’s unsavory because the child has a father who simply cannot afford to have the child live with him. It’s unsavory because she is simply aping Angelina Jolie. And spare us the “how many kids have you adopted” crap. I’ve adopted two.

LS,Ever try to adopt a kid in the states? It’s a governmental boondoggle. And what frikin difference does the country the kid is from make anyway? It’s about the kid.

Unsavory? I am so glad we have people here who can read minds. Makes thinking for yourself a lost art. I wonder how many american kids Doug and Todd have managed to adopt.

I think what Dave was calling attention to was have foreign orphans become the latest celebrity accessory?I’ll withold judgement until we see if Paris Hilton jumps on the bandwagon. (sarcasm)I think it is a wonderful thing if you have the means. I don’t think Madonna and family should have had all the normal procedures waived for them becausee they are rich and famous. I live a comfortable life. I’ve talked to my wife of adopting before a child from a foreign country. We have a few friends that have. This costs thousands of dollars and numerous trips, background checks, etc.Why is it one of the wealthiest among us got to swoop in a take one trip, pick a child and leave? It’s not her fault the country let her to that, but I think it’s a little out of line. No time to build a relationship and bond a little before the child is an instant part of your family.Again, the heart is in the right place. I think there is just a double standard shown to celebrities and the ultra wealthy which is just BS.

    CALLING JOE WILLIAMS!

Here’s the bet we made exactly one year ago today:

Joe W.–You’re on. Oct 15, 2006. If people can drive from the airport to downtown Baghdad without an armed escort, if the country has a stable elected gov’t, if the US has pulled more than half of its 140,000 troops out, and we’re not losing 1-2 soldiers a day, then I will be happy to pay you 50 US dollars.

If however, any of the above is not true, you owe me.

    *****

Joe—You can send your check to

Horace SantryPEACE AND SOCIAL JUSTICE CENTER of South Central Kansas1407 N. TopekaWichita, KS 67214-1107

I’ll be checking with Horace to see when he gets your check. The sooner you send it in, the sooner I’ll quit hounding you about it.

    Thank you.

Ok, so you don’t approve of Madonna. Exactly how does this give you authority to condemn whatever she does in her private life?

Remember when carrying little dogs in purses was all the rage? Yeah, this is just another celebrity fad / publicity stunt. I wonder what she was thinking?Madonna:”Man, I’m tired of traipsing around half-naked, having babies from screwing around with multitudes of men, and tying myself to crosses in public, I think I’ll go adopt a kid from a third-world country.”

So she’s tired of playing provocateur and now she wants to play house mommy dearest baking blueberry pie. Nothing she does makes sense, and this is a woman who millions upon millions of girls and young women aspired to be since her career in the late 80s. Pathetic.
